Work Text:

The Festival.

The day that Berdly was all too excited for; he'd choose his perfect player-two to take to the Hometown event, whoever it may be. He could barely even sleep he was so excited for the event.

Berdly woke up extra early that fateful morning, taking the time to thoroughly preen his feathers, clean his beak, hell, he even trimmed his talons and ironed his clothes, even though they weren't wrinkly.

He knew the Festival wouldn't be ready until noon and later, but he needed to make sure he was prepared. For who? Well, it would be a three-way tie. His dear friend Noelle, which would be a pity-date if they did end up going, Susan, beloved cool gamer girl, and.. Kris. Kristine. Kristopher. THAT Dreemur.. Rival since forever. He lightly shook his head and clicked his tongue at the mere thought of them.

There wouldn't be any trouble with them, though! He was sure to find a suitable festival partner before he flocked to THEM for companionship.

Maybe his cheeks did heat up at the thought of it, but that's irrelevant. It's just the weather.

Berdly went about his typical routine now, making himself a perfectly balanced breakfast of birdseed and fruit. Alone. His parents weren't home very often, as they both usually worked out of town for most hours of the day. It got a fair bit lonely at times, but with the usual company of Noelle and occasionally Kris, it got easier to handle. Of course, he couldn't forget his obligatory hour of Super Smashing Fighters, just incase Kris wanted to challenge them to another gaming sesh today. He'd be ready to beat them fair and square, once and for all.

The minute he peeked out his house and saw the festival starting up, he shot up from his chair and scrambled through his house until he was out his front door. He knew exactly where to wait, but this certain booth had caught his attention.

He could vote for who would be crowned King and Queen for the festival.. A soft, darker blue dusted the avians cheeks. He had the urge to write down a certain someone as his 'Queen', though it'd be more Monarch.

Berdly forced himself to look away from the stand. He had to give everyone else a chance to be his queen, too! turning his head 180 degrees before getting a weird from Cattenheimer and running off. Finally, Berdly had reached his destination. A mere few feet away from where Cattenheimer was, in front of a odd tilted house.

There he waited until he saw his faithful suitors come into view. Kris leading the party as always, Susie trailing close behind, and Noelle trailing even closer to Susie. His face immediately split into his procacious grin, standing tall and proud in front of the three.

"My dearest Noelle! There you are! Let's go!" Berdly grinned, putting his hands on his hips. "Love captain speaking! Set thrusters to—" Before he could say his line, Noelle shyly interrupted him.

"Um.. Berdly? You're a great friend, but.. I don't.. Want to be your pity date." Noelle gave a nervous smile, not making eye contact with Berdly.

"Oh." Berdly should've known that, as the phone call he had with Noelle only a day earlier had said this already. He walked over to Susie.

"Well then, Susan, I suppose today is your lucky day…" The avian smugly stood taller.

Susie immediately shut his advances down. "I'm with Noelle, dumbass!"

"Oh."

With a hammering heart, he turned to Kris. They stood emotionless, and still.

"Kris.. Kris Kross Applesauce.." Berdly started, eyes closed and face disapproving.

"We, uh, need them." Susie quickly interrupted, putting a hand on Kris' shoulder.

Berdly felt his grin waver, feeling the embarrassment wash over him, but he quickly thought of a plan. After a moment of silence, he opened his beak to speak, but Kris spoke first.

"Nah. It’s alright. I'll go with Berdly." They mumbled in their quiet, monotone voice. Kris tilted their head down, but Berdly could see a slight trace of blush. Susie and Noelle gave them a look of disbelief, Berdly in a similar state.

"You're.. Gonna go with B-Berdly?" Noelle asked, looking astonished.

Susie elbowed them. "Dude, you.. really wanna go with Berdly? I mean.. I can't stop ya, I guess.." She snorted.

Berdly gave them a proud, appreciative look. "Ah, Kris.. I suppose I am stuck with you for this festival. 3rd-in-class. Well, we best make the most of it!" He held out his wing for Kris to take, which they did. Berdly felt his cheeks heat up, and sweat began to accumulate on his neck. Why did Kris agree to attending the festival with him!? Why did they say it so shyly?

