Celebrity secret relationships
Is anybody else curious how such high-profile individuals get to have personal lives and relationships with nobody snitching or paparazzi sniping them? Obviously, there are a lot of celebrities who are upfront about who they date but don’t show off their relationship in front of the fans, but what about those whose partners we don’t know at all? Isn’t it hard to hide from the public? I’m just so curious lol because I couldn’t manage to hide my boyfriend’s existence from my ex of five years ago, and I obviously don’t even talk to the guy. How do they manage it?

I mean, if you think about it statistically, there’s gotta be a significant proportion of celebs who are in gay relationships and can’t let the media know for obvious reasons. And we don’t know about those relationships, which have to exist, but it must not be easy. I assume that it just entails not being able to go out or having to put on disguises for a nice night out. A lot of them probably also have the funds to fly to a country where they’re less likely to be recognized, too

“Don’t you think that posting as if we’re still in the Bahamas if we’re back in Canada is dishonest?” Shane asks, squinting at the bright picture on his screen of Ilya’s Instagram story with its bleach-white sand and turquoise waves and their entwined hands just in frame. He frowns. “Do you ever worry about, like, integrity?”
Ilya looks at him as if he’s being absurd, his lips parted and his eyebrows furrowed. “Is an Instagram story, Shane. Nobody is real on Instagram. That is the whole point of it. And maybe if I had posted that we were in the Bahamas when we were, some crazy person would have stalked us down.”
“And you don’t think crazy people aren’t currently dissecting the picture you posted to see if my hand matches with anybody else you’ve been seen in public with for the past ten years?” Shane puts his phone down. He’s not really one for Instagram anyway, as Ilya said. That’s all Ilya’s job as a model. And it pays for the vacations and the private cabanas, so it’s not as if Shane can really complain, can he?
“They can amuse themselves with that if they are,” Ilya says. “They will not find anything.” He props himself back on his hands against the mattress, where he’s currently sprawled out on their bed in their house in Montreal. He studies Shane propped up against the headboard and two pillows with his blue eyes, gaze wandering all over the length of his body.
Shane flushes, instinctively bringing his knees to his chest under the spark of his stare. He’d been reading a book until he’d remembered to check Ilya’s social media accounts, just because he likes to support him even in the form of one like, and so has his glasses on that Ilya likes so much. When he begins to pull them off, though, Ilya lurches over to stop him, his hand encircling his wrist and his face suddenly so close that Shane can feel his breath mist over his jaw.
“Keep those on,” he murmurs, nodding to the glasses. The other hand not on his arm comes to rest on Shane’s other side, trapping him in between Ilya’s large torso. There’s that mole on his cheek that Shane loves so much, the little bit of stubble left over from their flight back to Canada when Ilya had elected not to shave to save time. His gaze flicks to Shane’s phone face-down on the bed beside them. “I posted another story just for you, so you need to look at it closely. Aren’t you going to check?”
Shane holds out for two seconds before grumbling and patting the bed for his phone, feeling slow and awkward with Ilya so close to him. He’ll never get used to it, maybe. How it feels to be loved by him.
There’s a green circle around Ilya’s account, and when Shane clicks it, it takes him to a second story he hadn’t viewed, which takes a few seconds to load. When it does, he yelps, almost dropping his phone—Ilya’s post is a selfie of him in the bathroom, in makeup and attire that Shane recognizes to be from the GQ shoot. Meaning he’s topless. And gripping himself inside of his pants, though Shane can’t tell for sure because the photo cuts off right above his crotch, but not high enough that he doesn’t know what’s going on.
“You posted that where everybody can see?!” Shane nearly shouts, sliding the phone a few feet away from him on the bed. “What were you thinking—”
Ilya cups one hand over Shane’s mouth, looking bored. “No, Shane, is only for you. Is called a ‘close friends’ story, yes? Only you are on it. Do you not think we are close friends?”
Shane glares at him. He can’t speak when Ilya is practically smothering him, so he doesn’t even try.
“That’s what I thought,” Ilya croons, slowly dragging his other hand down Shane’s chest. “Do you want to know what I was thinking of when I took that picture? What I was thinking of doing to you?”
Shane does want to know. Lucky for him, Ilya is ready to tell him.

