Work Text:
Cyrus helped Mike out of his suit jacket, rubbing an affectionate hand across his back. “You alright?” He asked quietly.
Mike nodded, his eyes still somewhat frantic.
If today had ended the way Cyrus had thought it would, he would have given Mike hell for the way he’d chewed him out over his actions. He understood that he’d fucked up and he of all people should’ve known better. That didn’t give his partner the right to talk to him like that, personally or professionally.
None of that mattered when the look of shock and terror on Mike’s face was still fresh. His hands still shook with anxiety and his breathing was shallow. It could wait for another day when the murder attempt wasn’t quite so fresh.
Apparently his lover didn’t agree. “M’sorry, about earlier,” Mike started.
“I know, it’s alright,” Cyrus soothed. He was slipping off Mike’s suit, stripping him down.
Mike let him do all the work. He did that sometimes, let Cyrus just take care of it all. It could be tough to cajole him into letting himself be pampered though.
“No,” he groaned softly. “It’s not.”
Cyrus started dressing him in those expensive cotton pajamas. He didn’t say anything, hoping he’d let it go.
Mike continued anyway. “You were in the wrong, but it should’ve been a civil conversation.”
“Later,” Cyrus chided. “You’re going to crash soon.”
“Mmph.”
“Or now. Go to sleep, we can talk later.” Cyrus rubbed at the tense shoulders. He guided Mike to lie under the covers. He took a couple of minutes to finish up his routine and then joined his partner in bed.
“Thank you, for not letting me get shot while taking a piss. You’re a good cop.”
“Uh huh.”
“And you’ll be a good lawyer.”
“Okay.”
“Also you’re very sexy.”
Cyrus chuckled. “Sleep.”
“I love you so much. I was angry that you, you of all people, messed up like that. You know better. You are better than that. But I shouldn’t have talked to you like that.”
“Yeah, well, you’re better than that too. Now, shut up and go to sleep."
When Cyrus opened his eyes, Mike was lying on his back staring at the ceiling. A quick glance at the alarm clock let him know it was too damn early in the morning. The sun was just barely starting to rise. They both had the day off, so Mike should've still been sound asleep.
Cyrus put a heavy arm over Mike's stomach and pulled him closer. He'd thought something like this might happen.
The first time an officer confronted their mortality was when they discovered if he was going to make it. Haunted by the thought that they could've been killed they either had to choose to move past it, or quit.
Lawyers didn't normally have to confront their own death like that though.
"How do you do it, knowing you could be killed at any time?" Mike asked.
"I just make a choice to live with the fear. I know that if I'm killed it'll be during something I truly believe in. Most of the time I'm not afraid to die just by going to the bathroom though."
The joke fell flat, but Mike smiled anyway. He always did.
"You'll be alright," Cyrus told him quietly.
Mike sighed, "I really hope you're right."