While Berdly was caught up in his thoughts, Noelle and Susie walked off to go check out the food booths. Kris has to tug on Berdlys arm to snap him back to reality.

They trailed behind Noelle and Susie, at first in silence for a moment, then Berdly spoke up.

"So, m'they'dy'.. What'll it be? Where shall we go first? It's only fair I let you pick first." His chest feathers puffed out, feeling proud and like a true gentleman to Kris.

They had a look of absolute horror on their face, but it was oddly.. amused. "Don't call me that again. Ever." Kris grumbled quietly. "Food. Let's go find some food." Honestly, they were starved. The only time they really remember to eat is when the soul forces them.

"Hmph. Not a fan of nicknames, my dear Kris? But, yes. We should fill our stomachs. Can't have my player-two going hungry! Make haste, Kristopher!" Berdly squawked, letting Kris lead them by hand to wherever they were going.

Kris stopped in front of QC's Dinner, where a purple rabbit and her sister were selling baked goods. The two walked up to the booth.

"Ah! Kris and…Berdly? What.. brings you two here to the festival? Together?" QC inquired, tilting her head.

It was quite the odd sight, seeing Berdly and Kris hand-in-hand, all dressed up for the festival. Both faintly blushing, even if Berdly had feathers covering his blush.

"Just enjoying the wonders of the Hometown festival with my new player-two is all!"

Kris shot her a look that said 'Don't question it.', which she seemed to accept.

QC nodded. "Mhm.. Well, could I interest you two in a rolled up mega cinnamon bunny? One for only 13!"

Berdly turned to Kris. "Hmm.. I assume you didn't bring any money for this festival?" He asked, an eyebrow raised.

Kris shook their head, but gestured to Berdlys pockets with a knowing look.

"Tsk tsk tsk.. How careless. Where would you be without me, dear Kris? Starved. That's where." He clicked his tongue but pulled out some money, passing it over to QC in return for two cinnamon bunnies. Once they got their food they made their way to a nearby sidewalk to enjoy the treat.

A moment of silence passed, the only thing being heard was Berdly pecking at his food and Kris obnoxiously smacking their lips, definitely intending to tick off Berdly. And, it worked.

"Were you raised in a barn, Kris? Eat like a civilized person. And quit smacking in my ear!" Berdly shot them a annoyed look. Kris only grinned.

Berdly was about to spit out a string of insults towards Kris, but the sight of Noelle and Susie walking over to them stopped him quickly.

"So.. You two. How's the festival going, Kris?" Noelle asked with a small smile, seeming amused. It seems they both accepted the fact that Kris and Berdly were each others dates for today and stopped questioning it.

"You nerds having fun? Heh.. bet that's hard with Berdly around, huh?" Susie nudged Kris with her foot, mouth full of octopus dough balls that Noelle definitely paid for.

"He's not that bad so far." Kris signed, to which Susie snorted. Berdly was talking with Noelle to notice their conversation.

"Sure he is.. Hey. We're gonna walk around for a bit then get some ice cream. Then, uh. Gonna probably ride the ferris wheel.. with Noelle. Then go down to the lake. You guys should tag along, if you want. Can't stop you from just, uh. Sitting here and doing nothing with bird-brain." She explained, glancing at Noelle ever so often.

Kris just nodded silently, and Susie did too.

Berdly and Kris both stood up to tag along with the two girls, trailing them behind but close.

"Ah.. Noelle and Susie have grown so close! I'm so glad that Noelle was able to get over her poor crush on me.. Surely tragic, but it could never be, Kris. And I have now gotten over Susie." Berdly said with a happy sigh, eyes blissfully closed. "And now, I am Noelle's trusty wingman."

The human shot him a weird look, eyes narrowing. How could they let the SOUL let them do something so.. Stupid? With this stupid bluebird? The same one that always seemed to make their SOUL race now.

Suddenly, Kris grabbed Berdlys hand again, and lead his down this short stretch of road, stopping in front of the police station.

"K-Kris? Do we always have to go off-route? At least tell Noelle where we're going! Where are you leading-"

They stopped in front of this hammer mini game, being monitored by Nabstablook. Usually it'd be Undyne, but.. the thought of her made Kris nauseous. What could be inside the shelter with her.

