Work Text:
The spring evening air carried the scent of cherry blossoms through Tsukishima's neighborhood as cars began pulling up to his family's house. It was a modest two-story home in a quiet residential area, but tonight it would host something special: a graduation party for Karasuno's volleyball team, bringing together both current third-years and the alumni who had paved the way before them.
Hinata Shouyou arrived with his usual boundless energy, practically bouncing up the walkway despite the weight of his overnight bag. At nineteen, he'd grown a few more centimeters, though he'd never quite reached the height he'd dreamed of in his first year. What he lacked in stature, he more than made up for in presence. His orange hair caught the golden hour sunlight, and his brown eyes sparkled with excitement.
"Tsukishima!" he called out, waving enthusiastically as the tall blonde opened the door. "Thanks for hosting!"
Tsukishima Kei stood in the doorway, his expression as unimpressed as ever, though there was a softness around his eyes that hadn't been there three years ago. "Try not to break anything, Hinata. My parents are trusting me with the house for the weekend."
"I'll be careful!" Hinata promised, slipping off his shoes in the genkan. "Is anyone else here yet?"
"Yamaguchi's helping me set up in the kitchen. You're early."
"I'm excited! It's been months since we've all been together."
Tsukishima stepped aside to let him in, and Hinata made his way through the familiar layout. He'd been here a handful of times over the years for study sessions and team gatherings. The living room had been cleared of its usual coffee table, with cushions arranged in a large circle. The dining area connected to an open kitchen where Yamaguchi Tadashi was arranging bottles of alcohol on the counter.
"Hinata!" Yamaguchi greeted him with a warm smile. "You're the first one here besides us."
"I couldn't wait," Hinata admitted, setting his bag by the wall. His heart was racing, but not just from excitement about the party. Kageyama would be here soon. They'd have to be careful tonight, like they'd been careful for the past nine months, but the thought of being in the same room with him, celebrating together even if no one knew they were together, made his chest feel tight with anticipation.
The doorbell rang again, and Tsukishima went to answer it. This time it was Ennoshita Chikara, now a college sophomore, carrying a case of beer.
"Ennoshita-san!" Hinata rushed over to help him with the heavy case.
"Just Ennoshita is fine now," the former captain said with a laugh. "We're all adults here. Well, most of us are drinking age, anyway."
"We won't tell if you won't," Tsukishima said dryly.
Over the next thirty minutes, the house filled with familiar faces. Tanaka Ryuunosuke arrived with his signature loud energy, immediately pulling Hinata into a headlock and ruffling his hair. "Look at you! Still short!"
"I grew three centimeters!" Hinata protested, squirming free.
"Three whole centimeters," Tanaka teased. "Watch out, you might hit five feet soon."
Nishinoya Yuu came bounding in right after, and the two former troublemakers immediately started reminiscing about their greatest plays. Asahi Azumane followed, looking slightly less anxious than he had in high school, his beard neatly trimmed. Sugawara Koushi arrived with Daichi Sawamura, the two former third-years who had graduated when Hinata was a first-year. They'd become legends in Hinata's mind, and seeing them now, successful in their college careers, filled him with admiration.
Kiyoko Shimizu was the last of the alumni to arrive, and her presence immediately elevated the atmosphere. She'd always had that effect. Even Tanaka and Nishinoya, who had graduated past their desperate worship phase, straightened up a bit when she walked in.
"Thank you for inviting me," she said to Tsukishima, her voice as calm and measured as ever.
"Of course. You're part of the team."
The doorbell rang one more time, and Hinata's heart jumped into his throat. He knew that timing. He knew that presence even before the door opened.
Kageyama Tobio stepped inside, and Hinata had to force himself not to stare. Kageyama had filled out over the past three years, his shoulders broader, his frame more solid. His dark hair was slightly messy from the wind, and his blue eyes scanned the room with that intense focus that had never quite softened. When his gaze landed on Hinata, something flickered there, something warm and private that no one else would notice.
"You're late, Kageyama," Hinata said, keeping his tone light and teasing, the way he always did in public.
"I'm exactly on time," Kageyama replied, his voice that familiar low rumble. "You're just early."
"Some things never change," Sugawara said with a laugh. "You two are still bickering."
