Til Death Did We Meet Again

Summary:

Five years. For five long years, I've slowly killed you again, brought the ruin I promised I would so many decades ago.

The sheets no longer smell of you, pillow cold. Your hideous clothing I either wear or have tucked against my person muted. The toiletries I could replace I simply didn't, using them to their last. And my snood now sits wrapped around our first grandchild, passed between the kids.

The greatest of me was every child provided by you, and as they continue on to shift from being our legacy to their own, I feel free to join you. I do believe I am done.

Notes:

Last one! Day 23, baby!

Death.

Of course, will I ever make the fic this universe of mine came from? Sure. Maybe. Probably. It's surreal being besieged by thoughts of a fic that doesn't exist.

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

“Be sure to say ‘hi’ to Mother for us, Mamá.” Just as stoic as the elderly woman laying in a wild black-and-rainbow bed, Melinoë offered a tight-lipped smile to the curt nod she received from Wednesday Addams. Contrary to her most ardent wishes growing up, the once-eldest heir of the Addams Family didn’t have a grand finale of a crime gone right. Instead, it was a boring and peaceful life with Enid, culminating in two utterly fantastic daughters, with their own children well on their way through life. It was bliss.

Having already sent Enid to the beyond to join the rest of the family years ago, everyone was quite certain Wednesday was simply giving up. Melinoë and her sister had watched the light leave their Mamá steadily, no amount of séance visitation fixing the lack of the golden sun they had all revolved around. Gathered with them at the Addams Family mansion were Wednesday’s siblings and some of the extended family, the rest on their way from around the globe to celebrate the passing of another of their own. True to her other mother, Meli’s sister Almeria was a sobbing mess, barely kept aloft by her husband. Pugsley was no better with his wife, Wednesday rolling dull eyes pointedly at his antics.

“Live as dreadfully as you can, all of you. I’ll be sure to invent a new form of death if I see any of you over there any time soon.”

With one last glance at what made up the best part of her on this Earth, Wednesday Addams shut her eyes for the last time in the land of the living.

Waking with a sharp inhale, the psychic blinked away what felt like eons of sleep, her brain that was always slow to begin a day already struggling with what she was seeing. What looked eerily like the old school counselor room from Nevermore, Wednesday nearly recoiled hard enough to fall off the couch she was sitting on when she raised a hand to rub the sleep away. Staring at hands that looked to be from her mid-20s, the seer was busy giving herself a full once-over when a knock on the door interrupted her.

Waiting a beat, the door opens to reveal a young-ish man in a crisp suit. Face breaking into a wide smile, Wednesday for a moment thought of her wife. “Ahh! You’ve finally woken up. Excellent.”

Taking a seat across from her, the man set a notebook on the table between the two of them before crossing one leg over the other knee, hands clasped atop them. Feeling drawn to the ring on his finger, Wednesday shook it off and glared at her visitor. “Where am I.”

Unphased, the man was quiet for a moment, before his poker face broke into a chuckle. “I’m sorry. I just wanted to enjoy the iconic ‘Wednesday Glare’ for a moment.” Exhaling before smiling again, the man with a perfect stubble and an obnoxious quiff spoke softly, hands gesticulating in another eerie reminder of her wife. “You’re in Hell, darling.”

Quirking an eyebrow, the seer ignored the man’s visible joy at what she was sure was another one of her iconic gestures. “My Hell is a therapist’s office?” Receiving an even more aggravating shrug at that, Wednesday balled her hands tight enough for her bones to protest. “And you are?”

“Right! Where are my manners. Forgive me. I’m the Devil.”

Losing control of her face muscles for a second as her brain shut down, Wednesday tried pinching the bridge of her nose and taking deep breaths to stop the twitch behind her eyeball. Repeating the words back to him, her efforts were to no avail when the man simply nodded. “The Devil is a posh British man?”

“I can flip to the exposed flesh and glowing eyes if you’d like.”

Sighing loudly, Wednesday motioned for the whole thing to simply proceed. Again unphased, the man she’d never deem the Lord of Darkness went on to disclose that she was currently residing in what served as a form of Purgatory. “You actually have no need to be here at all, I’m afraid. Unlike your wife Enid. But your ancestors made a deal centuries ago and so I make it a point to meet with every Addams.”

Eyes widening just a moment, Wednesday shot upright and snapped. “Wait. Enid was here? Enid had to be here?”

Waving it off, ‘Lucifer’ chuckled. “Don’t worry. Your lovely –“ he ignored the growl across from him “-wife was only here for a few hours. She felt guilty to have gone ahead of you but we resolved that quickly.”

Lip curled and fingers clawing into the couch beneath her, Wednesday softened just a little. Noticing, ‘Lucifer’ smiled. “I would have sent her up to Heaven but since she’s an Addams, she’s with the rest of your expansive clan.” “Send me to her.”

