Work Text:
Ah, love. Surely the strongest of forces, whether conscious or not.
Since she was little, Apple White had been taught that love was something fixed, certain, something that could never be changed. Her story, her legacy, her destiny as the future Snow White had always shown her that she was meant to be awakened by true love’s kiss.
Her Prince Charming, mounted upon his white steed, was meant to wake her from her glass coffin after countless seasons of slumber. And then, they would live happily ever after.
She and Daring Charming, her prince, her true love.
But what Apple White had never expected was that true love would reveal itself in a completely different way.
Love did not make her plan for the future, it made her live in the present. It asked for nothing in return; it was simply there, waiting for her, just as she found herself waiting for it.
Love sent shivers racing from head to toe. It made her wake each morning with a soft smile upon her lips, made her smile at the most inconvenient times over the smallest, most fleeting details.
Love was beautiful. It had bright, shining eyes, so blue and deep that Apple could not tell whether she was gazing into the sky or into the depths of a well. Love had sun-kissed skin, as if the sunlight itself had claimed it. Love had platinum blonde hair that fell in soft waves over the most perfectly sculpted shoulders she had ever seen. And that smile… a smile capable of knocking men from their horses, stealing sighs from princesses, and disarming knights as if they had never known how to fight at all.
Darling Charming seemed like the very embodiment of love. She made Apple want to savor every moment of every day, showed her that even the smallest details mattered, always greeted her with the most beautiful of smiles, a smile not even her brother could rival.
And not long ago, Apple remembered it vividly, Darling had invited her for a picnic, something sweet, something romantic… though it had ended in an unexpected way.
Ah, Apple could still feel the shiver that ran through her at the memory of the smile that curved along Darling’s rosy lips as she knelt, a simple yet beautiful ring held between her fingers. She remembered the way her heart pounded against her chest when Darling took her hand, looked deep into her eyes, and, in that voice that made her melt entirely, asked if Apple White would be hers.
And truly, who could ever refuse the chance to fall into those arms, to cradle that face carved as though from marble, to press a kiss against lips as soft as silk?
In that very moment, Apple knew that was her destiny. To be held by that woman, to kiss her, to run her fingers through her hair, to rest her head upon her shoulder, to look into her eyes and know, without a doubt, that Darling was hers, and nothing could ever change that.
And what could be more romantic than to seal it all on the True Hearts Day, a tradition revived after years buried in oblivion?
In just a few hours, everyone would be celebrating love, their destinies, their romantic legacies. Even Daring, who seemed to have changed entirely after the “incident” with the Snow King the previous winter.
Apple could not blame him. She, too, would have changed if she had turned into a fearsome beast.
In truth, she already had.
Especially because of Raven. Not even a thousand apologies nor all the tears Apple had shed would ever be enough to make amends with her friend. And so, as she did with everything in her life, Apple set herself a task, simple in its form, yet profound in its meaning.
To mend the mistakes she had made with her friends. From judging Ashlynn for loving Hunter Huntsman, to never once asking Briar how she had been through it all.
Yes, even if it took time, she would earn her redemption. Even if her pride suffered in the process, even if none of them accepted her apologies.
It did not matter. As a future queen, she had to do this.
And as a friend, and as a person, she needed to.
That morning, with everyone buzzing about and rushing from one side to the other with preparations for True Hearts Day, Apple quickly offered to help Cupid and the rest of her friends set up the ballroom.
“I still can’t believe you talked me into this.” Briar said with a yawn. “And we still have classes later, Apple. For Grimm’s sake.”
“Oh, stop it. You wouldn’t like it if we went without you. Besides, I’m sure it’ll be fun.”
“Everything has been fun for you lately.”
“We finally have a little peace!” Apple replied, a bright smile spreading across her lips. “No queens trying to destroy our world, no issues with our destinies. Everything is fine.”
“Sometimes I wish I had your optimism.”
“It’s not optimism, it’s just-“
Apple froze where she stood.
Her heart began to pound against her ribs, her face warmed, and her hands tingled. Near the lockers, chatting with Cerise Hood, Darling looked absolutely breathtaking.
Her smile overflowed with happiness, her lips soft and rosy, her cheeks flushed a delicate red, Apple had learned by now that whenever Darling laughed or felt even slightly embarrassed, her cheeks would tint that same shade.
She wore pieces of her knight’s armor, the pauldrons, the chainmail, the sheath at her side. She looked simply stunning.
“…Hellooo! Apple, are you even on this world?”
Apple snapped back to reality when Briar waved a hand in front of her face, a teasing grin spreading across her lips.
“See? You really have been happier lately! Who would’ve thought Darling Charming would have that effect on you?”
“She doesn’t have any effect on me.” Apple shot back, her face burning. It was obvious Darling had an effect on her, one so natural and overwhelming that Apple could barely control it. “I just like having her around!”
“Apple, please. She’s your girlfriend. Admit it, you go all soft whenever you see her.”
Apple couldn’t help but smile.
So that was how all the girls felt when Daring smiled at them? That shiver down her spine, that tingling at her lips, was that normal? Was that how Raven felt every time Dexter adjusted his glasses in front of her?
She quickly shook her head, remembering Raven’s expression whenever she looked at her boyfriend. If Apple ever ended up like that, mouth slightly open, eyes wide, it would be utterly embarrassing.
“All right… maybe a little.” she admitted. “She just makes me… flustered.”
“As if making Apple White flustered were easy.” Briar laughed. Then, without warning, she grabbed Apple and began dragging her toward Darling and Cerise.
As they drew closer, Apple grew increasingly flustered. And the moment Darling fixed those blue orbs on her, the whole world seemed to slow. Her pupils dilated, and those soft, almost puppy-like eyes shone brighter than ever.
Apple didn’t settle for just a smile, she ran forward, her heels clicking against the wooden floor, until she found herself in Darling’s arms. They were firm around her waist, pulling her close as if she were made of glass. Her touch was warm, intense even in its gentleness. Apple slipped her arms around her girlfriend’s neck, and when they parted, she rested her hands on her shoulders.
“Good morning, Your Majesty.” Darling said.
“Good morning.” Apple replied with a wide smile. “Why are you dressed like that?”