If only they knew, Hinata thought. If only they knew that last night, Kageyama had been in his bed, their legs tangled together, whispering things in the dark that made Hinata's face burn even now. If only they knew that this morning, they'd shared breakfast in Hinata's tiny apartment, stealing kisses between bites of toast.
But no one knew. No one could know. Not yet. They'd agreed to wait until after graduation, until they were both settled in their futures. The timing had never felt right to tell their friends, their former teammates, that somewhere between their constant rivalry and their perfect synchronization on the court, they'd fallen in love.
"Alright, everyone's here!" Tsukishima announced, closing the door. "Let's get this party started."
The group migrated to the living room, settling into the cushions arranged in a large circle. Yamaguchi brought out the bottles: vodka, rum, whiskey, and several types of mixers. There were also beers in a cooler and sake warming on the counter.
"I can't believe we're actually doing this," Asahi said, looking slightly nervous. "Drinking together like this."
"We're adults now," Daichi reminded him. "Well, most of us."
"The third-years are nineteen," Sugawara pointed out. "Close enough. Besides, this is a celebration. We're not going to be strict about a few months."
Hinata grabbed a beer from the cooler, popping it open. Across the circle, Kageyama did the same. Their eyes met briefly, and Hinata felt that familiar electric current run through him. Nine months, and it still felt like the first time every time Kageyama looked at him like that.
"To Karasuno!" Tanaka shouted, raising his beer.
"To Karasuno!" everyone echoed, and the party truly began.
The first hour passed in a blur of laughter and nostalgia. They traded stories about their favorite matches, their most embarrassing moments, the times they'd pushed each other to their limits. Hinata found himself relaxing into the familiar rhythm of the group, the easy camaraderie that had defined his high school years.
But he was always aware of Kageyama. Always conscious of where he was in the room, who he was talking to, the sound of his rare laugh when Tanaka told a particularly ridiculous story about their training camp mishaps.
"Okay, okay," Nishinoya said, clapping his hands together. "Enough reminiscing. Let's play some games!"
"What did you have in mind?" Ennoshita asked.
"Never Have I Ever!" Nishinoya announced. "Classic drinking game. Everyone holds up ten fingers. Someone says something they've never done, and if you have done it, you put a finger down and take a drink."
"Sounds dangerous," Kiyoko observed, but there was amusement in her eyes.
"That's the point!" Tanaka agreed enthusiastically.
They rearranged themselves, making sure everyone had a fresh drink. Hinata had switched to a mixed drink, vodka and orange juice that went down easier than the beer. Kageyama had done the same, though his drink looked stronger, less mixer and more alcohol.
"I'll start," Sugawara volunteered. "Never have I ever... failed a test in high school."
Immediately, several fingers went down. Hinata, Kageyama, Tanaka, and Nishinoya all drank.
"Of course," Tsukishima muttered.
"Hey, we passed eventually!" Hinata protested.
"After how many retakes?" Tsukishima shot back.
"Never have I ever," Daichi said, "gotten injured during a match."
More fingers dropped. Hinata drank, remembering his fever during the match against Shiratorizawa, the way Kageyama had looked at him with such concern. That had been the beginning, he thought. The moment when their rivalry had started shifting into something else.
The game continued, the questions getting progressively more personal and ridiculous. Never have I ever had a crush on a teammate. Hinata's finger dropped before he could stop himself, and he took a long drink to hide his reaction. Across the circle, Kageyama's finger had also dropped. Their eyes met for a fraction of a second before they both looked away.
"Ooh, interesting," Sugawara said, noticing. "Who wants to share?"
"It was a long time ago," Hinata said quickly. "First year stuff."
"Same," Kageyama added, his voice carefully neutral.
The moment passed, but Hinata's heart was racing. That had been close. Too close.
"Never have I ever," Kiyoko said, her voice cutting through the chatter, "kissed someone in secret."
Hinata's hand trembled as he lowered a finger and drank. So did Kageyama. So did several others, actually, which provided cover. But Hinata could feel the weight of the secret pressing down on him. Nine months of stolen kisses, hidden touches, nights spent in each other's arms. Nine months of being so careful, so cautious.
"Let's switch games," Yamaguchi suggested. "How about King's Cup?"
They rearranged again, placing a cup in the center of the circle and spreading a deck of cards around it. The rules were explained for those who hadn't played before: each card had a different rule, and you had to follow it or drink.
