Queen's Gambit

Summary:

"To be fair, we were drunk."

Notes:

This came about because of a comment made by a user in another Mammon story. Sadly I can not remember nor find the name, granted I'm not sober right now lol. So if you're reading this, this is thanks to you!

Chapter Text

The scroll was long, glowing gold, floating above the coffee table, and binding.

“To be fair, we were drunk.”

Diavolo gave a small “eep.” at the now much darker glare aimed at him. Next to Lucifer, Mammon remained quiet, partly in fear, but mostly because of his hangover.

“And where was Barbatos during this?” Lucifer finally asked.

“Ah. Well.” Diavolo scratched the back of his head, sheepish, “He lost...a lot. And was sulking in the corner.”

Well, that at least explains why he isn’t here.” Lucifer closed his eyes, took a deep breath, and let out an even deeper sigh. When he opened them, Diavolo was still there with an apologetic expression, his brother still next to him; and the glowing binding contract had not disappeared. The glowing binding contract that stated for four months, Mammon was to be the ruling Prince.

Prince.

All because his brother won a game of chess while absolutely plastered.

Lucifer closed his eyes again, and took another deep breath.

The glowing binding contract was still there.

“…...I didn’t think Barbatos to be a sore loser.” Lucifer said, looking away and trying not to think for a moment.

“He’s usually not,” Diavolo agreed, “but I think it’s because if Mammon had lost to either of us. He would have had to marry us.”

Lucifer’s eye started twitching.

Mammon hid his face in his hand, and groaned.

“We’re doomed!”

Levi dramatically fell over the back of the sofa

Sitting on the other sofa, Mammon rolled his eyes.

“We are not doomed.” Lucifer sighed for the third time.

“Mammon is going to be in charge for four months!” Asmo wailed, “Do you know what kind of damage he could do in that time!? Oh, I think my hair is starting to fall out!”

“Your hair will be fine.” Lucifer rolled his eyes.

“Nope.” Belphie shook his head, patting Levi’s back to console him, “Asmo will be bald, and the Kingdom will be nothing but dust, or worse.”

“I’m right here.” Mammon grumbled.

“I don’t think it’ll be that bad.” Beel offered, getting a weak smile for the second-born.

Satan who had been reading his book, and pretty much ignoring the chaos, nodded in agreement. “At worst, Mammon will probably try, and rob the vault; and that’s only if his Greed starts acting up. Plus Barbatos would stop him.”

Mammon smiled at him, and patted his lap in invitation. Satan’s eyes lit up, and he went over, happily laying his head down; and continuing his book.

“Kiss-ass.” Belphie scoffed, expression envious.

“Again.” said Lucifer, his expression silencing Asmo’s wailing. “We are not doomed, I will not allow Mammon to cause trouble.”

Mammon’s hand which had been petting Satan’s head, paused.

Satan gave his brother a curious look, but Mammon just smiled, and resumed his petting.

“Why is life so cruel?!” Levi sobbed.

~.~.~.~

“I’ve gone over the contract, and it’s binding.”

“I mean, Diavolo and Barbatos aren’t just any low level demons.”

Lucifer’s frown deepened, “I’m aware. And while I am grateful, and proud of your skills as they allowed this to not end in marriage. It is still a problem.”

“I guess?”

“Mammon.”

Uh-oh.”

Lucifer’s eyes narrowed, and his brother said nothing more. “Starting tomorrow, you’ll be in a position of power and responsibility. And we both know you’ve proven to be lacking in that department.”

Mammon winced.

“To minimize any damages, and hopefully prevent wars. I will be with you, motoring, and helping.”

“I mean Barb—”

Lucifer raised a brow.

“….Right.”

Nodding Lucifer shuffled some of the papers on his desk, before moving on.

“Now, care to explain how your possible lost would have ended in marriage?”

“Erm?”

~.~.~.~

Well, Lucifer wasn't a surprise.” Mammon grimaced, his big bro was going to practically be living in his skin with how close he’d be watching him.

His other brothers however, he had hoped they would have had a little more faith in him, apparently that wasn't the cause. His little brothers were assholes….expect for Satan and Beel.

Sighing, Mammon sat up from his bed, with a snap of his fingers, the contract appeared, floating. He read it over, and yep pretty binding. And left no room for doubt, starting tomorrow, Mammon will be the acting Prince, and with all that came with it. Humming, Mammon thought over his options, technically, he could break it off. It would take some fancy word play, and magic, but it could be done. However what his brothers –mainly Lucifer—had said really struck a cord with him.

While he wasn’t a Prince like Diavolo, he was still a Prince. He had proven himself to be worthy of the throne should anything happen to Diavolo and Lucifer. Meaning he was fully capable of doing this for four months.

...And I think it’s about time I proved it.”
