Work Text:
Loki sits on his sofa bundled up with a blanket and a book when he hears his phone beep with an incoming text. Wondering who would be contacting him at 9 o’clock on a Saturday evening, he picks it up from the coffee table. The screen lights up and his heart skips a beat when he sees the sender’s name. Sylvie, his dearest friend who he happens to be madly in love with, was supposed to be on a date right now. Thinking the worst happened, he immediately opens her message.
Sylvie: Are you home right now?
Loki quickly responds back.
Loki: Yes, just settled with a book. Is everything okay? Are you okay?
The text bubbles that mean Sylvie is texting back pop up right away. Oh no, does she need saving?
Sylvie: Great, I’m coming up. Be there in a tick!
He re-reads her message a few times before it sinks in and replies back.
Loki: Come on up!
He places his phone and book on the table before springing up from the sofa. He folds the blanket he was using and hangs it over the back of the sofa cushion. Bound with nervous energy, he starts tidying up his already spotless apartment in preparation of her arrival.
Sylvie is on her way, the girl he has been secretly in love with for the last 2 years is coming to his apartment. She’s been there plenty of times before as she only lives a few floors down from him, but this is different. She had a first date scheduled at 8 with a guy, who Loki thinks is a stuck up prick, and it’s done within an hour? What if he stood her up? What if he hurt her? He’s never been one to lay a hand on someone, but if Sylvie was hurt in any way, he’d knock the bloke’s teeth out.
His thoughts are interrupted when there’s a knock on his door. Loki stops at the mirror next to his door and checks his reflection before opening it. Sylvie stands in the hallway looking comfortable in joggers and a jumper, holding a bottle of wine in her hand. Loki always thinks she looks beautiful, but she seems more herself when dressed in comfy clothing and that makes him more attracted to her.
“Hi, I brought some wine as a peace offering for bugging you so late.” Sylvie says while holding the bottle up to him, a sheepish smile on her face.
Loki chuckles and takes the bottle from her hand. “You could never bug me, Sylvie. You’re always welcome here,” he moves out of the way to let her pass. “Please, come in.”
Sylvie walks past him and takes her shoes off as Loki shuts the door behind her.
“Would you like a glass?”
Sylvie sits down on his sofa, making herself comfortable with the blanket Loki had just folded back up. “Please.”
Loki grins at her actions while heading into the kitchen to grab two wine glasses. Whenever she comes over she makes a beeline for his sofa, claiming it’s more comfortable than hers. He’s inclined to agree, but her sofa has been suitable for the few impromptu movie nights they’ve had.
Searching for his wine opener, he gently unscrews the cork and discards it into the trash can. Grabbing the glasses and the wine bottle, he walks back to the living room to find Sylvie inspecting the book he was reading prior to her arrival. His heart sings at how domestic they look right now; her sitting comfortably on the sofa with a book, him coming to join her with wine to share. Gods, does he wish it could be like this every night.
Sylvie looks up as he approaches and sets the book back down on the table.
“For you, madam.” he says as he holds out a glass to her.
“Thank you, kind sir.”
She flashes him a big smile as she grabs the glass from him, their fingers touching as he passes it to her. The luminescence of her smile and their brief touch sends a jolt of arousal to the depths of his belly. Anything Sylvie does makes him want to fall to his knees and offer her his undying love and affection.
His life has gotten exponentially better since their mutual friend Mobius invited her to his annual end of summer extravaganza two years ago. They hit it off instantly, both having the same taste in books and music, both being adopted, and she just moved into his apartment complex. With so much in common, they gravitated towards each other and she became a part of his friend group. Loki felt an instant attraction, but made no move to pursue Sylvie as she never made any suggestion that she was into him. He’d rather have her in his life as a friend than ruin what they have with a confession that may not be reciprocated.
Loki sits down next to her and accepts the part of the blanket Sylvie offers him, letting it drape across his lap. He pours some wine into her glass and then fills his own and sets the bottle on the table.
“Cheers to good wine and good company.” Loki says while raising his glass in the air. Sylvie raises hers and they let their glasses clink together before taking the first sip. The wine is a perfect mixture of sweet and dry that flows smoothly down his throat.
