Chapter Text
she was running.
she was running, and she would bump into you, and you needed to move as quickly as possible before the drinks in your hand—
nevermind.
like you had accurately predicted, the girl came crashing into your form and you stumbled backwards in shock, the two coffees you were holding in your hands spilling on your white shirt before they fell to the ground— a shirt you loved and only wore for special occasions.
it had happened in slow motion, but you were stupid for not moving. sometimes that happened; knowing something bad is coming but not being able to do anything to avoid it, no matter how much you wanted to.
that was why you stood with a blank expression on your face, dumbly staring down at the spilt drinks and the stain on your top. your hands remained floating midair, and all you managed to mumble was, "shit."
the girl hadn't even bothered stopping.
she was too focused on where she needed to be, apparently, or focused on getting away from someone... you didn't know, you hadn't bothered paying attention to her reason behind sprinting towards you at full speed. all you cared about was yours and your boyfriend's coffees, which were now helplessly laying on the cement.
to her credit, though, the girl did add —a few moments later— from practically two metres away, "sorry!!"
"...sorry won't get my drinks back," you grumbled under your breath, but nonetheless picked up the two now empty cups and walked over to a nearby trash can. with a sigh, you let them fall into the garbage and then allowed your shoulders to slump when you fully comprehended how shitty this all actually was.
this small encounter was enough to ruin your whole day — not that you were having a particularly good day to start with.
"...bathroom." you thought, glancing around the empty street you were in now. you were already far away from the coffee shop, and stood awfully close to where you needed to be; your boyfriend's dorms. there was no use in turning back around, you'd just have to suck it up and meet him so you could get changed at his place.
this fucking sucks.
just like that, an excruciating ten minutes later, you found yourself outside the dorm building of one of the most prestigious hero schools japan had to offer.
UA.
you didn't even have to open the front door — he ran out to greet you before your hand touched the handle.
"y/n!!" he cheered, embracing you in his arms as he always did when he'd see you. it took you a few seconds to realise that you had just been ambushed in a hug out of nowhere, but once you did, you smiled and hugged him back, "hi, neito."
"wait." he pulled away, glancing down at the front of your shirt with furrowed brows. "the hell happened to you?"
"ugh." your face turned sour in remembrance of the event that led your white top to be half-dyed brown. "this girl bumped into me and spilt my coffee. sorry i look like thi—"
"wow, what an ass move." he rolled his eyes and enclosed his fingers around your wrist before turning around, and heading back inside the building, dragging you along behind him. "come in and get changed, i'll give you something to wear."
"i'd appreciate that, thanks." you smiled fondly at him, but before you could add anything else, you were tackled in another hug the moment you stepped foot inside the building.
monoma was forced to release your wrist as you took a few steps back in surprise, gaping at the person who had hugged you out of nowhere.
"y/n!" tetsutetsu seemed beyond ecstatic to see you and his strong arms refused to let you go. the cheery tone to his voice and his excited smile made you chuckle, "hi, tetsu. how've you been?"
"horrible. we just had tests." his tone changed to annoyed and he finally pulled away, only to have himself yanked away from you by his shoulder by an irritated monoma, "i told you to stop fucking hugging her like that!"
"we're friends!!" tetsutetsu exclaimed, the smallest of frowns decorating his features.
monoma scowled at him. "stay six feet away from her, friend.”
as the two began to argue, you heard the sound of your name being called out once more.
glancing to the right, your gaze landed on a familiar-looking girl with a high ponytail and a happy smile on her face. "y/n! i've missed you!"
"kendou!" you were the one to wrap your arms around her this time, having not seen her for at least a few weeks, if not a month. you had missed her, too. "how are you? where's ibara?"
"actually, that's why i invited you over." monoma had tetsutetsu in a headlock now, but he still casually spoke to you with a relaxed look on his face. "you know i never invite you here because they can be annoying—"
"hey!" tetsutetsu and kendou interjected, their tones laced with offence.
"—but we're basically having like a small party-ish thing. those stupid class 3-A kids are coming too." monoma summarised, the smallest of smiles appearing on his face, "ibara's just gone to invite them over. so... what do you say?"
you hadn't been informed of a party — you just assumed he invited you over for fun. though one thing was for sure, monoma never let you come to the dorms, especially because of how much his classmates always interrogated you whenever you came over. they were still fascinated by the fact that monoma had a girlfriend, even though it had been well over two months since the two of you started dating.
although, you had thought to yourself, i get why it'd be surprising to think that he's dating someone.
