Work Text:
Cass was in a simple black dress as she sat next to Steph. All the bat siblings had agreed to attend this gala, leaving the patrolling to Batwoman, because Tim was going to make his public debut as co-CEO of Wayne Enterprises. It was without question he would get the support of his whole family.
A caterer came to the table to offer drinks to everyone and Jason grabbed two, one for himself and the other he offered to Cass, “I know you usually like to stay sober, but the first minute or so are gonna be painful before Replacement gets in the zone”
Cass nodded and accepted the offered beverage. She’d gotten better about consuming food and drinks at events, and today happened to be one of the days she wasn’t held back by her childhood. So she took a sip from the beverage. As the event continued, people still filtering in for the speech, Cass kept slowly sipping her drink.
Watching her siblings from a distance, Cass was glad that the people attending had decided to leave her alone. Maybe it was the thought of a Gotham socialite approaching her, but a twinge of…naseua? Made her dread speaking.
That’s when Bruce got on stage, calling out to everyone that he had an announcement for the crowd. The speakers, despite being a fair distance from Cass, seemed to make her head pound with each word from Bruce. However, she kept her composure and watched Tim take the stage.
“As you just heard from Bruce” What was she supposed to have just heard from Bruce? “As of today, I am going to be co-CEO of Wayne Enterprises” Yes, that, the reason for the event. Wasn’t Tim’s face sharper earlier? She could’ve sworn- “-and I have several plans I’d like to share with you that I think could improve-” the words got a bit fuzzier around the edges and Cass’ headache grew with each attempt to grasp onto what Tim was saying.
She turned to whoever sat by her, vision swimming, the person, who she assumed was Steph because of the blob of blonde, seemed to be too focused on the speech. Trying to get her attention, Cass opened her mouth as another wave of nausea hit. All words left her as she started worrying about what was happening to her.
Waiting until she thought it was an appropriate time to leave, “-I think-” her body started aching. The same way it used to when she was little and she was about to be unable to move. So, she took her shot before she’d be unable to move. Shoving past a few attendees, she made her way to a secluded hallway in the manor.
Her legs shook as she started feeling the walls for a door, the woods blending together. She finally found one that was also unlocked and fumbled her way into the room. As she stumbled and grabbed a surface, cold and blindingly white - porcelain, a hand grabbed her shoulder. Cass turned violently and shook off the unknown person, but the gesture made the nausea rise. Turning to what she hoped was a toilet, she cleared her stomach and started dry heaving afterwards.
“-hold your alcohol?” her ears finally seemed under her control again as Jason’s voice filled the room, “thought you’d be able to handle one glass”
High tolerance, she signed before having to use one of her hands to keep herself upright.
“Do you think you were drugged?”
Cass blinked a bit, stumped at that. She had an inhumanely high tolerance to most toxins. It was rare for her to be affected by anything, but what if. What if someone did get a toxin that could affect her?
Steph entered the room behind Jason, moving to get beside Cass and support her, “Are you alright? We saw you stumbling away during Tim’s speech”
She opened her mouth, trying to speak again, but she felt bile rise when words refused so she closed it again and signed, leaning on Steph for support, Could be better.
Jason gave a little chuckle in response, “Anybody could be better after being drugged” Steph’s mouth dropped slightly and she started worrying all about Cass, “Steph, you help her and make sure nothing happens. I’m going to grab that glass and try and inform Babs, Dick, or whoever else I can find so they know why we’re going to disappear and can hopefully grab Alfred”
No need for Alfred. Just need rest, Cass replied.
“Nuh uh, you just got drugged, you need Alfred” Steph said as she helped Cass stand up, “I’m going to take her to the cave. Send him down to us when you can Jay”
Jason nodded and left to grab Alfred and the tampered drink. Cass sighed as she resigned herself to getting helped down to the cave.
