Work Text:
Yu woke up to the quiet sound of music drifting up the stairs toward his bedroom and a noticeable empty spot under the covers next to him. As he slowly opened his eyes, he saw that the sun had already risen for the day.
Yu reached out to the other side of his mattress, feeling that the spot where Yosuke had been the night before was cold. He must have let Yu sleep in and gone downstairs in order to not disturb him. But that doesn’t answer the question of the soft, classical song playing from under his room.
Yu groaned as he dragged the tired weight of his body up from his comfortable position lying down. He crept toward the door quietly, trying his best to not alert Yosuke to the fact that he was awake. He always had a fun time surprising his boyfriend, and today was no different.
Slowly, he cracked open his bedroom door, shutting it silently behind him and tiptoeing down the old house’s stairs. As he neared the bottom floor, though, movement out of the corner of his eye caused him to stop in his tracks and look up.
His eyes landed on Yosuke first, who had his head angled down, sporting a massive grin. He swayed side to side with the quiet music as he looked down at a giddy Nanako.
Nanako was situated so that her feet were balanced on top of Yosuke’s, and her small hands were cradled gently in Yosuke’s own. They danced and laughed as the music played in the background, blissfully unaware of the spectator to their domestic moment.
Yu’s eyes widened as he took in the sight of how natural and how right it felt to see this. He nearly had to stop himself from getting down on one knee and spouting some on-the-spot poetic bullshit as he watched Yosuke treat his sister like his own family.
Yu’s life hadn’t been easy up to this point, especially last year, when they almost Nanako for good. He knew he would do it all over again, save her as many times as he needed to, just to see her happy like this. The overwhelming love Yu felt as he watched the scene in front of him threatened to overflow and spill out of him as his eyes started to water.
He finally stepped forward, allowing himself to enter Yosuke and Nanako’s private moment. Yu walked up behind Yosuke, who had his back turned to him and wrapped his arms around his waist.
Yosuke yelped in surprise, luckily keeping a good grip on Nanako so he didn’t let her fall as he jumped slightly. Yu pushed himself further into his space, pressing a kiss to his cheek and whispering in his ear.
“I love you so much.”
Nanako wrinkled her nose, letting out a small ew under her breath, and Yosuke’s cheeks immediately colored pink. Yu laughed at their reactions as he started to sway the three of them along to the new song that had just begun playing. He rested his chin on Yosuke’s shoulder, grinning at Nanako, who seemed to have gotten over her initial childlike disgust and smiled back at him.
The position the three of them were in was by no means comfortable, with Nanako following Yosuke’s lead and Yosuke following Yu’s, but they made it work. They softly drifted through the living room to the music, all of them silent in order to not break this peaceful environment they had enveloped themselves in.
Eventually, Yu broke himself out of the swaying, removing his hands from Yosuke’s waist and quirking his lips up as Yosuke leaned back to chase his withdrawing embrace.
“I’m gonna go make us breakfast,” Yu said as he slipped away, leaving to the kitchen with one final kiss to Yosuke’s cheek and a matching one on the top of Nanako’s head.
As he walked into the kitchen, he looked back to see Nanako grab the TV remote before foregoing her usual spot on the cushion and crawling into Yosuke’s lap where he sat on the couch.
Yu turned around, a private smile on his face as he realized this is what love feels like.
