Chapter Text

Med beds cleaned? Check.

Counter with medical instruments organized? Check.

Lab coat nice and tidy? Check.

Updated crewmate bio-scans documented into the system? Che-

Oh. Only mine's in there.

The woes of seniority— always so much to do, and so much to take care of. Being one of the few non-budget hires for MIRA is difficult as it is, always felt like they were Atlas carrying the world on their shoulders.

But it was alright, they liked to keep busy; keeps the mind sharp. Or perhaps they were just insane. Being surrounded by white walls and medical equipment can do that to someone.

Blue hears the screech of rubber feet behind them, followed by the steps of a few others.

“Oh..! Hello Doctor..”

They turn, seeing a familiar HR rep and two new faces.

“Hello.” Blue says in their sultry voice.

Orange starts fumbling with a red ball, short nervous laugher leaving their lens. The two new crewmates stand behind them, looking over the orange one’s shoulder.

“..Trust ball?” Orange mindlessly throws it at them, which Blue makes sure to catch with grace.

This game?  Perhaps it doesn't hurt to entertain this audience a bit…

Without skipping a beat, Blue relays to their crewmates a bit about themself; their time in Unyria.. What it means to build trust.. Perhaps a little redundant to them but it really was a time they always harked back to.

Oh, sweet memories..

They throw the red ball back at the crowd, expecting one of them to catch it, but alas they’ve become entranced by their…. incredible hotness. The green one’s visor cracks on impact.

“...You’rethemostattractivepersonI’veeverseen.” They spit out, unfazed by their broken equipment.

“Lets not objectify the hot doctor~”

The white one remained speechless.

The trio leave quickly, giggling between themselves. Blue huffs, satisfied with their result.

-

Blue steps into the captain's quarters, the automatic doors closing behind him.

The doctor knew that the captain may be rather busy, flying the ship and all, but duty calls.

The red captain was a newbie; replacing the old, maroon one who recently retired.

They were gonna miss that old dog… always coming into their office and inquiring about their-

Suddenly, Red turns their head quickly and shrieks in a way that sounds like a woman being seen in her under garments. A little perplexed, Blue looks up to see their screen on a video game.

“Oh-oh.. Hello, Blue— doctor- Doctor Blue..” Red jumps off their chair and faces them eagerly, their visor wide like puppy eyes. Red stood in front of them at attention.

Now were they the captain? Or has it secretly been Blue all along?

Red seems to have caught themselves, instantly playing it off and clearing their throat. Blue stifles a laugh, trying not to insult their new superior.

“Heh, why Blue.. didn’t expect to see you on this fine.. uh.. day?”

Ah yes, time is rather confusing when on missions. Seems Red still needs some adjusting.

“Well, captain.. I don’t mean to disturb you and your virtual-tilling activities..” Blue prefaced with a hand at their heart, covering their tease.

“But I need updated bio-scans of all the crewmates.”

“Oh! Well.. uh.”

Red turns around suddenly, looking down at something. It sounded like they were flipping through a book? And they were mumbling.

Red turns back to Blue again.

“Yes! Of course, no biggie! Would you like me to gather the team?” Red has their chest puffed out and index finger to the ceiling. This time, Blue couldn't help but let out a little chuckle— the innocence of youth could be quite delightful to witness.

“Why yes, that would be quite helpful…” Blue could already see Red’s metaphorical tail wagging as soon as they uttered the h-word.

“But.. seeing as you’re already here..” Blue leans in, closing the gap between them.

Blue looked into the visor of the captain, feeling the hot breath of their superior waver against their rubber body. Red’s legs grew weak, their fingers floating in the air like they didn’t know where to place them.

“Would you like to be the first to be scanned?”

A tiny wince escaped from the red one’s lens followed by a shiver of their spine.

Swoon~

“..Y-yes..!..?”

“Well that’s wonderful! Come along now to the med bay!” Blue backs up and walks towards the door. Red freezes, then snaps out of the spell with a tension-releasing sigh.