“Oh, right, yes.” Darling rested her hands on her girlfriend’s hips and pulled back slightly to get a better look at her face. “I was on my way to the day’s jousting practice with Dexter.”
“Jousting? Now? Darling, what about the True Hearts Day preparations?”
“See?” Cerise chimed in with a hint of smugness, crossing her arms as she leaned against the lockers. “I told you she wouldn’t like it.”
Darling simply rolled her eyes at her friend before meeting Apple’s gaze again.
“I promised Dexter I’d help him with today’s joust. And, well… maybe he talked a little too much.”
“What do you mean?”
“Oh, you know.”
“Let me guess,” Briar said. “The White Knight is showing up at practice today.”
“Told you!” Cerise laughed. “You’re so predictable, Charming.”
“Thank you, Cerise, for your very helpful commentary…” Darling teased. “But Dexter’s already told half the school.”
“Oh, Darling, please!” Apple whined. “You’ll be one of the few princesses not helping with the preparations!”
“I’m sorry, love.” Darling said. “But being your charming princess will have to wait a little while.”
Apple knew insisting would get her nowhere. Darling, just like her, was far too stubborn to change her mind. So, still pouting, she rolled her eyes and relented.
“Well, in the end, you’ll be the one missing all the fun.”
“Trust me, Apple,” Cerise began, “there’s no greater fun for Darling than disarming Daring in a proper joust.”
“You’re so annoying.” Darling said.
Apple heard her girlfriend groan, though it didn’t sound like frustration at all. It was obvious she’d much rather draw her sword than stay behind with the other princesses.
Disappointed as she was, Apple accepted defeat. She wasn’t about to argue with her girlfriend on the eve of True Hearts Day. She just hoped she’d get to spend some time with Darling after weeks of nonstop studying.
“Well, have fun then.” Apple said with a restrained smile. “We’ll be in the ballroom if you feel like stopping by.”
“I’ll be there as soon as training’s over.” Darling, at least a head taller than her, leaned down to press a kiss to her cheek. “Charm you later.”
Apple and Briar stood there, watching as Darling and Cerise walked away, trading teasing remarks and quiet laughter.
“Look on the bright side,” Briar started. “Your girlfriend is dedicated.”
“She’s going to have to choose eventually. Being the White Knight and the Charming Princess at the same time is impossible.”
“Give her time, Apple. Balancing two destinies can’t be easy.”
“That’s exactly why she needs to choose. Now come on.” Apple looped her arm through Briar’s and led her toward the ballroom, where the preparations for True Hearts Day were underway. “The girls must be waiting for us.”
As soon as they stepped into the ballroom, they found a group of girls already there, surrounded by stacks upon stacks of boxes at their feet.
Nothing had been set up yet, except for the enormous speaker near the stage. Not even balloons, streamers, or any kind of decoration had been put in place.
“And here I was thinking we were late.” Briar whispered under her breath.
“Good morning, girls.” Apple greeted, watching as her friends turned toward them.
Seated in a loose circle of chairs, Ashlynn, Holly, Poppy, Raven, and even Rosabella were deep in conversation.
“Good morning!” Holly chimed, her smile wide enough to split her cheeks.
“We thought you weren’t coming!” Poppy added.
“We had to make a little stop first…” Briar teased, clearing her throat dramatically.
Apple rolled her eyes, catching the tone in her friend’s voice.
“Oh, yes. It took me a while to wake Briar up.”
“I told her she should’ve come early with me.” Ashlynn said.
Ignoring Briar’s protests, Apple moved to stand beside Raven.
“Where is everyone else?”
“We were wondering the same thing. Even the party planner hasn’t shown up yet.”
“We think Cupid is picking up the rest of the decorations.” Poppy said. “Which, honestly, feels a bit excessive.”
“No such thing as too much decoration, sis. Just look at the size of this place!” Holly argued.
“Holly’s right, the more, the better.” Ashlynn agreed.
“Then why don’t we start setting things up already?” Briar suggested.
“That was exactly the debate before you got here,” Rosabella said, pulling her Mirrorpad from her bag. “We could start with the stage, since Raven is here.”
“Yes, but what about Melody?” she asked. “I’m sure she’ll want to use the stage.”
“Oh, Raven, what about your performances?” Ashlynn said with a playful smile. “I’m sure Melody won’t mind sharing a speaker or two.”
“You don’t actually expect me to perform for all of you at the party, do you?”
Raven looked around at her friends, who all stared right back at her. Apple, for one, would love to see Raven perform with her guitar. It would certainly be better than Sparrow Wood in every possible way.
Raven rolled her eyes when their silence gave her the answer.
“Why don’t we work on something else for now, hm?”
“We could start with the ceiling,” Rosabella suggested, glancing back at her Mirrorpad. “There’s no party without a disco ball!”
“She’s right,” Holly said, quickly getting to her feet and looking toward Apple. “We could ask the boys to help with that.”
“They’re at jousting practice.” Rosabella reminded her.
“Don’t even get me started,” Raven muttered. “Coach Gingerbreadman is being brutal with them. Dexter told me he made them do a hundred push-ups in three minutes.”
Apple felt something tighten in her throat. This was what Darling had been getting into? Up until now, she had tried to convince herself there was nothing wrong with Darling choosing training over staying with her, but this? This was unacceptable. Darling was a princess, even if she was also a knight. Training like that would exhaust her.
Just the thought made Apple feel sick. More than anything, she didn’t want to see Darling worn out like that.
“And where’s Darling?” Poppy asked. “I’m sure she wouldn’t mind helping us with the heavier decorations. No offense, Raven, I know you could just use your powers.”
Raven shrugged and looked at Apple, just like the rest of them.
Wonderful, Apple thought. Her girlfriend was probably doing who-knows-how-many push-ups right now.
“She’s not coming,” Apple said. “She’s with Dexter… at practice.”
“Oh…!” Poppy exclaimed, her face flushing. “Uh… well, good for her, I guess.”
A smile crept onto Raven’s lips, a faint blush coloring her cheeks.
“Dexter did mention she’d be helping him.”
“Dexter, huh?” a voice chimed from the ballroom entrance.
