Breaking out of Banal:

The Poltergeist

Dooms placed her long legs over the young woman next to her. Their eyes were all on the television. Another woman in the kitchen cooking, sticking her head out of the door, watching it when something seemed to catch her attention from the show playing. “Did he just say…-” The green skinned woman started to ask.

The normal redhead seemed to have very dark hair this day, and her pitch black eyes lean back. “You heard right.” She answered, going back to the show.

In middle of another sentence, an emergency news broadcast came onto the television. A hiss left the tall white haired woman’s lips before she glared at the loud noise. Then static as it flipped screens to big words saying across the screen “Breaking News,” the upbeat of the news station sounds it does at the beginning of the normal news castings.

”Just in, the riot at Buena Vista Correctional Complex is now under control. All of the inmates were escorted to their cells, and only a handful number of guards was injured. No deaths. The number of both inmates and guards are being counted up as we speak. Though there seem to be some inmates missing. Right now, the count is two, though they are still hopeful that the inmates haven’t gotten far from the Correctional Complex.”

“Bullshit! If I was stuck there I’d run away from it as fast as I could as soon as I could!” Charlie screamed from the kitchen.

“About how long ago did the riot started?” Kira asked, looking to Dooms. Dooms tapped her chin before holding up two fingers. “Two hours ago?” That made Dooms shake her head. “Days?” A nod was the answer. “Two days ago… Buena Vista is about a two-day walk from here.” Kira then mumbled, rubbing her eyes.

Charlie’s dark green skin seemed to start to pale, eyes wide. “Wait, what? The mountains! The mountains have always protected us, though!” Charlie declared, feeling a pillow hit her. “And Dooms of course.” A weak laugh left the green girl. “Hey, Kira, can you do your weird Death thingy and tell us if they are in our area?”

“No can do. It’s week of All Hallows Eve. The walls between the living and the dead are weak and with pure blood their powers increase, but half-blood decrease.” Kira stated.

That made Charlie confused for a moment. Her long pale nails tapping on the door frame. “Wait, you can’t die normally… without your powers… doesn’t that mean…-”

“My father can harvest my soul. Which is why I’m hiding out in the Mansion where Dooms can protect me.” Kira stated, eyes going back to the television just as the show was coming back on. Feeling a finger poked her cheek, Kira’s eyes shifted to the woman next to her. “Yes, darling, I am using you. Now get that finger away from my face before I bite it.” A moment passed and an annoyed look crossed Kira’s face. “Meant to be threatening, not kinky.”

Charlie popped her head over the edge of the couch. “Food’s done, Dooms sit back down,” Charlie stated, and commanded, watching the white-haired woman try to jump over the back of the couch. “If you lost your powers, why can you still read Dooms’ mind?”

Another annoyed sigh left Kira’s lips. Reaching over, grabbing Dooms’ arm and pulling up the long sleeve. “See that mark?” She asked, motioning to the dark mark… the one that was placed on her in the Nightmare realm when it was connected to the hellish world “It’s the mark of Death. My father placed it on her, for what I don’t know. Maybe he thinks she can be useful when his horsemen come, but either way, he has a link to her. Meaning I am linked to her. So our minds are easily connected. With or without my powers.”

That made Dooms face scrunched up. Charlie had the same question, though. “If he’s connected to her, does that mean he can read her mind too?”

“Only if they are in the same world or close enough in same realm, in which, he is not. Thankfully.” Kira stated, annoyed. She felt like she had to explain this to Dooms a thousand times, why hasn’t Charlie eavesdropped in on THAT conversation instead of the private ones!?

“You look annoyed… just in case your little flaming scythe thingy still can activate whenever you want… I’m going this way.” Charlie pointed to the kitchen, bolting to it. Dooms shrugged her shoulders, before jumping up to follow the green one.

Into the kitchen to get food, she could smell the meats that Charlie has cooked. It wasn’t just one or two, but multiple that the smells seemed too mixed together. That made it harder for Dooms to tell what was all cooked, without physically seeing it first.

Reaching for a plate for both Kira and herself, Charlie making a strangled squeaking noise stopped her. Raising a white eyebrow to the green skinned girl, Charlie’s amber eyes were looking out the window.

