Work Text:
Emily stood beside JJ as they watched Will leave the precinct, she turned looking at the blonde.
“You want to just take the last of the paperwork to the hotel? You look pretty tired.“
She asked, her voice sounding a little exhausted after the long workday. JJ turned to face her, still looking at the door.
“Yes please!”
She whispered, it was so quiet that Emily barely caught it.
Emily nodded and went over to the desk they had been working at to grab the paperwork and their bags. All the while JJ just stood there staring at the door like she was calculating if there was still time to run after him.
Emily walked back over to JJ and put her hand on her shoulder, she looked down slightly, to look her in the eyes. Looking at her with a mix of understanding and pity. “Come on, let’s go” she says in a soft voice not completely unlike the one she uses with victims. JJ doesn’t even register the tone; she just nods and starts to walk out to the car. Emily follows silently, her hand still on JJ’s shoulder, guiding her to the car.
When they reached the car Emily opened the passenger door for JJ, once she was in Emily put all the stuff that she was still carrying in her hand into the backseat then she got into the driver seat. Then with one last look at JJ she started the car.
The ride to the hotel was short, only about five minutes, but it felt much longer. It was silent the entire time, the only sound being the wind from the open windows. Emily kept glancing at JJ trying to figure out what was going on in her head.

she had gone through something similar a few years ago, when she broke up with the guy she was dating at the time. If she was being honest with herself it was long overdue. She had tried to get herself to like him, she had, he was nice, held the door open for her, got her flowers, knew her favorite coffee order by heart.
But the night their relationship ended he had proposed to her. (The ring was simple but elegant, a pear shaped diamond on a thin gold band).Looking at him down on one knee with a ring in his hand she completely broke down, not able to keep up the facade anymore. She had started crying, which quickly turned into full buddy sobs, right there at the table in the middle of the restaurant. She couldn't even bring herself to care about all the people watching.
“I-I can't do this anymore”
She got out between sobs. Then she ran out of there, before remembering that he had picked her up for their date, so she just sat on the curb crying. When he came out after her, he looked like he was seconds away from crying. He was nice and offered to drive her home, which only made her feel worse. He had dropped her off at her apartment that night and after that she never saw him again.

When they arrived at the hotel Emily reached over with her hand to squeeze JJ’s shoulder, before getting out of the car and grabbing their stuff from the back. She opened the passenger door and JJ stepped out giving her a small thanks. Before they went to walk over to their hotel room. (they were sharing a hotel room because of the shitty department budget, thankfully with two beds this time.)
When they entered the room JJ went straight for her bag grabbing her pajamas, and going into the bathroom to take a shower. When she got out of the bathroom she immediately went straight for her bed, face first and groaned. Emily looked at her with something akin to empathy before schooling her features. Then she went over to the table sitting in the corner of the room, and put down the paperwork she had brought home with them.
She went over to her bag grabbing a pair of sweatpants and a sweatshirt, going into the bathroom to change into the clothes. When Emily left the bathroom she went over to JJ’s bed, looking down at her, she just wanted to make her friend feel better.
“Do you want to talk about it? Do you want me to put on a movie? Do you want to do the rest of the paperwork? Or do you want me to just ignore that anything happened?”
Emily asked. JJ just hummed, face still digging into the mattress.
“Okaaay,”
She said, before rolling JJ over on the bed so she could look her in the eyes when she spoke to her. JJ yelped when she was moved, she glared at Emily for a second, who just shrugged. Then JJ turned her gaze towards the ceiling.
“Please answer me!”
Emily begged, as she sat down on her bed, still facing JJ.
“I’m not leaving you alone until you do.”
She said after JJ still didn’t say anything. Emily just sat there for fifteen minutes with her elbows on her knees, head in her hands staring at the wall, before she heard JJ say anything.
“Can we just watch a movie?”
JJ asked, her voice almost breaking.
“Whatever you want sweetheart, what do you want to watch?”
She said in the softest voice she could.
“Can we watch ‘The Devil Wears Prada’?”
“Ofcourse baby.”
She answered remembering that JJ mentioned that it was one of her comfort movies despite it being relatively new a few weeks ago.
“Would it be okay if I moved the beds together so that we can watch it more easily?”
She asked, while walking over to her bag to grab her laptop. When she turned around she saw JJ nodding, so she unlocked her laptop, handed it to JJ and told her to find the movie. Then she walked over to the other side of her bed so that she could push it up against JJ’s.
Emily went over to the mini fridge that sat beside the table to grab two water bottles. When she turned back to their now joint bed JJ was sitting up with her back against the wall, with a pillow between. And the laptop on her lap. Emily smiled a meek smile, handed JJ a water bottle and sat on the bed in the same manner as her, but with the lower part of her body under the sheets.
JJ started the movie, and they just sat there in silence, the only noise in the room being the film and the occasional sound of their bottles being opened, and sips being taken.

A third of the way through the movie JJ moved the computer over on Emily’s lap and shifted in a way that made her able to get the covers over her legs. All the while mumbling something about being cold.

When there was around 20 minutes left of the movie, Emily felt JJ’s head on her shoulder looking down and realised that JJ had fallen asleep. She smiled softly, lifted her laptop off her legs, closed it and put it on the side table. She had brushed her teeth when she changed earlier so she didn’t need to worry about it later.
She lifted JJ’s head off her shoulder softly, trying not to wake her up. She laid her down, with her head on the pillow. Then she kissed JJ’s forehead, before checking that her alarm was set for the next day, and then laying down her body turned towards JJ. “Goodnight sweetheart.” she said to her before letting her eyes drift closed. Her last thought before she lost consciousness being that they were going to get through this together, before falling asleep.
That night she didn’t have any nightmares for the first time in months, instead she dreamed of a little house in the suburbs with two kids running around in the backyard calling her mommy, and JJ mama.
