“But what if I fall?” “But oh my darling, what if you fly?”

Summary:

“It’s just… you’ve done more for me in the past few hours than the heroes have in my entire life. If I were to side with someone it-” he pauses, trailing off again.
“Careful, I think you were about to call me a friend.”

Chapter 1: The New Loser On The Block

Summary:

A new kid shows up and befriends the school’s punching bag

Chapter Text

Sora’s pov
It wasn’t a feeling she'd had in a while, being the new kid. She hadn’t been to school in so long she almost forgot what it felt like to walk into one.

“Class, I would like you to meet the new student, introduce yourself.”

The entire class turns to her and she feels the nerves nagging at her brain. “Hi, my name’s Sora Leila.”

The teacher looks down at a clipboard. “Your seat is next to… Midoriya,” the teacher points his pen over at a green haired kid in the middle of the class. A few people laugh while others whisper.

“Good to know both of the losers are going to sit by each other,” a blond with spiked hair yells for the entire class to hear. Most of the class snickers and his friends laugh. What was his deal? He didn’t even know her besides her name. She rolls her eyes, she was fine with being a loser, it meant people would leave her alone.

Lunch was packed as she supposed it normally was. Well, it was either sit with some randos or eat in the hall. The latter starts to sound better but then her eyes land on a patch of green hair. She walks over before she can convince herself otherwise.

“Hey umm,” she says when she makes it over to the table. “Can I sit here?”

He looks up at her, almost at a loss for words. “Y-yeah, of course.” She smiles and sits next to him. “You’re Leila right? The new kid in my class?”

“Yup but you can call me Sora,” she doesn’t like people using her last name and thankfully, he nods. “And you’re Midoriya?”

“Yeah, I’m sorry about my friend this morning, he can be like that sometimes.”

“Friend?” she asks. The only kid that talked the whole class was the blond guy, that couldn’t be the guy he was talking about, right? “Didn’t he call both of us losers though?”

“He isn’t always like that-”

“Aw look, the losers are eating lunch together!” It wasn’t the blond kid but it was one of his minions. Half of the lunch got quiet and stared at them. The guy walks up to the table and looks at him. “Looks like you might not be useless after all!” He pauses and looks at both of them. “I mean the two of you would make excellent clowns for a circus.” The crowd of guys that had gathered around him started laughing. Thankfully they walked away and wasted breath somewhere else.

“So you were saying?” She looks over at him, eyebrow raised slightly. He just hung his head.

“Sorry about that. You probably shouldn’t sit here if you don’t want to get made fun of.” He says, staring at his food.

“I don’t care, I wasn’t exactly planning on becoming popular,” she nudges him on the shoulder. She wanted to ask about the useless comment but she wasn’t about to dig too deep after just knowing him. They ate the rest of their lunch in silence. Well, Sora did at least. Not that she necessarily cared but the kid could never stay quiet for too long, always muttering something or other under his breath.

Crap where was it?
She digs through her bag. She could have sworn she put it in her bag. But I suppose, the last place I would have left it…
She walks back to home room, the last place her folder would have been.

“Just pray you'll be born with a quirk in your next life, and take a swan-dive off the roof of the building.”

She presses her back against the wall. It was that same cocky voice she already hated. Three people walk out of the room and out the front door. Once the door shut behind them she opens the door to class. Midoriya was on the floor, tears in his eyes.
She rushes over to him, dropping beside him on the floor. “Oh my gosh, are you ok?” She wasn’t used to comforting people, it wasn’t exactly her strong suit.

He finally looks at her and wipes his cheeks as if it can erase the fact that she had eyes. “I-I’m fine,” he lies, his voice scratchy. She wants to disagree, tell him to explain why a person he calls a friend says something like that. Realization hits as all the stares and whispered comments make sense. He was quirkless.

She didn’t care of course, it was a stupid thing to hate someone over. She knew he didn’t want to talk but she didn’t want to leave him by himself either, depending on his mental state, that comment could take him over the edge, literally.

“Um, do you maybe wanna hang out at mine tonight?” She stands up and offers out a hand which he takes. “My parents work late shifts so it can get lonely late at night.” It wasn’t exactly a lie, the apartment would get lonely.

“Would they care that I’m there, I don’t want to intrude and seem rude or-“

“Trust me,” she interrupts before he can finish, “they won’t care.” He doesn’t look convinced, but she doesn’t care, as long as he agrees.

Midoriya’s pov
They had started walking to her apartment after she had found him on the floor of a classroom. It was weird, he had only known Sora for a day and she was kinder than his best friend he’d known since forever. And that was before the altercation that had happened an hour ago. Maybe he was just having a bad day and didn’t really mean it, wouldn’t be the first time he took his anger out on Midoriya.

“You’re spiraling again.” Her voice snaps him out of his own head. Could she really tell what I was thinking? I mean I never did ask her about her quirk. Maybe she has a mind reading quirk? Before he can stop himself he blurts out, “what’s your quirk?”

She stops and looks at him and he immediately tries to backtrack. “I mean, sorry, I was just wondering. You don’t have to say anything if you don’t want to. I tend to blurt things out before my brain has time to process the things I’m saying and-”

“Hey, woah slow down and take a breath. Geez, how much lung capacity do you have?” She huffs out a laugh and shakes her head. “And stop apologizing for everything, you don’t need to apologize for breathing.”

She said it so simply, like it was normal, expected even. It certainly wasn’t how most people thought to treat him. Ever since he was told he was quirkless everyone thought he wasn’t good enough. Even his mother, as much as he loved her, didn’t think he was capable.

“My quirk is 'force field'.” She starts and he immediately takes out his notebook and starts writing. It was nice to have someone he could analyze that wasn’t a hero. “I can make them into any shape I want. I have the ability to change the color too but it normally takes too much energy and isn’t worth the hassle. I can use it as a shield or to pick up objects but right now I can only hold about 100 pounds before I get too tired.” She looks over at him while he writes all of the information down. “Are you writing all of this down?” She asks.

He looks up from his notebook, “um yeah sorry I probably should have asked beforehand but I like analyzing people and their quirks.” He probably should have asked to see if it was ok that he wrote all of this stuff down but he couldn’t just pass up an opportunity for analyzing a new person’s quirk.

“Stop apologizing, it’s fine.” She peers over his shoulder, “who else do you have in here?”

“Oh um, mostly just heroes. I’ve always wanted to be one so it was my way of learning their tips and tricks so I could be great like them one day.” That seemed to make Sora quiet. A little weird but to be fair she wasn’t really a talker as he was coming to realize. What did catch his attention was when she had a falter in her step. “Are you ok?” He asks when she came to a full stop and she just shakes her head frantically and puts a finger to her lips. Before he has a chance to comprehend what’s happening Sora grabs him by the arm and puts up a shield, completely surrounding them.