Berdlys loud, squawky voice (un)fortunately snapped them out of it. "Ah! You must want to test the strength of our bonds, hm? How thoughtful!" Berdly grinned, already reaching for the red hammer.

"Kristine, give it your all!" He challenged, watching Kris grab it also. He adjusted his grip so his hands went over Kris', getting more grip to ensure the strongest swing together.

"On three! One, two, three!" Berdly announced, swinging down with all his strength. It squeaked against the red button, barely being enough to make it ring. But, it rang, nonetheless.

"Ha! I should've known.. Our bond is just too strong, Kris.. It's almost unfair to the other partners! This mini game is too easy for two exceptional gamers like ourselves." Berdly didn't even realize he was still holding the hammer, but Kris certainly did. Kris wasn't even listening to whatever Berdly was babbling on about.

Their eyes were glued to Berdlys hands, still practically holding theirs. The warmth of it all made their SOUL pound against their chest like it was trying to escape. They wondered if Berdly would let go anytime soon. A small part of them didn't want him to.

"..Kris? Kris! Are you even listening to me? You aren't getting tired, are you? We've still got a lot to do!" Berdly let go of the hammer to lightly shake Kris.

"I know." They mumbled absentmindedly, avoiding eye contact with the avian.

"Let's go catch up with Noelle and Susie.. I conclude their already at the ferris wheel! We best hurry to catch up!" Berdly urged, this time taking Kris' hand to pull them back to the main road, leading down to where the ferris wheel is.

Kris was all to aware of how warm and large Berdlys hand was. It was soft, too. The feathers felt like a dream to hold, all the preening Berdly talks about really does do him good.

"..Kris? Are you alright?" For Berdly, it was hard to make out their expression, as it's almost always obscured by their hair. He let go of the hammer to lightly shake the human, which snapped them out of it.

"I'm fine, Nerdly.." They mumbled, shoving Berdlys hand off their shoulder, hoping he couldn't feel the sweat beading on their hands. "..Last one to Susie's a rotten egg." Kris gave a small grin, before immediately taking off in a sprint down the street yet again.

"Hey! Kris, wait—" Berdly paused in shock for a moment, before quickly taking off after Kris. There was no way in hell he'd let them win in another one of these challenges! Berdly would never let himself lose to the 3rd in class.

It was a very short run, but Berdly was winded nonetheless. At last, Kris had beat him to Noelle and Susie, who were standing in front of the ferris wheel, with Noelle giggling into her hand and Susie talking to an out of breath Kris. Since when did they run so fast?!

"K-Kris! That was immature, even for you! I-I wasn't ready," Berdly huffed, panting and adjusting his clothes. His feathers were all ruffled up from both running and being slightly flustered.

"Should've kept up, birdie. You're the rotten egg." Kris gave him a small grin, turning to Berdly after whispering something to Susie, too which she snorted and whispered something back.

"I was keeping up! Y-You, just.. Caught me off guard was all! Don't think I won't get you back for this.. act of humiliation!" Berdly gave them an annoyed look, smoothing down his feathers.

Noelle lightly patted Berdlys shoulder and gave him a pittying smile. “You know how Kris is.. Don’t let them get to you! They mean well.. Fahaha, I'd know."

"Not my fault you were the rotten egg.” Kris poked Berdlys side, giving him a fiendly smile, looking a t him through their bangs.

"Tch—What does a 'rotten egg' even imply? I should've known this would've happened if i were to attend this with you.. Alas, you were the only one available." Berdly shook his head, looking away and crossing his arms.

“Hey! The suns setting. We should hurry to get on before this ends and closes up.” Susie announced, leaning an arm on Kris’ shoulder, practically resting herself on them.

“Ah! Of course!” Noelle quickly perked up, looking to Susie, then too Kris, then to Berdly. She felt bad for making Berdly go with Kris. Knowing them, they'd probably shake the cart to scare him and annoy him the entire time. But, her SOUL told her to continue with Susie, just to share one last moment with her before the night ends. They all had spent more time here than they were expecting, just talking and walking around with their respective partners. Their parents probably expected them home soon.

