Work Text:

When the king in yellow first traveled into the Overworld from Carcosa during medieval times, it built a city-one he called the “Kingdom of Colors” due to how vibrant they accidentally made it and how many colorful creatures (Rainbow Crates, the race of all singular colored entities) came around to inhabit it. The KIY never expected to see so many Crates in one place, let alone see them at all. He had thought they were extinct by now, he had no knowledge of them living, despite having all the knowledge in the world. Or-his word, not the Overworld

The King in yellow had heard stories of how ruthless these Crates could be, how they almost wiped an entire kingdom of humans in the matter of just a few days. It turns out he was wrong, and so was his knowledge.

The first crate he interacted with–a hot pink Crate that went by the name “Whenster”-- had explained to him how the humans seemed to hate them, wanted to wipe out their race instead, almost wiped out the largest village in their land.

After so many years of hanging around in his kingdom, Whenster had taught the King how to gain a form similar to that of a Crate, a little humanoid form with fur, paws, tail, with some extra accessories like a basic suit, crown and veil attached to his crown.

This form made The King feel nice, he could look Whenster properly without needing to cover his face.

The King remembers when he and Whenster shared their first kiss in Crate form, when he first came up with an actual name, one Whenster had helped make-Kingten. It sounded…Nice, better than “The King In Yellow” or “Hastur”, it felt like…Him.

King had learnt quickly that Wenn-Whenster’s nickname- was an orphan, so therefore he was technically allowed to marry him, and so, the wedding began.

Kingten remembers the day he married Whenster, Whenster Mantann was his name. Kingten Mantann and Whenster Mantann-the two happily married, married under the support of the king’s own church, of his people, of the support of the other entities that knew of the man.

Oh but how that love wouldn’t last for long.

A man had come into the kingdom, he called himself “Derek”. Kingten didn’t trust him at first, but Whenster had convinced him to allow the man to stay just for a week, see if he was trustworthy.

They thought he was. The first day, he explored the place and got to know the people-even if they were weary of him (he never earned their trust). The second day, he helped an injured Crate heal his wounds (they were infected the next day). The third day, he offered a gift to Kingten, a bracelet of pure gold (Kingten didn’t want it, he re-fordged it into a clip for Whenster). The fourth day, he shows the blacksmith how to make lighter swords (the Blacksmith wasn’t paying attention to any of his words, barely understood Common). The fifth he offers food around to the Crates of the kingdom (most, if not all, take the food out of pity and feed it to their animals). On the sixth he was suddenly gone.

But the seventh day was one King couldn’t forget. Not in a million years.

Human troupes had invaded the kingdom suddenly, almost everyone in Color had gotten out that day. All except one.

The King In Yellow remembers holding Whenster’s hand as the latter slowly fades away, smiling weakly as he tries to reassure his love, his once forever. His now no longer.

The King in Yellow had sobbed that day-sobbed until he couldn’t feel himself anymore, burying Whenster under the castle gardens like he had asked to be.

The King had focused himself on ridding his kingdom of any humans so that his people could move back in, killing his mortal body in the process.

The King had barely remembered getting carried out into the castle gardens, forced into a forever sleep and buried next to Whenster, waking back up in Carcosa.

The King had never really thought he’d meet Whenster in Carcosa, and he never did. He wonders where his love is now-where that beautiful hot pink smile had gone after so many years or being together.

In the kingdom, a man by the name of “Heston” had stumbled into the previous kings’ chambers, he was nothing but a lowly butler, but the room was in horrid condition, so? He cleans it up, dusts everything off, folds the blankets back up, re-makes the bed for the next king, then he stumbles on a chest under the bed.

Tilting his head softly, Heston slowly opens it, gasping softly as he sees it.

One healthy pristine egg from a Crate, something similar to a magenta-gold color. He knew what this was.

It just needed to be taken care of correctly, then the next king or queen of Color could be born.

Whenster hadn’t left either of them completely, leaving his mark in an egg to the kingdom and as a lover to the now gone king.
