You know, Spencer didn't necessarily think he was a bad guy. Ya he knew he lacked empathy, and had violent tendencies but there was a place for people like him in the world. Being in the military had taught him that, and the way he'd been snapped up by the dark god, and then Roger. There was a need for people like him. It gave him purpose!
The problem was that his reputation preceded him, and he was famously fucked up in an already very fucked up little town. He could hardly blame Jack for having assumed he was the one who set the bomb, but it still rubbed him the wrong way! Especially since Jack was nearly as fucked up as him and only slightly more empathetic. That was probably why, in spite of everything, Spencer was a little obsessed with Jack.
Had been ever since the little bitch slit his throat. Who fucking knew, certainly not him! It was a damn good thing the universe didn't seem to let him die, nor Jack for that matter. It started to be, more quickly then Spencer would admit, that the only person that mattered in the fucking world was Jack.
Spencer broke his leg, Jack slit his throat, Spencer cut off Jack's finger, Jack shot him in the stomach. On nights where Spencer couldn't sleep he traced the marks that little shit had left on him, the scars that made his blood run hot with hate and passion and thought about how they might try and kill each other next. It was a stupid fantasy, it was a stupid decision, he was a wanted man and on some level he knew Jack would be his undoing, but he just couldn't stay away.
The fucked up thing was that no one else seemed to be able to either! Jack was a magnet for trouble, but it was more then that. Spencer knew that everything in this shitty little town revolved around what was going on at that gas station, but it wasn't the station alone, it was Jack too. He was so steeped in that nasty power that he became catnip to every monster with a nose.
Spencer couldn't stand it.
HE was the only one who could fuck with Jack! NO ONE ELSE! At least not unless they paid him a fuck ton of money! That was also why he couldn't stay away from the gas station too. Anytime anything came sniffing around Jack Spencer couldn't fucking Stand it! He couldn't always stop it, but he did when he could, and let Jack believe it was a threat whenever Spencer left the bloody organs of those monsters on Jack's back doorstep, after all Spencer never let Jack's enemies close enough to let him know he even had enemies. And that was just the way Spencer liked it, he should be the only thing Jack was afraid of.
It itched at the back of Spencer's mind that Jack wasn't more afraid of him, that he wasn't on Jack's mind as much as Jack was on his. That was probably why he took to leaving little love notes with the organs, even if he knew how stupid it was.
They were simple things really, usually related back to the organ he'd left; 'You've been on my mind' or 'I'm saving your heart for last.' He made a couple copies, so that later when he broke into Jack's house and found, furiously, that Jack had been throwing them away, he could leave the copies on the table. He wanted Jack to have them after all, and he wanted Jack to remember he was never safe.
He was long gone before the cops came of course, but he didn't stay away for long, never did, never could.
"You know what I don't understand Jack?" He asked, having slipped into the Gas station while Jack was zoning out and unplugging the phone.
Jack blinked and focused on Spencer and his eyes narrowed. "A lot of things probably, You never were the brightest bulb."
"I don't understand, why it's always you," Spencer spat, ignoring the insult. Normally the lack of empathy stopped those things from meaning fuck all to him, but from Jack they made his heart thump in a way he was never sure if he liked or not.
"What... do you mean?" Jack asked, tilting his head slightly.
"Now who's not the brightest?" Spencer snorted, hopping up to sit on the counter. Jack went to get up and before he could Spencer pressed one foot firmly into Jack's good leg, keeping him down. "Why is it always you?" He repeated glaring down at the other side of his coin resentfully.
"You can't just repeat what you already said and expect me to understand the second time!" Jack snapped, and tried to shove Spencer's leg off of him, not that it worked.
Spencer knew that unfortunately. The problem was that he couldn't ask the true question without sounding far more pathetic then he was comfortable with, because he knew exactly why Jack was at the center of all the paranormal bullshit around here. What he truly wanted an answer to, was why Jack was always on his mind why Spencer's life seemed to revolve around him too! He had left this shitty little town after years revolving around each other but never really meeting, and had immediately and unwillingly, unintentionally, been brought back into this pale nerd's gravity. It wasn't fair!
"You're not strong, you're not that smart, God knows you're not Handsome-"
"Hey," Jack protested.
"WHY," Spencer continued, taking over him with building irritation. "Is a scrawny little shit like you so..." He couldn't find the words, it was Jack who was always reading, he could probably find the right words, he was a published author after all, he was probably going to write about this in his shitty little blog. Spill secrets to thousands of people around the world while calling Spencer crazy and evil or something like that and getting fucking fan-mail and stalkers Spencer was going to have to slaughter to make sure no one else laid a hand on- WHY THE FUCK DID HE EVEN CARE ABOUT THIS!?