The game was chaotic and fun. Hinata ended up having to speak in an accent for three rounds, which made everyone laugh. Kageyama drew a card that made him the "question master," meaning anyone who answered his questions had to drink. He used it sparingly, but when he asked Hinata, "Are you having fun?" the look in his eyes made Hinata's breath catch.
"Yeah," Hinata answered without thinking, then cursed as he realized he'd fallen for it. He took another drink.
The alcohol was starting to hit him now, a pleasant warmth spreading through his body. The room felt softer around the edges, the laughter louder and more infectious. He was happy, genuinely happy, surrounded by the people who had shaped him into who he was today.
But more than anything, he was aware of Kageyama. The way his cheeks were starting to flush from the alcohol. The way his usually rigid posture was relaxing. The way he kept glancing at Hinata when he thought no one was looking.
"Shots!" Tanaka declared suddenly. "We need to do shots!"
"Oh no," Asahi groaned, but he was smiling.
Yamaguchi brought out shot glasses and a bottle of tequila. They passed them around, each person taking one.
"To the best team in the world!" Nishinoya shouted.
"To Karasuno!" they all echoed, and downed their shots.
The tequila burned going down, and Hinata coughed, his eyes watering. Beside him, Tsukishima looked equally pained, which was somehow satisfying.
"Another round!" Tanaka insisted.
"You're trying to kill us," Ennoshita accused, but he held out his glass anyway.
They did another round. Then another. Hinata lost count after the fourth shot. The room was spinning pleasantly now, everything bright and warm and perfect. He was laughing at something Nishinoya was saying, some story about his travels, when he felt it.
A hand, just barely brushing against his leg. So subtle that anyone else would think it was an accident. But Hinata knew better. He knew Kageyama's touch, knew the intention behind it.
He glanced over, and Kageyama was looking at him with an intensity that made Hinata's stomach flip. His blue eyes were darker than usual, pupils dilated from the alcohol and something else. Something hungry.
Hinata shifted slightly, pressing his leg more firmly against Kageyama's. The contact was hidden by the circle of people, by the cushions and the dim lighting. But it was there, electric and dangerous.
"I need another drink," Hinata announced, standing up perhaps a bit too quickly. The room swayed, and he had to catch himself on the wall.
"Careful," Sugawara said. "Maybe slow down a bit?"
"I'm fine!" Hinata insisted, making his way to the kitchen. He could feel Kageyama's eyes on him the whole way.
He was pouring himself another vodka and orange juice, heavy on the vodka this time, when he sensed someone behind him. He didn't need to turn around to know who it was.
"You're drinking a lot," Kageyama said quietly.
"So are you," Hinata replied, still not turning around.
"Hinata." The way Kageyama said his name, low and rough, made Hinata's hands shake. He set down the bottle before he could spill it.
"We can't," Hinata whispered. "Not here. Not now."
"I know." But Kageyama didn't move away. Hinata could feel the heat of him, so close but not touching. "I just... I wanted..."
"I know," Hinata said, finally turning around. They were alone in the kitchen, the sounds of the party muffled from the living room. Kageyama was looking at him with such raw need that it took Hinata's breath away. "Me too."
For a moment, they just stood there, the air between them crackling with tension. Hinata wanted to close the distance, wanted to kiss him, wanted to drag him upstairs and forget about the party entirely. But they couldn't. They'd been so careful for so long.
"Later," Hinata promised, his voice barely audible. "When everyone's asleep. We'll figure something out."
Kageyama nodded, but his jaw was tight with frustration. "This is torture."
"I know." Hinata grabbed his drink and brushed past Kageyama, letting their shoulders touch for just a second longer than necessary. "Come on. They'll notice if we're both gone too long."
They returned to the living room separately, Hinata first and Kageyama a minute later. If anyone noticed, they didn't comment. The party had reached that perfect level of drunk where everyone was loose and happy, inhibitions lowered but not gone entirely.
"Truth or Dare!" Nishinoya announced. "We're playing Truth or Dare!"
"Are we twelve?" Tsukishima asked, but he didn't object.