In the past, Shane was pretty averse to showing up in public with Ilya, but they’ve since learned that they can usually get by as long as Ilya wears a ridiculously oversized pair of sunglasses and a beanie. Even if he is recognized, people usually don’t look twice at Shane. Ilya likes to say that it’s because Shane is actually his assistant. Once, somebody thought he was an employee at the 7-Eleven they were at, which was confusing because he wasn’t even wearing anything reminiscent of the workers’ outfit.
At least it means they can do mundane things like grocery shopping together. Shane had assumed that Ilya would prefer to get his groceries delivered, but Ilya surprisingly gets a kick out of wandering the aisles, slowly pushing his cart and peering at every label like a grandmother.
Shane walks beside the cart, his hands shoved in his pockets. He sneaks a glance to the side. The awful fluorescent lighting doesn’t even make Ilya look washed out, which is unfair. He looks as beautiful as ever. Shane probably looks ghastly himself, and Ilya is too kind to point it out.
“What do you think, Ilya?” Shane says, dragging a finger between the line of cans before him, their aluminum tops glistening in the artificial light. “Should we get canned tuna caught from the Pacific Ocean or the Indian Ocean?”
“It does not matter. It is all water. Did you know that there are rumors going around that I am dating Rose Landry?” Ilya says. He actually barks a laugh out at that. “Because of that party we went to two nights ago. Somebody there blabbed. Famous people are good for nothing.”
Shane looks up at him, placing both cans of tuna in the cart because he couldn’t decide. “I mean, you tell them that you have a boyfriend, right?” he says awkwardly. “It’s a pretty well-known fact about you. There can’t be that many people who believe it.” A thought strikes him. “Oh god, nobody mentioned me, right? There were no pictures taken?”
Ilya snorts. “They only mentioned another guy who seemed especially close to Rose Landry. Should I be jealous? I think I should be. Shane, are you dating Rose Landry?”
“Ilya, I’m gay,” Shane hisses, his eyes darting around as he shoves one elbow into a laughing Ilya’s stomach. “And I’m dating you, so I don’t see the point in the question.”
An ambivalent shrug. “Had to make sure. The media is so convinced, you see. I swear, I tell them how much I love you, that I would and have turned over the world for you, and still they do not believe. Hmph.”
Shane whips his head, frantically scanning their surroundings for any phone cameras or eavesdropping people, but there’s only an elderly lady at the far end of the aisle and a worker doing inventory in the produce section. “You can’t say those things out here,” he says, glaring up at Ilya. It is so like him to say such things in a grocery store. “You don’t know who’s listening.”
“You are,” Ilya says simply, dropping the cart to cup Shane’s face in his hands, which he gives a long, considering look before he drops a kiss on his nose. “And that is all that matters, yes?”
This fucking guy. “I guess,” he says, trying with all his effort not to blush. It’s so much more obvious on his face because of the freckles. “I love you too.”
“I hope so.” Ilya drops his face, giving him one more soft pat on the cheek before turning back to the cart. “I have that shoot in Los Angeles next weekend. You want to come?”
“Will anybody think anything of it if I do?” Shane asks, caught off guard.
Ilya shrugs, mouth curving down. “I do not think so. And if they do, who cares? I can just tell them you are my assistant. You assist me with my erections.”
“Ilya,” Shane says reprimandingly.
Ilya glances back at him, his gaze soft. “So what if they ask? I find myself caring less. I do not care so much about what they think of how I love you than I care about how it makes you feel. So, you will come to Los Angeles?”
Shane stares up at his boyfriend, and then he shakes his head in disbelief. Despite himself, though, and despite all the logical arguments that stack up against Ilya’s much shakier premises, the thought grows warm and comfortable in his chest. Maybe they do deserve to take more risks. “I’ll come if you start responding to me on Instagram instead of just ignoring me.”
Ilya considers it. “It was so I would not bring attention to you. But, fine. It is a deal.”

“You’re sure that nobody is going to think it’s weird that some guy is coming with you to a shoot for Louis Vuitton?” Shane asks Ilya in the back of their car, where they’re being driven to the east side of Los Angeles. He’s uncomfortable, shifting against the sleek leather seats and wondering whether the screen between the driver and the passengers is actually soundproof or not.