Spinning real fast to Dooms, fear in every fiber of her being, and radiating to Dooms annoyance. “Someone is outside.” Charlie squeaked.

Dooms rolled her eyes, she likes it more when Charlie is scared of rats and snakes. At least those are more interesting. Being scared of people is just stupid.

Walking to the kitchen door, she didn’t hear or see anything outside. “Do-ooo-oms!” The green woman whined, her skin shifting into a pale shade of green that resembles the sicking color of green almost.

Shoulders moving forward, the food was all but forgotten, as she went outside to check. If a killer is near her home it’d be one of her family members, no one else is brave enough to come out this way.

Searching around the place, a noise of protest left Dooms’ lips, before turning back around and going back inside. Shrugging her shoulders at Charlie.

Charlie fixed their plates while Dooms was outside, and handed one to Dooms, taking the other two to the living room. Sitting the second plate in front of Kira, Charlie took a bite of her food. Kira’s ears perked at a noise from outside, turning her head to look in that direction. “Dooms, go check that out,” Kira commanded, her eyes darker than they should be.

Dooms had a fork hanging out of her mouth, frown across her lips, and annoyance in her eyes. A whine and pointing at her food, in protest. “Dooms, please.” Kira’s voice held something that Dooms has never heard in the woman’s voice before… fear.

Standing up with her plate, stuffing as much food into her mouth as she could, before walking to see what the noise was. Though stopping in the kitchen, Dooms wondered.

Who locked the kitchen door?

She turned to look into the living room where Charlie was curled up under a blanket eyes darting all which ways. Kira was watching television again.

Dooms was sure she was the only one near the kitchen door, so who would lock it? Charlie didn’t come up behind her, she left the kitchen before Dooms did too. Didn’t she?

Shaking her head clear, Dooms reached for her sword, walking around the kitchen carefully. No one would have left the kitchen without Dooms or Kira noticing. So if someone else was in the house, they wouldn’t have gotten past them by leaving the kitchen.

The kitchen connects straight to the living room, and only to the living room. Living room on other hand connected to multiple rooms…

Shaking her head, Dooms didn’t see anyone, no matter what part of the kitchen she looked. Walking back into the living room. Eyes twitching… A growl left Dooms lips.

Her plate was empty.

“Dooms, you ate really fast,” Charlie stated, still under the blanket.

That made Kira looked to the plate confused, before up to Dooms. “I thought you only took a couple big bites, not eat the whole thing.

Snatching the plate up, Dooms went into the kitchen to make another one.

Into the kitchen, she saw a shadow moving outside. Stopping in her track, Dooms watched the shadow with interest.

Maybe Charlie wasn’t being paranoid.

Grabbing her sword again, she walked to the door, stopping. It was unlocked now. Annoyance crossed her features… someone was playing with her mind. It was bad enough that her own mind plays with itself, but it angers her when others do.

Playing with itself… kinky.

No time for games!

But games are fun.

Hopeless.

But it is kinky.

Shaking her head clear, Dooms tried to ignore the three voices. Outside, she went searching for the source of the madness. Plate forgot next to the food.

Kira heard the kitchen door opened again, and looked into the kitchen to see Dooms walk out of it. “Weird.” She stated, standing up. “I’m getting something to drink, would you like some?” Kira asked, looking to Charlie who looked comfortable under the blanket.

“No, thank you,” Charlie mumbled, going deeper into the blanket. As if that would protect her from the horrors of the world.

That made the half Death roll her eyes.

Stopping in mid-step, the creature of multi realms looked about.

Something felt off. It wasn’t just the eery night either.

“Mind telling me about Mephisto?” Charlie’s voice knocked Kira out of her thoughts.

Grabbing a drink from the fridge, she walked back to the living room and plopping down. “What is it to know about him? He is one of the many devils.” Kira stated taking a swing of the drink.

That made Charlie roll her amber eyes. “I mean, what is he like? I mean he’s your father, wouldn’t you know?”

