“Sorry,” Shane apologized right away, “I may have been a little paranoid because I don’t want the news to come out until we’re ready, but don't worry, it’s good news. Really good,” he couldn’t keep the smile off his face, “I proposed to Ilya. We’re engaged.”
Farah’s lips curved up into a smile, much in the same manner as when she first learned they were together. “Boys! That’s wonderful. I’m so happy for you.”
“Da! I am going to marry this boring, beautiful Canadian.” Through the screen, Farah saw Ilya quickly grab Shane’s face so he could plant a kiss on his cheek.
“We’re planning to get married in July – you’re invited of course – and we want to come out around that time as well, after the season’s finished. And we…”
“I wanted to show Scott Hunter how to really do big, grand romantic gesture,” Ilya interrupted, “but Shane thinks it’ll go better if we have a plan.”
“That’s where you come in.”
“Okay…okay. Give me a minute.” Farah clasped her hands in front of her. “We can announce your relationship in essentially one of two ways. We can hard launch it, let’s call that the Scott Hunter method, like ripping off a bandaid.”
“Let’s not do that.” Shane blurted out, unable to help himself, remembering the look on his dad’s face when he found out about him and Ilya.
“Or,” Farah continued, “The alternative is that we…soft launch. Slowly. Very slowly. Give people time to wrap their heads around the idea, so that by the time you guys announce your relationship, most people will be expecting it, or will have at least considered it.”
Ilya and Shane shared a look. “We’re okay with that.”
“Alright. The first step is being more active on social media. Especially you Shane. There’s some people who still don’t think you two are friends.”
“What? Really?”
“I haven’t done the full analytics, but if I had to estimate, I’d say fifty percent of hockey fans like the #Hollanov friendship, thirty percent think you’re still rivals and the friendship is all publicity for your charity–”
“They what?”
“–fifteen percent love either Ilya or Shane, but can’t stand the other and hate that you two are friends now–”
“Geez.”
“–and the remaining five percent hate that you’re friends because they ship Shayden.”
“Who?”
“Ah yes,” Ilya murmured, “Don’t worry about it kotenok.”
“So,” Farah continued, “I think you need to first convince everyone that you are close friends. I’d start by posting more about each other on your socials and documenting when you guys are together, which I’d imagine is more often than most people realize. Keep it in the realm of plausibly platonic deniability, but show people that you are in each other's lives and are important to one another. And then slowly ramp up from there.”