The girls turned just as Blondie and Cupid walked in, arms full of more boxes overflowing with decorations. Blondie held her Mirrorpad up toward them, her grin wide and eager.
“What do you have to say about Dexter Charming, Raven?”
Blondie practically glued herself to Raven, her smile growing even wider.
Apple could practically feel the heat rising up Raven’s neck as a deep blush spread across her pale face.
“No comment.” Raven said curtly.
“Oh, Raven, don’t be modest!” Briar teased with a giggle. “We all know you and Dexter are together.”
“It’s not official, okay?!”
“He needs to gather some courage already.” Poppy said, looping an arm around Raven’s shoulders. “Or does he think you’d say no to those eyes?”
“Girls, could we maybe-“
“Wait, he still hasn’t made it official?” Holly interrupted Cupid, her voice rising. “I thought you were already dating!”
“Well, if you count picnics as dating…” Rosabella added with a teasing tone.
Apple felt her cheeks warm. Rosabella wasn’t the kind of girl who cared about dates or what people thought of her, but honestly, Apple couldn’t understand how Daring had fallen head over heels for her. She didn’t seem like his type at all.
At least, not that Apple knew.
“And what about you, Rosabella?” Apple asked. “Hasn’t Daring taken you on a picnic yet?”
“That’s strange.” Blondie cut in, shifting her focus to Rosabella. “Daring Charming hasn’t asked you out?”
“What?!” Rosabella exclaimed, a little louder than necessary. “That’s not what I said!”
“So you have gone on a date?” Raven arched a brow, a smirk forming on her lips.
“I don’t know! If you count saving the world from a forever after winter, then yes!”
“Wait, he didn’t ask you out after you turned him back from a beast?” Cupid gasped, as if personally offended. “That’s outrageous!”
“Technically, I wasn’t the one who turned him back…”
“Yes, you were!” Blondie insisted, finally lowering her Mirrorpad with a confident look. “Come on, Bella, if it weren’t for you, Daring would still be coughing up furballs.”
Rosabella lowered her gaze, flustered. Apple followed every second of that journey through Blondie’s broadcasts about the adventure with Crystal. Stuck at school, she hadn’t felt useful at all while her friends suffered at the hands of Jack Frost and North Wind. And yes, even she, who hadn’t been there, could see how much influence Rosabella had had on Daring… and on the kind of beast he had become.
Perhaps Apple had been a little too harsh on Rosabella, after all.
“Well, you’re in the minority.” she muttered. “Daring probably doesn’t see it that way.”
“He definitely does, Bella.” Raven concluded, now wearing a reassuring smile.
“Trust me, Rosabella, Daring would never forget the face of someone who saved him, and not the other way around.”
“Apple’s right,” Cupid added as Apple placed a hand on Rosabella’s shoulder. She understood perfectly how the princess felt. “Daring probably goes to sleep thinking about it.”
“By Grimm, and here I was thinking you two were already dating.” Holly said, resting her elbows on her knees as she sat back down, chin sinking into her palms. “At least we’re all in the same boat, right?”
“Holly, don’t worry, your prince must be out there somewhere.” Ashlynn said, tucking a red strand of her friend’s hair behind her ear and placing a hand on her back. “Besides, relationships aren’t always all flowers.”
“You say that because you’re dating, Ash.” Poppy shot back.
“Well, Apple’s dating too. She can confirm.”
Once again, all eyes turned to Apple. She wasn’t usually one to feel flustered under attention, but now, for reasons entirely unrelated to her usual charming beauty, she felt heat crawl up her neck to her cheeks.
“Y-yeah, well… I don’t know.” she stammered.
“What do you mean you don’t know?” Briar nudged her shoulder lightly. “You practically fainted just looking at Darling.”
“Briar!”
“Our little inconvenience has a name, you know.”
Despite Apple’s protests, the girls burst into laughter.
“So, Apple, what about her?” Ashlynn asked. “You never tell us anything about your relationship anymore.”
“It’s going well, I think.”
“Oh, Apple, come on! Give us the details!” Blondie urged.
That was all it took for the girls to fall silent, their full attention fixed on Apple, and on the deepening blush across her cheeks.
What was she supposed to say? Darling was a princess. Not just literally. The way she treated Apple, the way she held her hand to help her up, offered her arm when they descended the stairs, the way she pressed soft kisses to her forehead or cheek when they met and parted…
“Apple!” Raven called out with a laugh. “If you’d like to share your thoughts…”
“I don’t have anything to say.” Apple stammered. “Darling is an excellent girlfriend.”
“Does she take you places?” Blondie asked. “Do you go on dates?”
“Yes.”
“Does she hug you often?” Poppy chimed in.
“Yes.”
“Does she kiss you?” Holly grinned. “Like, often?”
“Yes.”
“Is she a good kisser?”
“Yes. Wait- I- Raven!” Apple groaned, crossing her arms as the girls laughed.
“It’s okay, Apple.” Rosabella reassured her. “We’re not judging.”
“Or trying to take notes.” Poppy added, nudging her sister as Holly rolled her eyes.
“Darling seems like an amazing girl, Apple.” Cupid said warmly. “We’re happy for you.”
“Seriously, you’ve got it better than most of us. No need to be shy.” Briar said, looping her arm through Apple’s and pulling her closer. “Now, why don’t we keep this discussion going?”
“Uh, Briar… what about the decorations?” Cupid raised her brows, hands on her hips.
“The decorations can wait a bit. Don’t tell me you, of all people, the love guru, don’t want to hear about relationships?”
Cupid glanced around uncertainly before flicking her gaze to Raven, then lowering her eyes.
“I don’t know, Briar…”
“Come on, Cupid.” Holly said with a smile. “You could give us some advice!”
“Maybe you could teach Raven how to be a little more… provocative.” Apple teased, earning a sharp glare from her friend.
“Yeah, Cupid. Maybe your tips could get Apple to stop stuttering every time she sees Darling.”
“I do not stutter!”
“Alright, alright!” Cupid cut in. “Grimm, if I’d known this would turn into group therapy…”
The girls settled into their chairs, soon distracting themselves by pulling decorations out of the boxes.