An annoying sound left Kira’s lips. “He’s a real asshole,” Kira stated, eyes glancing down to the drink in her hand. “He tricked the Mistress to take human form and then made her carry me for nine months. After the Mistress found out I couldn’t crossover to the Death Realm with her, she left me here, to be raised by a mortal. Granted the mortal was way more of a parent than either of them…-” That made Charlie flinch. “The Mistress did love me, though. I think she still does.” That made Kira looked to the corner of the room. The scythe leaned against the wall and was waiting for her. “She gave me my scythe, and my powers to predict death, but she can’t stop me from dying myself. The immortality would have only been blessed upon me if I was born in either Father’s Realm or Death Realm. Neither of which I was.” That made the woman stand up, walking away.

Charlie then felt bad. She should have never brought up Kira’s heritage. That made the green woman groaned.

The noises from upstairs then made her yelp. “Kira!” She screeched, running in the same direction as Kira was heading. “Kira?” Charlie called, pulling the covers tighter over her. “Kira?!” Charlie whined, not seeing the Death Seer.

“What are you screeching about now?” Kira asked, coming out of the side room that leads to the basement.

“Someone is upstairs! I heard footsteps upstairs.” She stated, pulling the covers around her tighter.

The dark-haired woman groaned, before looking to the stairs not far from them. “Doubtful,” Kira stated, listening for the…

The squeaking board gave it away.

“Fuck.” Kira groaned. “DOOMS! GET YOUR ASS DOWN HERE AND STOP PLAYING GAMES!” Kira snapped, tired of the charade.

The noise happened again, then things started to fly around the room. “Kira, I don’t think it’s Dooms.” Charlie yelped, feeling her back hit someone else’s back. The dark haired and eyed woman looked each way for the source of the strangeness. Something had to be gravitating the objects.

Kicking the back of Charlie’s knee. She fell forward onto the knee that was knocked out. Kira then dodged the vase that was heading for them. A loud crashing noise into the wall.

“What’s going on?” Charlie whimpered, crawling to Kira who was laying on the ground.

A noise of annoyance left the woman’s lips. “Ghosts.” She stated sitting up. “Or psychic. We have crossed both before.”

A groan left Charlie before Kira grabbed the green one’s arm and pulled her over Kira’s body. Landing on her back from the powerful jerk, Kira rolled herself on top of the green one. Just as a chandelier fell.

Before either of the women could say a word, the whole house was engulfed in darkness.

A noise of annoyance left Kira as she got up. Before able to walk away she felt the tug of her shirt and Charlie trying to use the slightly older as a shield. Kira couldn't stop the roll of her starless night eyes.

They made their way into the kitchen where Charlie stored the flashlights and candles.

Jumping at any little noise, Charlie tried to ignore anything around her. It was harder to act like stone, like how Kira was than Charlie expected. Though one thing seemed to popped in Charlie’s mind.

“Why is it hard to scare you and Dooms?” Charlie asked, in hopes to distract herself.

A shrug was all Charlie got in reply. That made the shifter annoyed at the half demon and death. She might be normally immortal being that is cursed to live with mortals, but she is still a being that should be kinder to her friends!

A voice seemed to call Charlie and the annoyance forgotten. “Where is your flaming scythe thingy?” Charlie whimpered, trying to use Kira as a shield again.

“Living room,” Kira answered pulling out the flashlights, that didn't want to work.

Seeing someone move outside of the window, Charlie grabbed the closest weapon near her… A kitchen knife.

Seeing something else in the living room, Charlie jumped back and looked to Kira. The near immortal’s pure black eyes made it hard to figure out where she is looking at.

Feeling a cool breeze and smell of jasmines that Dooms and Kira planted around the mansion. It was a way the two beings of death could bring life into the world. Charlie never bothered questioning it… But now she's going to request they pick a new hobby.

“Kira, did you unlock and opened the window?” Charlie asked fear seeped into her voice as her spine stiffens from the cold.

“No,” Kira answered calmly.

Taking a couple steps forward,Charlie went into the pantry before curling up into a ball on the floor. “Light me a candle, close the door, leave me be until morning please,” Charlie stated not bringing her eyed out of her knees. She refused to open her eyes or acknowledged anything else going on.

Kira tried to hold back the amused smile, before hearing screaming voices. Too far to hear the argument, Kira refused to leave Charlie.

The shifter isn't as good in defense as Kira or Dooms. The knife she grabbed wouldn't do her much good if she had to defend herself for the same reason.

