Chapter 1: Imperial Family Address

Chapter Text

I will try to update this as needed as story arcs continue, using spoiler text as I deem fit (and as I remember, lol). I decided to use different language variants of 'uncle' to help specify which Primarch uncle I was talking about, but I may have made the issue more complicated instead, whoops.

  • Big E - Avus (Latin 'grandfather'; I will mainly use 'grandpa' in English because [1] it's funny and [2] to avoid Nurgle's nickname)
  • Lion - Tad (Welsh 'father')
  • II - Tío (Spanish 'uncle')
  • Jaghatai - Avga (Mongolian 'paternal uncle, seniority unspecified')
  • Leman Russ - Farbror (Norwegian or Swedish 'paternal uncle')
  • Rogal Dorn - Stryj (Polish 'paternal uncle')
  • Sanguinius- Ammā (Assyrian Neo-Aramaic 'uncle')
  • Ferrus Manus - Dėdė (Lithuanian 'uncle')
  • SpoilerXI - Uncail (Irish 'uncle')
  • Roboute Guilliman - Patruus (Latin 'uncle')
  • Vulkan - Amang (Sudanese 'younger brother of parent')
  • Corvus Corax - Paman (Malay 'uncle')
  • -
  • Luther - Taid (Welsh 'grandfather', North Wales usage)
  • Maegon - Nain (Welsh 'grandmother', North Wales usage)
  • -
  • SpoilerThe Lady of the Lake - Haruni (Quenya, 'grandmother')
  • -
  • Gryphon - Neptis (Latin 'granddaughter'), Cyw (Welsh 'chick')

Disclaimer: Languages for the different primarch homeworlds were selected based off of Vibes. Please do not interpret my selections in light of real world politics. Some were obvious choices, others less obvious. I wanted to branch out past western Europe or at least the British Isles, as there's a bit of a bias there in canonical lore, lol.

I am obviously the only person in the world who gets East / Southeast Asian vibes from Corvus, and I made his selection because [1] I liked the Malay word in a list of terms for 'uncle' from around the world and [2] picking Japanese would have made me feel like (more of) a weeb. Maybe I should have embraced the weebness and chosen Japanese anyway. Too late now, lol.

Only after the idea of Polish!Rogal was suggested to me and I liked it did I learn that 'Rogal Dorn' was apparently meant to mean 'royal fist' in Irish. Also too late now, lol. And as I said, I wanted to branch out past western Europe. I felt the terseness of the Polish language was a nice fit. Ironically, he and Konrad competed in my head for who got to claim German. The fact we do have canonical examples of Nostraman words, however, means I'm still figuratively poking Konrad with a stick and wondering what to do with him.

I continue to welcome suggestions for languages for the other primarchs' homeworlds, as I haven't made up my mind for most of them. I might not get to use most of them, but it would be nice to have those details fleshed out and ready if I do get to use them. :)

Roboute got to claim Latin Gothic because Perturabo has the greater claim to Greek Mykene.

Admittedly, I enjoy the idea of assigning Hispanic / New World Spanish to Colchis, as opposed to Spain / Old World Spanish to II's homeworld of Ardamantua, because the idea of II and Lorgar (in the brief time they had to be acquainted) yelling at spiritedly debating each other over differences in their languages amuses me. And as you should know by now, most of my writing decisions for this work are made on the basis of 'It Amused Me'. Plus, it'd fit one of the chief exports of Colchis being holo-novella dramas...
