Whenever Racket stared at the inphernal currently laying down on top of him, the only thought that tended to cross his mind was ‘how could someone like this have ever wanted me?’. It’s... not like he’s trying to sound so self-deprecative, but despite having been in this relationship for a few months now, his mind still hasn’t seemed to have processed that this guy actually wants him.
There had to be a catch, right? This relationship would fail soon, wouldn’t it? There was no way Racket would have been able to pull someone like him. Not long-term. Especially not with his seemingly unwavering confidence, and the genuinely gleeful sparkle that usually resided in his red eyes. Red eyes framed by pretty gray lashes connected to his soft, yet structured face, with those cute freckles on his cheeks and the curls that fall over them. Someone that gorgeous and charismatic should have no business involving themselves with the chubby, whiny loser that is Racket.
And yet, his arms are still wrapped tightly around Racket's waist. His nose is still nestled against the crook of Racket's neck, his breath gently rustling the pale gray fur on Racket's shoulder. Like he wanted to be there. Racket would not be so stupid as to try and push him away in order to avoid what may be inevitable. If Racket is who he thinks he wants, then Racket is going to be there until he isn’t. Maybe, with any luck, it will take a while before he ever wants someone else.
It was unfair, really. Why did it have to be someone so terribly, painfully out of his league that made Racket trip over his own heart? Why did it have to be like this, when Racket could have remained blissfully resigned to a reality where he didn’t ever have someone like this? Where he didn’t feel the need to pull someone so close to him? Unwittingly, his paws tighten their grip on the hoodie of the one settled on top of him.
Why-? Racket’s spiraling thoughts are interrupted by their subject tilting his head up a bit to blink blearily at Racket’s blank face. A slightly sleepy frown pulls at his features, and he squints questioningly at the distant look in the other inphernal’s eyes.
“Baby?” Racket’s not sure why just hearing him call Racket that is making something hot prickle behind his eyes, but he doesn’t appreciate it. It shouldn’t be so easy for him to make Racket crumble like this. Yet the tears beading up in the corners of his eyes don’t care what should or shouldn’t be happening, and they fall anyways, running down the sides of his cheeks and pooling uncomfortably in his ears. He attempts to stop it, to stifle his slightly shaky breathing, by wiping at his eyes. But the other’s paw gently wraps around Racket’s own, moving it to the side so that he can be looked at properly.
He’s sat up fully by now, so Racket doesn’t have much hope of trying to convince him to go back to sleep. This is a fact Racket regrets, as he tries to avoid those gorgeous red eyes by turning his head to the side. It’s already shameful enough that he can’t seem to quell all these silly thoughts caught in his own head, but to have him both woken up and seeing Racket cry about it? It’s even worse.
“Racket. Hey.” And the other paw reaches towards Racket’s face, shifting it so that Racket has no choice but to look at him. The concern on his face is almost painful, making a tight knot of guilt start to form in Racket’s gut. It’s clear by his silence that he wants Racket to talk about it, to bare his heart, but Racket can’t make much of a sound outside of the small hiccupping sobs he’s trying to stop from escaping his throat. He’d apologize, if he could catch a breath big enough to be used for something other than crying. It’s stupid, really.
“...Fine. Jus’ tell me in the mornin’, won’t ya?” Racket can only really be thankful for small mercies, as instead of deciding to interrogate him, the other just sighs softly, leaning down to press his lips against Racket’s cheek and then slumping softly against his chest. His paw squeezes Racket’s again, his thumb rubbing against the pad on Racket’s palm until he stops crying and conks out due to emotional exhaustion. It would be nice, if he were willing to share that burden with Skateboard, but it’s hard to get someone so emotionally cagey to admit things like that. He’s lucky Racket even managed to admit that he liked him at all, if it’s this bad.
Dork. He’s lucky he’s cute.
