Work Text:

It was a clear day out on the Great Sea, and as a rito mailman, Kalli was very busy. Using his wings to traverse the open sea between the many islands inhabited by the people of this world. Delivering mail was no easy task, especially with how vast the Great Sea was. Kalli lived on Dragon Roost island, an island full of a birdlike race of people called the rito. The rito had large wings, when not in use were wrapped carefully around their arms like sleeves. Rito were the mailpeople of the Great Sea, being able to easily navigate over the tall waves without risk.
As Kalli followed his usual trade route, he landed on the large tree that was the Forest Haven. Inside the large tree rested the Great Deku Tree, and his beloved Koroks. Koroks were small, wooden creatures with leaf masks for faces, with long wood noses sticking out of the mask. The Koroks had been given the important task of planting trees on islands all over the Great Sea in hopes of rejuvenating the land with seeds given to them by the Deku Tree.
Kalli stopped in front of the island's mailbox, shuffling through his mailbag and setting the two letters addressed to the island in the box. With that, he set off again, heading to his next destination. However, as he was flying, he spotted a small island off the coast of the Forest Haven. On it he could see a small Korok, stomping around angrily around a small, dying tree sprout. Worried that something may be wrong, Kalli decided to make a pit stop and land on the small island.
When he landed, the korok looked over him, a bit confused, and somewhat angry. Without letting Kalli say anything, the korok bursted into a short, yet annoyance filled spiel, “Hey- what are you doing here?! This is my island, ya hear! I claimed it for this tree, and I won’t have anybody taking it!” Kalli quickly raised his hands in surrender, responding to the korok, “Woah, woah, I don’t want your island, okay? I just spotted you while on my mail route and thought you looked like you could use some help, that’s all.”
The rito’s explanation slightly calmed down the korok, getting him to stay quiet for a bit as he thought. “Well, if you're here, I might as well see if you can solve my little problem here.” The korok explained, “You see, this tree sprout that the Great Deku Tree gave me to plant keeps wilting, and I don’t know why.” he said with an exasperated sigh. Kallie shrugged, digging through his bag for anything that might help. As he rummaged through it, the korok introduced himself as Maglia, a korok musician who had played music with his brother before being given a sprout by the Deku Tree.
Kalli managed to find a small glass jar in his mailbag, pulling it out and using it to scoop up some ocean water. He carefully poured the water onto the sprout, to no avail. The tree stayed wilted and withered. With no idea what to do next, Maglia suggested that maybe the sun was too bright on the tree, and hopped up onto Kalli’s shoulders to shroud the tree in shade.
After that led to no results, the pair sat on the edge of the small island, stumped on what to do next. They brainstormed for a bit, before Maglia remembered something, “Hey! The water from inside the Forest Haven has special properties, maybe that’ll work on the sprout!” The korok jumped up to his feet and ran around Kalli in circles. “You can get there faster than anyone else, and you got that fancy jar of yours, you can get the water! Right?” Maglia asked. “I suppose I could make the trip, yes.” Kalli sighed, giving in to the small korok. He quickly rose to his feet, and flew off into the sky, heading towards Forest Haven.
A little while later, Kalli returned, a bottle full of forest water in hand. He handed the bottle to Maglia, letting him pour the water onto the withering sprout. They watched it carefully after the water was poured, and it sprung to life! The pair celebrated, proud of their achievement. They soon said their goodbyes,--Kalli had to return to work, and Maglia had to return to Forest Haven,-- knowing they would be glad to see each other again some day.