“Well? Let’s hurry then! They'll close down the festival soon!" Berdly immediately rushed over to who was holding the stand for the ferris wheel. It was a familiar skeleton in a blue sweater. They’ve all seen him in ‘Sans. Kris knows his face too well. Sans couldn't see their glare, but he certainly felt it.

“hey. wanna ride the ferris wheel?” Sans asked, winking at the group.

Susie and Noelle shared blushing glances, but Noelle turned to Kris just to make sure she got their opinion too.

“..So, Kris, um. Who do you wanna ride with?” She asked, giving them a smile. Berdly immediately perked up.

“Ah, Noelle.. I fear my dear Kris will be riding with me! ” Berdly declared, pulling Kris into a ferris wheel cart. They didn’t seem to complain or resist.

Berdly sat in front of them, feeling himself blush from the proximity. The cabin wasn't the biggest for two to ride. At first it was silent, before Kris spoke up.

“Hey. Berdly..” Kris started, looking away from Berdly and out the window. They could see Susie and Noelle entering a cabin together, Noelle looking absolutely awestruck she was able to do this with Susie.

“What, Kris? Are you going to apologize for playing that immature stunt you did earlier? I’d hope so!” Berdly squawked, following Kris’ gaze. The sunset was quite pretty, he and to admit. Berdly didn’t go out often or late enough to see the sunset like this.

“..You know, I was gonna say something genuine, but since you said that i think i’ll refrain.” Kris deadpanned, looking back at Berdly.

“Wha- No! I-I retract my prior statement!” Berdly immediately perked up, looking right at Kris now. “Kris.. Pray tell.” He leaned forward, eyes wide and curious.

“Uh, how about.. No?” Kris smirked and pushed Berdlys face back. That stupid devilish smile of theirs. The one they always were when they knew they were ticking someone off or doing something evil.

“Kris! You know better than to say things like that! Just say it! Please.” Berdly practically begged, dropping the smart demeanor just for a moment in hopes to hear what they were gonna say. “I won't tell a soul if that’s what you are worried about! Not even Noelle.”

“Fine. Come closer, nerd.” They giggled, looking down at the cabin floor. Kris needed to make this quick before the ride ended.

Berdly eagerly nodded, leaning in so far his beak was nearly touching Kris’ face. He didnt say anything further, just staring at Kris. He was close enough that he could see past their bangs, seeing those crimson eyes staring back at him, a slight blush on the humans face. They were striking and caught him by surprise, yet Berdly couldn’t look away. Or, more he didn't want to.

“..Thanks, for today. It was fun. You’re not so bad when you’re not trying to one-up me in everything. Or calling me your rival. Or player-two.” They mumbled, giving him a genuine smile before continuing. “..you’re..pretty cute, aswell.” Kris immediately looked away, unable to stare at Berdlys dumbass face any longer. They tried to tell themselves that this was all the SOUL, that they truly didn’t want this, but.. Dammit, they really had fallen for.. for fucking BERDLY.

Berdlys eyes were wide, and he immediately swiveled his head around to look for someone—anyone, for whatever reason. There’s no way they just admitted that.. And meant it. Was Kris insinuating what he thinks their insinuating?

“A-Ah.. Why, thank you, Kris! You, uhm—” Berdlys plumage fluffed up, as he tried to laugh this all off and act nonchalant. Unfortunately, he wasn’t very good at ACTing.

“..W-Wait, you think i’m cute?” Berdly was at a near loss for words, feeling sweaty and red all over. His rival didn’t seem to be joking about any of this, they looked just as flustered as he was.

“..You look.. quite breathtaking yourself, Kris.” He eventually squawked out, his words slightly shaking as he wiped sweaty palms on his pants. Kris looked up from their lap, the smile still plastered on their face.

“Thanks for accompanying me to the festival. I-I hope we can hangout like this more often, Kris. You’re nice to be around too, when you’re not being a nuisance.” Berdly muttered, about to smooth down his feathers once again, but Kris moved closer to him in the cabin.

