Chapter Text

The dream always started with the hum of a failing core.

In the hazy, golden-hued memory of Dr. Thomas Light, the lab was smaller then. It smelled of ozone, fresh solder, and the faint, sweet scent of the wild jasmine that grew outside the original workshop. In the center of the room stood DLN-000.

"Blues," Thomas whispered in the dream.

The young robot turned. He didn't have his trademark shades yet. His eyes were wide, bright, and filled with a terrifyingly human curiosity. He looked at his hands, then at the power gauge on the wall that was fluctuating wildly into the red.

"Father," Blues said, his voice crackling with static. "I feel... a hitch. Like a clock that skips a second. Is it the magic? Is the mana-integration failing?"

"It’s a flaw in the power converter, son. We can fix it. I just need to take you offline for a few weeks to—"

"No."

The word was a strike of lightning. The boy stepped back into the shadows of the lab, his yellow scarf fluttering despite the lack of wind.

"I won't be a broken machine, Father. I won't let you rewrite who I am just to keep the lights on."

Then came the flash. A blinding, solar flare of energy that tasted like copper and old parchment. When Thomas reached out, his hands met only empty air and the lingering warmth of a cooling reactor.

Thomas Light jerked awake with a gasp.

The sunlight of the year 200X was streaming through the windows of his bedroom in Mega City, casting long, peaceful shadows across his quilt. He took a shaky breath, rubbing his face with his weathered hands. Even after all these years, the ghost of his first son still haunted the quiet moments of his morning.

"Just a dream, Thomas," he muttered to himself, reaching for his lab coat. "The past is written in ink. The future is still in pencil."

He headed downstairs, his mind already drifting toward the day's schedule. Today was a big day. His brother, Ted, was driving in from Silicon City with Aki and Suna. Together, they were going to finalize the coding for the new industrial line—the Robot Masters.

Thomas stepped into the kitchen, heading toward the basement lab door. He was still half-lost in thoughts about DLN-00A: Ice Man and DLN-00B: Time Man when he pushed the door open.

"Gah! Good Heavens!"

Thomas nearly jumped out of his slippers.

Standing exactly three inches from the door were DLN-001: Rock, and DLN-002: Roll. They were perfectly still, their eyes wide and sparkling with enough caffeine-equivalent energy to power a small suburb.

"Good morning, Dad!" they chirped in unison.

Rock was wearing a simple oversized blue t-shirt with a cartoon gear on the front and grey pajama bottoms. Roll, however, looked ready for a very stylish sleepover. With her hair down, she wore a purple tank top, vibrant pink pajama pants that were slightly too long for her, and thick, red-striped socks that muffled her footsteps on the cold tile.

"You two... you're up early," Thomas panted, clutching his chest. "I thought your internal clocks were set for 7:30?"

"We couldn't sleep!" Rock said, bouncing on his heels. "Uncle Ted is coming! And Suna and Aki! We haven't seen them since the last tech-expo in Silicon City."

"And the Master Line!" Roll added, stepping around her father to lead the way into the lab. "Rock and I already did a preliminary diagnostic on Cut Man and Guts Man while we were waiting for you to wake up. They're at ninety-eight percent synchronization!"

Thomas chuckled, the last of his nightmare finally dissolving in the face of his children’s enthusiasm. He followed them into the heart of the lab.

The workshop was a marvel of the modern age. Along the far wall stood the containment units for the new brothers. Cut Man (DLN-003) sat on a workbench, his ceramic titanium blades catching the morning light. Beside him, the massive frame of Guts Man (DLN-004) was hooked up to a heavy-duty charger. Further down, the newer models—Oil Man, Bomb Man, Fire Man, and Elec Man—waited for their final activations.

"Careful with Oil Man’s canisters, Roll," Thomas warned gently as she skipped past the sleek, black-clad robot. "The formula we used is highly reactive to mana-fluctuations. If he leaks, the whole lab will smell like a wizard’s apothecary for a month."

"I've got it, Dad!" Roll said, hopping onto a rolling stool. She began typing away at a console, her red-striped socks dangling. "I’m just checking the cooling vents on Fire Man. He runs a bit hot when he’s excited."

Rock walked over to his father, his expression softening. He noticed the slight tremor in Thomas’s hand as he picked up a wrench.

"Did you have the dream again?" Rock asked quietly.

Thomas paused. He could never hide anything from Rock. The boy was built with a level of emotional intuition that sometimes surpassed his own. "A little bit of the past, Rock. Nothing to worry about."