Ilya shoots him a look. He looks good, even plain as he is—all the makeup and ruffling comes before the shoot, he’d said, so he’d only done his skincare before they’d left. “You are not some guy, Shane. You are my lover.”
“I thought I told you to stop calling me that,” Shane says, looking to the side and knocking his knee against the seat in a sort of embarrassed gesture. “It sounds so intense.”
Ilya regards him for a long moment; he can feel it even when he’s not looking at him. “Is it not?” Hauling one arm over, he fits one hand behind Shane’s neck and squeezes him at the base of his scalp. “If you are so worried, I can tell them you are my assistant. Will you hold my coffee?”
“I don’t want you to say that, either,” Shane says, irritated. “That’s… it makes it sound like I’m nothing to you.”
There’s a beat of silence, and when Shane leans his head against the window, he sees Ilya staring at him in the reflection in the glass, unmoving. He sees him bring his other hand up as if to cup his face and then let it drop.
“Shane,” says Ilya.
Shane turns to the side, donning a tired smile. “It’s nothing serious, or your fault.”
“I know that, but Shane,” Ilya says. Shane never knows where to look when Ilya is looking at him like that, his blue eyes so sharp and yet gentle where they graze against Shane’s skin. “I would tell all of the photographers in there. I would tell the entire fucking world. You are everything to me. I don’t care about them. I would if you told me to. Do you want me to?”
Caught, Shane gives a small shake of his head. It’s a conversation they’ve rehashed many times over the years, and yet as willing as Ilya is to go ahead and uncover the secret shrouding their relationship, it’s always Shane who is the most hesitant. Something in Ilya’s eyes dims.
Shane doesn’t know how he would handle it if everybody knew who he was dating—he still has friends who ask when he’s going to get a wife and kids, and they have no idea. What’s more, he worries that it’ll ruin Ilya’s career if he comes out with it entirely. With Ilya’s boyfriend remaining faceless and nameless, it’s easy for some people to turn their eyes away from his sexuality, but Shane being there wholly leaves them completely exposed in a way that people can’t ignore.
Shane wants to tell people, too. He wants to marry Ilya and see the pictures posted on his Instagram. But he’s scared.
Less scared than he once was five years ago, but still scared.
“It’s a lot,” Shane says.
“I know,” says Ilya. That’s all he says, and it makes Shane wonder if he’s the only one between them who kind of wants to keep it a secret.
They pull up to the outside of the shooting location before he can pursue the thought any further. “You can tell them I’m your special friend if they ask,” Shane says.
That gets a hint of a smirk out of Ilya, which soothes something inside of him. “Special friend? That is basically like telling them we fuck. It would be less subtle if we got out of the car with our pants unbuttoned and our hair messy.”
“I hope that didn’t give you any ideas.”
“Ah, a brief one, but we can do that on the way back.”
They’ve exited the car by now and are standing just outside the building, which has an inconspicuous white-bricked exterior and an all black door set just above a short set of stairs. Shane and Ilya stare at each other, just smiling at each other.
“They won’t say anything,” Ilya says gently. “They’re not allowed to.”
“I know, uh, I—” Shane shakes his head a little to clear his head, looking down at his feet. “You can tell them.”
“That you are my special friend?”
“That I’m your boyfriend.” Shane looks him squarely in the eye, feeling a little more confident in his decision when he sees the way Ilya’s mouth parts in surprise. “You’re right, they can’t tell anybody. And we can’t keep it a secret forever, right? Not absolutely. So, we might as well let some people know, if they’re locked behind NDA’s, ‘cause fuck, I want people to know too, you know? How much we love each other.”
The last part comes out in a whisper. Ilya stands motionless for a second long enough for Shane to already mentally backtrack, but he suddenly reaches out and tugs Shane into him, their bodies crashing into each other at a magnitude that isn’t severe enough to encapsulate their feelings for each other but is still enough to make Shane shiver. Contrary to the swift motion, the kiss that Ilya places on his forehead is anything but forceful, instead so soft that Shane closes his eyes involuntarily and sucks a breath in between his teeth.
“Okay, I will,” Ilya says. They part, and he gives him a roguish grin. “Make sure to pay attention to me looking sexy, yes?”
Shane rolls his eyes. “Whatever you want.”

