Work Text:

The fire crackled, with Damian tucked against Jasons side- halfway to dreamville, eagerly waiting for his first visit from santa.

“Is it okay that we celebrate Christmas too?” He asked, watching the chesnuts pop and crackle in the fireplace.

“Of course it is.” Jason replied, scoffing as Dick held up a vinyl. “Not that one- its old. Use the Michael Bublé edition, like God intended, you menace.” He teased, combing a hand in Damian’s hair.

“You both are part of the family, D. No takebacks. And when we celebrate- we go all in.” Dick confirmed, starting the vintage christmas carols (despite Jason's protests). Bruce smiled from the chair, opening his arms- letting Damian snuggle up in his lap as Tim took his spot. Jason leaned against the side, while Dick and Tim draped themselves over the floor.

Bruce smiled softly. “This was all I wanted for Christmas, for the longest.” He confessed.

“What? A fireplace?” Jason teased.

“No, smartass.” Bruce replied fondly. “All my boys- in one roof.” He said softly, kissing Damians forehead. “And happy. Safe in my arms.” He sighed, relaxing back as Dick hummed softly.

“Merry Christmas, you guys.” He murmured. “Here’s to a happy new year.”

Damian giggled softly, draping a hand down to Jasons cheek as the older smiled up to him. “Merry christmas, habibi.”

“Merry christmas, abéh.” He murmured back, drifting off to sleep in the warmth, and safety, of his family.

It took a few hours- but before long, it was only Bruce and Jason awake.

“I never thought I’d live long enough to see this.” Jason murmured.

“See what, little one?”

“Them. All of them- happy, and safe. I thought…I thought when Joker killed me, that was it.” Jason whispered, feeling Bruce’s hand in his hair. “But I lived.”

“You did.” Bruce murmured. “And I’m glad you did.”

The silence that encompassed them was punctured only by the crackle of the fireplace- warm and welcoming in a way that neither of them ever thought they’d feel to the other again.

“Sleep, little bird. I’ll be here.” Bruce murmured- the last words Jason heard before he fell asleep, tucked between Tim and Dick.

Notes:

Shoutout thejokerscrowbar and woozioveralls for finally getting me back on my computer to write batboys, otherwise this would have died in my drafts lmao.

(this may or may not have been what the happy ending would have been)
