Devin laid down on his couch, his head laying on the arm of it while his legs were propped on Ennui’s lap. Currently, the two were just watching some type of horror movie from the 80’s which, in all honesty, wasn’t scary at all. It was just something that they found interesting to dissect.
Even though Ennui was goth and Devin was emo, they still enjoyed doing things together; like watching movies, hanging out, talking, etc. This time, they were hanging out at Devin’s house by themselves because honestly, he needed a break from Carrie for a bit. Even though they were best friends, he knew that she had a crush on him. A huge crush, that was painfully obvious to everyone around, including him.
He tried to ignore it at first, chalking it up to her being an emotional teenage girl, just like him. But then the crush started to grow more and more. She’d hold his hand more, cling on to him, call him everyday. Hell, he had to personally ask her if he could hang out with Ennui today. At least she allowed him to do that, so that’s something.
But that wasn’t the problem area. Sure, he loved Carrie to the moon and back. He would even go as far to say that he had a bit of a crush on her. But the problem was that his heart was set on another person besides his best friend. As Devin looked up at his friend texting someone on his phone, his heart started to flutter.
It’s not like he meant to fall in love with him….it just happened gradually. How could he not have a crush on someone that he spends most of his time with, besides Carrie? He didn’t even know he was bisexual before meeting him, which was kind of crazy because there were totally some good looking dudes back in his school. So why did his heart choose Ennui?
“This movie is so predictable. I’ve seen it a thousand times…” The goth boy spoke, blinking before turning off the tv. Devin didn’t realize that the tv was off until Ennui shifted under his legs a bit, stretching and yawning. “Oh come one, the movie wasn’t that bad. I for one thought the killer’s motive was genuine and realistic.” Devin said, matter-of-factly, pretending he was actually paying attention and not admiring the older boy at all.
“Mhm. I suppose. But the protagonist’s thinking was backwards. Who even decides to hide under the bed? That’s the first place anyone would look.” He muttered, putting Devin’s legs aside as he stood up, walking to the kitchen. Devin sat up in curiosity, wondering what the boy was gonna get from his kitchen. He shrugged it off as he followed him in the kitchen, continuing to talk.
“Yeah but where else was she supposed to go? The closet? C’mon, even you have to admit that’ll be too obvious.” Devin soon smiled widely as he saw Ennui’s lips twitch a bit, freezing up a bit. That obviously meant that he got through to him. Score. “Well. Um-” He paused, not knowing how to continue the conversation. “It doesn’t matter. The movie was boring anyways. I watched it like 100 times.” He muttered, trying to find something to eat, just so he could get his mind off of that terrible excuse of a movie.
This made Devin smile widely as he blushed a bit, knowing he totally out bested the goth boy in his own game. It was truly an honor. “I could order a pizza or something if you’re hungry.” He offered, sitting on the countertop, watching Ennui rummage through his pantry. He didn’t mind, his house was his house by default, since he comes over almost everyday.
Ennui shrugged, crossing his arms. “You don’t have to do that for me.” He responded, not making eye contact with the emo. Something about being around him made him feel….different. Not that it mattered though, as he wasn’t the one to act on feelings. Devin, however, was. “No, no, I want to. Besides, I’m sort of hungry too, so it’ll be a win win.”
Ennui decided to eventually give in, since he knew that his friend would go on and on about how it wasn’t a big deal or anything. And yeah, he’d be right about that….after all, it’s just a pizza between friends. It’s not like it mattered in the long run, right?
It actually did though. The fact of the matter was that Devin did this all of the time, and not just towards him. Ennui would still recall the amount of times that he would tell him to not spend all of his money in one place, especially if it was for other people. But Devin would excuse it saying “Oh, it’s just for my girlfriend Shelly,” or “It’s only for Carrie, calm down.” and occasionally “I’m buying it for you man, consider it a token of my gratitude for being with me most of the time.”
And ever since Shelly broke up with him for her tennis coach (ouch), the two have been spending a lot of time together, and honestly, Ennui wasn’t complaining in the slightest. He liked spending time with Devin, even if he was a bit energetic and loud at times. He also loved getting gifts from him. Like, how many people can you name that can genuinely get their hands on The Cure vinyl signed, much less give it to you? No matter how corny it sounded, Ennui actually liked Devin. And that was saying something, cause he didn’t really like-like a lot of people in that sense.
So while they were eating, he listened to Devin’s little rant about what was going on in school, and it honestly made him smile. How he’d trip over his words, did little hand motions, hell even his voice made him smile. But Devin didn’t have to know the way he felt about him. Not now at least. He could keep this nice feeling to himself for a while.
“Then the teacher flipped out, yelled at all of us, and then left the room in pure anger! Funniest thing that’s happened in Biology!” Devin laughed, waiting for his friend’s reaction to his amazing story. Ennui blinked before shaking his head and giving a small smile. “Yeah, but I understand the frustrations of being a teacher. Like, imagine getting paid less than 100k per year, yet teaching the future adults who have to run society.” He responded, taking a sip of his diet soda. Devin paused as his eyes widened. “Wow Ennui, that was so ...deep.” He blushed, being in awe at the teen’s maturity.