They drew in a breath, “.. Could I—” The sudden circular motion came to a stop. The cabin door opened, and Berdly nearly jumped out of his skin. Kris didn't bother to move away from Berdly, savouring the proximity just for another moment.

“hey. rides done. there’s a line, you know. don’t be a cabin hog.” Sans the Skeleton poked his head in. Berdly immediately nodded, then quickly apologized and scrambled to get out. Meanwhile Kris took their time, the smile never left their face. They seemed pretty content with that interaction, even if it got cut short. Sigh. The things the SOUL makes them do..

Kris and Berdly waited for Noelle and Susie to finish their ride, awkwardly avoiding eye contact with one another and holding hands. It didnt take too long for the two to exit one of the cabins, Noelle looking absolutely overjoyed and Susie giving her a contented smile, rubbing the back of her neck.

“Fahaha! Susie! You can’t just say things like that!”

“What? I’m just being honest. Heh- it’d be pretty cool though, right?” Susie poked at Noelle, then stood near the booth a moment longer to make small talk with the skeleton man. Likely insulting him, because he sucks.

Noelle giggled into her hand, before finally prying her eyes off of the reptilian to look at Berdly. “Hey! How was the wheel? Did you guys watch the sunset too?”

Kris silently nodded, giving her a thumbs up. Berdly nodded aswell, but surprisingly didn't say anything either.

“Fahah, i’m glad you two had fun! Oh, Angel.. It was amazing! I wish it went on longer. Susie was shaking the cabin and stuff, it was super scary but, it.. Was really nice, too.” She gave a happy sigh, before looking around briefly, her smile fading. “Its.. gotten super late, though. I've got to be getting home pretty soon.” She looked back at Susie. “Berdly, Kris, I’ll catch up with you two later, okay? I’m gonna walk Susie home!” Noelle gave Berdly and Kris a quick hug goodbye, before walking back over to Susie.

“Ah! S-Speaking of going home, I’d best be on my way, too! My mother probably wants me home before she arrives!-” Berdly sputtered, suddenly just now noticing the dark sky.

“Hey. It’ll be fine, Nerdly. I’ll walk you home.” Kris offered, noticing Berdlys nerves.

“Hmph. How kind of you. You sure this won’t be another race again?” Berdly asked, taking a moment to wipe his glasses off on his sweater sleeve.

“Promise.” They gave a soft nod, leading the way to Berdlys house, purposefully walking slow to have more time together.

Comfortable silence filled the air, the only sound being Berdlys talons scraping against the sidewalk and Kris’ shoes dragging against the ground, shoelaces untied. Why couldn't they just take a moment to tie them!?

“Kris? Care to continue what you were saying while at the ferris wheel? You got interrupted Sans.. What were you gonna say?” Berdly asked boldly, looking around, then back to Kris.

“Nothin’. Forget about it.” Kris shrugged. Berdly scoffed, and shook his head.

“You always say that! Come on, say it. We’re alone right now, arent we? Humour me, again.” Berdly nudged, squeezing Kris’ hand a bit tighter. They were pretty much infront of Berdlys house now.

“Fine.” Kris stopped in their tracks, before turning to Berdly. “I was gonna ask if.. I could.. kiss you, Berdly.” The human said, mumbing into their sweater, avoiding eye contact with Berdly.

“W-Wha-HUH!? You- Kris!? A-Are you joking? You were gonna ask that!?” Berdly was baffled. He convinced himself that this was just one of Kris’ jokes again! It was all for jokes, right? He knew that he and Kris had gotten closer over the last few weeks, more Super Smashing Fighters game nights, more visits when his mom wasn't there, longer Deskcord calls each week, but, he never would've thought they would like him like that. Berdly knew he was quite the catch, but even for Kris’ high standards! If he was being honest, it felt like a dream come true. His heart hammered in his ribs like it was trying to break his chest open.

Kris immediately turned away, wanting to crawl in a hole and just die already. What had possessed them to do this? What gave them the confidence they didnt have?!

“Berdly. I’m not joking.. The offer still stands. I, just,” They looked around awkwardly, Berdly staring at them in disbelief.