“So, Ash,” Blondie began, “what about you and Hunter?”
“We’re great! I mean… aside from a few issues with my mother.”
“Your mother? What happened?” Raven asked, a hint of unease in her voice, as if the mere mention of a mother was still a sensitive subject. Apple wished she could comfort her, but she felt just as conflicted.
“She’s not exactly thrilled about me dating Hunter. She says he might steer me away from my destiny, and that it would be disgraceful if I ended up a simple commoner instead of a princess.”
“Oh, that’s absurd!” Poppy complained, frowning.
“Yeah, I know. Last time we talked, I changed the subject and started talking about my shoe shop.”
“Ashlynn, at this point, the best thing you can do is let it go.” Cupid said. “Just look around, none of us here are relying on our parents to follow our destinies. Just look at Raven!”
Despite Raven’s small cough of protest, she went on.
“If Farah is willing to help you and Hunter, I don’t think it’ll matter in the end.”
“I know. Thank you, Cupid.” Ashlynn replied with a sweet smile, the kind that made her eyes crinkle as her dimples appeared. “Other than that, I think we’re doing really well.”
“You two are always so discreet.” Blondie laughed. “It’s adorable.”
“Good to know you fake it that well.” Briar teased with a laugh. “I still remember when I ran into Hunter leaving our dorm.”
“Oh, stop it.” Ashlynn shot back, her face turning red as an apple. “He was just helping me clean!”
“Ash, my dear, you’re not fooling anyone with that face!”
“Let’s be honest, Ash,” Apple said with a smile. “You and Hunter have been together for a long time.”
“You’ve never… you know,” Poppy shrugged, “gone further than a few kisses? I mean, that’s normal, right?”
“It depends on what you consider ‘far.’”
“You two have… slept together or something?” Holly asked, as if she were sharing a secret.
“Well, a few times in the Enchanted Forest we ended up falling asleep together. But the way you mean it…” Ashlynn hesitated for a moment.
She rubbed her hands against the edge of her dress, looked away, and only when her eyes met Apple’s, steady and reassuring, did she take a deep breath.
“Yeah… we’ve gone a bit further.”
“Yeah, we figured.” Briar chimed in with a grin.
“What?” Ashlynn gasped, nearly toppling off her chair. “What do you mean you figured?”
“Ash, dear, like I said,” Apple began, “you and Hunter have been together for years. We assumed something had happened.”
“So… you don’t mind?”
“Ashlynn, he’s your boyfriend.” Raven said with a small smile. “It’s only natural to expect a hand here and there.”
“About that…” Ashlynn scratched the back of her neck, flustered. “We’ve gone a little further than just… a wandering hand.”
“Ohh, now that’s new.” Blondie replied. “Well? Go on.”
“Well, you know… the hand starts at the waist and kind of… slips… or a kiss drifts a little lower…”
“Your kiss drifted a little lower?” Poppy repeated, raising a brow.
“N-no…” Ashlynn blushed. “His did.”
“Oh, wow. Straight to the point.” Rosabella laughed.
“I told you, her face gives her away.” Briar admitted. “Was it good?”
“How could it not be?” Ashlynn replied with an awkward little laugh. Then she shifted her attention to Raven, who, Apple had already noticed, was nervously fidgeting with her fingers. “What about you, Raven?”
“What about me?”
“Let’s be honest, Raven,” Rosabella began. “Setting the picnics aside, we all know you and Dexter go on plenty of dates.”
“It’s still funny thinking about your first time at the movies,” Apple said with a soft laugh at the memory. Raven pacing back and forth in the dorm, putting on and taking off jewelry, fixing her hair over and over again. Every two minutes she’d ask if her outfit looked good, and change it if Apple didn’t answer fast enough. “It was cute.”
“Funny, right?” Raven shot back, her blush deeper against her pale cheeks. “Dexter is a prince.”
“Literally.” Poppy added, but Raven continued without acknowledging it.
“He’s sweet. And polite.”
“Is he a good kisser?” Holly asked. “I mean, he’s pretty shy, right?”
“Being shy doesn’t mean he’s not good at what he does.” Cupid said, making everyone fall silent as they turned to look at her. She immediately started stammering, trying to explain herself. “I-it’s just a fact. Obviously.”
“Anyway,” Raven continued, “yes… he… he kisses well.”
“Not very convincing.” Blondie said.
“It’s okay if Dexter’s not a great kisser, you know.” Apple teased. Sometimes it was impossible not to poke fun at Raven.
“I’m sure he’s better than Darling.” Raven shot back, and Apple felt heat rush through her entire body. “You’d know if you’d actually kissed your girlfriend.”
“I have kissed my girlfriend, Raven. We just don’t do it in front of people!”
“Neither do Dexter and I, if that’s what you’re implying.”
“You’re lucky I’ve never caught you two in the dorm…” Apple narrowed her eyes at her friend, who simply rolled hers.
“Well, I’m careful.”
“So you have brought him to your dorm?” Briar teased.
“What?!” Raven started, her voice stumbling over itself. “I-“
“Let’s be honest, you two have gone way further than Hunter and I, haven’t you?” Ashlynn laughed. “It’s okay, I’m not judging.”
“So what, your kisses went a little… lower?” Holly asked.
Raven didn’t answer. She lowered her gaze to the floor as if it had suddenly become fascinating. Apple’s heart gave a strange little leap when she realized.
Raven had definitely gone further than just a few kisses. It was obvious Dexter had been in their dorm once or twice, and not that Apple was imagining things; she had seen things and chosen to ignore them. A piece of men’s clothing hanging in the closet. A glasses case resting by the bedside.
Apple wore glasses too, when no one was looking, and aside from Raven and Briar, not even Darling knew. And she was certain that little blue case wasn’t hers.
So yes, she knew Dexter had been frequenting that dorm for a while now. And she also knew Raven took advantage of her absences to invite her boyfriend over. Did Rosabella think the same about her?
“He used his mouth.” Raven finally said after a few minutes of silence. “That’s all I’m saying.”
“Mm, more than enough.” Ashlynn agreed with a laugh.
“Looks like Dexter Charming isn’t as innocent as he seems.” Poppy giggled.
