Breaking News

Summary:

It's SDN's Annual Easter Celebration and Courtney is supposed to be Robert's plus one to the party hosted by the DTLA branch. Unfortunately, Mecha Man and Invisigal don't usually frequent the same circles, even when they're attending the same event. While Courtney is seeking ways to kill time until she can go back home with her boyfriend, Robert is keeping a watchful eye on the company that follows her all night long. And it turns out he's not liking it very much.

For Invisimonth 2026. Jealousy prompt x Possessive (from the NSFW prompt list).

Chapter 1

Notes:

I've been working on this for the past three or four days. It ended up being longer than intended. Anyway, I thought, since we've already seen a jealous Visi in canon, why not explore a jealous Robert for a change? She deserves it.

Sexual content present! Be warned.

(See the end of the chapter for more notes.)

Breaking News

Sunday, March 31st, 2024. 11:46 P.M.

Almost midnight and guests are still arriving. Or she’s been here too long and the place is starting to feel more crowded than it actually is. Courtney hasn’t even had much to drink, so she can’t really blame alcohol for her dwindling mood. It’s probably just her mental clock hitting that I need to be anywhere but here time. But when your boyfriend asks you to be his plus one to a corporate event neither one of you is excited to attend, you go so you can suffer together.

Except for the fact that they can’t do that either. Not together, anyway. Not during such a public event with cameras and reporters around every corner salivating over the potential to snap the photo that’ll make tomorrow’s news. Invisigal and Mecha Man in the same headline would surely do it. So, really, why the fuck did Robert ask her to come with him? They spent the whole night since they got here almost three hours ago talking to everyone but each other. Robert kept getting pulled by one famous superhero or another for a chat, even got dragged to one of the VIP rooms a couple times while she was left mingling with her fellow lowly heroes of SDN.

Well, calling herself lowly’s not exactly fair—Robert would say that, at least. She’s had a few new hires run up to her asking for her autograph, or requesting she tell them a story of her recent heroics. This … has been happening more and more over the past few months. She never caught that initial wave of fame that hit the Z-Team right after the Red Ring’s attacks, thanks to being strapped to a stretcher on her way to the hospital while the rest of them were live on camera. But her name did start to emerge here and there in a few articles, then she showed up with the Z-Teamers on some interviews, and well … now she has boxes upon boxes of fan mail that she has no clue where to store, and those are the ones she kept. She has to throw about eighty percent of the stuff she gets because it’s mostly from parasocial horny weirdos. That’s another reason she hates these sorts of big events. But if there’s a time to be thankful for her invisibility, it’s now. It’s come in clutch a couple times tonight already.

On the bright side, she got to see Alice again. There’s that. Phenomaman also invited her to hang out with the A-Team because, as he bluntly put it, she looked pathetic and in desperate need for companionship so as not to appear miserable during the feast of the egg-laying bunny. So that was sweet.

Eventually everyone scattered though and she was left with only Sweetalker to talk to. She bided her time with casual chatter all the while tracking Robert as he moved from one side of the hall to the other, each time with a different crowd, waiting for an opportunity to catch him alone. Check in. See how much longer before they could head home.

Sometimes she wonders how she ever looked up to these guys—the A-Team, Phenomaman... Not that she doesn’t respect them. But back when she first joined SDN—no, even before it, they all used to seem so … well, big? Unreachable? Intimidating and awesome. Now she talks to them and they’re like … just normal ass people. Even the ones who don’t look like people. She gets to call them her work buddies. Coworkers. And aside from the occasional dipshit who still looks down on every Phoenix, they all treat her as an equal. How else would she have been able to signal for Pom Pom to take her dinosaur friend away?

Robert’s sitting at the open bar with his back to the bartender, looking bored out of his mind and downing a something shot when Courtney joins him. His set of bunny ears that they were handed upon arrival is sitting on the stool to his left. She’d tossed hers in the first trashcan she came across and told people she forgot it somewhere she can’t remember.

“S’up, loser?” She gives his arm a playful nudge and hops onto the other free stool beside him.

“Nothing much.” He catches her eyes from the corner of his. “What’s up with you, hot shot?”

“Need a drink,” she says. That seems to get the bartender’s attention. “I’ll have what he’s having.” A nod to Robert.

“It’s a suicide shot,” Robert says in that hot, dry voice of his as he places his empty glass down. “I’ll have another one too.”

Courtney raises her brows at him. “Sounds like you’re having the time of your life, Mecha Man.”