“No- Kris! Y-You don’t get it! Yes!! I do! I-I think i’ve been.. Waiting for this! I’ve been waiting to hear these words for awhile. I-I’ve just been denying it.” Berdly paused, nervously rubbing his beak with his wing.

“But, Kris.. You’d really be my for real player-two? No jokes? You would be the breeze under my beautiful wing?” Berdly moved an inch closer, his eyes wide and hopeful.

Kris immediately cringed, but nodded. He’s an idiot. But they were too. Kris pulled Berdly into a tight hug, holding him so close they could practically feel Berdlys heartbeat pound against their chest. Berdly wrapped his arms around Kris, holding them way gentler then they were hugging him. Kris pulled away for a moment to move their lips closer to Berdlys beak, but the sound of a squeaky door opening cut through the silence of the moment.

“Berdly? BERDLY! Get inside, now! It’s far past your curfew—and what’re you doing with Kris?!” His mother, a familiar bluebird with curly feathers appeared at Berdlys front door. Berdly and Kris immediately pulled away from eachother quicker than they could blink, staring right at Berdlys mom with sheepish faces. Should've known better doing that in public.

“U-Um! Nothing! Nothing at all, mother! Coming!” He shot Kris an apologetic look, before quickly jogging up to his house. Berdly waved Kris goodbye before his mom made him shut the door, leaving Kris standing there, alone and confused. They knew they should go home to their mother, but curiosity had gotten the best of Kris. They’d just watch what was going down through a window.

Berdly awkwardly stood in the kitchen with his mother, her giving him a disapproving look before turing around. “Berdly.. Mind telling me what you were doing out so late? And with.. that human, of all individuals in hometown? Weren’t you gonna go with Noelle?” She asked, taking some leftovers out of the fridge to warm up in the microwave for Berdly.

“A-As I said, it was nothing! I had just lost of track of time and didn’t have my watch on me! And for Kris and I.. T’was just a goodbye hug, mother. Noelle wanted to go with Susie to the festival, so.. by process of elimination, they were the only one I could take.” He explained nervously, his eyes darting around the room.

Berdlys mother sighed, before placing the warmed up leftovers on the kitchen table for Berdly to eat. “Okay, but.. You know I don’t want you hanging out with that human. They’re.. A bad influence, Berdly. You know that. Their bad grades, how they act, they sleep through class..” She frowned, beckoning Berdly over to her. “Your grades have already been slipping enough.. I sure hope it isn’t caused by all the time you spend with that Dreemurr. What happened to Noelle always coming over?” Berdlys mom asked, sounding strict yet slightly worried.

“Noelle has other stuff to do! We’re still study buddies. And, Kris isn’t a bad influence. They’re.. actually quite smart. When they feel like trying.” He huffed, sitting down at the table with his mother. Maybe his grades were slightly slipping, but if he had a small study sesh with Noelle, he’d get back up. Kris just made it so easy to.. forget about everything and just have fun for a moment. They somehow even got him to forget about doing homework a few times, which is a rarity for him.

“And, they’re fun to hangout with! Mom, they truly aren’t as bad as they seem. When they’re really determined to do something, they can do anything!” He took a small bite of his food.

“Still, Berdly..” She sighed, running a hand through her feathers. She knows something is going on between Kris and Berdly. It’s not something she’d necessarily approve of, but.. She hasn't seen Berdly this happy in awhile. Even if it was with Kris.. She was glad that her son was making memories with friends and spending time with people outside the house.

“..Just, keep your grades up. For me. For your future. You can hangout with Kris, if it makes you that truly happy. Maintain atleast a 3 foot distance with them, though. I don’t want you being as close as you were outside.. Alright? No shenanigans.” She stood up, giving her son a tired smile, and ruffled his feathers. “I’m off too bed. Goodnight, Berdly.”

Berdly was estatic. He felt like a little bluebird again, getting his first all A’s report card. His mom approved of Kris! It was a major step in the right direction. “Thank you, mom! I-I’ll do that. I’ll get my grades up, don’t fret!” That’d be easy. Berdly put his dish in the sink, and turned to walk up the stairs to his bedroom.