“You could all stop confusing his shyness with inexperience,” Raven said, more explanatory than annoyed. “He might not be Daring, throwing himself at every girl he sees, but he’s not an idiot.”
“No one thinks Dexter is an idiot.” Cupid concluded, though her expression held a hint of frustration. “It’s just… unusual… for some of us to see him that way.”
“If it helps, Raven,” Apple said with a small smile, “Darling is just as shy as Dexter, and look at her.”
“Yeah, I know. Must be a Charming thing.”
“Speaking of Charmings, I still have my reservations about Daring.” Blondie added, her bright blue eyes now gleaming with excitement as she turned to Rosabella. “Have you two even kissed yet?”
“Daring wouldn’t pass up that opportunity.” Poppy pointed out, still watching Rosabella with curiosity. “He kissed you, didn’t he?”
“Daring’s been… strange since he turned back into a human.” Rosabella explained, a note of uncertainty in her voice. “I don’t know, I haven’t really been spending time with him.”
“You’ve been avoiding him?” Briar asked.
Rosabella simply crossed her arms and looked down at her feet. For princesses, it was easy to deny and pretend nothing was wrong.
So that’s it, Apple thought. Rosabella is avoiding Daring. Maybe because she knows he was the Beast. That they’re meant to be together.
“You don’t like him?” Apple asked.
“It’s not that,” Rosabella replied. “But we’re talking about Daring Charming. Come on, he wouldn’t miss the chance to be with some girl. Even if it’s me.”
“And what’s wrong with it being you?” Cupid arched one of her thin brows.
“I’m nothing like the girls he usually likes. Think about it, Lizzie Hearts, Duchess Swan… and Apple White. Quite the pattern, don’t you think?”
“Wait, Lizzie Hearts?” Apple interrupted, her eyes widening. “You mean our Lizzie?”
“How do you know that?” Ashlynn turned to her.
“Darling told me. Actually, I don’t think I should be saying this.” Rosabella admitted, her face flushing an amusing shade of purple as she glanced at Apple. “I definitely shouldn’t have said that.”
“It’s okay, Bella,” Holly reassured her. “We won’t tell anyone. Besides, we know Daring doesn’t care.”
“It’s not about Daring, it’s about Lizzie. Oh, gosh, I’m so sorry.”
“You sound jealous, Rosabella.” Blondie concluded, as if trying to make things worse. Apple shot her a look, but softened when she noticed the sympathetic glint in the girl’s eyes. “You’re a princess too, you know? You’re beautiful, you’re smart. And you did something even Apple couldn’t.”
“Excuse me?” Apple cut in. Really, it wasn’t her fault Daring wasn’t her prince. In the end, everything had worked out, and she’d practically won the Charming lottery.
“You made him care about other people.” Blondie continued, unfazed by Apple’s interruption.
In that case, Blondie wasn’t wrong. Apple knew Daring well enough to understand exactly what kind of person he was: arrogant, conceited, and a complete idiot. Even so, she still cared about him, especially as a friend, but it was undeniable that Daring had always carried himself with a certain superiority.
Not being what he had always been meant to be, the Prince Charming of Snow White, couldn’t have been easy. Apple knew the kind of pressure the Charmings faced because of their father.
Her heart still sank a little when she remembered Darling, eyes brimming with tears, recounting what she had endured at the hands of the King Charming. Oh, what Apple wouldn’t give to have Darling in her arms right now.
And she was certain Raven and Rosabella were thinking the very same thing.
“Thank you, Blondie.” Rosabella said with a shy smile.
“You shouldn’t put yourself down like that, Rosabella.” Apple said, straightening slightly and offering the most comforting smile she could. “Darling has always said you’re an exceptional princess.”
“Oh, I owe her so much.” Rosabella’s cheeks flushed again. “And what about you two? How long have you been dating? Three weeks?”
“A month and a half. She’s incredible.”
“With all due respect, Apple,” Poppy winked at her, “but her arms are bigger than most of the knights here.”
“Why have you been paying attention to Darling’s arms?” Holly narrowed her eyes at her sister.
“You haven’t?”
“She works hard to keep those muscles, that’s undeniable.” Apple continued, ignoring the O’Hair sisters’ looks. “No wonder she’s out there training with the rest of the knights.”
“She really is dedicated.” Cupid agreed, looking more than happy to shift the topic. “And you two? A month and a half of dating, I bet things have already progressed quite a bit.”
“If you say so.” Raven laughed. “I still haven’t found anything of Darling’s in our dorm.”
“Like I said, we’re discreet!”
“So you two have been doing… things?” Blondie’s grin spread wide in that way that always got on Apple’s nerves.
That was when Apple began to drift, her friends’ gazes locking onto her as vivid memories of recent moments with Darling flooded her mind, sending a strange shiver down her spine.
Darling’s hands, firm and strong, resting on her waist, sometimes slipping lower along the fabric of her skirt and ended up in her ass. Soft, lingering kisses pressed along her jaw, trailing down her neck, brushing against her collarbone. And Apple’s own hands, once resting on Darling’s shoulders, sliding down her arms or tracing a slow, deliberate path across her chest until her breasts.
Apple shook her head. That had only happened once. No, twice. Not to mention the warmth of Darling’s hand between her thighs during class, squeezing them when she feels like it.
Apple pressed her legs together, trying to ignore the heat spreading through her body.
“See? She always zones out whenever we mention Darling.” Briar teased with that annoyingly smug little smile.
“I’m not zoning out.”
“Oh, you absolutely are.” Raven concluded with a laugh.
“I was just thinking…” Apple felt the heat in her body rise as she remembered the feeling of her girlfriend’s lips on hers, the warmth Darling radiated whenever Apple let a moan slip a little too loudly as Darling pressed their bodies together. “We haven’t really done much beyond kissing. It just gets… intense. Sometimes.”
“Darling already has some experience, though, doesn’t she?” Holly asked.
The warmth that rushed to Apple’s face was no longer embarrassment. Her heart gave a strange jolt, as if she’d just missed a step on a staircase.
“What do you mean by that?” Apple replied, not bothering to soften her tone.
