Work Text:
Kunikida sighed when he saw who was calling him. He really didn't have the time to deal with that man today. "What do you want, Dazai?"
"Is that any way to speak to the boss of the Port Mafia?"
"I will hang up on you." Kunikida knew there would be no consequences. If Dazai were to do something, it would upset Atsushi, and that was the last thing the brunet would ever want to do. Kunikida still couldn't believe that Atsushi was dating Dazai Osamu of all people.
Dazai pouted. "Kunikida-kun, don't be mean. I need a favour, that's all."
"What exactly is the favour?" Kunikida didn't trust that it wouldn't be something ridiculous.
"I need you to give Atsushi next week off." Dazai had noticed how tired Atsushi had been lately because of work. So, he planned on taking Atsushi to an onsen where he could relax for the week.
"Sorry, can't happen." Kunikida would like to give Atsushi time off because he was aware of how hard the younger detective had been working on the agency's case, but it wasn't possible.
"Why?" Dazai hadn't expected Kunikida to say no, and he had been so excited to surprise Atsushi with a breakaway.
"The case we're working on right now needs everyone involved." Ranpo was out of the city, so they couldn't rely on him to finish the case, and unfortunately, he wasn't due back for another two weeks.
"Send me the file." If that was the reason, Atsushi wasn't able to get the time off work that could easily fix that.
"What?"
"I'll have what you need to close the case by the end of the day."
"I can't do that." The agency might have an alliance with the Port Mafia, but that doesn't mean Kunikida could share information about current cases.
Dazai was confused. "Why not? You'll get to close a case that you have been struggling with."
"It's not professional." What if it got out that the Port Mafia was solving the agency's cases? It wouldn't do any good for their reputation.
"So? It's not like the public would find out about it, Kunikida-kun. Aren't you tired of working on that case?"
Kunikida thought about it for a moment. He was exhausted and would surely blame the decision on his lack of sleep later. "Fine. Just don't make it a habit."
It becomes a habit.
"I'm sorry, Osamu-san. I won't be able to make our date tonight." Atsushi had been looking forward to meeting up with Osamu all day, but now he didn't even know what time he would be finishing work today.
"Don't worry about it, Atsushi-kun. Is everything okay?" Dazai could hear the stress in Atsushi's tone.
"It's a case. It's just turning out to be more complicated than we first thought." It was supposed to be an easy one, but as Atsushi and Tanizaki investigated, it became clear that it was going to be anything but an easy case. He wasn't looking forward to the long days that the case was going to bring.
When the call ended, Dazai dialled another number. "Hirotsu-san, I have a mission for you." He knew that Atsushi was more than capable of solving the case, but Dazai was a selfish man. He wanted to go on a date with his boyfriend.
Two hours later, Dazai got a call from Atsushi. "Osamu-san, I can still meet up if you haven't made any other plans." Atsushi could hardly believe his luck as the man he and Tanizaki were after showed up at the agency to surrender himself.
Dazai grinned. "Even if I had, I would drop any plans for you, Atsushi-kun." Because spending time with Atsushi was more important to him than anything.
Atsushi was tired. He had been searching all over this area for evidence for a case that the government had requested. If it wasn't for Ranpo stating that the evidence would be here, Atsushi would've given up and tried somewhere else.
When Atsushi heard footsteps, he turned to see Akutagawa coming his way. He sighed. He had no time to deal with him. Even with the alliance between the agency and the Port Mafia, Akutagawa would seek him out for a fight every now and then.
Akutagawa glared at Atsushi as he shoved a file into his chest. "This was over there, and you call yourself a detective."
"Huh?" Atsushi looked at the file, confused. He opened it to inspect the contents. "Wait, this is… " How could an important file like this end up in a back alley? With the evidence that it contained, Atsushi would've thought something like this would've been kept in a guarded safe. He was about to question Akutagawa, but when he looked up, he was already gone.
Atsushi was honestly too tired to question how Akutagawa found the file.
Kunikida scanned through the file. "Good job, Atsushi." There was more than enough evidence here for the government to make their move.
Atsushi rubbed the back of his neck awkwardly. "I can't take credit for finding it. Akutagawa did."
Ranpo started laughing. He had a feeling that Dazai would help out on this case. "How many cases has the Port Mafia solved for us now?"
Kunikida pushed up his glasses. "Twelve."
"They have?" Atsushi didn't know why this was the first time he was hearing about it.
"When your boyfriend wants to spend time with you, or thinks you need a break, he sends us the evidence we need," Yosano explained. Before Atsushi started dating Dazai, she never would've guessed that the mafia boss could be so sweet.
Atsushi could feel his face heat up. "He never mentioned that."
"Because he knew that you would say he didn't have to." Stated Ranpo.
Before Atsushi could even say anything, his phone pinged. Seeing how his eyes lit up, it was obvious to everyone who it was.
Kunikida didn't even need to see the text message to know Dazai was asking Atsushi to meet up. "Go."
"Really?" Atsushi wasn't even going to ask because he was certain Kunikida would've said no.
"Yes. Just complete your report tomorrow." Kunikida had thought they'd be working on the case for another two days at least, so he didn't mind giving Atsushi the rest of the day off.
"Thank you, Kunikida-san." Atsushi bowed and then quickly packed up his things. He had many questions he wanted to ask Osamu. It warmed Atsushi's heart that he had someone looking out for his well-being.
When Atsushi had rushed out the door, Yosano couldn't help but comment, "It's adorable how Atsushi doesn't realise that he has the boss of the Port Mafia wrapped around his little finger."
"Not like Atsushi would take advantage of it, even if he did." Ranpo grinned before continuing, "which is why we are." Since Dazai started helping out, the agency was able to earn more money because they were able to take on more cases. It wasn't something Kunikida was proud of, but they were able to help more people, so he allowed it.
Kunikida does pray that Atsushi never breaks up with Dazai. He didn't even want to imagine the consequences that would follow if that were to happen.
