Work Text:
Tony Stark currently has exactly one (1) goal in life: surprise Matt Murdock. (Well, obviously, it has other goals. But those are nowhere near as important as jump-scaring its boyfriend.)
It's tried everything. Literally everything. It even got Clint to distract Matt while Tony snuck up behind them. But no matter what, Matt always knows it's coming.
It's on attempt number… it doesn't even know, now.
Matt should be home from work any minute now, and Tony's hidden away in his kitchen like a creep.
Tony freezes when the door opens. This is it. Either Matt's gonna notice it immediately (very likely), or Tony might finally, finally, succeed. (Far, far less likely.)
Matt steps inside with a sigh, shutting the door behind him. A little rough, if Tony were to say.
Tony holds its breath, eyes wide as it waits for.. something. Usually by now Matt's already calling out that, "you know, you're not as stealthy as you think." But nothing happens. Matt just continues on his routine. Like Tony isn't even there. Like he doesn't notice Tony there.
Okay. Okay. Stay calm. Don’t blow it now.
Matt walks further into the apartment, finally close enough that Tony can peek out and see him. He looks genuinely worn down, shoulders tense under his dress shirt, tie already loosened.
Tony almost abandons the mission right there. Almost.
But then Matt passes the kitchen entrance without so much as a pause, and Tony’s competitive spirit violently overpowers whatever else is running through its mind.
Tony slowly slips around the corner, careful to stay quiet. It leans against the wall casually.
"Mr. Murdock," it calls out, doing the most "business-y" voice it can manage, considering its boyfriend is standing across the room.
"Oh, shit!" Matt yelps. He jerks, dropping the papers he’d just picked up, spinning toward Tony with wide eyes and his hands already half-raised defensively.
"Ha! I got you!"
“You—” Matt starts, then promptly cuts himself off with laughter. “You scared the hell out of me.”
"I did it," Tony sighs, pushing off the wall. "Fuck yeah."
"Are you serious?"
"Do you know how long I've been trying to do that for?"
“You are such a dork.”
"A victorious dork." Tony grins, entirely unrepentant. "Your victorious dork.”
Matt reaches out once Tony steps into his space, fingers brushing up Tony’s arms until he finds its face. “Congratulations,” he murmurs. “You win.”
Tony leans into the touch automatically. “Best day of my life.”
“Bit dramatic.”
"Always am, baby," Tony presses a kiss to Matt's cheek. "Rough day?"
"Mm, just the usual."
"You sure? You're exhausted." Tony pulls Matt's glasses off, placing them on the table. "You should sit down." Tony starts steering him toward the couch by the shoulders.
Matt lets himself be guided, tired enough not to argue much. Tony notices a slight limp now too.
“Matthew.”
“I’m fine.”
“You’re limping.”
"Part of the job."
Tony huffs, pushing Matt lightly onto the couch before bending down to pull his shoes off.
"I can take them off myself, Tony," Matt complains, though he doesn't move to stop it.
"Don't care," Tony places them to the side before sitting down beside Matt. "C'mere."
Matt goes willingly, folding into Tony’s space. Head against his shoulder.
Tony wraps its arms around him automatically, pulling his legs up over Tony's own. One hand moves up to run through Matt’s hair. The other rubbing slow circles into his thigh.
"Just so you know, this is the greatest thing I've ever accomplished."
“Your greatest accomplishment is breaking into a blind man's apartment and scaring him?”
"Indeed it is." Tony presses a kiss to Matt’s hair. “And I’ll cherish it forever.”