"We’re going to get the mana right this time," Rock said firmly, placing a small, metal hand over his father’s. "The Master Line is going to change the world. Tech and magic, working together. No one will suffer like he did."

"I know, son," Thomas smiled, patting Rock’s head. "I know. Now, let’s see about Ice Man and Time Man. They’re still in the delicate stages, and I’d like them to be presentable before your cousins arrive. I don't want your Uncle Ted thinking I've gone soft in my old age."

The lab filled with the sounds of productive morning chaos—the rhythmic beep of monitors, the whir of servos, and the lighthearted bickering of two siblings who were as much "children" as they were "machines."

Five miles away, the wind howled through the steel canyons of Mega City’s financial district.

At the very peak of the Chronicle Building, perched on the edge of a gargoyle that was more art-deco than ancient, a lone figure sat. He was silhouetted against the rising sun, his shadow stretching long and thin over the streets below.

The figure adjusted a yellow scarf that snapped violently in the gale. He reached up, sliding a pair of dark, wrap-around shades into place, hiding eyes that were filled with a complicated mixture of longing and bitterness.

He looked toward the outskirts of the city, where the roof of Light Labs was just visible through the morning haze.

"A new era," the figure whispered to the wind.

He stood up, his red and gray armor gleaming with a dull, metallic luster. He didn't look like a hero, and he certainly didn't look like a toy. He looked like a survivor.

With a sharp whistle that sounded suspiciously like a melody, he turned away from the sunrise and vanished into the shadows of the rooftop.

The morning calm of Light Labs was shattered by the rhythmic honk of a heavy-duty transport van.

"They're here!" Rock shouted, dropping a hydro-wrench that clattered against the floor. He and Roll were out the door before Thomas could even set down his coffee mug.

Pulling into the driveway was a sleek, white vehicle marked with the Silicon City Robotics logo. Out stepped Dr. Ted Light—Thomas’s younger, slightly more eccentric brother—followed by two adolescents. Aki, wearing his signature blue-and-white hoodie, looked around the Mega City skyline with wide-eyed wonder, while his sister Suna held a digital tablet, already scanning the lab’s exterior mana-signature.

"Thomas! You old gear-grinder!" Ted bellowed, pulling his brother into a crushing hug. "The air in Mega City smells like progress and... is that lavender?"

"Wild jasmine, Ted. Welcome," Thomas laughed.

As the elders retreated to the kitchen to discuss the "Deep Tech" integration, the cousins converged. "Check out the new chassis, Aki!" Rock said, showing off the polished gray plating he was carrying.

"Killer," Aki grinned, though his eyes drifted toward the basement. "But I want to see the heavy hitters. Dad says you’re actually stabilizing the violence of Oil Man’s man… something."

“The volatility of his mana drive.” Rock corrected.

“Yeah that.” Aki said as if he knew what he was talking about.

"Not just that," Suna interjected, looking up from her tablet. "If my readings are right, your new 'Time Man' model is actually causing localized temporal drag. We need to sync the Master Line before the 2:00 PM unveiling, or the Mayor’s speech might last for three days."

The next four hours were a blur of sparks, glowing runes, and frantic coding. The "Sparkling Steel" montage began in earnest:

  • 10:30 AM: Under Suna’s supervision, Roll recalibrated the ceramic blades on Cut Man. Every time the blades snapped shut, a faint ring of green magical energy pulsed, ensuring they could cut through both physical steel and magical barriers.
  • 11:15 AM: Rock assisted Guts Man in lifting massive mana-batteries into the housing units for Bomb Man and Fire Man. "Steady, big guy," Rock coached. Guts Man let out a booming laugh, his heavy jaw-plate shifting. "I got it, Little Light! Stronger than a mountain!"
  • 12:00 PM: The most delicate part. Thomas and Ted stood before the tanks of Ice Man and Time Man. While Oil Man (DLN-005) was already up and skating around the lab on his treads, Time and Ice were the wildcards in terms of materials.
  • 1:15 PM: Final synchronization. Thomas stood at the master console. "Initiating the Sparkling Steel Protocol. Rock, Roll—front and center."

The siblings stood at the head of the line. Behind them, in perfect numerical order, stood the brothers: the jagged silhouette of Cut Man, the towering Guts Man, the sleek Oil Man, the heavy-duty Bomb Man, the flickering Fire Man, and the sparking Elec Man. At the very end, still radiating a faint, chilling mist and a strange, shimmering distortion, were Time and Ice.

"You look like a real team," Aki said, a hint of something—longing, perhaps?—in his voice.