He sighs. “I feel like I’m stuck in the most boring time loop I could have ever ended up in and I’m starting to wonder if some sort of evil villain scheme is at play here. I could swear I spoke to the same guy for the first time three times tonight.”

Holy shit. Yeah, okay, he fucking earned that drink.

“But…” Robert says, “I see you’re leaving your loner ways behind, Invisigal. You were talking to that guy for almost an hour.”

“Pft, nah.” Courtney snorts at that. “I think he just liked the sound of his voice. I barely got like two words in.”

Robert reaches for his refill. “Well, probably because you were too busy laughing at whatever he was saying.”

Courtney pauses just as her glass touches her lips. Hang on a fucking second. She turns to Robert with pinched brows, trying to catch his eyes. Is he mad at her? What the fuck? If anything, she should be mad at him. He invited her here and then proceeded to spend time with everyone but her.

He downs his drink in one go, then throws a vaguely bitter, “Must be a really funny guy.”

No, wait. He’s not mad. This is something else.

“Are you…” She hesitates to even say the word. It’s gotta register first.

He squints when he meets her gaze, as if daring her. She can taste the salt in his voice before he even asks, “Am I what?” Yep, there, registered.

“Are you jealous?” Courtney can’t contain a chortle at how absurd it sounds when it finally comes out.

Robert keeps that unbothered face of his slapped on. “Jealous? I’m not jealous.” And yet, despite that monotone delivery, Courtney sees right through him.

“Holy fuck, you are jealous.” She snorts and chugs her shot, letting the tequila mix burn its way down her throat. “You’re jealous of Sweetalker? Seriously? You’re jealous of a fucking lizard dude?”

Robert sighs, “I said I’m not jealous.”

“Yeah, that’s exactly what a jealous person would say.”

“Courtney…” He exhales, and the way his lips crack into a faint, shameful smile signposts his defeat. “Yes, alright. Maybe I am feeling a bit … protective.”

“Jealous,” she corrects. “Oh my God. Wait.” Courtney reaches into her purse for her phone, swipes for the camera then aims it at him. “I wanna take a picture of your face. This is a whole new side to you I wanna remember for the rest of my life.”

“Okay, now you’re blowing this way out of proportion.”

“Holy shit, Robert.” Snap. Uh-huh. She’s gonna be staring at this for hours in the coming days. For now the phone goes back to her purse so she can focus on her boyfriend again. The bartender moves out of earshot to serve a group of four at the edge of the bar. Not that she’d give a fuck if he could hear. “I’m not gonna lie to you, I’m so fucking turned on right now. I didn’t know you had it in you…” Courtney teases, leaning over so she can whisper close to his face, “You wanna maybe sneak off somewhere so you can fuck me real hard and tell me I’m yours.”

“I would love to, except for the fact that we’re, you know, at a fucking corporate party.” He gestures vaguely around them with his eyes.

“Yeah, and it sounds like you really need a reminder of whose plus one I am.” Not to mention, it wouldn’t be the first time they had sex somewhere they shouldn’t, either.

“There are reporters in here,” he argues, but really it sounds more like he’s trying to convince himself rather than convince her.

“I know! Can you imagine the headlines? Breaking News: Mecha Man Caught Having Sex At SDN’s Annual Easter Event!”

“Look, we get caught with our pants down, at least you can turn invisible and save yourself. I’m not exactly ready for my ass to go viral anytime soon.”

Courtney nods in agreement. “Yeah, and if you were gonna go viral for something, it’d probably be your dick.”

“Thank you for that insult and/or compliment.” Robert shakes his head, smiling faintly. “Now, why don’t you suggest something that won’t get us a lifetime ban from ever attending a company event again?”

“Thought you didn’t care about these events.”

“I don’t,” he says. “But there are more honorable ways to get out of things that don’t involve ending up in a superhero sex tape.”

Hard to think it’s been over a year since … since that night at the steel mill. Hard to think they’ve come as far as they have in the eight months they’ve known each other. Yet somehow it feels like they’ve been together for all their lives. Somehow Courtney can’t remember what her life was like before Robert. And she sure as fuck doesn’t want to remember it. That’s why, more often than not, she’ll opt for playing the good girl if it makes him happy.

“Okay. Fine.” Well, a mischievous good girl. “Then I guess I’ll just keep up appearances. Go mingle some more. Maybe get hit on by a few more lizard dudes. Get a few more pics of your face from different angles.” She hops off the stool and turns on her heels. But before she can make one step forward, a firm grasp surrounds her wrist and pulls her back, hard. She half-falls on his lap, steadies herself by pressing a hand to his leg.