“About Ginger.” Holly continued, stammering slightly. Apple’s sharp glare clearly didn’t help. “Haven’t you heard the rumors?”
“What rumors?” before she even got an answer, Apple turned to Blondie, who already had her mouth open, ready to speak.
“Since Darling revealed herself as the White Knight. Don’t you remember? Ginger spent weeks talking about a wonderful knight in Wonderland.”
“When did this happen?” Apple pressed again.
Raven cleared her throat beside her and swallowed nervously.
“In the spring. When the Cheshire Cat brought that prank book here. You, Daring, Cedar, and the rest of them… you know, changed a little.”
“I remember that.” Ashlynn shuddered in her seat. “It wasn’t nice.”
“Well, I still don’t see what Ginger has to do with my girlfriend.” Apple emphasized, making sure to stress my with every syllable.
“Ginger ended up in Wonderland, and now we know the knight who helped her was Darling.” Raven explained. “So people just… connected the dots.”
Apple clenched her teeth, her jaw tightening as she gripped the edge of her skirt. So that was why Darling was always busy? Training, studying, jousting…
No. She couldn’t doubt her like that. It was unfair to take away from all of Darling’s effort… but what if it wasn’t just that?
“You knew about this?” Apple broke the silence as she turned to Briar, who widened her eyes and tapped her foot nervously against the floor.
“I-I heard a thing or two. Just not the details.”
“Why didn’t anyone tell me people were saying this?!”
“Oh, Apple, no one wants that kind of thing reaching you.” Ashlynn said gently, even as Apple looked like she was on the verge of falling apart. “Princesses aren’t always… kind.”
“Neither are the boys.” Cupid added. “Apple, you and Darling are envied by a lot of people. I know, I know,” she raised her hands when Apple looked ready to interrupt, “it’s not fair. Darling is a Charming who had thousands of admirers, and you’re the future queen. Of course people were going to talk.”
“That doesn’t even make sense! Why would anyone say something like that?”
“To shake you.” Raven answered, squeezing Apple’s hand. “Trust me, I know it’s hard. But Apple, I know both Darling and Ginger, and neither of them would ever do something like that.”
“Apple,” Rosabella called softly, “believe it when we say Darling is crazy about you. Seriously, ever since she realized she was in love, it’s been unbearable watching her pine over you. Cute, but unbearable.”
“You don’t need to know Darling that well to see she loves you.” Poppy agreed. “During the Dragon Games, when… well, you knocked her down, she didn’t even get upset!”
“Poppy!” Holly scolded.
“What? If you knocked me down, I’d definitely be upset!”
“What she means,” Holly cut in, “is that Darling loves you regardless of the circumstances.”
“And Ginger wouldn’t do something like that.” Briar added quickly, flashing a reassuring smile. “Besides, she likes Hopper. He doesn’t notice, of course, but she likes him, not Darling.”
Apple wanted to pull her knees to her chest, but she figured that wouldn’t look very proper. What she really wanted was to find her girlfriend, grab her by the collar, and then pull her into a kiss…
Darling would never do that to her…
“I think we should start decorating the ballhall.”
“Yes! Great idea!” Cupid exclaimed, a little too enthusiastically. At least, that’s how Apple chose to interpret it.
The girls quickly split up, each taking responsibility for a different part of the massive hall. Ashlynn and Briar began setting up the tables, while the O’Hair sisters used Holly’s hair to decorate the ceiling and the entrance.
Meanwhile, Cupid and Rosabella, with Blondie’s help and her Mirrorpad, worked on the walls, covering them in pink, red, and white heart decorations.
Apple and Raven, on the other hand, unpacked the remaining supplies the others would need.
And despite the music filling the hall, thanks to the speaker Raven had connected to her mirrorphone, Apple couldn’t hear a thing beyond the restless thoughts swirling in her mind about her girlfriend.
Darling wasn’t Daring. She wouldn’t throw herself at the first princess she saw. And Ginger wasn’t even a princess, what could she possibly have that Apple didn’t?
Maybe the ability to not be so selfish, a small voice whispered in the back of her mind. The ability to care a little more about others, not just herself.
Without realizing it, she tightened her grip on the edge of one of the boxes, irritation bubbling up.
“Stop thinking about it, Apple.” Raven murmured close to her ear. “Darling wouldn’t be crazy enough to do something like that.”
“It’s not about her, Raven. It’s about me.”
“Apple-“
“I know, it’s a selfish thought… again.”
“Apple, I-“
“But I can’t stop thinking that if I were just a little better, she-“
“Apple, stop!” In one swift motion, Raven grabbed her by the shoulders and turned her to face her. “Let me speak. Listen, stop dwelling on what’s already happened, okay? I know whatever’s going on in your head has a lot more to do with things than just Darling.”
“I just wish her love for me actually meant something. That your friendship meant something!”
“And it does! Apple, don’t be so hard on yourself. I know what you went through with your mother, it’s not easy to let go of our roots.”
“You make it look easy.” Apple groaned, avoiding Raven’s determined gaze.
“Trust me, it’s not. I still have bursts of anger, a few uncontrolled spells here and there, and a very unhealthy dose of envy sometimes. I think that’s normal.”
“Yeah… envy is part of the story.”
“Don’t let that get to you, Apple. You deserve to be loved more than any of us. And Darling knows that. Honestly, I think she was the first to realize it.”
Apple parted her lips to thank her friend, already lifting her arms to hug her, despite knowing Raven hated surprise hugs, when a sharp yelp from Holly cut through the air.
Apple turned just in time to feel a chill run down her spine as she saw Holly teetering on the beam she was standing on, one step away from slipping. Poppy stood right below her, arms full of decorations.
She wouldn’t be able to help, Holly was going to fall.
And when her heel slipped, Apple and Raven both rushed forward. Raven was already preparing to use her magic to soften the fall, her eyes beginning to glow purple…
But Holly never hit the ground.
She was caught by a pair of strong, steady arms. Arms Apple knew very well.
“Darling?” Holly asked, one eye opening in surprise.
“Need a hand?” Darling said with an easy, bright smile.
“Holly, are you okay?” Poppy rushed forward, nearly tackling her sister the moment Darling set her down. “You almost gave me a heart attack!”