The story behind Shane and Ilya falling in love isn’t the most conventional one. Well, it never could have been, considering Ilya’s occupation as a celebrity model.
Shane, on the other hand, was probably as normal as normal could get. Or boring, as Ilya liked to call it. He lived a relatively typical life growing up in Ottawa, played recreational hockey all throughout high school, and then went to university to study sports medicine. At the end of it, he came out with a degree in nutrition and became a dietitian for athletes. He liked his work, and he was good at it. Occasionally, he worked with clients other than athletes, like actors who had to bulk up or slim down for films, but that was about it.
On one normal Tuesday evening, he got a call from a modeling agency asking if he would be interested in working with one of their models. His name is Ilya Rozanov, they said. He will be in Montreal for the next few months, and we would like to hire you until then.
Sure, he said. Why not? It was a change of pace from his usual work, and he’s heard of the guy, so it would be neat to say that he had him as a client some years in the future if it happened to come up in conversation. Plus, he’s already pretty good-looking, so it’s not as if Shane will have to work very hard.
Ilya Rozanov was nothing like Shane expected. A bit of an asshole, honestly. A lot of an asshole. He was just so damn good at his job—meaning, he was fucking hot—and that excused a lot of his behavior. And for some reason, he took a liking to Shane, or at least a strange sort of interest, even though he did not listen to his nutrition advice in the slightest. Shane had once tried to get him to stop eating entire packs of Oreos in one go while watching television, and Ilya had only stared at him, asking him what he would get if he listened to Shane. When he hadn’t been able to provide an answer other than better health? Ilya had only scoffed and dismissed him with a wave. What else could he possibly want?
It only took five evenings of Ilya requesting that Shane personally come to his penthouse to cook a dietitian-approved dinner for him to realize that company and a home-cooked meal weren’t all he wanted. It only took Shane three of those five evenings to discover that maybe he liked men a little more than he liked women, and the remaining two to notice that Ilya wasn’t the straightest, either. By the sixth time, Ilya abandoned dinner altogether, forgoing food to straddle Shane against the kitchen counter and kiss him until his head spun. And then he fucked him, and Shane knew that neither of them was particularly interested in friendship.
It only spiraled from there. At least once a week, Ilya would request his work as a “private chef,” which wasn’t even accurate since Shane was only there to suggest a damn meal plan, and then Ilya wouldn’t even follow it to begin with. Shane told his friends that he was working with a particularly difficult client.
It was true. Ilya was difficult. If Shane tried to get anywhere near the stove, he would sneak one hand up his shirt and the other down his pants before taking him to his bedroom, after which he would get on the phone and order in pizza as if he hadn’t just fucked his dietician. Seriously. The nerve of this guy!
By the end of the four months for which Shane was hired, he and Ilya had met so many times that it was strange to see him leave for Boston, where he was based. They kept texting. Ilya sent him relentless photos of his greasy takeout to tease him. One week, Shane had to head into Boston for a conference, and he and Ilya fucked every night that his schedule would allow. Ilya had a few projects in Montreal over the next couple of years, which he always denied having chosen because Shane was there.
Eventually, Ilya bought a penthouse in Montreal, which he insisted was a business maneuver because “that part of Canada did not have enough fun, rich, hot guys,” and he had “plenty of contracts to choose from,” and then he invited Shane over again. Eventually, Shane came to hate the two hour drive from Ottowa to Montreal. Eventually, it occurred to Shane that he never had to leave after he realized Ilya bought two sets of towels and set up Shane’s toothbrush just beside his own in the bathroom, that he could navigate Ilya’s kitchen in his sleep, that he had forgotten enough clothes in Ilya’s penthouse that Shane had started his own little section in the walk-in closet. Eventually, Ilya asked him point-blank not to leave.
So Shane didn’t. They’ve been living together ever since. Soon after he moved in, Ilya began telling the press that he was in a committed relationship. A few months after that, he came out as bisexual, which both garnered negative attention and shot his popularity up thrice as high as it had been.
Neither of them meant for it to become a secret. As a model, Ilya wasn’t getting the kind of media attention that an actor or artist might have, but from time to time, pictures of him running errands in the city would surface, and rumors of him dating so-and-so would float their way into their consciousness before dissipating quietly. It wasn’t private, what they had. Ilya was very comfortable showing his life to the public and had been for years.