Berdly flopped onto his nest, feeling hinself sink into the soft blankets and pillows. His mind still lingered on Kris’ offer.. Tommorow was the weekend. He’d probably see them again this week. He didn't bother to change out of his day clothes. just tiredly closing his eyes and curling up against the pillows.

Then, a soft knock on his window. Then another. He shot up, eyes narrowing. What could anyone possibly want at this hour?! And why would they knock on his window?

He stood up, hesitantly approaching his window, before quickly pushing his curtain out of the way to see who was outside. Much to his surprise, it was Kris, perched up on a tree. Knocking on his window with a blank face.

“Wh—Kris” Berdly hissed quietly, opening his window to give them a unimpressed look. “What’re you doing here?! It’s late! Shouldnt you be home? Ms. Dreemur is surely worried about your absence!” He stepped back to give them room to enter.

Kris shook their head, the shrugged. “Skeleton dudes probably over again.. don’t wanna be there. Would rather hang with you.” They smirked, looking around Berdlys room as they took of their sneakers. They’ve seen it a few times, but everytime they enter they notice more. All Berdlys report cards pinned up on blue walls, which majorly were A’s or A+’s. A shelf of video-game character figurines and a large selection of games to choose from on his dresser. Kris would've said they were impressed, but they didn’t wanna inflate Berdlys ego more than they had already.

“Why are you—” Berdly stopped himself mid sentence, crossing his arms. “Whatever! Just.. stay quiet. My mom doesn’t know your here.” He sat down on his nest, pushing his crest feathers back. He was annoyed, but he had to admit it was nice seeing them like this. They went through all that effort to climb that tree to get to him.

Kris snickered and sat down next to him, feeling their weight sink into his nest. Berdly stiffened up and looked a little annoyed, but seemed to have calmed down after a moment of thought.

“Whats wrong? Can't share your bed?” They whispered teasingly, poking him.

“Wh—it's not just a bed, my dear Kris! This is my nest! Where I sleep! You’re lucky i'm letting you even sit on it with me!” He crossed his arms again, giving Kris a territorial look.

“We aren’t on.. nest sharing bases yet? Even with what happened earlier?” Kris turned a little red while they mumbled that, meanwhile Berdly went still again. Right, he hadnt had the time to really digest what was said then since his mom interrupted them.

“Tch.. Are you trying to guilt trip me? I, suppose that we can share, then..” Berdly adjusted his shirt collar. “If you truly are serious about being my lovely player-two.” He continued, still feeling a little off about having Kris in his nest, but, it also made him feel warm and happy. He trusted Kris enough to not mess it all up.

“‘Course I am.. Now I get to beat my boyfriends ass in games more often.” Kris lightly rested their weight on Berdlys side, feeling his warmth.

“I can’t believe it! I’ve got my very own gamer-they!” Berdly snickered to himself, before Kris laid back on his nest, pulling Berdly down with them. "What’re you doing now, Kris?”

“..Can I bum here for the night?” They asked Berdly quietly, turning over to face Berdly, who gave them a hestitant look, before nodding.

He knew he should respect the boundaries his mother wanted from him, but could he really resist Kris? “..Yeah. Just for tonight! My mom has work early in the morning and she usually checks up on me before she goes. You best be out by sunrise..”

Kris nodded, already closing their eyes and moving closer to Berdly in the nest. “Mhm.” The minute he said those words, it felt like they were already drifting off to sleep. Just before they fell asleep. they pulled Berdlys head slightly closer to theirs, and lightly kissed his cheek. Maybe kissing was too soon. Kris pieced together that Berdly probably would like to take things slower and not move so quick.

Berdly froze when he felt Kris kiss his cheek, feeling them stay there for atleast a moment or two before pulling away and drifting off to bed. Berdly wasn't gonna go to sleep for awhile now. Not after that. His mind was racing a mile a minute, in disbelief that Kris did that. Since when did they get so bold?! He’d have to step up his game with Kris fast. He’d need to impress Kris with something.

Berdly let out a breath he didn’t know he was holding. He merely closed his eyes and tried to steady his thoughts. Who cares right now? He’d just try and savour this moment for as long as he could. Berdly secretly prayed to the angel for more days like these, just relaxing and existing beside Kris. His Kris.