The captain skips over to Blue, nervous energy still emanating from under their body; together, they prance to Blue’s office.

-

My, quite the audience I gathered out there!

No need for the captain to call the team; quite convenient really. It started with Red following them, then Orange suddenly tagged along..

Then Black, then Cyan, then White and Green… then Yellow and Brown came around the corner..

Even the Purple one that hates everybody! Wow~

One by one, each crewmate got their bodies scanned and updated to the system. They were all very eager to chat it up with the doctor, and Blue responded the best they could. A bit of flirtatious comments here, a bit of wisdom, and a bit of a cat and mouse thing to spice up the conversation.. But Blue knows their position here— they can't get distracted!

“Well, thanks for the medical check, Doc,” Green says in their naïve voice. The intern sat in the med bed, swinging their legs in the air.

“No, thank you~ The cooperation between this ship's crew is vital to keep my operations a float; and you are a great asset to this team!”

Green laughs foolishly, the redness of their cheeks glowing through their suit.

Blue helps them up with a hand, and watches them out the door with a wave. Green doesn't watch where their going and hits the doorway on their way out.

Blue yells out for the next crewmate, in which came Yellow.

“Well hey there doctor.. I’m ready to give myself to you~”

Blue simply smiles under their visor as they show their new patient to their spot. Yellow happily jumps up and swings their legs too, much like the five others before them.

Blue turns and flips through the remaining evaluation packets that are still yet to be done..

They found Yellow’s.. And they still needed to do Brown, which shouldn’t be too hard to find since they and Yellow are practically attached by the hip.

But the last packet of papers was of someone Blue was half-hoping they didn’t have to do..

After all, Lime doesn't exactly show themselves, especially to the doctor.

-

To say Lime was a tad, even a little, a squish… annoying to deal with… wouldn’t be wrong.

They made their job harder than it already is, having to shed one's own integrity as a medical professional.

Blue’s conspiratorial coworker wasn’t fond of anything that invaded their temple; not their mind, not their body, and especially their property. Most of the time Blue wouldn’t be able to fill out Lime’s packet as thoroughly as they wanted with how cagey they were.

How they managed to even get employed with MIRA was a bit of a mystery seeing as how paranoid they were of control of any kind. Suppose everyone sells their souls to some extent.

But as tedious a job was, a job was a job. Especially a job that paid so, so handsomely.. (not really)

Blue sets Lime’s evaluation packet down on the counter and cracks their fingers. Their vent-crawling engineer was in those ducts day-in and day-out, hardly ever joining the tables for a meal.

They opened the grate, the squeaking hinges echoing through the dark chamber.

When they first started working on the ship, Blue’d never expected those irrational mumblings of 5G towers and laser-shooting interdimensional squids could come in handy.

“It was now time to look a gremlin in the eye!” Blue yelled through the metal tubes.

Through the dark cavern of the vents was probably Lime’s “room”, doing who-knows-what and whispering ideas through the AC.

It took a while to discover exactly which conspiracies Lime responded to best, but as soon as Blue heard those hurried metal scampers, they knew they got Lime on their clutches.

“DON'T DO IT! You’ll fall in love!” The lime one bursts out the vent, nearly hitting the doctor square on the visor.

Blue’s lens glints, quickly reaching a hand out to Lime to steady them. The vented one flinches, looking down at the outstretched appendage, then looking up to the looming blue figure above.

“Why.. you scared it away.. Thank you for saving me~” Blue congratulates, their voice deep and buttery, and romantic music playing somewhere in the background.

Lime stares for a moment, unphased. Blue sweats.

“Heh, you're welcome. Love and peace with ya!” Lime begins to leave.

Okay, maybe I don’t have this down as much as I thought.

“W-while I have you here, would you mind taking your scan? It's time to get them updated, y'know.”

Poor choice of words, somehow.

Lime immediately bursts into a wide-visored tirade, their information being sold and their organs mapped out.. something about poisoned pizza crusts?

As ridiculous as it seemed to the average crewmate, it was pure unadulterated fear in their lenses; it’d be heartless not to feel at least a little bad.