Sometimes, Shane wished he was the same.

Nights are somehow the most peaceful times of the day for the two of them, as long as they’re far from the bars and clubs of the city and instead wandering the streets alone in the dim lamplight. The puddles of yellow, flickering fluorescence afford them a different kind of privacy as they side step the round circles of light to escape into the shade, dancing around potholes in a dusky waltz. With one breath, Shane pulls Ilya into the light by the hand just long enough to see the way his face beams underneath the glow, laughter making a fool of the both of them, and then he tugs him into the nearest 7-Eleven, ducking into the artificial white brightness.
There isn’t anybody else inside the store besides them and a tired-looking cashier who doesn’t look up when the bell rings, a girl who looks to be in high school manning the register. Overhead, the speakers quietly play the Top 30 radio, but the loudest noise in the store is the insistent buzzing of the freezer section.
“I want a beer,” Ilya tells Shane, taking him past an aisle of colorful plastic packaged chip bags and a cardboard stand of Snoopy-themed gummy candies. In the corner, a poster of the Montreal Metros peels at the edge.
Shane wrinkles his nose. “A beer? You can’t get anything better? How about one of those Korean probiotic yogurt drinks? We just passed a grocery store.”
“Beer versus yogurt, Shane.” The withering look that Ilya shoots him is highly exaggerated. “Which one sounds more appealing at ten at night, hmm?”
Shane huffs, crossing his arms and leaning against the cold frosted door of the drink section on one foot, narrowing his eyes at Ilya. “You have a shoot this weekend. How about after?”
“I always have a shoot, Shane, I am a busy guy. How about a Coke?”
“Not much better.”
“Diet?”
“Aspartame has conflicting study results.”
Ilya pops open the refrigerator door, staring at Shane through the slightly fogged glass. “Then I might as well get the beer. You’re no longer my dietician, just my lover.”
On instinct, Shane glances to the far end of the store, but the cashier doesn’t seem to have heard, nor does she seem to have looked up from her phone since before they entered the store. “Don’t call me that,” he says, a little flustered.
“Why?” The question mists the glass where Ilya’s face appears through the sheen, making his expression a little hard to read. “There is nobody else here but someone being paid minimum wage to stand in the corner.”
“Not because of that,” Shane says. “Because it’s gross, Ilya.”
Ilya laughs, creating another puff of steam, but when it clears Shane can see that he’s smiling broadly at him. He can’t help but grin back, softened by the stupidity of talking through a glass door near midnight out in the city, practically alone. It feels like falling in love with him all over again.
“What? Is true. What else would I call you?” Swiftly, Ilya ducks around the edge of the door to plant a kiss on Shane’s cheek, his lips a little cold from the freezer. They’re letting out all the refrigeration, but Shane doesn’t have it in him to reprimand him for it. He doesn’t have anything in him at all, not with what he’s about to say sitting heavy in his pocket.
“I guess I don’t know. Pick your beer, Ilya.”
Humming, Ilya gives him a smirking glance before turning away, finally, to peruse the selection of gleaming cans before him, tapping one finger against each before he finally selects one in the far left. When he turns, letting the glass door swing shut, he turns to see Shane on one knee. The can clatters to the ground, tumbling with a stark metallic clang until it hits the wall.
“Fiance,” Shane says, barely able to get his voice above a whisper. “You can call me your fiancé. Will you marry me, Ilya?”
“Shane,” Ilya says, all in a rush, trembling hands reaching out to grasp onto him. Shane likes that, that his first instinct is to stretch to meet him. “Shane, my god, yes, of course. When did you get that ring?”
Ilya’s fingers are still a little wet from the condensation, but Shane doesn’t mind it when they leave streaks across his face, Ilya mechanically drawing his hands around his neck as he lurches out of the kneel.
“Here, I need your hand,” Shane laughs, gently extricating Ilya’s left arm to slide the ring onto his fourth finger. Ilya’s face looks carved out of wonder, sculpted down to the angle of reverence. He’s looking at the ring, and Shane is looking at Ilya. “I got it a while ago, actually, I just needed a bit of bravery to get it out—”
He’s unable to get any more words out when Ilya kisses him, urgent and a little bit desperate, so hard that he has to take a step back so they don’t fall over into the snack aisle. Ilya is clutching onto him like there’s nothing else in the world to hold onto. Or maybe there is nothing else he’d rather grasp than Shane.
