Work Text:

Brock is obsessed with Steve Rogers, he has been since he was a silly little child. And not just because the man was and continues to be Captain America, no. He didn’t care about the patriotic bullshit propaganda or the honorable and ‘good’ qualities the man possesses, or maybe he does, but in a very different light as he did as a naive and stupid kid.

He cares about the single-mind focus Steve had to lie through his teeth to enter into the army, to become a lab rat and risk it all to save almost 400 soldiers, alone might he add. Everything just because of one single man. James Buchanan “Bucky” Barnes. Friends since childhood they said, but…

It wasn’t just that. Was it? No, of course not. He knew exactly what Steve tried to hide so clumsily from the world. It made him laugh how no one was able to put two and two together -Maybe Romanov could, but he wasn’t interested in her opinion or input whatsoever-.

He greedily wanted it all. He wants those things -That drive, that devotion, that type of loyalty- for himself.

All Steve Rogers has to offer has to be Brock’s.

The only problem was that the man Steve adored so much in the 30s and 40s is still alive, not only in his mind, but in reality too. Maybe he is just a husk of the man Steve knew so long ago, a weapon more than a human being, but he is still fucking alive. And that pisses him off.

The worst thing is that he knows Rogers is interested in him too. He just knows it, he can see it everytime they have a mission together, Rogers eyes linger on him, and the way he interacts with Brock in compararison to others is night and day to just be nothing. But it never ends up going anywhere. Every time he flirts with the man, he doesn’t engage like he should. Maybe if Brock was too subtle he could understand the hesitation, Steve can be very oblivious sometimes, but no. Being more bold and aggressive in the lockers after a grueling mission doesn’t work either. The blond ends up stumbling away giving flimsy excuses, and when he is too bruised and contused to immediately run somewhere else, he starts using the wrong fucking name and Brock can’t enjoy himself. And it wouldn’t be so annoying if he didn’t have to try so hard to make Steve stop being so fucking shy all the damn time.

Ugh.

That’s why he’s more ruthless than he should be with the soldier when he’s on babysitter duty. He wants to make him bleed, make him suffer for his transgressions. The bastard will heal anyway, whats some more bruises and fractures in the grand scheme of things?

Nothing.

He will have zero consequences in damaging the asset, because the only thing Pierce cares about is that it is functional, and it can work perfectly well with some fractured fingers and bruised ribs. Even if it pisses the scientists off, it isn’t his problem. The asset can figure it out, that’s what its programming is for, after all.

He can’t erase it, him from Steve’s mind, not yet at least. And even less afford to kill the piece of shit anyway. He can’t understand why he’s so great and important to Steve, but it doesn’t matter. It won’t matter soon enough, he will make sure of it.

James Buchanan Barnes, The Winter Soldier, Asset, Soldat, Assassin, The fist of Hydra, or as he likes to be referred to by the blond man in his mind “Buck” does in fact remember most of his past memories, he can’t remember some specific things and moments, but he believes that’s overall normal. With all the wipes they did to his brain, there is going to be some inconsequential loses of course, so he isn’t that concerned by what he doesn’t remember. If he lost those memories, well… they weren’t that relevant to begin with. But for the most part, his mind is intact. What he lost maybe forever is well… the emotional connection to those memories and to the people in them. The capability of feeling much of… anything really is lost to him.

But oh well, what can you do, right?

He isn’t stupid enough to make his handlers know about it anymore. He did sometimes, before, but it always ended up the same -in the fucking chair, strapped down with a ridiculously annoying migraine that lasted for days-. So he stopped doing it sometime in the 60s. In the same vein, he knows what type of organization Hydra is, but he really doesn’t give a shit. Not really. He doesn’t have any good reason to escape anyway.

Even the blond man of his memories doesn’t make him feel much besides an irrational sense of possession. He knows the man -Steve,Steven, Stevie- is important, was the most important person for his past self in fact, he also knows they belong together, always did, always will because of their vow. He knows what it actually means-.

He sometimes thinks he should feel sad that the man died so soon and for something so stupid as believing he was saving his country. After all, Hydra was always going to infiltrate themselves into it, one way or another. That the same people that were fighting besides Rogers were the ones that welcomed their enemy with open arms, was just the icing on the cake. But in reality he doesn’t concerns himself with that. It isn’t relevant to him whatsoever.

He is just, so fucking pissed off, at Rogers for letting him fall and for dying not long after, with himself for not being more vigilant, for just following Rogers blindly into the jaws of death with the promise of being together until the end, but somehow, still being the only one that’s alive. He’s simply mad at everything, because nothing is how it is supposed to be.

So when the handler that loves to torture him while throwing petty insults that he thinks are oh so clever, thoughtlessly let it slip that his man -Stevie- is still alive… and after realizing what he said, the idiot instead of being scared or shutting up for his own good, doubles down, laughing at him and has the audacity to show him incriminating and irrefutable proof of his wrongdoings like they were treasures -the stupid fuck- oh well… taking Hydra to the ground never sounded better to Bucks ears, starting of course, by one stupidly cocky and talkative idiot.

Hydra didn’t have anything on him, the wipes never worked as they should, the torture did’t face him anymore -his nerves were fried anyways-. He wasn’t going to be lenient any longer.

And his Stevie? Oh, his Stevie…If he knew his man well -and he actually did, know him very well. Maybe in disconnected memories, but does it really matter? He knows him inside and out and thats the important thing here- He will fall for the brainwashed prisoner of war turned assassin act so, so beautifully, he just has to play his cards well to not tip off the widow or anyone else that could try to separate them again.

He can’t wait.