The game started innocently enough. Tanaka was dared to do fifty push-ups, which he accomplished with ease despite the alcohol. Kiyoko was asked to truth about her most embarrassing moment, which she declined to answer and took a drink instead. Asahi was dared to arm wrestle Daichi, which ended in a predictable victory for the former captain.
Then it was Hinata's turn. "Truth or dare, Hinata?" Sugawara asked.
"Dare," Hinata said without hesitation. He'd never been one to back down from a challenge.
Sugawara grinned. "I dare you to... let someone give you a hickey."
The room erupted in laughter and wolf whistles. Hinata felt his face burning. "What? That's... that's..."
"You chose dare," Sugawara said innocently. "Unless you want to drink instead?"
Hinata looked around the circle. Most people were laughing, thinking it was hilarious. But when his eyes landed on Kageyama, he saw something dark and possessive flash across his face. Kageyama's hands were clenched into fists, his jaw tight.
"Fine," Hinata said, trying to sound casual. "Who's volunteering?"
"I'll do it," Kiyoko said calmly, and the room went silent.
"Really?" Hinata squeaked.
"It's just a dare," she said, moving closer to him. "Unless you're uncomfortable?"
"No, I... okay." Hinata tilted his head, exposing his neck. He could feel Kageyama's eyes burning into him, could sense the tension radiating from across the circle.
Kiyoko leaned in, her lips pressing against his neck. It was clinical, efficient, nothing romantic about it. But it still made Hinata's skin crawl, not because of her but because he could feel Kageyama's jealousy like a physical force.
When she pulled back, there was indeed a small red mark on his neck. The room cheered and laughed, and Kiyoko returned to her spot with a small smile.
"Your turn, Hinata," she said.
Hinata's mind was spinning. He looked at Kageyama, saw the storm in his eyes, and made a reckless decision. "Kageyama. Truth or dare?"
"Dare," Kageyama said immediately, his voice hard.
"I dare you to..." Hinata paused, his heart racing. He knew he should choose something innocent, something safe. But the alcohol was making him bold, and the possessive look in Kageyama's eyes was making him reckless. "I dare you to kiss the person in this room you find most attractive."
The room went silent for a beat, then erupted in excited chatter.
"Oh, this is good," Tanaka said.
"Who's it going to be?" Nishinoya wondered aloud.
Kageyama stood up, and Hinata's heart stopped. What had he done? This was too much, too risky. Kageyama was going to have to kiss someone else, or he was going to have to kiss Hinata in front of everyone, and either option was going to destroy him.
But Kageyama didn't move toward anyone. Instead, he grabbed his drink and downed it in one long swallow. "I'll drink instead."
"Boo!" Tanaka called out. "That's no fun!"
"Those are the rules," Kageyama said, sitting back down. But his eyes never left Hinata's, and the message was clear: I'm not kissing anyone but you.
The game continued, but Hinata barely paid attention. His skin felt too tight, his body too warm. Every time Kageyama looked at him, it was like being touched. Every accidental brush of their hands when passing drinks felt intentional. The tension between them was building to something dangerous, something that couldn't be contained much longer.
By midnight, the party had reached its peak. Empty bottles littered the kitchen counter, and the living room was a mess of cushions and discarded cups. Everyone was thoroughly drunk, their voices louder, their laughter more uninhibited.
Hinata was beyond drunk. He'd lost count of how many drinks he'd had, how many shots he'd taken. The world was pleasantly blurry around the edges, and he felt invincible, fearless. Every time he looked at Kageyama, the desire that had been simmering all night threatened to boil over.
They'd been careful all evening, maintaining their usual dynamic of friendly rivalry and occasional cooperation. But the alcohol was eroding their carefully constructed walls. Hinata found himself sitting closer to Kageyama than he normally would. Their legs were pressed together, and neither of them moved away.
"Remember that match against Shiratorizawa?" Daichi was saying, his words slightly slurred. "That was the best game I've ever watched."
"Hinata's fever," Sugawara added. "I thought Coach was going to have a heart attack."
"I was fine," Hinata protested, though his words came out a bit jumbled. "I just needed to play."
"You were stubborn," Kageyama said, and his hand landed on Hinata's thigh under the cover of the cushions. It was hidden from view, but the touch sent electricity through Hinata's entire body.
"You liked it," Hinata shot back, his voice lower than usual. He put his hand over Kageyama's, pressing it more firmly against his leg.