Curious as to how Sylvie’s date went, he shifts his body so he’s facing her. “So, how did the date with that bloke go? Bradley was his name, right?”
Sylvie takes a deep breath through her nose. “It didn’t, I canceled on him an hour before.” She brings her glass to her lips and quickly drinks the whole glass.
He looks at her in shock as she grabs the bottle and pours more wine into her glass. “You canceled on him an hour before the date? Why would you do that?”
Sylvie shrugs and takes a sip of her freshly refilled wine. “I changed my mind, told him I didn’t think we would be a match.”
Loki stares at her in confusion. Sure she hadn’t been overly excited about this date, but she had spent this week casually texting the fellow after meeting him at the pub this past weekend. He didn’t think she would be one to cancel a date with an hour's notice, and while he thought this Bradley sounded like a prick, he couldn’t help but feel sorry for the poor man.
As for Loki, he’s elated because she is here sitting on his sofa instead of getting to know someone who could potentially become her boyfriend. Of course he wants his best friend to be happy – oh, would he love to be the reason why – just not with someone who tried to impress her by outdrinking all her friends. He now feels like she said yes to the date out of pity, not because it impressed her.
“Well, I could have told you he was no good for you, but you’ve been texting him all week, so I thought you’d at least give him this one date.”
Sylvie finishes her second refill and gives him a curious look while pouring more wine. “You think I shouldn’t have canceled on him, then? I’d thought you’d be happy about this.”
“No, I’m not saying that, I just feel a little sorry for the man. You really told him an hour before your date that you didn’t think it would work.” Loki brings his glass to his lips and drinks until it’s empty. “Believe me, I’m relieved you aren’t currently out with him.” He takes the bottle from her hands and pours himself another glass.
Sylvie gives him a small smile and averts her gaze to a spot on the couch. They sit in silence for a minute until he hears her take a deep breath.
“That’s not the only reason I canceled on him.”
Loki gives her a curious look. “Oh really?”
Sylvie nods and starts to fidget with the blanket. “Yeah. I didn’t tell him the other reason, but I think he could already tell.” She closes her eyes and her shoulders tense as if she’s gearing up to drop a bombshell that could change things. “I’m in love with someone.”
Oh no. Loki can feel his heart start to break into tiny pieces at her words. She’s in love with someone. Has she been seeing someone and didn’t tell him? Of course she didn’t need to tell him everything that goes on in her life, but he thought they were close enough that they’d tell each other when they were dating someone.
“Oh.” That’s all he can seem to say, all that his brain is capable of thinking.
“Mmm, that’s the biggest reason, really. I didn’t think it would be fair to Brad to lead him on.” For the third time that night, she drinks her wine in one sip. Loki noticed how quickly she’s been drinking her wine, and he is starting to believe it’s because she was preparing to drop this huge news on him. “Are you going to ask who it is?”
He’s not sure he wants to know at this point, doesn’t think his heart could handle finding out who captured the attention of the girl he loves. Though it would serve him right for not telling her of his feelings sooner. Sylvie is a gorgeous woman, anyone would want to worship the ground she walks on just as he would if he let her.
“Is it Mobius? He was the first person you met when you moved here and brought you into our friend group.”
“Mobius?! You think it’s Mobius?” Sylvie lets out a laugh that turns into a snort. “Yeah, he was my first new friend but that’s all I see him as. And we all know he has a thing for that Ravonna lady he works with.” She starts laughing again, tears threatening to spill from her eyes.
Loki laughs along with her, unable to resist her adorable and infectious laughter. “I don’t know, Mobius was the first person I thought of!”
He knew for certain it wasn’t Mobius– he suspects Mobius knew Loki had been down bad for Sylvie the moment they met – but his was the first name that came to mind. And his friend definitely has a soft spot for his no nonsense co-worker.
They laugh together for a few minutes, wiping tears from their eyes as they start to calm down.
Once the giggles come to a stop, Sylvie’s body language becomes serious again. In their years of friendship, Loki has become an expert at gauging her moods and thoughts just by watching her body language. Whatever she’s going to say next is making her nervous and he wishes she would just break his heart already.
