Didn't Think I'd Turn Around

Summary:

What if Rey didn't talk to Luke and resurrect his old ship? And what if Kylo followed Rey to Ahch-To instead of to Exegol? This is that story. If, you know, the story was written in 15 minutes and is super short.

Notes:

For writing Prompt: “You tell me that you’re sorry, didn’t think I’d turn around.”

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

“I’m sorry, Ben.”

Kylo stopped in his tracks, a part of his brain surprised that he didn’t slip on the wet stones. The rain was beating down and it was hard to see, but suddenly it didn’t matter.

“You’re…sorry?” Kylo turned and roared. “You stab a person, heal them, take off in their ship and fucking SET IT ON FIRE? Decide to hermit on this wet island in the middle of nowhere, just like my uncle? You’re better than that, Rey! You have more to your future, than punishing yourself.”

“Look, I’m sorry for stabbing you, ok, but I am not going to apologize for deciding to stay here. I’m sick of being a pawn in everyone else's game.”

That made him freeze.

“Maybe you should try it too.” Rey folded her arms.

Kylo threw up his arms. “Palpatine is literally in my head. You think I have a choice?”

“I think you could try. Surely there’s a way to block him.”

Kylo looked at her incredulously. “You want me to try and block him to what…stay here with you on Ahch-To and just let the galaxy burn?”

She faltered at that. Yeah, he knew that would get her. She was going through something right now, but that didn’t erase the part of her that somehow cared for everyone despite everything.

Her gaze dropped to the ground. “I’m just so tired of fighting you.”

Kylo felt the depth of that statement through their bond and he closed the distance between them in two steps, wrapping his arms around her. “Then let’s finish this.”

“I’m not going to stab you again,” she sniffed against his chest.

“Please don’t.”

“I’m not going to help you blow up the resistance, either. So where does that leave us?”

He took her shoulders and looked her square in the eye. “Let’s go destroy Palpatine and end him. Then we can come back here if you want. Stop being pawns, but let’s do it right, and then let’s do it all together.”

Rey looked at him with wide, wet eyes. “You’d do that?”

He’d do anything for her. But he didn’t know if he was ready to tell her that.

“Yes.”

Notes:

Had so much fun with Ladyofreylo, doing 15-30 minute writing prompts the other day. I'd never thought of a canon divergence at this particular point in the story so it was fun. I hope you enjoyed reading!

She also used this prompt but for a scene in a longer story. I'll edit and link to it when she's published it...

The prompt is a lyric chunk from the awesome song "Apologize" by OneRepublic.
