WARPHANDLE OOOOO-part one
Handlebarb's pov
The tape on Shredderella's bars was coming up slightly around the edges. Handlebarb picked at the loose strands, and groaned, they would have to retape them for the fourth time this month.
However all of this was worth it for the best tricks possible. They know from experience that unstuck bars lead to more falls.
They inched their bike closer to the edge of the ramp, tasting the cool summer air. Every aspect was crucial to the perfect wheelie, the wind, the temperature, and finally the concentration. All of the things on the list of conditions was perfect.
Handlebarb started tapping the edge of the bell on their bike in impatience.
"HELLO?" they called down to her friends below
Every second just sitting there felt like hours.
They heard Cannonball calling from below "It's safe to jump now! We took care of the raccoons."
Finally
They gripped their handlebars and flew down the ramp, slowly gaining speed as they went. Slowly but surely, they popped up on their back tire, the wind hammering against their face and forcing them to squint their eyes.
Handlebarb slowed to a crisp stop, carefully turning to the side as to not hit the trees.
"Woah!" Todd announced from behind the ramp. Ot had taken a whole afternoon to construct out of cardboard and old rocks from the creek. However, their hard work had paid off in the form of an amazing obstacle for bike riding.
"Handlebarb that was amazing!" Warpspeed yelled through the chaos, a large smile pressed at his cheeks. Handlebarb could feel their face getting a little hot at his excitement. It wasn't like the trick was that cool, right?
They got off of Shrederella and put up her kickstand, making their way towards the rest of the crowd. Swiping a bag of Doritos from a picnic table, they sat down with the rest of the Tenspeeds.
The seal on the bag wasn't opening as easily as they thought, so tugging around it wouldn't work.
Handlebarb handed the bag to Cannonball and he opened it with ease, setting it on the table next to him.
"So what are we going to do later?" Warpspeed asked.
"Well I have to go home soon, my mom's making burgers." Todd said, frowning a little.
"Oh my gosh!" Handlebarb called "Lucky!"
"Yeah, your mom's burgers are the best." Warpspeed notes absent-mindedly.
"And I can't stay past 7:00 either," Cannonball pouted, "I have to go to bed early for the math test tomorrow."
Sad Handlebarb thought. No one could hang out tonight.
"Is anyone free?" They groaned
"I am!" Warpspeed announced "Maybe we can ask my dad if we can have a sleepover."
That didn't sound like too bad of a plan.
"Okay!" They cheered. Handlebarb hoped they didn't sound too happy. Well, they were happy, but hey didn't want it to sound weird or something.
A few hours went by and Warpspeed's dad let them stay over, as long as their mom was fine with it.
They used to have group sleepovers all the time in the summer, but when school started up again they couldn't do it as much. Handlebarb liked hanging out with her friend, but they couldn't grasp exactly why their thoughts felt faster around him.
It had been like this for a few months now. Warpspeed had always been cool, but now handlebarb thought he was even cooler. And they couldn't help but notice the soft curves in his face, the way he made a little whooping sound after landing a big jump, and they way he pushed his glasses up when they fell. Who wouldn't?
Their mom's car pulled into his driveway, tires rolling over the harsh tan pavement. The little garden stones in the planters in front of warpspeed's house had always been their favorite.
A bit of moss was growing on the magnolia tree planted there. Handlebarb felt nostalgic for the summers they spent climbing all over that tree, before his mother told them they were too big.
They walked up the sidewalk path and rung the doorbell. Handlebarb could hear their heart beating in their head.
His mom opened the door and greeted their mom, and they discussed that handlebarb would have to go home at 7:30 tomorrow to get ready for school.
They left their shoes by the door and went upstairs to Warpspeed's room, knocking on the door.
"Come in!" He yelled, his voice muffled through the door.
They walked through the door, only to find warpspeed sitting cross-legged on the floor with a game of uno set up for the two of them.
"Sick!" Handlebarb said, excitedly sitting down to play the game.
A few minutes into the game and it was starting to get a bit full, and by dull, handlebarb meant: they weren't winning.
A glint of pompous mischief flashed in warpspeeds eyes before he placed down a colorful "+4" card. The audacity. How could handlebarb win now, if their opponent was down to three cards and they had eight.
Handlebarb's eyes narrowed at warpspeed, before throwing their cards into the air and tackling him.
"HEY!" he screamed, laughing maniacally. "GET OFF!"
They flipped off of him, giggling aggressively. They couldn't shake the looming feeling of affection around the boy. They just wanted to tackle and punch him again. Because, there's no way he could have been winning without cheating, it just couldn't be. Handlebarb was the best at uno.
"Okay, I guess no more uno." Warpspeed laughed, he looked like someone had just hit him with a bus. "what next?"
"I dunno" They answered, "we could like draw or something."
"Alright"
"Cool"
Warpspeed flew downstairs, grabbing a few pieces of printer paper and bringing it upstairs.
Handlebarb had no idea what to draw, their art teacher last year told them to find inspiration in the things around her. So, that's what they did. They looked around the room for something to draw, but everything either looked to boring or too hard. Eventually, their eyes landed on warpspeed, he was pretty easy to draw.
Their pencil met the paper harshly, almost breaking the lead. Art was never Handlebarb's strongsuit.
They drew a circle for his head and two ovals for eyes, they were a little lopsided but that was fine. A curved line would be good for a mouth.
He looked a little strange, but that was the best handlebarb could do and it was the thought that counted.
"I'm done!" They cheered, showing her friend the janky piece of paper.
Warpspeed stared at it blankly for a few seconds, his eyes wide and a smile tugging at his mouth. "Is that me?" he asked.
"Yeah." Handlebarb said harshly
"Oh, yeah, that's really cool" he nervously laughed.
He looked a little shell shocked, well they didn't know for sure, but it was a bit of an assumption.
