Work Text:
Ming Yi frowned down at the mechanical dragonfly that was lying deconstructed on her crafting table. She was so close to getting it to work. It could fly and talk and let her see through its eyes. She just needed to get it to actually go where she told it instead of circling around her head. Maybe if she…
A kiss pressed to her hair and a warm arm around her shoulders distracted her from her calculations. “Ming Yi,” Ji Bozai said into her ear, “it’s time for bed.”
Ming Yi turned in his arms and pouted up at him. “Not yet, I’ve almost got it!”
Ji Bozai had the audacity to chuckle at her, blatant amusement in his eyes. “Mmhm. And how much progress have you made since the last time you said that?”
Ming Yi looked away and wrinkled her nose. “Not much,” she admitted. “But hey, it’s only been an hour! I just need a little longer!”
Ji Bozai tapped her nose, making her eyes slide out of focus as she tried to follow the movement. “An hour? Try three,” he said, still laughing.
Ming Yi wriggled against his embrace and tried to look around the crafting pavilion. Sure enough, the moon had shifted well over an hour’s worth in the sky since the last time she’d looked up from the dragonfly. “No,” she gasped.
“Yes,” Ji Bozai responded. “Take a break, it will still be there in the morning.”
Ming Yi frowned. “But I’m so close…” Surely if she just kept going a little bit longer she’d unlock the secret to the directionality…
Ji Bozai sighed. “Ming Yi. Dearest wife. Warrior Goddess. Come to bed.”
The tone on that last made her look at him, and he captured her mouth in a kiss that left no doubt that he intended more than sleep in the offer. Ming Yi melted into the kiss, her hands coming up to stroke his back as his mouth pressed warm and heated against hers.
“Yes,” she murmured when he drew back slightly for air, their breaths intermingled. “It can wait till morning.”
“Good,” Ji Bozai said, then repositioned his hold on her and swept her into his arms.
“Ji Bozai!” Ming Yi exclaimed in protest. “I can walk!”
“Mm, you can.” he agreed without pausing as he walked them both toward the bedroom. “But then I wouldn’t be able to do this,” he pointed out, and kissed her again. He kept kissing her, light and easy and playful, as he navigated them both through the doorway and into the bedroom.
Ming Yi rather thought they could have managed a similar amount of kissing while walking even if they’d both been on their feet, actually, she was just as nimble as he was, but he was stubborn when he got an idea in his head.
“Alright, alright, fine,” she said, then giggled breathlessly as he reached the bed and tumbled them both into it. “There, I’ve come to bed,” she pointed out as he trailed kisses down her neck and began working at the ties of her robes.
“Mmm, good,” Ji Bozai murmured into her skin. “My talented, brilliant wife will definitely figure out how to make the best mechanical spy dragonfly.” Then with a nip to her collarbone that made her gasp, added firmly, “Tomorrow.” He kissed his way back up her neck and claimed her mouth.
Ming Yi laughed against his mouth and surrendered fully to enjoying the night with her husband.