“Its okay. I’m fine. Thank you, Darling.” Holly said.
Darling scratched the back of her head and shrugged, as if rescuing princesses was just another item on her daily to-do list.
“Why were you hanging from the ceiling?” a voice asked from behind her, and Apple immediately recognized it as Dexter’s.
Behind him, Daring, Hunter, Cerise, and Ramona all stared at Holly as if she might fall again at any moment.
“We’re decorating!” Blondie called from across the hall.
“Still?” Ramona raised a thick eyebrow. “I thought you’d be halfway done by now.”
“We got a little delayed…” Cupid admitted as she, Briar, Rosabella and Ashlynn joined the group.
Apple and Raven were the only ones who hadn’t moved, still standing among the boxes.
Apple knew it would be strange if she didn’t go over. She knew Darling would notice something was off and come ask her about it.
“Come on, Your Majesty.” Raven said, placing a hand on her shoulder. “Your princess won’t like being kept waiting.”
“Let’s go, then.” Apple looped her arm through Raven’s as they walked toward the others. “I still can’t believe we’re dating twins.”
“Not alike at all… and yet exactly the same.”
They approached laughing, drawing a few looks, including from Dexter and Darling, who both blushed and smiled at the same time.
It was almost unsettling, how similar they were once you really paid attention.
“Hey, Raven.” Dexter said with a smile.
“Hey, Dex. So, how was training?”
“It was pretty good.” Hunter answered, his arms wrapped around Ashlynn. “Coach Gingerbread Man didn’t make us run fifteen laps.”
“Yeah, instead he had you all throwing yourselves on the ground.” Cerise laughed. “It was ridiculous.”
“Why were you throwing yourselves on the ground?” Apple rose slightly on her tiptoes and, with a subtle movement, pressed a kiss to her girlfriend’s cheek. Darling pulled her closer in response.
“Bookball training.” Daring added, tossing his hair in an unnecessarily dramatic way. “Now that the princesses joined the team, the coach’s really going all in.”
“Wait, what princesses?” Cupid asked.
Before any of the boys could answer, Cerise elbowed Daring and rolled her eyes.
“It’s nothing. But after last year’s Thronecoming, the coach insisted on recruiting me. And my idiot sister thought she was included too.”
Ramona smirked, placing her hands on her hips.
“Relax, sis. No need to be jealous.”
“Jealous? Of you?! I-“
“Alright, alright, we get it, you’re both good!” Rosabella cut in. Out of the corner of her eye, Apple could’ve sworn she saw Daring shrink slightly behind Dexter. “How about, now that you’re here, we get back to decorating the hall?”
“Yes, brilliant idea.” Cupid chimed in. “Boys, why don’t you handle the hard part and decorate the ceiling? Darling, you’re coming with me.”
As the group began to disperse, Apple turned back toward the boxes, but Raven grabbed her by the elbow and nodded toward Darling.
“Go. Dexter and I can finish this.”
Dexter, standing just behind them, nodded and gave that same shy smile.
Apple agreed, more reluctantly than she expected, and made her way over to where Cupid was instructing Darling, waving her arms frantically toward the wall.
“Oh, Apple!” Cupid beamed when she saw her. “Perfect. Why don’t you help Darling decorate this wall?”
“I’d love to.”
“Great. In the meantime, I’ll go give those two some instructions.” Apple glanced over to see who she meant and spotted Hunter and Daring carrying the disco ball. “Oh, heavens, they’re going to drop it!”
She rushed off to help them, and before Apple could even turn back to her girlfriend, Darling had already taken her hand and pulled her into a soft kiss.
Their lips met and fit together perfectly. The familiar softness of Darling’s lips, the warmth radiating from her, the firm grip of her hand in Apple’s…
Apple closed her eyes, feeling heat spread through her body with every second the kiss lingered.
Unfortunately, it didn’t last long. When Darling pulled away, a smile lit up her face.
“Told you I’d come.”
“You took your time.”
Darling pressed a kiss to her forehead and squeezed her hand, giving her that sideways smile that made Apple tremble from head to toe, one that disarmed her completely.
“We’ll spend the whole night together. I promise.”
Apple wanted to ignore everyone around them, forget everything else. She wanted to wrap her arms around Darling’s neck, tangle her fingers in her hair, be held by the waist while pulling her closer, kissing her until she ran out of breath, only to start all over again.
But she didn’t do any of that. Instead, she smiled and laced her fingers with Darling’s.
“You better save me a dance, Darling Charming.”
Darling’s smile widened, and leaning closer to Apple, she whispered something meant only for her.
“Your wish is my command, Your Majesty.”
***
Once again, Raven paced back and forth across the dormitory, getting ready in a frenzy, even though Apple had already assured her she would be the most stunning girl at the ball.
Well, right after Darling, perhaps. And Apple herself, of course.
Even so, Raven truly did look beautiful. Her dark hair was pulled into a ponytail that brushed against her back; two small braids, streaked with purple strands, circled her head. She wore a long violet gown with a slit that began at the neckline and descended to her bust. The sleeves were long and flowed past her arms, loose enough not to restrict her movements.
“Raven, you look gorgeous.” Apple insisted once more. “Put on the silver earrings Maddie gave you and you’ll be perfect!”
“I don’t know, Apple… do you think I look… too much?” Raven asked, glancing at herself in the mirror.
“Not at all.”
Apple took the initiative, picking up the jewelry her friend needed. She stepped behind her, adjusting the necklace in the reflection before handing her the earrings.
“Now come on. Our Charming twins are waiting for us.”
Raven laughed, and after one last look in the mirror, the two of them made their way to the grand hall.
Everything was breathtaking, so beautifully arranged and perfectly prepared. Pink, white, blue, and red lights shimmered everywhere; tables were set, food and sweets displayed, everything a proper ball could ever need.
As soon as Apple and Raven arrived, Cupid greeted them with a wide smile.
“Another few minutes and I would’ve thought you weren’t coming.”
“As if we’d miss this party. It all looks incredible.” Raven said with a smile. “You did amazing, Cupid.”
