The Time Variance Academy Special Event!

Summary:

What if Avengers Academy lasted long enough to have a special event for the Loki series? Well, maybe it would look something like this.

Work Text:

“No, I actually hate this,” Loki says.

“I don’t,” Natasha says, her eyes gleaming in a way that would send a lot of her classmates running. “I’m really sorry that you and your insecurities have another version of you to compete with—” Loki makes an outraged noise comparable to a cat who’s just fallen in a bathtub— “but A, he obviously already has a girlfriend, and B, they walked out of the time fog. It’s been ages since we’ve had any new information on it. I don’t care what Fury says, I’m finding out everything they know.”

“Why do you always have to say things like that about my ‘insecurities,’” Loki hisses, as if the newcomers might overhear when they’re on the other side of the quad. “It’s really annoying!”

She pats his shoulder. “I’m allergic to bullshit and that’s why you like me. Catch you later.” She sets off across the quad almost at a run, leaving Brian with a sputtering Loki.

“I’m not insecure,” he finally grumbles.

“Mate,” Brian sighs.

“Anyway it would be silly to think another Loki who dresses like that could replace me. He’s not even wearing any green.”

“He’s not going to replace you,” Brian says patiently. “He’s a different person with different experiences and you don’t look 100% identical anyway. Plus, think of it this way, now you’ll probably have help messing with Thor.”

“Not that I need help messing with Thor,” Loki says, but he looks like he’s at least considering it.

“Come on,” Brian says, “let’s make sure Nat isn’t scaring them off, yeah?”

Actually, from the way they’re sizing each other up, Natasha and both new girls will probably get along like a house on fire, with equally life-threatening consequences to anyone who might get in their way. The gray-haired man with them, who must be a professor, just looks resigned.

“Of course they’re hiding things from us,” the blonde girl is saying as Brian and Loki walk up. “They’re always hiding something. Did you know there’s a creature made of timefog?”

“We don’t know that’s true,” the professor says, sounding very tired.

“Yes we do! You just don’t want to believe they lied to you too!”

“Hey,” Natasha says to Brian and Loki. The gleam in her eyes is downright unsettling at this point. “Sylvie here is an enchantress too, only without the creepy love-spell stuff.”

“She’s completely self-taught,” the other Loki adds proudly. “Amazing, right?”

“Shush, you,” Sylvie says, but she smiles back at him, so apparently they’re that type of obnoxiously cute couple.

Loki of Avengers Academy looks mildly constipated about it. Brian can’t see the future and doesn’t want to, but he has a real solid prediction that his Loki will try giving the other Loki shit exactly once for how smitten he is, at which point Sylvie will hand him his ass, and…honestly, Brian’s pretty sure he couldn’t prevent that if he tried, but it also sounds like a valuable learning experience, so he doesn’t plan to try very hard.

“There’s a bonus,” he says, nudging Loki, “Amora will hate that.”

“Yes, all right,” Loki says. “Welcome to Avengers Academy, I suppose.”

“Thanks,” the professor says. “I’m Mobius, and this is B-15. We were just telling your friend—we’re from the Time Variance Academy and it sounds like we’ve got a lot to talk about.”

Not a day goes by that I don’t miss this charming little game, despite all its microtransactions and grindiness, but I missed it the most when the Loki show first came out and I started wondering what an Avengers Academy event for it might look like. Honestly, I didn’t get very far, and I don’t entirely remember why I came back to this idea recently to write a ficlet. The multiverse obviously exists in Avengers Academy, and Kang already showed up in a Young Avengers event, so the plot couldn’t directly involve freeing the multiverse or defeating Kang. It would probably have something to do with unmasking the Time Variance Academy’s shadowy headmaster as a Kang variant, and ideally it would reveal more about the mysteries of the timefog (whatever exactly those are, given that the devs never did tell us much).

TVA Loki would be a separate character from the Loki that already exists in the game. President Loki would be a new outfit, but it would probably make more sense to give that to OG Loki than to TVA Loki, given the difference in personalities. Sylvie, B-15, and Casey would be additional TVA students; Ravonna Renslayer and Mobius would be recruitable as TVA professors. The building would be the TVA dorm, which would look vaguely like that inner bit with the statues of the Timekeepers, and it would have a pool on the roof so Mobius could have a jetski-related action. (In a perfect world I would just reuse the beach for this, but I don’t think that’s how it works.)

Gator Loki would of course be available an item/pet…but also the President Loki outfit should have an action that involves being chased around the quad by Gator Loki. (Alioth would also be…something. In Marvel STRIKE Force, Sylvie’s ultimate ability is to enchant Alioth and send it after her enemies in battle—and there’s concept art in the season 2 art book showing a mini version of Alioth as Sylvie’s pet, so I kind of love the idea of doing something along those lines for this.) TVA Loki and Sylvie would have at least one paired action doing something cute, maybe with Loki making fireworks for Sylvie. I’m sure the actual event mechanics, at least for unlocking characters, buildings, and decorations, would involve a lot of grinding for items like tickets, Tempads, and timesticks (alliteration not my fault).

That's all I've got.
