A Memory.

Summary:

Hiccup, finally convinced, turns around one last time before saying goodbye to go back to his father and Gobber, and waves at the gentle stranger who helped him.

The stranger smiles at him, although Hiccup can't see it, due to the perpetual blur on their face, he can feel that they're smiling warmly at him. And then they speak and, at last, he does remember their words:

“Goodbye, hatchling.”

Notes:

Hello! My name's Alex and this is my first ever post on Ao3. And my first post about HTTYD. I've been making my own AU about this fandom, especially about the first movie and if this little piece of my imagination is liked I'll keep writing!
English is NOT my first language, so please bear with me and correct me if I've made some mistakes.

Hope y'all like it <3

Work Text:

Hiccup Horrendous Haddock the Third dreams a lot. He does it everyday, every time he sleeps.
However, when he sleeps, he doesn't remember what he had dreamed. But he has one, one dream in particular that keeps reoccurring in his young mind.

He's alone, which isn't unusual but he's...in the forest.
He's sitting alone, on a rock, crying, mumbling. In the dream he sounds way younger than he is now. Probably between 5 and 6 years of age.

While crying, a noise is heard from behind him and a tall figure soon appears. The figure calls him, and afterwards speaks, soft and sweet, Hiccup doesn't remember the words, although he knows they are as gentle as a benevolent wind. The mysterious individual soon bends down in front of him and brushes the boy's cheek, making the tears staining them go away as they comfort him.

The image is fuzzy, unfortunately Hiccup can't make out the stranger's appearance, he wishes he could. He recalls only hair as black as the starless sky at night and a bright purple robe on the figure he dreams.

The stranger stands up then, reaches out with their hand, inviting the young Viking boy to take it. And Hiccup, hesitantly, takes it.

Then they are walking through the forest, trees passing by them as they go further and further. They walk and walk and walk until they reach the end of the forest, where wildness touches civilization.

Berk.

They reached Berk.

The mysterious stranger stops walking, so does Hiccup. They look down at him, they ruffle his hair a little, and gently, so gently, encourage him to move forward. To go home. Back to Berk.

However, Hiccup hesitates again, so the kind stranger bends down once more and Hiccup sees two eyes with the same colour as the forest's ground, looking at him fondly yet sadly.
They pet his cheek with sweetness, afterwards their hand moves to his back, turns him over a little and beckons him forward, towards his village.

Then he wakes up, smiling, thinking of this strange dream, but is it really *just* a dream?