“No, I’m not in love with Mobius. I, uh -” she looks down at her fingers, still fidgeting with the blanket. “You are familiar with who it is, though.”
“Is it Casey? O.B? Verity?”
“No, not the nerds or Verity. They’re good friends, but not my type”
Now Loki is confused. It’s someone he is familiar with, but it’s not any of their friends. He’s not familiar with anyone she works with nor is he aware of other friend groups she’s a part of. That only leaves him, but surely she doesn’t feel anything remotely romantic for him, right? She’s never made any sort of indication that she’s attracted to him, at least he didn’t think so.
He is interrupted from his thoughts when he hears Sylvie say something like ‘for crying outloud’ and feels her fingers in his hair, pulling him towards her and capturing his lips with hers. Loki is taken by surprise, the object of his affections, his best friend, is kissing him. It’s chaste and he can feel Sylvie testing how far she can go or if it’s something he wants, and oh does he desperately want this. Before she has the chance to pull away, his hands grip her waist to pull her even closer and he moves his lips with hers, kissing her with the hunger of a starved man.
Sylvie lets out a cute sound and reciprocates the kiss with her own hunger all while straddling his lap. Their noses smoosh together as Sylvie tightens her grip on Loki’s soft locks. Her lips taste like the sweetness of the wine they’ve been drinking and her soft tongue traces his lips trying to gain access to his. His lips part to let her in, their tongues meeting in a lover’s dance. Loki feels as though he died and went to heaven.
When breathing becomes an issue, they reluctantly part but leave their foreheads touching. They’re both breathing heavily and gazing into each other’s eyes. Loki lets his hand trail up to her cheek, his thumb rubbing the spot behind her ear. Sylvie’s hands gently massage his scalp and she smiles at the soft moan he lets out at her actions.
“Now do you know who it is?”
“Hmm, no, I don’t think I do.” He gives her a grins as she removes one of her hands from his hair and playfully smacks his shoulder. Obviously he knows.
“I’m in love with you, you clown!” Sylvie lets out a laugh and smacks him again. “Maybe I should have fallen in love with Mobius, he would have figured it out right away. You’re lucky you’re a handsome idiot.”
“Oh no, I’m glad you’re not in love with him!” He tucks a stray piece of her hair behind her ear and plants a quick kiss on her lips. He can’t believe he’s finally able to feel her lips on his. “Would you believe me when I say that I’m in love with you, too? Have been since the day we met.”
“I had a feeling you were holding that back, yeah. I can’t say I fell in love right at the start, but I knew you would be more than a friend somewhere down the line.” Sylvie lets her hands drop down to his chest, feeling his toned muscles. “It’s been about a year since I realized I was in love with you. I didn’t want to ruin our friendship in case I was wrong about how you felt about me, so I didn’t bring it up. I suspect you didn’t tell me for the same reasons, yeah?”
“You would be correct in your suspicion. Our friendship was much too important to ruin if feelings weren’t reciprocated.” Loki moves his hands so that they cover hers on his chest. “I’m glad you called off your date and came over. I must say, this was not how I expected my night to go.”
“I should have told Brad earlier than an hour before, but it was a last minute decision to march over here and attempt to tell you. I was hanging out in my apartment trying to get the courage to text you and ask if you were home. Took me the whole hour to psych myself up, with the help of Verity. By the way, she knows about our feelings for each other.”
“Let me guess, she figured it out on her own?” Sylvie nods and Loki can’t help but chuckle. “Leave it to Verity to put two and two together. I presume Mobius knows as well, those two are too smart for their own good.”
“That they are, and they chose to be friends with us.” Sylvie moves her hands from under Loki’s and wraps her arms around his shoulders while wagging her eyebrows at him suggestively. “So, now that we’ve confessed our love for each other, want to snog some more?”
Loki’s hands sprawl out on her lower back and pushes her closer to him so they are chest to chest. “I very much would like to snog some more, my love.”
Their lips meet in a fiery passion that warms Loki down to his very core. He finally has the girl he loves in his arms, kissing him like it’s the end of the world. Of course, it’s not, and thank God for that. He plans on kissing her for the rest of the night and, if the stars align, for the rest of his life.
