“Ace? Mr. Hex?” the Doctor called out as he strolled through the TARDIS. Neither of them had been in their rooms, despite their clear exhaustion after their latest adventure. He poked his head into several rooms along the corridor, calling out for them, but each one was just as empty as the last. Not in the library, not in the gardens, not here, not there. After a few minutes of this, with the TARDIS being of no help, he walked into a lounge and- “Ah.”
His friends were curled up on a couch, Hex wrapped up in Ace's arms. Two cups of tea were cooling on the side table, and neither Ace nor Hex had bothered to change their clothes yet. He leaned against the doorframe for a moment, watching the slow rise and fall of their chests and listening to their soft snores. A small, fond smile curved his lips upwards, crinkling the corners of his eyes as he gazed at them.
Oh, yes. Humans prefer to sleep with blankets. He was sure he had some of those somewhere. “Now, where did I put them…” he muttered to himself, rummaging through various drawers. One of the drawers he opened had nothing in it except a nest of some kind. He didn't see what was in it, but he heard something rustle & hiss. He resolved to leave that one alone.
After going through several drawers, he finally found the one where he - or perhaps one of his companions, or the TARDIS herself - had stashed the blankets. He pulled out a soft, deep green blanket from the top of the pile and draped it over the sleeping pair. He ran a gentle hand through Hex’s hair, ruffling it, then leaned down to press a small kiss to Ace’s forehead. “Good night,” he murmured. Then, with a wry smile, he added, “Sleep tight, and don't let the bedbugs bite.”