"sure." you grinned, "should be fun."
-
it was not fun. not in the slightest.
being introduced to as monoma's girlfriend always gave you one of two reactions; a look of absolute shock, or one of sympathy, as if to ask you 'why would you date him?'
so you had made a game out of predicting who would react in what way next. it was a boring game, but one you enjoyed playing. there was nothing better for you to do at the party crowded with hero students who talked about things you couldn't quite understand. as a person born without a quirk, all you could do was smile politely and nod whenever anything hero-related was mentioned.
monoma didn't seem to notice your discomfort; he was too busy yelling at the students from the other class about how he was better than all of them, and that they were scum.
sometimes, you truly did ask yourself why you were dating him.
but then you remembered the reason, and you couldn't help but smile genuinely at the memories. monoma neito was an asshole, but he was an asshole you liked. that would not change.
upon the students of class 1-A finding out that monoma had a girlfriend, you had been swarmed with the girls, who were all in awe of you.
"i still can't believe it." a girl you had just recognised to be ashido mina mumbled under her breath, eyeing you with a flabbergasted expression on her face, "...are you... actually?!"
"did he force you?" the girl with purple hair, jirou kyouka, questioned with narrowed eyes and a look of suspicion.
"or blackmail you?" asui tsuyu added, also eyeing you with sympathy.
"or threaten you?" uraraka ochaco was next to ask, with furrowed eyebrows and a curious look that appeared as if she truly believed there was no possible way that you were monoma neito's girlfriend.
"uh... yeah. it's crazy, i know." you chuckled, grateful for the fact that monoma was too far away to hear what all of you were discussing. "and he's not that bad."
"no, he's bad." mina started, only to quickly panic and add, "no offence."
"it's fine, i usually get this reaction from people." a snort escaped your mouth and you shook your head, "but it's like... he's nice. maybe not the nicest, but still nice, y'know?"
all of their eyes simultaneously softened at your words. they finally seemed to comprehend the fact that you really liked him, and weren't just dating him out of necessity.
"sure, whatever you say." uraraka smiled, glancing at your blond boyfriend who was still condescendingly speaking to his so-called friends. the brown-haired girl chuckled, "i guess he must make you happy."
"yeah. he does." happiness bloomed in your chest at that, and you couldn't help but feel your heartbeat accelerate at the thought of him.
he's not the nicest. but he's nice.
-
allowing a small sigh to escape your mouth, you exited the bathroom and tossed your hair over your shoulder casually. the party was in full swing, and you could hear the voices of all the hero students having the time of their lives. it brought a small grin to your face — if you hadn't dated monoma, you never would have realised that hero students had times like these too; times when they were normal teenagers.
rounding a corner, you found the hallway that led to the common area and prepared to make your way through, only to freeze upon noticing someone standing there in the secluded darkness.
monoma.
face lighting up, you began to approach him with your lips parting as you started to say his name.
"nah, it's just funny at this point."
freezing in place, your expression fell.
you didn't know what compelled you to do this, but you dashed back to where you had come from, no longer in the hallway and instead standing away from his sight, in a place where you could still hear him, regardless of the fact that he wasn't within your vision.
leaning against the wall, you eavesdropped on the conversation your boyfriend was having with whoever he was speaking to on the phone.
"come on, you know why i brought her — you should see the damn looks on these scums' faces when they find out i'm dating someone. it's fucking hilarious, they can never believe it."
a pit was forming in your stomach, and you didn't know why.
a scoff escaped monoma's mouth. "what, you think i'm actually into her or something? get serious, dude, i'm in the fucking hero course. who the hell has time for a relationship? i'm just tryna prove to these dimwits that i have a girl, it's that simple."
tears welled in your eyes. no, this has to be some sort of joke.
"plus she doesn't have anything going for her except for her looks. i mean, she's fucking quirkless, bro."
that did it for you.
a sharp pain stabbed through your chest and you bit the inside of your cheek. oh.
turning around, you headed back to the bathroom where you had come from and entered, shutting the door behind you. there was no way you could listen to any more of that conversation without throwing up all over the hallway. UA wouldn't particularly like that, you assumed.
lazily trudging over to the bathtub in the corner of the bathroom, you pursed your lips and stepped into it, sitting down and pulling your knees up to your chest.
and then the tears started to flow.
