Work Text:
Penelope stood under the only cover available anywhere near where she’d parked her car. Usually, she’d be able to park underground and avoid any adverse weather, but an unfortunate combination of some building improvements being scheduled at the same time as a sudden influx of new recruits meant that there were days when she had to park a little further away and walk.
She glared at the sky and wondered hopelessly if it was likely to clear up anytime soon or if she’d just have to abandon her dignity and make a run for it. She hoped not, she wasn’t wearing the right shoes for it. Actually, she wasn’t wearing the right anything for it. She cursed her decision to wear her pretty white dress today, even if it was a new favourite.
“You know, it’s all fun and games until someone forgets their umbrella.”
Penelope let out a snort of laughter as she turned to look behind her.
“Please tell me that you’re here to rescue the fair maiden from her plight.”
“Of course, princess,” Derek said, drawing up next to her and holding his umbrella high over them both. “I wouldn’t want you to get your pretty dress all wet.”
“My sweet prince,” Penelope sighed, looking miserably out at the heavy rain. “This is not the day to be out fighting crime. We should all be at home in our beds, not out here battling the elements.”
“Battling the elements?” he echoed with a laugh. “From what I can see, you’re just standing here in the shade delaying the inevitable.”
“Oh, but it’s always so cold in my office, I couldn’t risk getting all wet and giving the whole office a show.”
“A show?”
“Wet plus cold, Derek,” Penelope said, her hand flying in front of her chest and incidentally nearly taking him out with her handbag. “Do I need to draw you a picture?”
Derek obligingly looked down at her chest and then back up at her face.
“I think I can draw my own, baby,” he murmured, taking a step closer to her and offering his arm. “But thanks for the offer.”
She slid her free hand through the crook in his arm and tried to match her steps to his as they walked out into the downpour. She winced when she stepped into a puddle that was much deeper than she’d anticipated and then groaned when water splashed up against her ankles.
“It is not my day,” she muttered, taking some small solace in the warmth of his body next to hers.
“You got any spare clothes at the office?” Derek asked, guiding her carefully around another suspicious looking puddle.
“Yes,” Penelope said shortly, “but I’d still rather just go home. Play hooky.”
“And leave your man all alone to face the horrors of the day? I know you won’t do me like that, baby girl.”
“We could both play hooky!”
“Garcia—” Derek began with a laugh.
“Come on, no one would have seen us yet! What’s the harm?”
“You don’t think Hotch will be just a little suspicious if we both call in sick at the same time?”
Penelope pouted and turned her body into his, not above employing every means at her disposal to get her way.
“Just think how nice it would be to at home right now,” she whispered, pressing her breasts against his arm. “We could snuggle up together on the couch and watch some movies.”
“Yeah?”
“Maybe even just go back to bed,” she said, lifting an eyebrow suggestively. “Give up on the day entirely.”
Derek opened his mouth to answer when the sound of running footsteps approaching behind them made him turn abruptly, already at full alert.
“Hurry up, you guys!” Reid shouted as he ran past them. “We’re already running late for the briefing!”
Penelope and Derek watched him run, his satchel held protectively over his head as the rain fell heavily all around him.
“How is that the two smartest people on our team both forgot their umbrellas?” Derek asked.
“I can’t speak for boy genius over there, but my mind was taken up by much more important things this morning.”
He smiled down at her, remembering the way she had woken him that morning. It had been a very good morning, indeed.
“So how come I was able to remember my umbrella?”
“Simple, you’re always looking for ways to be closer to me. I’m onto you, Derek Morgan.”
Derek laughed and leaned down to press a quick kiss to her lips.
“You got me, baby. Now, let’s get inside before Hotch sends someone out to find us.”
With one last regretful sigh, Penelope agreed and resumed her damp trudge towards the office. One day, she would convince Derek to play hooky with her, even if she had to tie him to the bed in order to achieve it.
Brightening at the thought, she barely noticed when she stepped in another puddle. Her day was already looking up.