Robert pushes a thigh between hers while his fingertips flirt with her waist. His warm, tequila-flavored breath blows on her neck. A wave of heat shoots from the pits of her stomach all the way up to her cheeks. “You just love torturing me, don’t you?” he mutters.

Yeah, she does. Almost as much as he loves torturing her.

Courtney shoots him a look from over her shoulder, briefly catching the bartender sneaking curious glances at them. Though he turns away with an awkward smile and pretend-cleans some glasses.

She pulls back to her feet, reluctantly breaking away from Robert so she can face him. “Are you kidding? All this time I thought you were the kinda guy who gets off on watching his girl get eye-fucked by a buncha randos. Trust me, if anyone’s being tortured right now, it’s my underwear. It’s drowning, Robbie. Only you can save it—”

“Fucking hell, Courtney.” He runs a palm down his face in what she knows is feigned exasperation, then he gets up. No words are needed. He communicates what needs communicating with his eyes as they travel in the direction of a hallway swarmed mainly by waiting staff, then return to her.

Courtney acknowledges with a smile. Not another second goes wasted. Breath held. Body vanishes. She starts for the hallway, and Robert’s following right behind her. Almost glued to her. Thank God for her high heels providing sound cues.

Down the hallway, she dodges people as they come, scanning every room on the way. For how big this place is, there’s a fuck ton of people everywhere. They’ll have to find somewhere a lot more secluded if they really wanna stay out of trouble. Or maybe they should just go to his car instead—

A clumsy hand reaches for her back, as if to make sure she’s there, before an arm wraps around her waist and pulls her into the first empty room they come across.

“Here’ll have to do,” Robert says.

Courtney stumbles in while he closes the door. She reappears with an exhale. “Are you sure? There were like five people on the other side of that wall.” She points to the right side, and scans their surroundings. Looks like someone’s office was repurposed for the occasion. Unused decorations thrown about. Open boxes filled with cutlery and plates. And bottles. Lots and lots of expensive looking bottles. “And it looks like this is where they’re stashing all the extra booze, meaning people will definitely be coming here to steal some—”

But he shuts her up with a kiss. A swipe of his arm pulls her flush against him by the waist. Yeah, good point.

Courtney drapes an arm over his shoulder. She kisses him back while he slowly guides them further into the room, until she feels her thighs pressing against a surface—a desk. Courtney breaks the kiss for a breath, tossing her purse behind her. “I love it when you don’t give a fuck.”

“I know you do.” Robert’s hand sneaks under her skirt to slide up her thigh, then goes straight for the sweet spot between her legs, brushing a finger over her tights. His brows quirk. “Jesus. You weren’t kidding.”

“Mm… No.” Courtney closes her eyes and lets out a shaky breath. She braces herself on the desk while her hips reluctantly move, meeting the strokes of his finger. “No, I wasn’t.”

His free hand takes a hold of her face, tilting it up, forcing her eyes to open and lock on his hungry browns. A moan crawls up her throat, but she bites it down, sinking her teeth into her lip. Her hips move a little faster, a little needier. Well, shit. There’s no saving her underwear now.

Robert’s lips curl into a proud smirk. “So impatient.”

“I mean,” Courtney sighs, “we gotta be fast about this if you don’t want us getting caught.”

“Screw fast. I’m taking my sweet time with you.” He brushes a thumb over her mouth, though his strokes slow, the tip of his finger dragging leisurely and her shaky legs all but close on it. “You’re telling me Sweetalker gets to spend more time with my girlfriend at this party than I do?”

“Oh fuck…” she breathes out, a little louder than she intended, but she can’t help it. She could never help it before, but especially now. Hearing that bitterness in his voice. Feeling it in the aggressive kiss he seals her lips with to cover her moans. Courtney keeps herself balanced on the desk with one hand so she can plunge her fingers in his hair with the other. Grabbing. Pulling. It’s her way of arguing back, because if she had a handle on what’s coming out for her mouth right now, she’d grill him for the fact that it was him who left her to fend for herself in the first place, and he’s got only himself to blame for Sweetalker coming to her rescue and saving her from blowing her brains out from boredom.