“Well, I couldn’t have done it without you. Now go on, don’t waste time with me. Darling has already asked fifteen times if I’ve seen you.”
Apple couldn’t help but laugh, and felt that familiar warmth blooming in her chest begin to loosen, like a knot slowly coming undone.
Cupid stepped aside to let them through, and the music, louder now, filled the space around them.
“Look, there they are.” Raven said, guiding Apple’s gaze toward one of the tables farther from the stage.
And there she was, beautiful, breathtaking, ready to steal the air from any princess who dared to look her way.
Darling looked absolutely perfect. Her hair was pulled into a high ponytail, her blue dress leaving her back exposed, a white corset cinching her waist and accentuating her hips. Her arms were bare as well, thanks to the long, sheer sleeves that draped loosely over her well-defined shoulders.
For a second, Apple thought she might faint.
As they approached, Darling turned those enchanting blue eyes toward them, and Apple caught the exact moment they lit up, how that smile, the one only she knew so well, spread across her face.
“Wow, you both look amazing.” came a voice Apple recognized as Dexter’s.
“Hi, Dex.” she greeted him. It felt oddly natural calling him that; after so long hearing Raven and Darling use the nickname, it had simply stuck. “You look great too.”
And he really did. He wore a blue dress shirt with the sleeves rolled up to his elbows, a black tie over a dark undershirt, and tucked into the left pocket of his chest was a small purple flower.
Apple pretended not to notice, offering only a polite smile as Raven stared at him like a complete fool.
With a nudge to her side, Raven snapped out of it.
“I like the flower.” she said, her smile suddenly shy.
Dexter scratched the back of his neck, flustered, but quickly reached for her hand in such a gentle gesture that even Apple found herself surprised.
“Come on, I want to show you backstage before the dancing starts.”
Before disappearing into the crowd, Raven glanced back over her shoulder, flashing Apple an excited, slightly awkward smile, as if to say, here I go.
Apple answered with two thumbs up, forcing confidence into her expression. Those two were ridiculously adorable, completely gone for each other, and still somehow stuck at square one.
“Is now a good time to tell you how beautiful you look?”
The voice murmured close to her neck, and an involuntary smile tugged at Apple’s lips.
She turned, butterflies erupting in her stomach, her face warming as she met her girlfriend’s soft, smiling expression.
“It’s always a good time for a compliment.”
“Good to know, because you look stunning.”
Darling took her hands and leaned in, pressing her lips to Apple’s in a gentle, fleeting kiss.
“Why were you gone so long?”
“Oh, you know Raven.” Apple rolled her eyes, recalling the chaos of the late afternoon. “She started getting paranoid.”
“We seriously need to get it into her head that Dexter would be obsessed with her even if she were related to Croakington.”
Apple laughed, squeezing Darling’s hands again.
“Do you want to sit for a bit before they start playing the slow songs?” Darling asked.
“Sit?” Apple glanced toward the wide dance floor, where dozens of students moved along to Melody’s lively music.
Then her gaze drifted, just slightly, to a quieter corner, where Ginger Breadhouse was adjusting sweets on one of the tables.
Would it really be so wrong for Apple to step right onto that dance floor, pull Darling along with her, and let everyone see that she was hers?
No… probably not.
She would only be confirming what was already true, that this princess belonged to her. And truth be told, Apple doubted any prince or princess would dare try to take Darling Charming away for a dance.
“No, I don’t think so.”
Apple took Darling by the hand and pulled her toward the center of the dance floor, smiling brighter than ever as she turned to face her.
The crowd closed in around them, the music thundered in their ears, and the warmth of the room wrapped itself around their bodies. And yet, the moment Darling smiled, when her hand settled at Apple’s waist, it all seemed to fade.
There was no one else on that floor but them. Apple could hear her own heartbeat pounding in her ears, and the warmth of Darling’s touch was steady, grounding.
Darling gasped softly in surprise as she was spun into the center, drawing glances from every direction.
“Where is all this energy coming from?”
“You owe me a dance, my love.” Apple replied, her teasing smile saying everything. “Or have you forgotten?”
All Darling did was smile, taking Apple’s hand to twirl her before pulling her close again.
“Well then… would you grant me the honor?”
“Save your charm for later, Darling. Right now, I want this entire dance floor for us.”
And so it was; hands intertwined, feet moving in slightly clumsy steps. Apple lost count of how many times she spun, smiling every time Darling drew her close again. She stopped trying to keep track of how often her hands found their way to Darling’s neck, pulling herself nearer as they moved together. Always smiling, always together.
Only when the microphone echoed through the hall did they stop, turning their attention to the stage where Melody stood.
“Good evening, fairytale students!” Melody beamed at the crowd, winking at some, waving at others. “Now that we’re all warmed up, let’s let love take the lead for a while.”
With a few quick adjustments, the music shifted, soft and slow, replacing the lively rhythm from before.
Apple exhaled slowly, catching her breath from the last dance. Now would be a good time to sit. But before she could even say a word, she felt hands tighten around her waist, pulling her in.
Within seconds, she was wrapped completely in Darling’s arms.
“Subtle.” she teased.
“I told you I’d dance with you all night.”
Apple rested her hands on Darling’s shoulders, gazing into her eyes before letting her head fall gently against her chest, allowing Darling to guide them in slow, swaying steps.
Her feet already ached from her heels, but Apple didn’t dare pull away, not even for a moment. She could feel Darling’s heart beating steadily beneath her, the rise and fall of her chest, the warmth of her hands at her waist. Apple slid her arms around Darling’s neck and closed her eyes.
In that moment, it was only them.
There was nothing, no one, that could take this away from her. Darling was her destiny, after all. They would marry, dance together in a grand hall on their wedding day, smile for their guests, and seal their story with a kiss beneath a beautiful altar, fulfilling the most perfect fairytale ending.
There was no Prince Charming.
There was Darling, her love, her easy smile, her soft laughter, her steady warmth.
Her destiny. Her girlfriend. Her future wife.
Apple pressed her head a little closer against Darling’s chest, feeling her draw her even nearer.
So this was love.
Apple knew, with quiet certainty, that this feeling would last forever.
And if that were true… then this was exactly where she wanted to be.