The Mega City Expo Plaza was packed. Thousands of citizens, reporters, and even a few skeptical mages from the local Academy gathered under the afternoon sun.

"Citizens of Mega City!" Mayor Dorado announced, gesturing toward the curtained stage. "Today, science and magic cease their rivalry. Dr. Thomas Light presents the future of industrial harmony!"

The curtains parted.

First stepped out DLN-001: Rock and DLN-002: Roll. They didn't look like industrial tools; they looked like the pinnacle of humanity’s potential. Rock waved with a humble smile, while Roll struck a pose, her red accents catching the light.

"They aren't just robots," Thomas’s voice echoed over the speakers. "They are my children. And they have helped me create a workforce that will build a world where no one has to labor in danger again."

One by one, the Master Line stepped forward:

  • DLN-003: Cut Man (Logging and Land Clearing)
  • DLN-004: Guts Man (Civil Engineering)
  • DLN-005: Oil Man (Maintenance and Lubrication)
  • DLN-006: Bomb Man (Demolition and Mining)
  • DLN-007: Fire Man (Waste Management and Power)
  • DLN-008: Elec Man (Grid Stabilization)

The crowd roared as Elec Man sent a controlled arc of golden lightning into a demonstration coil. Finally, the "Specialists" were revealed: DLN-00A: Ice Man and DLN-00B: Time Man.

In the VIP box, a man with a wild mane of grey hair and a lab coat that had seen better days watched through a pair of high-tech binoculars. Beside him sat a younger, sharper-looking man with a cruel, thin mustache—the Wily Brothers.

"Look at them, Theo," the elder Wily hissed. "Wasting technology by blending it with magic of all things."

"Patience, Albert," the younger Wily replied, his eyes fixed on Roll. "Thomas always did have a soft heart. You'll prove that tech is superior soon enough."

High above on a nearby skyscraper, the figure in the yellow scarf watched the celebration. He saw Rock laughing, saw the Master Line standing proud. He felt the "hitch" in his own core, the flaw that made him a ghost.

"Enjoy the sunlight, little brother," Blues whispered, his voice lost in the wind. "Stay strong..."

Following the roaring success of the Expo, the Lights and the DLN robots returned to Light Labs for a well-deserved celebration. Streamers hung from the ceiling pipes, and Guts Man was carefully attempting to cut a massive cake with Cut Man’s gentle assistance.

The festivities were soon joined by another arrival. The lab’s pneumatic doors hissed open, revealing Professor Emilia Light. At twenty-five, Thomas’s biological daughter was a brilliant mind in her own right, running LightCo—a highly successful subsidiary of Light Labs.

"Dad!" Emilia smiled warmly, walking in to give Thomas a hug. "The presentation was flawless. Silicon City's investors are already calling."

"Emilia, my dear, it's wonderful to see you," Thomas beamed, pulling back to look at the figure hiding nervously behind her coat. "And who is this?"

Emilia stepped aside, revealing a small robot with yellow-and-gray clothing, an oversized pair of headphones and a custom helmet with two distinct pigtails made of synthetic cables. She clung tightly to Emilia's pant leg, peeking out with wide, shy optics.

"This is Trancy," Emilia introduced gently, resting a hand on the girl's helmet. "My newly adopted robo-sister. I finished her integration last week, and she’s a bit overwhelmed by crowds."

Rock and Roll immediately trotted over, their innate friendliness overriding any formalities. "Hi, Trancy!" Roll beamed, crouching down to her eye level. "I'm Roll! And this is my brother Rock. We're so happy to meet you!"

Trancy squeaked softly, retreating an inch, before giving a tiny, timid wave. "H-hello..."

Before Rock could offer her a piece of cake, the lab's proximity alarms blared. The joyous atmosphere shattered instantly as the heavy reinforced ceiling of the workshop caved in.

Through the dust and falling debris descended a heavily armed hover-ship. The Wily Brothers stood at the boarding ramp. Albert wielded a massive, anti-magic disruption rifle, while Theo controlled a set of sprawling, mechanical capture claws via a datapad.

"Evening, Thomas!" Albert cackled, his wild hair blowing in the wind of the hover-thrusters. "I’m here to correct a mistake! Technology bends to no archaic parlor tricks!"

"Shut them down, Albert," Theo ordered coldly.

Albert fired a wide-beam pulse. The anti-magic EMP washed over the room. Instantly, the elemental crystals powering the newly minted Robot Masters flickered and died. Cut Man dropped to his knees, clutching his head, while Fire Man's flames extinguished into a pathetic puff of smoke.

