Work Text:

In Tokyo, when night fell, and the sky turned dark, the lights of streets and buildings shone brightly, and sometimes, just for a moment, Hinata felt time stop.

The nights, the lights are endless, he thought to himself. In Tokyo, it was louder, conversations never ceased, crowds never seemed to dull, as if the night never slept.

In Miyagi, when night fell, the moon shone the brightest, not the least bit tampered by lights. Street lights shone dimly, or at least to Hinata, it didn’t overpower the moon’s radiancy. Lights went out, near the mountain, it was quiet, peaceful, and for him, Miyagi did fall asleep at night.

Today, the differences were very apparent to him, today, right now, for Hinata, the night was asleep.

“I want today to be really cold.” Hinata thought mindlessly, and biking down the hill, he thought of silent dark blue eyes.

“Kageyama!”, Beamed Hinata brightly, smiling warmly, pleasant, welcoming in the cool, cool depths of night.

Kageyama looked at him questioningly from his doorstep, and asked after a beat of 10 seconds, “What are you doing here, you idiot?”

Hinata shrugged and said, a smile still painted on his face, “Let’s go get pork buns!”

“It's cold. You came here at night… for pork buns?” Kageyama didn’t decline, his voice was tinged with a bit of amusement.

Hinata smiled at the silly boy standing in front of him, and staring into his dark eyes, he said, “Eating pork buns by myself is no fun, and you know it.”

Kageyama nodded, and went to get his coat, scarf and gloves.

“Race you there!” Hinata yelled, already running up ahead, earning a “Dumbass!” from Kageyama, and the two ran, lights out, street silent, the moon brighter in its wake.

The first few droplets of snow went unnoticed by the two.

“Hah! I win! That’s…261 wins for me, and…” Hinata paused for a moment, wiggling his eyebrows, which earned a hard stare from the other. “And 273 losses!”

Kageyama huffed, “Why do you seem more enthusiastic about the losses than the wins?”

Hinata gasped, and chuckled, head rolling to the side, landing softly on his shoulder.

They laid still in the snow.

“What’s so funny?” Kageyama cocked an eyebrow.

“I think,” Hinata began slowly, “The more losses I have, I get closer to catching up to you.”

He pondered for a moment, his eyes warm, blazing, and the dark haired boy wanted to sink in, drench himself under that gaze.
“Let’s get the pork buns, idiot.”

Hinata got up, brushing the snow off his knees, and they ordered two pork buns.

“Eh? Yamayama, you’re paying?” Hinata seemed to be quite expressive today, Kageyama thought mindlessly, “Why does he look so surprised?”

In response, he shook his head. A grin, “I win.”

“Ehhh? I don’t accept this win! Should I count all the times I paid for you then? Plus, I invited you all the way here, you know.”

“It feels warm, now let me pay before I buy an extra pork bun and leave your pockets empty.” He said resolutely.

“It’s very cold! Fine then, Niceyama, you can pay!” He hopped around, grabbing his scattered bike, getting ready to leave.

They walked in silence, street lights silent, and cars passed by. Time went by slowly.

It was already late.

“I wanted it to be cold today.” Hinata said, breaking the comfortable silence.

“Well it is winter, or did all the steam from your bun get into your head?”

“Rude! And you’re the one who said it was warm!” Hinata said.

Kageyama stayed silent at that, before he said firmly, “It was the vibes.”

“Did Yachi tell you about all of that?” He giggled.

“You know.” Hinata began again.

Kageyama groaned silently, “Do you not know when to shut that loud mouth of yours?”

Hinata gasped, “Rude-Yamayama! Just because you bought me a pork bun, doesn’t mean you can be evil.” He finished his sentence with a huge gust of laughter, before he quieted down and said silently, “Today, Miyagi’s night, seems awake.”

Kageyama said nothing, but as always, he understood what the red head said.

“I like it cold sometimes, too.” Hinata said.

“It’s warm right now.” Kageyama stated casually.

And only the two of them know who the two are talking about.
