To the One Who’ll Keep the Light

Summary:

Chapter1(Ep.202) — What if the decision Lloyd made, and the resolve he found in that moment, were born from a memory — from someone’s words that once reached his heart?

Chapter2(Ep.205) — On the day of the final battle, standing before the Reincarnation Gate, Lloyd recalls those words once more. A monologue, drifting like a memory’s afterimage, to the one he’ll leave behind.

Chapter3(Future Chapter (TBA)) — Javier’s answering monologue, a journey of searching for the one who vanished into the light.

A three-part poetic short — fragments of devotion, memory, and the quiet light that remains after everything ends.

Ep.202

Helkaros: "Why don't you sing a song?"  "Of course, I'm the only one who finds your singing pleasant."

Lloyd: "…!"

Haviel (memory): "Lord Lloyd,"  "I prefer your songs──"

Lloyd (thinking): "…Huh."  "You’ve been watching me all this time, yet you understood nothing, huh?"

Lloyd (thinking): "…I’m okay."

Lloyd (aloud): "Hey, King of Hell!"

Lloyd (thinking): "That's why I can take this step."

Lloyd (aloud): "How about we talk?"

Lloyd (thinking): "Because those words are always, always here in my heart."

Lloyd (thinking): (Even if it means being alone again.)

End.

Lloyd (thinking):

…Without reason, memories surface.
One of those countless nights on the road—
when I cooked for you, and you looked so surprised.

I’d lived alone long enough
to be better at it than you, you know.

Watching that guarded look of yours soften,
little by little,was something
I quietly came to treasure.

I still remember your first small smile,
when you said it was good.

That smile—I’ll never reach it again.

What I’m about to do will hurt you.
I rewrote this story so you’d never wear
that same expression as the Iron-Blooded Knight…
and yet, here we are.

So it’s all right to forget.
          But—please, don’t.

You once told me,

that the ugliest song in the world
could still be the most sacred one—
and you said it with the gentlest voice.

That echo kept me alive this far.
That faint light in my chest gave me courage to move.

So this final breath I take in this world,
I leave to you alone.

Ah… such things can be forgotten.
But please, don’t forget.

Think of me as you will.
If, in the world I’ve vanished from,
there comes a day when you can truly smile again—

The small smile
you showed by the fire that night,
soft as starlight.

Don’t forget it.

          Forget—if you must.

End.

Ep.207

Javier (thinking): "In a shallow doze, a shadow flickered beyond the fire."

"I blinked, focused—yet all that waited was air, wavering in the heat."

"The familiar hand reaching toward me was nothing more than a fragment of night."

Javier(thinking):

…What were his last words?
What did he call me, there at the end?
Now the memory stains the tale like a blot of ink,
blurred, wandering—just as I am.

Only his final words
have pinned my heart to a cross,
and still, somehow,I continue to breathe.

Was it punishment?
Once, I looked upon him with cold calculation—
use him, so long as he serves the realm.
In truth, my eyes were no different
from the very King of Hell I so despised.

—Ah. I wish I could hear a song.

A gentle one—the kind that melts into the hush of night,
soft as magic,
woven from drowsiness and peace.

If I could hear even a drop
of the feeling you once poured into that voice,
I would gladly surrender my hearing altogether.

I summon you, piece by piece—

your voice, your face, your back, your will.
Your gaze, your hands, your breathing, your gestures, your scent,
your heartbeat, your warmth, your smile.

And then I try—try to imagine them fading,
and at last disappearing.

I cannot. I never could.
I know no feeling in this world as fierce as this.

Where am I to bury a grief that cannot even claim a grave?
If I could burn it down to ash, I’d scatter it to sea or sky.

Ah… that song.

The one you claimed was the ugliest in the world,
and the one you told me—
with the gentlest voice I've ever heard—
was also the most sacred.

Once, you laughed and told me that I should become a poet.
If singing your elegy is what a poet must do,
then may my voice shatter instead.

Only his final breath has lingered in these lungs,
and still, somehow, I continue to breathe.

If this is not love—and yet it hurts,
hurts this deeply—

then I must truly be incapable of loving anyone at all.

End.