A deep breath, Kira heard the window squeak as it closed and then the door opening. Not able to move fast enough, Charlie bolted past her and stabbed the intruder in the chest.

The hot blood sprayed Charlie in the face, but the body didn't fall.

Staring down at the knife in her chest the white-haired woman starts shaking with silent laughter. “Oh my god, I’m sorry!” Charlie gasped, going wide-eyed at stabbing her friend and someone that could easily kill her. “I thought you were an intruder! Please don't kill me!” The shifter pleaded for her life.

Feeling a patting on top of the head, Charlie looked up with fearful eyes to see the white haired woman’s big smile. “Only Dooms would find amusement in being stabbed. Good thing it wasn’t the heart, you missed it.” Kira stated, in a bored tone.

That made Kira looked to where the knife still was. The blood on her hands wasn’t as much, till Dooms placed her hands on top of the green one’s and pulled the knife out. Blood shot out of her. Landing on Charlie’s face since the green one was still so close to the white haired one.

Dooms poked at the sore skin as it stitched itself back together before up to the big eyes of Charlie. Her face had a splatter of blood on it, and it seemed to have sent her into a panic, in her head instead of freaking out over Dooms being stabbed.

Waving her hand in front of the green-skinned girl, nothing seemed to come through. Looking to Kira who shrugged her shoulders. Seems like neither of them really understand the shifter before them.

Before either could react, Charlie bolted from the room. Dooms heard voices from another room, dropping the knife on the floor before shifting her sword from its sheath on her back. She rushed forward to protect Charlie from the invader.

Rolling her pitch black eyes, Kira followed the hit-woman. Into the living room, and then followed the taller to the bathroom that was down the hall from where the chandelier fell. Dooms didn’t even seem to notice it at first, too worried about the defenseless Charlie.

The door opened, ignoring the no electricity, Charlie was trying to wash the blood off of her face.

A shudder left the green one before turning to Dooms, who was looking all which way. Seeing the chandelier, Dooms turned to Kira with a confused look.

“I believe we have a ghost. Probably multiple since this is a graveyard.” Kira explained, flopping down on a step leading up the stairs. “The veil between worlds are thinning, they are probably leaking over from one of the many hells that take souls,” Kira explained, eyes darting to the darkness that was starting to seem to take over space around them.

Dooms noticing that the light in the room was coming from a candle that Kira was holding. Trying to remember when the woman had gotten a candle, much less light it since they ran from the kitchen.

Shaking her head, she was sure she was overthinking things. They had to concentrate on what was at hand.

On your hand?

No at hand!

What’s the difference? Why would something be on her hand?

Ugh. You make no sense.

“What would make the spirits leave?” Charlie asked, her voice shaking and eyes refusing to look up from the sink.

Kira seemed to be thinking while looking out to the darkness around them.

Is the darkness getting darker? How is that possible!?

Paranoia.

The third voice was back, making Dooms look around real fast as if someone else was in the room with them. Kira raised her eyebrow at Dooms, who was looking for someone that wasn’t with them.

Taking a deep breath, Dooms tried to think about what was what at hand than the voices that won’t shut up in her head. “There are many ways to get rid of them, but if I am correct then once the veil is closing again, then they will be trapped where they came from,” Kira answered, making Dooms raise her eyebrow at Kira. “Most is like that, but there are cases that aren't what happens. So, for now, we just have to wait this out.”

Dooms eyes looked out to the darkness, seeing a figure that walked across the room that was on the other end of the hall. The room at the front of the house, that seems to connect everything downstairs together. That person didn’t look like a ghost, but rather a human walking around her home.

Not sure what to do, not wanting to kill someone and freak Charlie out more, Dooms ran forward tackling the person. For a moment the elderly face that looked shocked seemed to go transparent, and Dooms crashed. The cold floor was what greeted her. Glaring up at the elderly woman before her, Dooms held up a hand that had the only sign language that everyone knows what means.

Middle finger up, rest of the fingers down.

Now she was calm and thinking clearer, and watching the ghost before her, she took a deep breath through her nose. The smell of fresh dirt, rain, and something that reminded Dooms of pine burning. It wasn’t smoke smell, but she didn’t know how to describe it.