Across the circle, no one seemed to notice. They were all caught up in their own conversations, their own memories. Tanaka and Nishinoya were arm wrestling. Tsukishima and Yamaguchi were having a quiet conversation in the corner. The alumni were reminiscing about their own matches.
"I need some air," Hinata announced, standing up abruptly. The room spun, and he had to grab onto the wall for support.
"You okay?" Asahi asked, concerned.
"Yeah, just... hot in here." Hinata made his way toward the back door that led to the small yard. He could feel Kageyama's eyes following him.
Outside, the cool night air hit him like a shock. He leaned against the wall, closing his eyes and trying to steady his breathing. This was getting dangerous. He wanted Kageyama so badly it hurt, wanted to touch him, kiss him, claim him in front of everyone.
The door opened behind him, and he knew without looking who it was.
"You followed me," Hinata said.
"You wanted me to," Kageyama replied, moving closer.
"We can't do this here." But even as Hinata said it, he was turning around, looking up at Kageyama with undisguised want.
"I know." Kageyama's hands were clenched at his sides, like he was physically restraining himself from reaching out. "But I can't... watching Kiyoko put her mouth on you..."
"It was just a dare," Hinata said, but he felt a thrill at the jealousy in Kageyama's voice.
"I don't care. You're mine." The possessiveness in those words made Hinata's knees weak.
"Then prove it," Hinata challenged, the alcohol making him bold.
For a moment, they just stared at each other, the tension so thick it was almost visible. Then Kageyama moved, closing the distance between them, and Hinata thought he was finally going to kiss him, consequences be damned.
But the back door opened again, and they sprang apart just as Yamaguchi stepped outside.
"Oh, sorry," Yamaguchi said, looking between them. "Am I interrupting something?"
"No," Kageyama said quickly. "Just getting some air."
"It was getting stuffy in there," Hinata added, hoping his face wasn't as flushed as it felt.
Yamaguchi looked at them for a moment longer, and Hinata wondered if he suspected something. But then he just smiled. "Well, come back inside soon. Nishinoya wants to do karaoke."
"Karaoke?" Hinata repeated.
"Tsukishima has a machine. It's going to be a disaster." Yamaguchi grinned and went back inside.
Hinata and Kageyama stood in silence for a moment. The moment had passed, the spell broken.
"We should go back," Kageyama said finally.
"Yeah." But neither of them moved.
"Hinata." Kageyama's voice was strained. "I don't know how much longer I can do this."
"I know." Hinata reached out, just for a second, and squeezed Kageyama's hand. "Me neither."
They went back inside, where chaos had indeed erupted. Nishinoya had commandeered the karaoke machine and was belting out an off-key rendition of some pop song. Tanaka was his backup dancer, and the whole scene was hilarious and endearing.
Hinata threw himself into the party, singing along, dancing badly, laughing until his sides hurt. But he was always aware of Kageyama, always conscious of the magnetic pull between them.
More drinks. More shots. More games. The night blurred together into a haze of alcohol and laughter and desperate, hidden glances.
At some point, Hinata found himself in the kitchen again, leaning against the counter because standing was becoming difficult. Kageyama appeared beside him, so close their shoulders touched.
"Everyone's pretty drunk," Kageyama observed.
"Yeah." Hinata looked around. In the living room, Asahi had fallen asleep on one of the cushions. Daichi and Sugawara were having an intense conversation about something, their words too slurred to make out. Tanaka and Nishinoya were still going strong, but even they were starting to slow down.
"There's a closet," Kageyama said quietly. "Down the hall. Storage for sports equipment."
Hinata's heart started racing. "Kageyama..."
"Just for a minute. I just need..." Kageyama's hand found Hinata's, hidden between their bodies. "Please."
Hinata knew it was a bad idea. Knew they were both too drunk, too reckless. Knew that someone could find them. But he was beyond caring. He needed Kageyama like he needed air.
"Okay," he whispered. "But we have to be quick."
They waited until no one was looking, then slipped down the hallway. The house was a maze of rooms, but Kageyama seemed to know where he was going. He opened a door near the end of the hall, revealing a small closet filled with sports equipment: volleyballs, a net, some training gear.
They stepped inside, and Kageyama closed the door behind them. The space was cramped, barely big enough for two people. In the darkness, Hinata could hear Kageyama's breathing, fast and uneven.