"My brothers!" Rock cried out, rushing forward.

"Rock, wait!" Dr. Light yelled, but it was too late. Theo’s mechanical claws shot out from the ship like striking vipers, snatching up the deactivated Master Line one by one. Cut, Guts, Oil, Bomb, Fire, Elec, Ice, and Time were hoisted into the ship's holding bays with brutal efficiency.

A stray claw suddenly pivoted, locking onto Rock. It shot forward with blinding speed.

"Rock! Look out!"

Roll tackled her brother, shoving him hard out of the claw's path. She had no time to recover. The metal talons clamped tightly around her waist, hoisting her into the air.

"Roll!" Rock screamed, reaching out desperately as she was pulled away.

"I’ll take this one for a little... reprogramming," Theo smirked, his eyes gleaming with malicious intent as he looked at the captured sister. "Let's go, Albert."

The ship’s thrusters roared, tearing a larger hole in the roof as the Wily Brothers escaped into the darkening sky, taking nine of Thomas Light's robots with them.

The lab was left in ruins. Dust settled over the crushed cake and sparking wires.

Rock slammed his fists onto the floor, his mechanical body shaking with fury and grief.

"I have to get them back," Rock vowed, clenching his fists. "All of them."

"I... I want to help," a small voice trembled.

He turned to see Trancy stepping forward from behind a collapsed workbench. She was shaking like a leaf, her small hands balled into tight fists.

Rock stood up, giving her a sad but firm shake of his head. "It's too dangerous, Trancy. You just got here. You don't have to fight."

Trancy looked down at her feet, then slowly turned her visor up toward Emilia. The young professor knelt, looking into Trancy's optics. She didn't see a frightened machine; she saw a spark of immense courage.

"She's stronger than she looks, Rock," Emilia said softly, giving Trancy an encouraging nod. "If she wants to protect her family, I give her my permission."

While the kids rallied, Dr. Thomas Light walked over to a hidden vault in the wall, his face etched with grim determination. He beckoned Rock over.

"The Robot Masters were powered by elemental magic crystals," Thomas explained, his voice hushed as he pulled out a glowing, pure-white gem. "But I have been saving this. A rare Light magic crystal. Far more powerful, but incredibly difficult to synthesize."

He placed the crystal into a heavy, mana-injection machine on his desk. Next to it, he set down a sleek, silver wrist-device. The machine whirred to life, injecting the raw, magical essence into the technology. When it finished, he handed the "Magi-Watch" to Rock.

"I made spares," Thomas added softly, his eyes momentarily distant. "One for Roll... and one for Blues. Should he ever need it."

"It's time!" Professor Emilia announced. "Call upon the Sparkling Steel!"

Transformation Sequence—Initiate!

Rock raised his wrist. The Magi-Watch flashed with blinding, pure light. Ribbons of cerulean blue mana swirled around him, materializing into sleek, heavy-duty armor. A helmet materialized over his head with a satisfying shing, leaving his determined face exposed.

Rockman was online.

And Trancy, stepping out from Emilia's side, closed her eyes as rings of neon pink energy snapped around her, shifting her timid chassis into a sleek, battle-ready combat form.

Hyper Trancy was online.

The four of them regrouped in the center of the ruined lab, their armors gleaming with the perfect synthesis of science and sorcery.

Dr. Light stood at the teleporter console, typing in the coordinates traced from Theo Wily’s ship.

"The coordinates are locked to their first stronghold," Thomas said, looking at the newly formed team. "Be careful, my children."

Rockman nodded, his Rock Buster charging with a hum of Light magic.

"Let's go save our family."

In a flash of brilliant, sparkling light, the heroes vanished into the teleporter beam.

Outside, Suna chased after her little brother who was running in the direction the ship went. His built in magic sensors acting as a tracker.

“Aki, stop!” Suna called, “What are you doing?!”

“I’m going after them!” Aki yelled. Suna grabbed his arm.

“Aki, don’t!”

“Suna, if we don’t hurry, then they could be gone forever! I’m not just gonna sit around and do nothing!”

“What if they take you to?! They probably only left you because they either don’t know you’re a robot or they have a grudge against Uncle Thomas.” Suna pleaded.

“I…” suddenly Aki’s sensors picked something up. A huge magic spike, coming from a nearby forest. He made his way there.

“Now where are you going?!” Suna demanded as she followed him.