“Dooms?” Charlie called walking forward, not seeing the person Dooms was looking straight at. “Dooms, you okay?” Charlie wondered, moving to the white-haired woman. Kira wasn’t far behind Charlie, seeming to sense the spirit, but not see her.

Glaring at the spirit that Dooms could see, the white-haired woman got up and headed to the kitchen. Her food was eaten before she could eat it, and she was getting grouchy and more hungry.

Charlie looked to Kira confused, which got a shrug from Kira but nothing else.

Both of them followed Dooms to the kitchen. Dooms just flopped down on the counter in the kitchen with her plate and a drink. Eating and ignoring everyone around her. Let the spirits run wild, as long as they don’t hurt Kira or Charlie, Dooms wouldn’t give a damn.

The lights flickered till they came back on fully, and then the television in the other room. “The missing convicts have been caught.” Was heard from the living room. Kira blew out the flame on the candle, before going into the living room.

Silver eyes stayed on the half death, the scythe by the couch had a dark crystal in it. It looked like a night starry sky, while Kira’s look night’s starless sky.

“Kira, what was that?” Charlie asked, her body shaking from what Dooms could assume was fear.

The half death stopped, looking back to Charlie confused. “What was what?” Kira asked, raising an eyebrow at Charlie.

The shifter’s finger went up, pointing at Kira’s scythe. The half death looked to it before she saw what Charlie did, but Dooms didn’t understand what was wrong. “It has never done that before,” Kira stated, picking up the scythe.

Jumping up, Dooms moved forward to see what they were talking about. The food still hanging out of her mouth, but Dooms didn’t really care. Eating the rest of it with one bite, she looked to what they were talking about.

The dark stone in Kira’s scythe, Dooms didn’t know much about it, just that Kira’s mother gave it to her. Kira’s mother was someone that Dooms wanted to meet but was nervous to meet. Not that Dooms is scared of Death, either the actual thing or person who gave birth to Kira. No, that’s not the case at all, but she is scared of having to leave this world for the unknown.

Shaking her head clear, Dooms tried to figure out what the two was freaking out about. Charlie’s freak out with outward where the other two can see it, Kira, mentally and Dooms knew about it.

The stone’s spots that remind Dooms of stars were colorful, they were like rainbows flicking and being as beautiful as always.

“What does that mean?” Charlie squeaked, really not wanting to die because of something she doesn’t know. She has seen a lot of weird stuff since Dooms has saved her, so the stone freaking out and killing everyone wouldn’t be a surprise.

Kira took a breath, finger softly touching the stone. Eyes closed, and hair seemed to go darker. “I don’t understand this,” Kira mumbled, before opening her pure black eyes, and then turned her head to Dooms and Charlie. “It shouldn’t be doing this. Last time it did this was when my mother was near.”

“There is a lot of spirits around, maybe that’s what causing it. Doesn’t Death rule over the realm of spirits and death?” Charlie suggested, trying to make it make sense.

Kira shrugged her shoulders, eyes glancing down to the beautiful stone before her.

Placing the scythe back down, she turned to do something that Dooms wasn’t curious about. Instead, Dooms reached out, the tip of her fingers tapped the stone before her eyes seemed to widened.

In the back of Dooms mind, she could see a woman figure, but couldn’t make out any details on her. Then she saw flashes of faces and figures that it was hard for her to understand. The very end was a simple M with a refreshing sign around it.

Shaking her head, Dooms couldn’t figure out what that was about, but the shining colors seemed to drift away. “It stopped,” Charlie stated, confused and calmer now.

The noises around them still haven’t stopped. Conversations they couldn’t hear clearly, people moving and walking around. Banging noises and hearing someone walking around.

Dooms just ignored it all trying to figure out what was going on in her own head. Charlie cuddled close to Dooms for protection, and Kira was looking for something in what Dooms would have to assume is the library. Dooms really don't go in there unless she has to get Kira or Charlie for something. That’s where Kira is normally found.

An annoying sound left her lips before she flopped backward on the couch and startled Charlie who was leaning on her. A shrug was all Charlie got from Dooms before Dooms fell asleep. Her dreams were plagued with things she has never done and the mysterious figured that was too far from Dooms’ sight.
