Work Text:

The doctor and Charley were in the console room, Charley laying on the sofa and the doctor opposite her, sitting in his armchair reading a book with piping hot cups of tea set out on the small table between them. Only the soft hum of the TARDIS was audible. It has been quite a while since they could just rest and recharge, they didn't get much of an opportunity to do so, hopping from 23rd century Venice to a cult in America and then a time loop. The peace was unusual and thought a little unnerving, not unwelcome.

Charley grabbed a blanket from the pile next to the sofa, wrapped it around herself and turned over to lay on her side. Her eyes slowly scanned across the room. Charley's gaze lingered on the book the doctor was reading, trying to make out the title but it was so hard to focus on anything. The doctor's eyes were fixed on the pages. She'd never seen him so quite, usually he talked and talked and talked. She would've smiled at the thought but she was too tired to do even that. And as she lay there, in the safety and warmth of the TARDIS, Charley let sleep take over her.

The doctor was so invested in his book he didn't even notice. He's had it in his collection for a long time but never got around to reading it. Nowdays the doctor had as much time to read as Charley had to properly rest, which was very little. The doctor suddenly looked up enthusiasticaly, giving Charley a only quick glance before he spoke.

''Charley!'' He beamed, standing up and setting his book down on the table hurriedly. ''I think I know where we should go next! There is this planet-'' The doctor stopped talking when realized Charley had fallen asleep. He was, for a moment, worried that he might've woken her up but she didn't move a muscle. The doctor relaxed.

He walked over to the sofa and gently pulled the blanket over Charley so she wouldn't be cold. Not that she would've been, it was warm enough in the TARDIS, but the doctor figured that it wouldn't hurt to be cautious. He stared at Charley's sleeping figure for a moment with a small smile on his face. She looked so peacful. Better to let her sleep, he thought, carefully moving a strand of hair from her face. The doctor took a blanket from the pile and walked back to sit in his armchair. He layed it over his lap and reached for his book. He'd almost finished it but with only a few pages left, his heavy eyelids fell shut and not a moment later, he was fast asleep aswell.
