ALTER EGO (a self-discovery story)

Chapter Text

“Where id was, there ego shall be.”

 A dark, empty space.

That's all it seemed to look like for Alex.

A dark, endless, empty space.

It extended as far as the eye could see. There was no end.

Only the blank walls on either side seemed to give a sort of road for them to walk on.

And so, they did.

They kept walking through what seemed to be an endless hallway. A hallway that made it seem like they weren't welcome here.

They've been wandering the hallway for almost an hour now. Still, they have yet to find anything to note.

They glanced back from where they came, but all they could see was an endless hallway. Leading to nowhere.

There was nothing beyond anything.

Alex sighed, seemingly knowing that they would spend the entirety of their life just mindlessly wandering around these hallways.

But they're thoughts soon betrayed them when a very distinct sound came from behind them.

They glanced back, their guard up.

The walls from the left side of the hallway started moving, and it stopped midway. It projected the face of a man of philosophy, one that is dignified and proper.

But it didn't stop there.

The walls from the left side started moving as soon as the right side stopped, and now both walls created an impassable wall for the hallway. This time, it depicted that of a woman of philosophy, one that is pure and timeless.

Alex thought that they were now trapped, needing to backtrack where they came from, but a voice suddenly spoke to them as if it was inside their head.

“I have been waiting for you, my lost child.”

The voice was neither man nor woman. It couldn't be explained in words even if Alex had tried. Perhaps it was from the mindless walk that they had been doing, but nevertheless, they couldn't keep a straight face when that wall—or at least what appeared to be—spoke to them.

“Waiting?” they asked hoarsely. The silence that has been plaguing them for over an hour has made speaking quite troublesome.

The wall didn’t answer their question. Instead, the wall kept talking to Alex like some sort of programmed machine designed to follow only its coding.

“I am Ego Rex,” it responded. “I administer the rules.”

“Rules? For what?”

Once again, their question was left unanswered by the unknown voice.

“What you will find here with me…

…is you, yourself.”