As soon as Ilya parts, Shane’s eyes fly open, unwilling to miss even a second of the expression on the other’s face. “I will marry you, Shane,” Ilya says raggedly, “and we will be husbands. I have never loved anybody as I love you.”
“I’m the one who proposed, so that makes me the one to marry you,” Shane teases. He’s still shaking a little bit. It’s only that Ilya can’t see it since his hands are around his waist, but maybe he can see it in his face, because his eyes soften when they look at Shane, like they usually do.
“Fine, we will marry each other,” Ilya says. He has one hand clutching the back of Shane’s head, his thumb moving in small circles against the nape of his neck. He smiles an impossible smile, one that would shatter any camera that attempted to capture it.
“I’m looking forward to it,” says Shane quietly.
Suddenly, Ilya tenses, pulling Shane into his chest and looking swiftly to the side. “There is nobody here? Do you think that girl—”
Shane takes a deep breath and looks up at Ilya. “You’re willing to tell the world, right?”
Ilya’s eyes flash. “Yes. Always. But if you are not ready—”
“I am.” Shane reaches over to take the hand with the ring finger on it, admiring the way the sleek silver band sits against his skin. From there, he dances his hands along Ilya’s torso all the way back down to his hips, where he firmly holds him against his body. “It’s been so many years, and I will have so many years to love you, but we’ve already wasted enough of them being quiet about our relationship. I don’t want my loving you to be the biggest secret of my life anymore. I want everybody to know what a joy it is.”
“They will,” Ilya says, dropping a kiss along his jawline, and then another on his chin, and then one more firmly on his lips. “Everybody will know. I will be very annoying about it.”
“Not too difficult for you, then,” Shane says, and then he can’t help but laugh when Ilya growls against his lips, kissing him again and again.

[A two-minute long street interview of Ilya Rozanov, which focuses primarily on his face with a small camera in the corner of the screen. The off-screen interviewer says, “Tell me about the person you love most in the world.” Ilya, caught off guard, briefly breaks into a smile before wiping one hand over his jaw, gaze fixed somewhere below the camera as he thinks. The small smile remains.
“He is,” Ilya begins before letting out a short laugh, “boring, to begin with. That is the first thing people must know about him. He is so boring! I mean, he reads these histories of Dior and whatever because of who I shoot with, and he does yoga on the balcony at six in the morning, much too early to do anything, and he makes me these gross juices with, uh, vegetables and whatever. And I tell him, no, this is gross! Is yucky! And he says it is good for me, so I have to. Says it is why my skin is glowing in my Hermes shoot, because he force fed me one kilogram of kale. Is ridiculous! He is ridiculous! I glow because I am beautiful.
“He does not like parties or the club or whatnot. Whatever. I stop going and I stay in with him, and he wants to watch movies about the ocean. The ocean? Where does he get these things? So I take him to the, eh, what do you call the place with the fish—”
“Aquarium.”
“Yes, that. I take him and he is so, so happy because of these tiny fucking fish. And I look at him and I say to him, ‘Why do you care about fish so much when I am right here? I am fucking catch, right?’ And he tells me, ‘I like it so much because I’m here with you.’”
Ilya stops for a moment, looking to the side. The camera remains steady. Around him, a steady stream of people walk past the two standing in the middle of the sidewalk, oblivious to what is being confessed. “I did not know what to say. I still do not, even. I cannot tell you enough to make up for him not being here with me, because even saying this to you makes me miss him. He is so boring and I do not care. He is so boring and I would sit in front of a tank of fucking water with him for the rest of my life if I could not have him otherwise.
“Nothing else matters. Fuck all of them, I say! Because I love him. I have loved him loudly, for many years, even if for many of them I could not tell anyone his name. I am saying it now. I am not sorry. I will not have the world if the world will not have him. I love you, Shane Hollander.”
Ilya stares right into the camera as he speaks the last words, his eyes open and honest, his mouth curving gently around Shane’s name. His face lifts. He looks like a man in love.
The screen fades to black.]
“Because I love him.”