As if it’s punishment for the thoughts in her head, Robert takes his finger away. Courtney almost reaches for his hand to place it back where she wants it, but he doesn’t leave her hanging for long. His hand traces up, pausing at the waistbelt of her tights then slipping down two layers to find the heat of her skin directly. He rewards her short-lived patience with not one but two fingers. Holy fuck. She breaks the kiss to breathe, head falling against his chest. Her hips resume their grinding, desperate for more. If this is his way of apologizing, he should piss her off more often.

Through bleary eyes, Courtney notices that Robert himself could use some attention. She keeps her hold firm on his hair and uses her other hand to remedy that. Running a palm over the bulge in his pants forces a low exhale out of him. Music not just to her ears, but her body, so she keeps it up.

“To be honest, I’m thinking we call it a night and go home.” He kisses the side of her head, then moves to her ear. “Doubt I’ll be really done with you when we’re finished here.” Jaw. “And we might need the extra privacy, so I don’t have to worry about keeping you quiet.” And neck. “Also I don’t want that fucker near you again.”

This time there’s nothing stopping her moan from resonating throughout the room. Can’t even bring herself to keep working on him. Too much brain fog and the only trail she can follow is the one his fingers are drawing with every motion.

And then it all stops and Robert pulls away from her.

Courtney looks up, out of breath, out of strength. She rests her weight on the desk and watches as he reaches into the pocket of his pants and pulls out a familiar plastic wrapper. “What was that you said about this being a company event?” She nods at the condom with a furrowed brow. Not that she’s complaining. She tears the wrapper away from him to open it so he can make quick work of his belt and pants.

“Yeah.” He smiles. “I just always have to be prepared with you.”

“You’re not fucking fooling anyone, least of all me.” Courtney tugs him closer by the waistband of his boxers. “You love this as much as I do.”

Robert wordlessly steals the condom out of the open wrapper while she pulls his boxers down. He distracts her with a kiss, and another one. Then his hands grab her waist and bring her back to her feet—for a couple seconds anyway, enough for two more kisses, before he turns her around and bends her over the desk.

Oh. Okay. Sure. She’s game.

She pushes her purse to the side so she can lean on her elbows properly. Cool air hits her when her skirt rolls up, another wave once her tights and underwear are pulled down and her skin is exposed. His hands grab her hips firmly, shifting her slightly to the right. Courtney’s eyes shut in anticipation. Her breath catches the second she feels him press against her. But then nothing happens.

“Hey, uh, kinda flying blind here…” Robert says. And when she opens her eyes, she realizes she’s invisible.

“Oh, sorry…” Courtney breathes out, rematerializing in the process.

“It’s okay.” He chuckles. “Always flattered to know I still take your breath away.”

“Yeah, sure, whatever.” She smiles. “Can you shut the fuck up now and—”

He obliges, teasing his way in before fully pushing inside her and holy fuck her head is spinning.

“You know what? You’re right. I do love this,” he admits with a low groan, pulling slightly back, then pushing forth, and again. Courtney’s mouth falls with an uncontrollable stream of moans. “But it sounds like you love it a little more than I do.”

He’s not wrong. Not at all. She plants her face on the desk, hands grabbing onto the edge so she can push against his thrusts with her own hips.

Robert’s fingertips sink deeper into her sides, grip firming up and guiding her movements to match his. His breathing is heavy, labored, like he’s barely keeping himself together. Good. “I thought you hated skirts,” he grunts.

“But you don’t…” she manages to get the words out before he picks up the pace and the flood of moans resumes. Even if she can’t see his face right now, she can feel just how much he’s enjoying the view.

He releases her hips. One hand slips under her shirt, smooth and gentle as it works its way up to her breast and takes it with a squeeze. His other hand traces a path down her side, flirts with her inner thigh, then slowly, torturously, finds the spot aching for attention. But he doesn’t give it in full. He gives it in broken, light strokes. Almost barely touching her, but making sure there is enough friction to build up the desperate anticipation for more. Enough to make her hips break their synced rhythm with his thrusts in pursuit of the second source of pleasure. But no matter how hard she tries to get him where she wants, no matter how much she shifts around to place herself where she needs him, his finger flees, and it drives her to the brink of insanity.

“You’re such a fucking asshole,” Courtney grunts. She lets go of the desk to grab his wrist, forcing his hand to stay still so she can rub against him like she wants. Which he only allows her for a few seconds. The moment she loses her firm grip on him, he frees himself from her hold and cuts her pleasure short. Dick.

“That’s not how you say please.” Now he’s the one grabbing her wrist and pinning her arm to her back. The weight of his upper half slowly lies on top of her, and holy shit, that angle. That fucking angle! Judging by his own wavering voice, it’s working for him too.

