Monster AU

Summary:

As the title says, this is an AU where Mono is the one to turn into a monster. Why? The Eyes were bored of seeing the same thing over and over again so they changed one small thing. Pretty simple, but I didn’t plan on this being so long, or anything at all really ☠️ The story leads to much more, but I can’t say anything else, lest it spoil the work :)

This work was inspired by “Monster Mono []Little Nightmares 2 Animation[]” by “AIDARE”! The design is from here and the concept got me really interested, and I just started writing. I had no idea where this would lead…

Notes:

POSTING THIS TO CELEBRATE FINALLY COMPLETING LITTLE NIGHTMARES 3!! It only took me 14 hours over the course of 5 days 😎 (To be fair I explored every square inch) This work won’t spoil the third game, but even then, Low and Alone haven’t even been written yet at the time of posting this. So you don’t need to worry! Edit: They actually first arrive in chapter 22!

Also, I don’t like the writing in the first chapter because it sounds so cringey, but it does get better as the chapters go on! At least I think so <:)

Also also! I plan on making this fic a three-part animatic! I just don’t know how to do it, but I do plan on doing it one day! Same with finishing this fic, I’ll update it very slowly but I will NOT forget about it!!!!

Chapter 1: The Beginning.

Chapter Text

She had been put into this room. It was terrifying at first, but no threat was present. Only piles of toys were inside. Along with a music box.
That was the only true thing she cared about. It calmed her, gave her peace of mind, and told her that despite whatever might happen, some things never change. It was safe there, and she had everything she needed to thrive. Even the monster that put her there gave her her own space when she wanted it. Even if she always did. It had also given her a pomegranate and bread, although it was slightly less stale than usual. She ate the bread and every seed of the pomegranate. She couldn’t remember the last time she had eaten, and was reminded of how it felt to not have an empty stomach.
The pomegranate stained her hands. She tried cleaning them by licking it off, but decided that wiping it onto her raincoat would be better. Even if it changed her bright yellow raincoat into a dark blood red, it would come out. It was waterproof after all.
She was protected here, and nobody could hurt her now.