That was when Spencer snapped, he really didn't lose his temper very often, it was just Jack, who seemed to bypass all of Spencer's walls and self control and make him the monster Jack expected to see. He lunged forward off the counter and grabbed Jack by the collar, slamming him up against the wall of the gas station. "You are not better then me," He hissed furiously into Jack's face, infuriated to find he looked almost bored. "If I'm a monster then so are you."
"Maybe I am," Jack drawled, staring right back at Spencer. "But you don't want to be equal to me, you want to be better, and you're not."
"I'm better looking," Spencer bragged, bearing down on Jack till he heard his breath wheeze. When Jack rolled his eyes Spencer let go with one hand and punched Jack across the face. It wasn't very satisfying, it didn't break his nose, or cut him, the cheek would be bruised for a while, but it wouldn't leave a mark. He needed more, always needed more, needed to get his hands inside Jack's guts, covered in warm, sticky blood, needed to carve his name into the fucker's back like a tramp stamp, needed to hold his heart in his hands, or see exactly how Jack's mind worked for himself.
He reversed his punch and elbowed Jack hard in the temple, enough to disorient him so Spencer could drag him away from the counter and into the freezer where they would have some privacy.
It wasn't hard to through Jack to the ground, his false leg never quite gave him traction to resist, and in seconds Spencer was on top of him again, straddling his thighs to keep him down. He paused leaning over Jack, their fogged breaths intermingling in the cold air, their lives bleeding into each others as they always seemed to.
"Tell me Jack, do you think about me when I'm not around?" Spencer asked, soft again, lilting and coaxing as he pulled his hunting knife from the sheath on his belt. Not the sharp one, the serrated one, it hurt more.
"Now why would I do that," Jack drawled back, but he didn't look bored anymore, instead his gaze was fixed on Spencer's knife. Spencer grinned, and shifted a little when he felt's Jack's hand creeping towards his leg. He did have a gift for Jack in his pocket, but it wasn't time to let him steal it yet!
"Come on now Jack~ I think of you every time I look in the mirror and see one of the lovely scars you left me. You've got to think about me every time you put on that fake leg, every time you look down at your hand. If you aren't thinking of me, I clearly haven't done enough damage! What should be the next to go huh? I don't think making your hands even would work. Maybe your ear, maybe a couple of your teeth," he mused, running the blade over Jack's lower lip teasingly.
Jack grimaced, cutting his own lip a little with the motion. "Fine! Yes! I think about you! Is that what you want to hear?" Jack snapped, surprising Spencer so much he actually sat back a little. "I think about you all the time, when I'm trying to remember other things, things that actually matter instead I remember when you were a kid, when I would watch you at recess. Or-or I hallucinate you when there's a threat that has nothing to do with you! I can't get you out of my head no matter how hard I try and I kept the notes you left under the counter at the gas station instead of my house because I'm here more! Is that what you want to hear?!"
Yes, yes that was exactly what Spencer wanted to hear. To know that he existed in Jack's head the same way that Jack existed in his. To know that even if one of them died they would never truly be rid of each other, never really be alone. Spencer stared down at Jack, his eyes wide, completely at a loss for words. It was a mad impulse that had him grabbing Jack's collar and kissing him hard, more of a press of lips and teeth then a kiss, there was no grace to it.
He might have done more, but that was when he felt the bite of a switchblade sinking in to his side and he reeled back. God damn, even knowing it would happen Jack his distracted him enough Spencer hadn't felt those deft fingers sliding into his pocket. He stumbled back and scrambled to his feet. Watching as Jack struggled to do the same, realized he had no leverage and it would take to long and settle for laying at on the floor holding the knife out in front of him towards Spencer looking shell-shocked and confused.
Spencer pressed one hand firmly against the round and grinned down at Jack. "Another scar to remember you by huh? It's a shame I didn't actually get to give you one this time too."
"Trust me, I'm not going to forget this," Jack mumbled, staring at Spencer without blinking.
"I'm sure you won't, and just in case you better keep that fucking knife! It wasn't cheap to get it engraved."
"Engraved...?" Jack said, looking down, it would have been a perfect opportunity to pounce on Jack and take control again, but Spencer actually did want to see his reaction.
To Jack, for anyone else who touches you
Jack's eyes widened and his jaw dropped a little, that was all Spencer needed to see. By the time Jack looked up, before he could think to ask any questions, Spencer was already gone.
