Work Text:
Gene was sitting outside a Manhattan coffee shop. Though he wore a jacket, his sweater and americano could keep him warm.
Gene’s eyes rested on a man at another table. He was in a short-sleeved shirt, rubbing his arms. His sweet face looked so uncomfortable.
The man met Gene’s gaze, and Gene beckoned him over. He approached Gene, sitting across from him.
“You just looked so cold,” Gene said. “Do you want to wear my coat?”
The man hesitated, his brow furrowing. He then relaxed. “Sure, I wouldn’t mind it.” He had a faint English accent.
Gene got up and placed his jacket over the man. He started putting his arms through it, but pulled them out upon realizing how long the sleeves were.
“Now, why are you out here without a coat?” Gene asked, sitting down.
“I’m visiting from LA. Forgot a coat, and there was no room inside.”
A monarch butterfly flitted by, a rare sight in the city. It reminded Gene of when he had that house in Westchester County. His eyes traced it before returning to the man.
“What’s your name?” Gene asked.
He softly smiled. “Richard.”
“Richard.” Gene paused. “I’m Gene. Nice to meet you.”