“I’m picking something up, something big.” He said. The kids looked around and grabbed big sticks, just in case. When they arrived at the source of the signal, they were surprised to see something small.

It, no, he was two inches tall, brimming with magic. Maybe a pixie of sorts? He wore a gray bodysuit with an M on the chest, and a helmet with goggles. He groaned.

“Ugh… what happened…?” The little creature said.

“Woah! What are you?” Aki asked. He and Suna bent down.

“Hey, hey! I’m not a ‘what’ I’m a who! The name’s Mini.” The creature said.

“I’m Aki, and that’s my big sis, Suna!” Aki introduced.

“Pleasure to meet ya. So what are you two doin’ out in the enchanted forest? Its no place for kids all alone.” Mini said.

“Some bad guys took my cousins away! I was going after them!” Aki said.

“And I was stopping him before he gets himself killed!” Suna said.

“What kind of threat are we talkin’ about?” Mini asked. Suna and Aki explained everything.

“Alright, I get it. But kid, if you go alone, yer gonna get yourself hurt! So how about lettin’ me help you?” Mini asked.

“Really?!” Aki asked.

“Yeah, I can give you two some of my magic! Aki, you’re a robot, right? I know technomancy, I can fix up yer systems on the fly!” Mini said, hoping onto his shoulder.

“So cool!” Aki said. Mini scanned him. And he found weapons, deadly ones, buried beneath many, many safeguards. There were some though, that weren’t hidden behind safeguards, merely deactivated. Best to use those.

“Hold on, kid. You… you already got weapons systems already!” Mini said.

“I do? I have superpowers?” Aki asked.

“Yeah, looks like!” Mini said.

“I could be a superhero! Stopping bad guys and saving the day!” Aki said.

“S-Slow down, robro. Being a hero takes training, and you don’t have any!” Suna said.

“Don’t worry about him, Suna. I can share some magic with you too!“ Mini said. “If you two will let me. I may need to modify a few things, so I get if you don’t want me to.”

“Do it. Together, we’ll save my cousins.” Aki said.

Mini went inside Aki’s head, creating a small control center for himself.

“Alright. Ready to Meganize?” Mini said.

“Meganize?” Aki asked.

“Ya know, its gonna be the thing you say when you wanna transform!” Mini said.

“Like how Usagi says ‘In the name of the Moon’ before becoming Sailor Moon.” Suna said.

“It’s ‘Moon Prism Power: Make Up!’, actually.” Aki corrected before realizing what he said. “Which I uh, I know from seeing it on TV when it happens to be on cause its a show I definitely don’t watch!” he lied nervously.

“I ain’t here to judge. Anyway, lets do this!” Mini said.

“MEGANIZE ME!” Aki shouted as Mini's magic interfaced with his latent tech. Bright light engulfed him, solidifying into the high-tech, glowing armor of his new form, an arm-cannon forming seamlessly over his hand.

Mega Man was online.

Suna’s tablet dissolved into data ribbons that re-wove themselves into a brilliant, magical tech-suit, granting her a saber pulsing with analytical energy.

Zero was online.

”Alright! Now I can be Mega Man!” Aki said.

“Because Humble Man wouldn’t fit.” Suna teased.

“Hey! I gotta have a cool name for people to call me! Secret identities and all. What about you?” Mega Man asked.

“Zero.” She said.

“Awesome.” Mega Man said in awe. “Let’s go tell dad!”

“Hold on. I think we should… keep this on the down low. Dad’s cool, but he wouldn’t want us in danger…” Zero said. Mega Man looked away.

“You’re right… let’s go!”

Ted Light watched all of this go down, having ran after his kids the moment the shock wore off. He knew the pain of a child being stolen, as around 10 years ago, Aki’s twin, Daini, was stolen when Ted wasn’t around. And there were no clues as to who took him. Thomas helped him search for about a year before giving up, declaring the boy dead, though Ted never stopped searching. He looked at Mega Man and Zero. He knew he couldn’t stop them, so he would support them, and keep their secret, even though it meant pretending he didn’t know…

Both duos, oblivious to one another, ran toward the ultimate battle between science and magic.

Notes:

Hello! Its the co-author Eway. We couldn’t decide what serial numbers to give Time Man and Oil Man. Then I found out Oil Man was planned for Mega Man 1. In fact, the concept art I saw had him but not Ice Man. So we switched Oil and Ice’s positions and put Time at the end.

This was my idea so if anyone takes issue with it, take it up with me, not two4601.

From two4601: Any thoughts? Leave a kudos, and comment down below!

The battle begins now!