Blue reaches out, a gentle palm on Lime’s knuckles which makes them flinch. Lime blinks, their breath hitched suddenly with the touch.

“Now I’ll be the first to admit that the medical community has a lot to apologize for..”

There wasn't much else Blue could do but reassure the older crewmate, apologizing to Lime personally for the transgressions of medical history. Lots of horrible things had to happen to get to where things are now, so an apology is long overdue.

Lime listened, the eloquent words formed by their gruff voice putting the engineer in a trance. Lime relaxed, their hands not gripping the edge of the vent as tightly as before; it seems that Blue hit the nail right on the head.

Blue took their distraction as their chance, moving to gently heave Lime up and lifting them out of the vent. Lime grunted, displeased with the unpermitted touching and squirming under the doctor's fingers.

A bright red flush covered the rubber under their visor; As soon as Blue set them down, Lime distanced themselves, shooing the doctor away frantically but staying silent to listen.

“Now Lime, I know you have your personal beliefs but wouldn't you agree that with trust between our crew, we can strive for the health of one's ownself? It's not purely for the physical body, but for the mind as well.”

Lime remained unconvinced, lens squinting at the doctor. Blue leads Lime to the bio-scan with a deliacte touch of the backpack.

“And with a strong mind, you can overcome even the strongest of signals from information-steal cellular towers.”

“Uh huh..” Lime says, amused.

“To save your kidneys from being taken by hungry iron-deficient gremlins.”

“Yeah..” Lime jumps up the scanner.

“To stick it to everyone that you were right about the space eggs on board!”

"YEAH!"

"That's more like it!" Blue unconsciously pats Lime on their head, messy-ing their bandana.

Suddenly, Lime jolts, and throws Blue’s hand away from them.

For a moment, Blue thinks they just ruined their opportunity. Lime groans, staring daggers at the doctor as they adjusted their headwear.

“B-But I’m watching you shred my scans when you’re finished..” The engineer scowls at the doctor.

Blue sighs in relief. The information automatically notes things into the system anyway, so shredding physical scans wouldn’t do much but help Lime sleep easy.

The engineer hopped up the bio-scanner, but remains guarded and suspicious. It wasn't the best pose to be in for the scanner, but for Lime, it was the next Blue was gonna get.

-

The doctor downs their fifth.. or sixth cup of coffee.

What was once a spotless countertop was now littered with papers, cups, and vials of their crewmate’s samples.

To give health advice to one's crewmates, then to turn around and sacrifice some precious sleeping hours to finish your tasks is quite hypocritical.

To Blue, it was just what makes one human..

Or rather, a crewmate.

But Blue severely underestimated the time it would take to complete everybody’s bio-profiles. Just how much needed to be updated manually was a nightmare— how does MIRA not have an automated system to update ages with their birthday?!

And putting the new crewmates into the system, noting down some undisclosed medical issues from a certain crewmate… then the power went out for a moment, and they had to do the whole thing all over again!

They’re tired, and really wished that they could be sound asleep to the white noise of medical-machine droning; but they just had to finish Lime’s profile. Then it was time to get under the silky white sheets of one of the med beds.

But boy, was there a lot to update with Lime.. squishy-bone syndrome… their evaluation of their mental state.. but it was the home stretch..

When a task needs to be done, they just start itching to finish it before waking hours come back around. It’s not a very pretty side of themselves, their workaholic tendencies; but it was their duty.

…Perhaps this is what’s driving them insane, Blue jokes to themselves.

Blue hears a slow creaking from behind them, making their rubber skin crawl.

Blue swivels around quickly, scanning the room with their half-lidded visors. The med bay doors were closed for the night, but that’s all they could really observe; it was far too dark to see anything…

But from the corner of the visor, they see movement.

“Hey!” Blue calls out tiredly.

They hear the metal grate slamming shut.

Blue jumps down their chair and cautiously investigates with a flashlight. They peer into the vent, seeing nothing; only an empty void.

..Perhaps it was time to go get some shut-eye..