Finally the man audaciously presenting himself as Lucifer was phased. “You don’t want to talk? Surely you have questions for me?”

“I refuse to believe you.” Watching the man roll his eyes, it only served to make Wednesday even more sure. The Devil would not be so exasperated over this, even if he was a posh British man of all things. Scowling as the man rolled his eyes and muttered something about how nobody believes the devil who never lies, she watched him stand up. “Fine, fine. If you change your mind, the door will always be open.”

Walking over to the only door in the office, he gestured for her to join him before he opened it. Seeing nothing but a void, Wednesday glared at the man. “For goodness’ sake, I’m not lying. A few steps into the veil and you’ll arrive.” Amused but ignoring the death glare and accompanying threat of violence, ‘Lucifer’ watched the stoic psychic walk past him and into the endless. “It was a pleasure! You’re all so delightfully unique!”

Before Wednesday could throw a glare behind her, the world shifted. What was nothing became something, something pink and warm and believed to have been lost to her. Overtaken by the everything that had crashed into her, Wednesday wrapped her arms tight around an ever-radiant blond. Tears held firm behind her eyelids, each forceful breath bringing warmth back into her soul. Even in the beyond, her werewolf was the brightest star in the darkness. Being formless didn’t matter. Enid Addams could restore color, the same way she restored Wednesday so very long ago.

Feeling Enid pull back just enough, Wednesday beheld her wife once more, and it felt like the first time all over again. Not a day past their twenties, same as she found herself in that therapist office. Golden hair, streaked with inky ribbons. Her scars were still prominent on her face, the blue and pink braids on the other side rich enough to have been freshly dyed. But all of that paled to those eyes, blues so deep that one life wasn’t enough for the psychic. Not to experience those depths, not nearly enough to experience every ouch of adoration and love that poured from her Enid’s bottomless wellspring.

“Howdy, Wens.”

Cracking, Wednesday could only respond with a choked sob before she was pulled into another firm embrace. Clawing at the werewolf’s back to try and get closer, being pressed so tight into her wife’s larger frame that it should hurt not nearly enough, Wednesday sobbed into Enid’s shoulder. “Enid...I tried. I did. I just…”

“I know, Wens. It’s okay. I’m right here.” Sniffing, Enid carded her fingers through her seer’s hair, quietly wondering if Wednesday even noticed her braids were undone. Letting the psychic have as long as she needed, eventually they parted again just to look at one another. Watching Wednesday tilt her head up in an open invite, the wolf was far too happy to oblige, leaning down and closing her eyes as warm lips met once more.

It felt like Spring, the breaking of the storm to the gorgeous light of day. Pushing further into her wolf, Wednesday loved it above all things as she sought more. Enid Addams had spent years chipping away at the seer’s defenses, tore through the darkness she thought she wanted wrapped around her. When she found the delicate heart tucked away in the corner, the werewolf had cradled it close and treasured it, loved her all the more for it. The Daughter of Woe could only respond in kind, the Addams blood set on fire with the overpowering need to never let one Enid Addams suffer a single moment in her life forevermore.

Lips parting in a gentle smack, rich brown eyes glistened as they looked up at deep blues, knowing immediately life had been well spent. Blinding Wednesday with a grin, Enid laced their fingers together before tilting her head. “Come on, let’s go see everyone.”

Realizing the land around them looked like a facsimile to the Addams property, Wednesday tucked into her wolf’s side as the two walked to the house in the distance. Door opening ahead of their arrival, her steps paused only once as she saw Morticia and Gomez waiting for her.

“Our little scorpion!”

Being rushed a second time, Wednesday was gathered up in her father’s arms, Enid having stepped away just enough to avoid her jovial in-law. Released, the seer looked up at her mother, accepting a lighter hug than her father and a warm smile. “So good to see you, my storm cloud. Did you have a good talk with Lucifer?”

Glaring daggers at Morticia, Wednesday scooted back towards Enid, latching onto her as seamlessly as Gomez did his wife. “That was not the Devil.” Almost confused at the round of chuckling she received for it, even from her werewolf, Wednesday maintained her glare.

“Unfortunately, dear, we have it on good authority it is.”

“Wednesday!” Before she could address the shared opinion of the room, wrong as it surely was, Wednesday turned in time to twist and flip Uncle Fester onto his back behind her. “Uncle Fester.”

“Did someone say Wednesday?!” Stopped from enjoying her retort to her Uncle, the psychic saw the delight on her Enid’s face as she turned to see a face she hadn’t in a long time. “Aunt Calpurnia?”

The woman standing not far from them was quick to approach, ghosting her hands on the touch-averse seer’s shoulders. Greeting her with a manic smile, Aunt Calpurnia looked as deranged as she always had in life. That Wednesday had joined everyone soon rippled through the house, other Addams coming out of the woodwork to see their latest addition. Realizing it was no less than the usual Addams reunion, Wednesday was kept glued to Enid’s side as they made the rounds, the family just as thrilled to see the psychic as they were her wife who lit up the world once again.