The click of a handle, followed by a creak as the door opens.

Courtney’s blood drains in an instant. Her breath catches in her throat, and she holds it, disappearing almost immediately. This is far from being the first time something like this happened, but it still catches her off guard every single time. Also, it fucking sucks.

Robert’s weight lifts off of her, and she tries her best not to make a sound at the feel of him shifting inside her in the process. Her neck cranes so she can look at what’s happening. Behind her, Robert swiftly pulls his pants back up and stands incredibly still as a waiter stumbles in.

“Oh, hey, there!” the waiter startles. His imbalanced steps tell her he’s either high or tipsy or both. “Sorry, I didn’t know anyone was… Damn, I guess I forgot to lock the door earlier, whoops.” He lets out an awkward laugh. “Can I help you with anything?”

“No, thanks. Just trying to fight a headache,” Robert says, sparing the waiter a look from over his shoulder. “Needed to get away from all the, you know, loud music and loud people…”

“Oh, yeah, totally, dude. Can I get you something? Some water? Painkillers?” the waiter offers.

“Nope, I’m—” Courtney interrupts him with a rock of her hips, signaling for him to hurry this the fuck up. Just tell this loser to get lost or something. She’s always admired the way Robert keeps his composure in less than ideal situations. “I’m good,” he continues, and threatens her with a step back that nearly takes him out of her. “Just need a minute, or ten.”

“Right on, man. Feel free to help yourself to the booze here too, if you want. That’s what I’m here for.” The waiter grabs a couple bottles from one of the trays and retreats toward the door. “Feel better soon.”

“Thanks.”

As soon as the door shuts, Courtney rematerializes with an exhale.

“You happy?”

A sudden tightness in her chest. When she opens her mouth, she can barely form words. “Robert,” she gasps, “I need my—”

“Oh, shit, yeah. I gotchu.” He reaches for her purse and fetches the inhaler for her, gives it a quick shake, then holds it to her mouth and gives her a puff. She holds her breath for a few seconds. His gentle hand settles on her arm, giving it comforting rubs. “You good?”

“Fine,” she breathes out, reappearing. “Should’ve taken it before…”

“Yeah, I guess we were kinda lost in the heat of the moment.” He brushes her hair aside and leans over, pressing the softest kiss to her ear. “You wanna take a break? Pick this up at home?”

“Fuck no.” She rocks her hips against his for emphasis. “You better finish what you started.”

He chuckles. “Affirmative.”

She’s sure that was a trick question anyway because he pushes fully into her again without a second wasted. Courtney rests her head on folded arms, slowly drifting back into that state of foggy bliss. Losing herself in the mind-numbing feel of his length as it drags back and forth. He keeps her hips pinned in place, and she’s unable to pick up the pace or take the lead or even meet his movements. And she loves it. She loves it when he takes full control. She loves it when he does what he does with her because he knows what she wants him to do. She loves it when he reminds her just how weak she is for him and allows her to be. She loves how safe it feels to be weak with him.

He frees a hand and grabs her by the cheeks, peeling her head from her arms and tilting it up so her voice is no longer trapped against the surface of the desk. “It’s not just him, you know?” Robert says. Honestly she’s got no clue what the fuck he’s talking about. Doesn’t have the mind to figure it out either. “You don’t see how many people look at you. Or the way they look at you. You never notice how many heads you’re turning when you walk by… But I do.” His thrusts grow intense, as do her moans, and she can feel him—the louder she moans, the harder he gets, the more he throbs inside her, hitting all the right spots, all the good spots, all the—fuck.

“Robert…” she begs. So close. Just a little bit more. Just… His other hand answers her plea, fingers slipping back between her legs, and now her hips are free again to push back against him. His own movements grow erratic, the rhythm lost momentarily, and then found again as they both fall in sync and ride up the towering wave of pleasure.

“Fuck…” Robert groans. He lets go of her face to squeeze her breast again, this time over her shirt, twisting and twirling and teasing. His full weight crashes on top of her and there comes that brain-frying angle again. Holy shit. “Yeah, I … definitely … don’t hate the skirt.”

“Don’t…” she pants. “Don’t stop.”

“Wasn’t…” Grunt. “… Planning on it.”