"Kageyama," Hinata started, but then Kageyama's mouth was on his, and all thoughts fled.
The kiss was desperate, hungry, nine months of pent-up desire and tonight's careful restraint finally breaking free. Kageyama's hands were in Hinata's hair, pulling him closer, and Hinata was pressing against him, trying to eliminate any space between their bodies.
"Fuck," Hinata gasped when they broke apart for air. "Fuck, I've wanted this all night."
"Me too," Kageyama growled, his voice rough with need. His hands moved to Hinata's waist, gripping hard enough to bruise. "Watching everyone look at you, touch you..."
"Jealous?" Hinata teased, but his voice was breathless.
"Yes." Kageyama's mouth moved to Hinata's neck, biting down on the spot where Kiyoko had left her mark. "You're mine. Only mine."
The possessiveness in his voice sent a shiver through Hinata's body. This was different from their usual dynamic. Normally, they were equals, pushing and pulling at each other. But drunk Kageyama was something else entirely, something darker and more demanding.
"Say it," Kageyama commanded, his teeth grazing Hinata's throat.
"I'm yours," Hinata breathed, tilting his head back to give Kageyama better access. "Only yours."
"Good." Kageyama's hands moved under Hinata's shirt, fingers digging into his skin. "Take this off."
Hinata obeyed without hesitation, pulling his shirt over his head and dropping it on the floor. The closet was dark, but his eyes had adjusted enough to see Kageyama's expression, the raw hunger there.
"You too," Hinata said, reaching for Kageyama's shirt.
But Kageyama caught his wrists, pinning them above Hinata's head with one hand. "I didn't say you could touch me yet."
Hinata's breath caught. This side of Kageyama, commanding and controlling, made his whole body feel like it was on fire. "Kageyama..."
"What did I tell you to call me?" Kageyama's free hand traced down Hinata's chest, his touch maddeningly light.
"Tobio," Hinata corrected, his voice shaking.
"That's better." Kageyama's mouth found his again, the kiss bruising in its intensity. His hand continued its exploration, mapping every inch of Hinata's torso like he was memorizing it.
Hinata squirmed against the hold on his wrists, desperate for more contact. "Please..."
"Please what?" Kageyama pulled back slightly, his blue eyes almost black in the dim light.
"Touch me. More. I need..." Hinata couldn't finish the sentence, couldn't articulate the desperate need coursing through him.
"You need what?" Kageyama's hand moved lower, fingers tracing the waistband of Hinata's jeans. "Use your words."
"I need you," Hinata gasped. "Need you to fuck me."
Kageyama made a sound low in his throat, something between a groan and a growl. "Here? Now?"
"Yes. Please, Tobio, I can't... I need..."
Kageyama released Hinata's wrists and immediately started working on his jeans, popping the button and dragging down the zipper. Hinata helped, shoving his jeans and boxers down his hips until they pooled around his ankles.
"Turn around," Kageyama ordered, and Hinata obeyed, bracing his hands against the wall. He heard the sound of Kageyama's belt, the rustle of fabric, and then Kageyama was pressed against his back, hot and hard.
"We don't have..." Hinata started, but Kageyama cut him off.
"I don't care. I want to feel you. All of you."
The recklessness of it should have scared Hinata, but instead it just made him want it more. "Yes. Okay. Yes."
Kageyama's hand wrapped around Hinata's hip, holding him steady. "You're so fucking perfect," he murmured, his lips against Hinata's shoulder. "So beautiful. Mine."
"Yours," Hinata agreed, pushing back against him.
But Kageyama didn't enter him yet. Instead, he dropped to his knees, and Hinata felt his hands spreading him open.
"What are you..." Hinata's question turned into a choked moan as he felt Kageyama's tongue, hot and wet, licking into him.
"Fuck!" Hinata's hands scrabbled against the wall, trying to find purchase. The sensation was overwhelming, Kageyama's tongue pushing inside him, opening him up. "Tobio, oh god..."
Kageyama didn't respond, too focused on his task. His hands gripped Hinata's ass, holding him open as his tongue worked deeper. The wet sounds were obscene in the quiet closet, mixing with Hinata's increasingly desperate moans.
"Please," Hinata begged, his legs shaking. "Please, I need... I need you inside me..."