With no need to physically retire, let alone the ability anyway, the two women stole themselves away from time to time. Not that time seemed to matter. Talking on a familiar balcony, Enid let the seer know it hadn’t at all felt like years since she was alive at Wednesday’s side. “I know in my soul, at least. I know each time I was called by you guys, it had been some time. I could see it.”

Watching Enid play with her fingers like she used to when she was nervous, Wednesday set her free hand over her wolf’s as she recounted the time that had stood still since that fateful day. How their daughters were thriving. How they had finally found some answers for Thing. Who Pubert eventually settled with. What their friends from Nevermore were doing. Having learned long ago to never lie to her wife who was always held last by her own family, Wednesday admitted to how poorly she had lived in her last years.

Pulling the pliant seer into her lap, Enid showered the side of Wednesday’s face and the crown of her head in light kisses, arms wrapping around her belly. “I’d have been the same, ya know. We mate for life. Heck, I’d have probably been more of a wreck than you.” Chuckling through tears that lined her eyelids, the wolf nuzzles into her psychic’s hair to wipe them away. “We really do get forever, huh?”

Sliding a hand up to curl around Enid’s cheek, Wednesday leans over enough to tilt her head and look up at her wife. “Of course, darling. Death cannot stop an Addams from their love.” Leaning in for another kiss, it was as sweet and warm as always, the feeling coursing through the once-eldest heir of the family to her fingers and toes. Melting into her wife, Wednesday Addams was finally home once more, their muted afterlife given light and color by a werewolf made of sunshine.

What felt like a few weeks at most, the pair were awoken in their old bedroom by the pounding of feet outside their door and some undiscernible yelling. Laughing, Enid squeezed Wednesday into her, nudging the cascade of black hair away to find some skin to kiss. “That’d be your Aunt. Seems there’s another séance being held. Wanna get up and see?”

As slow to rouse as ever, the seer grumbled and wiggled closer towards her wolf. Before she could snuggle the timeless morning away, they were interrupted by banging on their door.

“Hey lovebirds! It’s for you!” The cackle didn’t alleviate the snarl Wednesday through towards the door. Chuckling behind her, Enid sat up, stretching out of habit a body that was no longer solid. Heaving herself up, Wednesday followed suit, filing away for later an inquiry into why she still functioned this way even in death.

Throwing on their robes, the two exited the room to a still-gleeful Aunt Calpurnia, nearly exploding in her skin. Before either woman could ask what was going on, the woman was shoving the pair down the hall. Passing other members of the family, including Grandmamá who could only roll her eyes at their antics, Wednesday grunted a greeting to her parents as they arrived at the usual room. Taking a seat quickly to receive her wife, Enid tucked Wednesday onto her lap just in time for the ghost lights in the room to flare up. Watching the veil form in front of them, the two gasped when the faces on the other side took shape.

“Hey Mother! Mamá!” Seated in the same room in the living world, their daughters gazed at their deceased mothers fondly. Almeria was barely holding back tears as always, grinning wider and brighter than even her Mother. Melinoë wasn’t reserved enough to hold back a smile, Wednesday’s trademark dimples standing out clearly. “We’re just checking in on you. No worries, nothing is wrong on our end. It’s only been a year.”

Sharing the latest news, the two women had long helped continue the Addams Family, the next generation already making their own names in the world. Both were happy to see that their Mamá ironically had the light back in her eyes, Meli having the courage to rib Wednesday on the matter. Interrupted by the starlight werewolf’s youngest, Almeria tugged her son into view of their séance to chat with his grandparents as well. It always made Wednesday still for a moment, the young man having been named after her pet scorpion as a child. Because of course her and Enid’s child would cherish her black little heart.

Shifting in her wolf’s arms, Wednesday shared a look with her wife before leaning in for a kiss. Parting to converse with their daughters and family, she knew peace once again, reunited with her werewolf and looking upon her children and grandchildren, knowing they would continue on to have wonderful stories of their own to share when their time came.

Notes:

I would like to thank each and every person that spent the time to read through my Wenclairtober '25 works. If any of you have looked at my profile here, I've clearly spent a long time on AO3. Actually feels quite nice to have my own works up here too.

I would also like to apologize if this one was harder to read than the past two. This one was hard to *write*. The meaning of my username on here aside, my greatest issue with the "A" word is that I love these characters. Whatever IP I look up, I look up for those characters, and abhor their suffering. It was irritating to be teary-eyed so often as I built this.

I really am weak to myself so stay tuned for the big one. It's far more likely than not to happen. Cuz you know what's even worse? I've already fractured the big one in my mind to two different paths. *WHAT*