And with every thrust, her muscles tighten around him. Her ragged breathing has her blipping in and out of sight by the second. And it takes one more flick to her nipple, one last push inside her, and the faintest brush of his finger against her sensitive flesh to send her flying all the way up to the top of that wave, reaching a high that leaves her floating with the clouds for a few, blissful seconds, before she slowly starts her way back down. Robert joins her a couple thrusts later, burying himself deep inside her with a groan. His face nuzzles into her neck to muffle the rest of his moans.

They stay still, waiting to recover, a mess of sweat and heavy breaths.

Courtney reaches up behind her to stroke his stubbled face, a satisfied smile drawing about her lips.

Robert turns his head and plants a tender kiss to her palm. Then another to her ear. “Just so you know,” his whisper tickles her skin, “you are mine.”

Courtney can’t help a snicker. “Fuck off.” She gives him a playfully shove with her hips and he lazily removes his weight from on top of her, allowing both of them to straighten up. She turns around to face him and he meets her with a quick peck on the mouth before stepping back.

While he looks for somewhere to discard the condom, she fixes her clothes and smoothes her hair. Not much she can do about the sweat, though, so that’s probably gonna be a giveaway.

“So…” Courtney says. “Should I head back out there first or do you wanna go?”

Robert throws the condom in a trashcan under the desk. He’s fixing his own clothes when he turns and meets her eyes with a frown. A hint of uncertainty seeping through. Maybe regret?

“Shit. Post-nut clarity’s coming down on you hard, huh?” she teases.

Robert’s head drops with a low laugh. A deep inhale. “I don’t wanna do this anymore, Court…”

“Hitting it from behind?” she jokes.

“Hiding.” He looks up again. The somberness in his voice makes her swallow a retort about superhero sex tapes. Clearly not the time for jokes. “I didn’t think it’d get to me, but I guess it’s that sort of thing where you can only hold a glass of water for so long before your arm starts to hurt.”

“Am I the glass of water?” Courtney asks, walking around the desk to stand in front of him.

He shakes his head. “I asked you to come with me tonight because … honestly, I don’t see the point in coming to these things without you. If I can’t share this part with you, I don’t want to have it.”

Courtney blushes. Well, leave it to Robert to make her feel more hot and flustered with his words than when he’s literally fucking inside her.

He reaches with his hand to stroke her face, a sticky thumb brushing against her cheek. “Sure. We wanted to take it slow, until we figured things out. And we have. But I’m just … sick of having to check the door twice before I can kiss you or hold your hand. Sick of pretending we’re less than what we are.”

There’s only a handful of people who know about them, and most of them don’t even work at Torrance anymore. So yeah, what started as a pretty much open secret eventually … became an actual secret. To the point where they wouldn’t go to these sorts of things together. To the point where they’d pretend they didn’t know each other beyond being work colleagues. And it made sense, at the time anyway. It was one thing when it was just Mecha Man in the spotlight, but now they’re both standing under it, and privacy has become a luxury they have to fight with tooth and nail to afford.

Courtney leans into his touch. She holds his hand in hers and kisses his palm. “Are you sure you want the public to know you’re dating me? Remember that smear campaign from like six months ago? That fucker that exposed the Z-Teamers’ criminal records? Remember how I was the biggest target of that campaign? And how some people are still calling for my downfall? Pretty sure the Make Invisigal Disappear hashtag was trending again just last month.”

Robert sighs. “I seem to remember you saying just a few minutes ago that you love it when I don’t give a fuck.”

“Well, sure,” she nods, “but this is like … a pretty giant fuck not to give.”

Robert shakes his head sideways. “So you will love me even more. I see that as a win.”

“Oh…” She gives him a quick kiss. “Well, in that case, maybe we can do something about that…”

Monday, April 1st, 2024. 6:37 A.M.

The continuous buzzing is what wakes her up. Courtney untangles herself from Robert’s embrace to reach for her phone on the bedside table. The screen brightness nearly blinds her as she reads the notifications. Messages for Alice.

“Everything okay?” Robert asks in a groggy voice.

Courtney opens the texts with a yawn.

A message that says: Girl u seen dis shit?? Then a bombardment of screenshots of various news articles.

Courtney holds the phone to Robert to show him.

“Ah, shit, that’s bright…” He squints, taking the phone from her to have a look. “Oh, cool. How long you think we’ll be trending for?”

“Alice is dropping her new album next week.” Courtney takes the phone back from him so she can return to his arms. “So probably not for long.”

“Right, yeah…” Robert fixes the blanket over them then kisses the back of her shoulder. “Well, that’s good then.”

Another text arrives.