He had been put into this room. The walls were covered in shadows and when he tried to escape he was only greeted with more shadows. A single door was placed in the room, but it didn’t seem to lead anywhere. Not that he would know, there was nothing he could use to break free. He wanted to. It was the only thing he wanted. He hated being alone. He hated not knowing where his only friend was. He hated knowing that she could be gone. He hated knowing that everything he had worked for and survived for could be gone. He hated knowing that she wasn’t here. Just her presence was needed. Just somebody, anybody to reassure him that he wasn’t alone in a world full of monsters that wanted him dead. It felt like an eternity went by until he started noticing that his limbs seemed to have grown. It was subtle, but it was still noticeable. He wasn’t really disturbed by it either. He was still thinking about Six. How trapped she must feel. How scared she must feel. How lonely she must feel.
Hopefully she knows that I’m still here. I’m still waiting to get to her.
His limbs didn’t stop growing either, and the more they did the more voices he heard. It wasn’t from his mind, he had decided, for it wasn’t his voice, but many. Multiple voices were in that room with him. He wanted to have someone there, but not a monster of course!
They started as whispers from time-to-time, then they became more constant, louder, and clearer. He couldn’t make out what they were saying at first, until he heard them say “Six”. Despite his best efforts to hear them clearly and to ask them to repeat themselves, they continued. Until they actually said it again. But this time, another word was used. “Betrayed”. What did they mean? He would never betray her, why would he ever do something like that? He must have heard it wrong, maybe they said something else. But what? When they repeated the words again, he realized that they must be repeating the same words, just more clearly each time. “…Six betrayed…” They said,
It was clear now, but what would Six betray? She had no one but me, right? He saw his arms had gotten bent. What caused it, he didn’t know. He had been sitting in this room for… However long it was. Where was Six? The first chance he got out of this room he would get to her. He hoped she knew that. He hoped that she would be safe and they could get out of this twisted place.
“…Six betrayed you…” They said in the next loop.
He let out an audible gasp, and questioned them. He knew they wouldn’t answer, but what did they mean? He also noticed that it was a bit harder to stand up straight. He had to hunch over for it to feel right.
They wouldn’t answer, of course, but they kept repeating his worst fears. Fears he wouldn’t have ever thought of on his own. Or would he? Were these fears just hidden so deep down, that he pretended like they didn’t exist?
Maybe.
But why would she do it? And, how? How could he stop her?
The voices explained it all soon. How when he rescues her, she drops him. And he becomes the thing he hates most. A Monster, The Thin Man.
About the sixth time of them saying this, did he really half-believe this. It still wasn’t clear why she would do it, maybe she had enough of him, and decided that being alone would be better than being with him. Maybe he had to hold her hand more. Or should he not have? He just wanted to keep her close and safe, but did she want her own space? He could let her go where she wants to go and he’ll follow. Does she know where she is? They were both exploring the world, so they didn’t really know where a safe place was, but she could still do what she wanted. He would still stay with her. He then noticed that he was crying. He had only noticed when a tear hit his hand.
This seemed to be the last straw, as he began to feel more streams of tears flood down. He tried wiping them away with shaking hands, but noticed that they were crooked and his nails were unkempt, leaving them dirty and long. He hiccuped through his sobs, as his appearance was the last thing he really cared about.
Six wouldn’t do it though, Six wouldn’t betray me!
He kept repeating that she wouldn’t betray him, until the voices grew louder than he could possibly say it.
Then he heard the music box. He had heard it all along, but didn’t care. It had been the one constant in his time here.
And he had grown tired of it. Tired of it repeating the same thing over and over again. He wanted it to stop. He wanted everything to stop and go back to how it once was. But where was it?
Did Six ever care about him? Was she planning on leaving him when he was of no use to her anymore? Was he really that insufferable? Even in a world of monsters, she would rather be alone than with him.
His sadness turned to rage. He wanted her to pay. He wanted revenge on something she hadn’t even done yet. Or, did she? How long was he stuck in a loop?
He wanted to feel her skull crushed beneath his teeth. He wanted to feel her heart in the pit of his stomach. He wanted to rip her to shreds, turning that bright yellow raincoat into a dark red.
His mouth seemed to not be able to open correctly, he had to practically force it open with his hands, and he felt his teeth slide against one another. His teeth were like needles now, with each one being slightly curved. He then noticed his paper bag on the ground, a rip went through one of the eye holes and through the bottom. He needed it now, to conceal himself from everything. He got used to switching his hats with Six, ones that showed his face. But now when he actually needed it, it wouldn’t work. Nothing can hide him now. He was a monster here, and everywhere else. He was warped by pain.
The door. He could open it now couldnt he? He crept closer to it, then decided that he might as well break it down. He pushed it with his hand and the door broke, then opened a portal to the outside. He went through, only to realize that it was inside the tower. He was still trapped.
But the music box played. Louder than it was before, just like the voices. He wanted it to stop. He followed the sound and went through a maze of doors. He had to turn and twist his head to see above him, as his disheveled hair had grown over his eyes, longer than it ever was before.
He soon came across a door that had the sound of the music box coming from right inside the room. He broke down the door, and saw Six. It was only now he noticed how big he actually was. She could fit and die in his palm.
She screamed when she saw him. Maybe this is how she had always seen him. As a monster. And this was just her fears coming true. Were they always real?
He tried to say something, but all that came out was groans. He had lost his voice, or it was corrupted. She ran past him, as she was still small enough to escape him. He ran after her, wanting her to come back and face him. Wanting her to look at him one last time before he killed her.

She was sitting in the room, listening to how the music echoed through the room and halls. It was the same tune, one that reassured everyone that heard it that things do stay the same, and that there were still places in the world where peace was available. Nothing else could harm her, and everything that could was gone.
Until the door crashed down. It was sudden and abrupt and she screamed. She wasn’t one to scream, but something huge had crashed it down. It looked like Mono. She looked at it to try and see if it was just similar, or if something had actually happened. She felt guilty, they were together just a bit ago, and something had happened to him that made him turn out this way?
He roared something that almost sounded like “hey”, though it was almost impossible to tell now. She ran past him, there had to be some sort of exit nearby. And she heard him crashing into things towards her. Though he was bigger, she could still hide and escape through small things he couldn't. But what happened to him? She really shouldn’t be thinking about him when he was trying to kill her, but her curiosity got the better of her. Wasn’t he still outside of the tower? Still searching for her? Had he not gone through a TV to get here? What did he do to turn out this way?
