Living Normally

Summary:

Ren and Futaba go on a walk together in their new world and deliver those letters for their friends.

Notes:

Just like how the Phantom World got its deleted scene, the Abyssal World is gonna get one as well, just so they can be even. It's supposed to take place some time after 'Worth A Thousand Words' so it would make sense for it to be in the Hidden Truths series, but I'm already past that so this will be on its own.

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

After writing a lengthy letter to the former Monsta X members and chatting with Sojiro about his time with them and everything that has happened so far, Ren is about ready to send that letter to them.

He did remember that there is a special mailbox somewhere hidden in the city, away from all the hustling and bustling and it's probably going to be a lengthy one. Since one of them lives here locally, the other overseas and the rest beyond anyone's imagination, he's willing to make the trip.

The bell rings to see Futaba walking in.

"Heya Sojiro, Ren!" Futaba greeted.

"Ah, Futaba. Perfect timing. Here, I have a fresh plate of curry for you." Sojiro serves it out.

"Now that's what I'm talking about!" Futaba made herself comfortable as she sat on one of the stools and began digging in. "Mmm, mmm. Shoo good." She said with her mouth full.

"Hey, careful there. You don't wanna overdo it." Ren says.

"I'll be fine. I can watch myself." Futaba told him.

Sojiro can only chuckle to see his adopted children really act like one. It really brought him back to the olden days to when Akira and his Futaba were still alive.

"Anyway, what are you guys talking about?"

"Ren is about to send this letter to his friends. He's going on a long trip." Sojiro told her.

"I need to make a lot of copies so that everyone gets one." Ren added. "I'll probably have to go to Shujin to use their printers for this."

"Ooh, I'll come with."

"What? But you just got here."

"So what? I wanna go. It's not like you to say no to anyone of us."

"She's got you there." Sojiro chuckled.

"Alright, we'll go, once you're done eating. I gotta go pack up some stamps and envelopes here."

Ren packed lightly since it's only the letters, envelopes, stamps, and whatever he needs for the travels.

"Alright, we're all good."

"Already done." Futaba wipes her mouth with a napkin.

"Damn, that quick?"

"She's a growing girl, I'll tell you that." Sojiro chuckled. "Anyway, have fun, you two, and be careful on the way."

"We will, Dad." They said as they walk out of the door.

"Dad, huh? I like the sound of that. Don't worry you two. I'm in good hands now."

The two siblings made a quick stop to Shujin for Ren to use the printers to copy the letters. Futaba was helping Ren put the letters into the envelopes and stamps, some of the students that are here chatted with them for a bit about their time here, which is good by the looks of things.

But as much as they want to stay and talk, they got something else to do, so the siblings left, saying goodbye to them before leaving.

First stop they went to is going to the post office to send the first two letters, one for Jackie, and the other for Soren. Since Soren's letter is all the way in the States, he had to pay a little extra for the international fees which he doesn't mind.

And with that done, they take the subway to find where the special mailbox is. While Futaba is asleep, Ren looks out at the window to see Odaiba. He's never been to Odaiba before since the Phantom Thieves' base of operations was only in Shibuya and all they did was kill.

They've never known peace, relaxation, or anything like that, and for the chance to explore around the city, and the world later on, they'll all be able to do so many things now that this world is their oyster.

The subway stops, with Ren nudging his sister up as they're about to be on their way.

The special mailbox happens to be in a very secluded spot where almost no one knows about, allowing the two privacy to send the last 8 letters into the box. With the objective now complete, it was time to head back home.

As they were walking back to the subway station, Ren couldn't help but look at Futaba's prosthetic, which is clung on with her remaining hand.

"Hey, what's up? Is there something on my face?" Futaba asked.

"Huh? Oh no, it's just… You've been taking really good care of your prosthetic I see. I just can't stop looking at it."

"Hey, look all you want. I've been taking REALLY good care of it. Like, really really good care of it. Oh, and don't tell anyone this, but don't listen to what my prosthetists say. They say that it's barely below the elbow, but I know it's slightly above it."

"What, really?"

"Yeah. Even Kasumi thinks the same thing too. Look, I don't blame them for trying to make it sound easier for us, but I think they should've looked at it better."

"Did you tell them that?"

"I did, and they adjusted it."

"That's good to know."

"By the way, Ren?"

"Yeah?"

"If you don't mind me asking, what did you write in that letter?"

Ren stopped in his tracks when she asked him that.

"That letter… I wanted to tell everyone that we're doing great, that we're all starting off in Shujin, except Yusuke and Goro of course, and that we're all pursuing our passions and dreams. I wanted to tell them that we love this new world, that this is so much better than ours, and that we'll continue living here in their stead."

"That's very sweet of you. Thanks for telling them all of that. It really makes us feel…"

"Blessed?"

"Yeah. You could say that. We're given a second chance." Futaba looked up at the sky. "Let's not waste it."

"Definitely. I hope that wherever they are, they're resting peacefully and living happily over there."

"And Ren?"

"Yeah?"

Futaba rushed to hug him tightly.

"Thank you, for being my big brother."

Ren pats her head. "And thank you for being my little sister. Shall we go home?"

"Yeah. Lead the way, big bro."

They continue walking their way back to the subway, talking and laughing on the way.

They're right about one thing; They all got a second chance in life, and the only way to keep it is to live it out as the best they can. Not only for themselves, but for their counterparts that have long departed, their friends and families that have come to love them as their own, the fighters that helped them become accustomed to this new world, and of course, to the one girl, who gave her life to save theirs, Lynn.

Never again will they suffer another tragedy.

Notes:

And while I'm writing out that chapter for the Smash World, I'm also gonna be back to writing some other stupid shit that I really wanted to get to, but depending on the pace that I'm going with this, it's gonna take a while for me to get those going when I have the time.

But uh, yeah, we'll see.
