Work Text:
When he feels the mattress lift and hears the blanket move he doesn't sigh. He doesn't even bother closing his eyes beforehand because he knows it will happen; he leaves them just a little open to watch him go; pretends the conversation will go any different.
It comes out a little muffled when he speaks, "You're leaving?"
"Yes. I have work tomorrow. You know that."
He watches his bare back; how he pulls a shirt over it. Even when he's looking he doesn't open his eyes fully. He could recreate this in his mind even if he was blind.
"Mhhhm... Case or paperwork?"
"Paperwork, but I do need to prepare for a court proceeding on Wednesday."
"Do you need me to bring you anything?"
"No, thank you. I already have everything I need from you."
Edgeworth pulled his pants on. His jacket is neatly hung on a chair where Gumshoe put it after taking it off of him. Gumshoe's jacket is probably somewhere on the floor; he doesn't remember. Pants, jacket, then it's just the shoes, and he'll be gone. His car is parked somewhere in front of the apartment complex and Gumshoe wonders if Edgeworth is ever ashamed to be seen driving away from such a run-down area of the city. The weight from the mattress disappears completely. He's picking up the jacket now.
"Maybe you could stay?"
It's very quiet all of the sudden, and Gumshoe grabbed his pillow tighter. Maybe this time.
"I'm already dressed," Edgeworth says and it's like he didn't even try to sound confident; they both know he's full of shit.
"Getting undressed is faster than driving all the way back to your house, sir."
He waits for a response; all he gets is the noise of Edgeworth putting on his jacket.
"Have a good night, detective."
Like clockwork.
He hears socked feet gently thud against linoleum. Edgeworth is tying his shoes now. They click against the floors briefly before the door opens and shuts. He didn't turn off the light. Gumshoe will have to get it in a bit; the electricity bill is already too much for him to handle.
Why do I even ask?
