Chapter Text
Logan was making his way up the tracks when he glanced over towards the oasis and felt his heart stop. Owen was sitting on a blanket with Lucy, laughing and smiling. He shouldn’t be jealous...he knew that; knew he’d missed his chance last year, but knowing didn’t help anything. He watched Lucy bolt up excitedly, then almost tackle Owen in a hug, her laugh drifting over the water, mocking him.
“I’m goin’ to Lucy’s!” Andy called from the tunnel as Logan passed him. He wanted to call him back, wanted to tell him no…but it was Friday, and Andy always went to Lucy’s on Friday nights. He half expected the boy to come home dejected after a couple of hours, but when night fell and he was still gone Logan let out a relieved sigh.
It could be worse… he thought as he straightened the house and started on the washing. Owen’s a good guy. Kind… Respectable. Still. He’d have to pull him aside soon. He knew Lucy’d already told him about their arrangement with Andy. Knew she’d told him about their little…well, not family exactly, but…more than once Andy’d slipped up and called her ‘Ma,’ and he was sure he’d called him ‘Pa’ at least a time or two…But… Owen needed to understand how things were. The last thing Logan needed was the guilt of someone else’s failed relationship hanging over him.
“Morning!” Lucy called brightly from the kitchen table. Need to get better about knocking… Logan told himself, as he made his way in. He tried to imagine walking in on Lucy, Owen and Andy having breakfast on Saturdays and just…couldn’t make himself comfortable with the idea. Maybe I can just start coming later when… he cut the thought off. He did not want to imagine someone else in her house…in her bed.
“Mornin’,” He said, clearing his throat and taking his seat at the table. “What’d you get up to yesterday?” He asked Andy, trying to sound normal.
“It was so cool!” Andy started, running down the long list of things he’d ‘helped’ Lucy make. Bars, boards, sticks, cloth, paint…Logan was only half listening, watching Lucy sip her coffee and gently correct Andy when his exaggerations got a little too out of hand.
“Owen’s got a special show tonight.” She said with a knowing smile. “Oh, it’s going to be so good.” Logan realized he’d missed half the conversation, so he just nodded, ignoring the pain in his chest.
“You wanna take Andy?” He asked, trying not to grind his teeth at the thought. He’d usually ask her that...wouldn’t he?
“You’re coming too.” She said with a nod. “I’m gonna need you in case I get weepy.”
Logan almost threw his fork down and stormed out. How dare she ask that of him? How dare she make him sit there and watch- She’s yer friend, he scolded himself after the initial flash of anger. Of course she wants you there. “Oh, uh…sure.” He grumbled, not knowing what else to say. It was his fault he was in this situation, after all.