“I know.” The goth said simply, shrugging his shoulders. The truth was he was actually flattered by Devin’s compliment, but he decided to act aloof about it. Which was another thing that the emo loved about Ennui, how he acted so unbothered about everything, when in reality, Devin could tell when stuff would get to him. “No, I'm serious.” Devin responded, putting a hand on his shoulder. “You’re always so deep and poetic, which is what I like about you. You’re also very handsome and smart. Heck, you’re even funny sometimes. I’m surprised that you aren’t dating anyone currently.”
Ennui quietly preened at all of the compliments, his face turning a bit red despite his pale white makeup covering his face. “You really think so?” He asked, a small smile on his face. Devin smiled back as he pulled him closer by the arms. “Of course I do. You’re my best friend. Well….best guy friend…” He winced, forgetting entirely about Carrie. But could you blame him? He was too infatuated by the goth in front of him. “Really now? What else do you like about me?” Asked the goth boy, raising an eyebrow.
“Oh where do I begin!?” Devin exclaimed enthusiastically, letting go of Ennui and counting the list on his fingers. “Your skin is super soft and smooth, with and without makeup. Speaking of you without makeup, your looks are still stunning, even if you don’t like yourself without it. You have a precious smile, and I say that because it’s super rare to see you happy, but when I do it’s super adorable. Your voice is also super attractive, and I’m not just saying that to be nice. You can totally be a voice actor or something. Oh, and also-”
Devin continued to ramble on and on as Ennui looked at him in awe. How can someone so amazing see so much in someone as terrible as himself? The compliments were too much for him to handle as he started to awkwardly squirm in his seat. It’s not like he disliked or felt uncomfortable with the feeling or anything, but he didn't really know what to do with all of this…joy? Love…? That’s what he believed it was at least.
“Oh! And also….” The emo paused as he watched the goth shaking in his seat, uncontrollably. He frowned a bit, putting his hand on his leg. “Are you okay? I didn’t say anything wrong, did I?” He asked. Ennui calmly moved Devin’s hand from his lap to his own hands. “I’m alright. B-but I do have a question.” He asked, still jittery from all of the affection he received in a short amount of time. From the touching to the compliments, Ennui couldn’t think straight at all.
“Yeah, of course man.” Devin said simply, pulling his hands back. He forgot how much Ennui couldn’t stand people touching him, maybe he’d talk about boundaries again. The goth did have a thing for personal space and all. “If it’s about the personal space thing, it’s my bad honestly. I should totally start learning how to keep my hands to myself-”
“It’s about the opposite of that, actually.” Ennui interrupted, leaving Devin speechless in the process. “I…actually want to be around you more. I want you to hug me when you feel happy. I want you to talk about your day to me. I-I don’t know how I’m supposed to feel, but I want to feel something with you.” The emo was still shocked about what he was saying. Did Ennui actually want a relationship? With him out of all people. Like, Devin wasn’t complaining in the slightest, but really? Him?
“I can totally understand if you don’t want that though. I’m a depressive, cold hearted, uncaring-” Devin quickly kissed Ennui’s cheek, making him silent. “Yeah, maybe you are a bit depressive, and hell maybe you are cold-hearted…but I wouldn’t go as far as saying you’re uncaring. In fact, between you and me, you might have the biggest heart I’ve ever seen. The fact that you’re confessing to me tells me all I need to know.” He smiles nervously, blushing a bit. “If anything, I didn’t even think you liked guys.” He laughed a little.
Ennui glared at him out of disbelief. “Well…I guess that sort of makes sense….considering my previous relationship.” He muttered, putting a hand over the place that Devin kissed. “I kind of took a guess with you though. I mean, you had to be either queer or blind considering you have a gorgeous girl best friend who has the hugest crush on you.”
Devin shrugged, smiling. “I guess. I really like Carrie, but I feel like I should test the waters first before making a choice for life, y’know. I’ve never dated a guy before.” He said truthfully. Ennui raised an eyebrow. “Oh, so I’m just an experiment for you to use temporarily.” He said blankly, even though he was joking around and only wanted to fuck with Devin a bit. Said boy started to stutter up an excuse as he watched amused.
“I-I didn’t mean it like that! I-I-I’m not trying to use you at all! I-its just that I never dated a boy before and-” Ennui rolled his eyes before giving the boy a small peck on the lips, shutting him up. “Devin, I was joking. It’s honestly fine. I’ve dated other people in the past that just needed to “test the waters” too. You’re fine.” He reassured, patting his back. Devin shook his head and pulled Ennui in close. “I don’t want to be like those other people though. I genuinely want to make this work with you. If it doesn’t work out in the end, it’s whatever. But I want it to last.”
Ennui sighed as he gave Devin a small smile. “You really think you can handle me?” He asked, raising an eyebrow. Devin smiled and nodded quickly. “I know I can. Just give me one chance.” He pleaded, closing both of his eyes and praying for an answer. The goth shook his head before taking Devin’s hands. “Alright then. We’ll start dating.” He said simply, smiling just enough for the boy to see. The emo started to become giddy as he quickly hugged the goth, leaving kisses all over his face. “Thank you! Thank you so much! You won't regret this, I promise!”
The rest of the day went by in a flash, with the two holding hands and chatting non-stop. Nothing changed, really. But they felt the spark of a new relationship growing between them.