Kageyama pulled back, and Hinata heard him spit. Then there were fingers, slick with saliva, pushing inside him. One, then two, stretching him open with quick, efficient movements.
"You're so tight," Kageyama said, his voice strained. "So perfect."
"More," Hinata demanded. "I can take it. Give me more."
A third finger joined the first two, and Hinata gasped at the stretch. It burned, but it was good, so good. Kageyama's fingers found that spot inside him that made him see stars, and he cried out, not caring if anyone heard.
"Quiet," Kageyama warned, but there was amusement in his voice. "Unless you want everyone to know what we're doing in here."
"Don't care," Hinata panted. "Just fuck me already."
Kageyama withdrew his fingers and stood up. Hinata felt the blunt pressure of him, hot and hard, pressing against his entrance.
"Last chance to stop," Kageyama said, but his voice was shaking with need.
"Don't you dare stop," Hinata growled. "I swear to god, Tobio, if you don't fuck me right now\..."
Kageyama pushed in, and Hinata's threat dissolved into a long, low moan. The stretch was intense, almost too much, but Kageyama went slow, giving him time to adjust.
"Breathe," Kageyama murmured, his hands gentle on Hinata's hips despite the tension in his body. "Just breathe."
Hinata tried, taking deep breaths as Kageyama sank deeper. When he was finally fully seated, they both stayed still for a moment, adjusting to the sensation.
"Okay?" Kageyama asked, his voice tight with restraint.
"Yeah. Move. Please move."
Kageyama pulled back and thrust in again, and Hinata had to bite his lip to keep from crying out. The angle was perfect, hitting that spot inside him with every thrust. Kageyama set a steady rhythm, not too fast but deep, so deep.
"You feel so good," Kageyama groaned, his fingers digging into Hinata's hips. "So fucking good. Better than I remembered."
"Harder," Hinata demanded. "I can take it. Fuck me harder."
Kageyama's control snapped. His thrusts became rougher, faster, the sound of skin slapping against skin echoing in the small space. Hinata braced himself against the wall, pushing back to meet each thrust.
"Mine," Kageyama growled, leaning over Hinata's back. "Say it again."
"Yours," Hinata gasped. "All yours. Only yours."
"That's right." Kageyama's hand wrapped around Hinata's cock, stroking in time with his thrusts. "No one else gets to touch you like this. No one else gets to see you like this."
"No one," Hinata agreed, his voice breaking. "Just you. Always you."
The pleasure was building, coiling tight in Hinata's belly. He was close, so close. Kageyama's hand on his cock, his body inside him, the possessive words in his ear, it was all too much.
"Tobio," he warned. "I'm going to..."
"Come for me," Kageyama commanded. "Let me feel you."
Hinata came with a strangled cry, his body clenching around Kageyama. The sensation pushed Kageyama over the edge, and he thrust in deep one last time, spilling inside Hinata with a low groan.
They stayed like that for a moment, both breathing hard, Kageyama's forehead resting against Hinata's shoulder. Slowly, carefully, Kageyama pulled out, and Hinata felt the wet slide of his release.
"Fuck," Hinata breathed, his legs shaking. "That was..."
"Yeah," Kageyama agreed, his voice rough.
They started to clean up as best they could in the dark closet, using their discarded shirts to wipe themselves down. Hinata was just pulling his jeans back up when he heard it.
Footsteps in the hallway. Coming closer.
"Shit," Kageyama hissed, frantically buttoning his pants.
The door opened, and light flooded the closet. Hinata blinked against the sudden brightness, his heart stopping as he saw who was standing there.
Tsukishima.
For a moment, no one moved. Tsukishima's eyes went wide, taking in the scene: Hinata and Kageyama, both shirtless and disheveled, the obvious evidence of what they'd been doing written all over their faces.
"I..." Tsukishima started, then stopped. His expression was unreadable. "I was looking for extra pillows."
"Tsukishima," Hinata began, but he didn't know what to say. How could he possibly explain this?
"How long?" Tsukishima asked, his voice carefully neutral.
"Nine months," Kageyama answered, his jaw tight.
Tsukishima was quiet for a long moment. Then he said, "Everyone's going to know by morning. Yamaguchi saw you two go down the hall together. He's been making jokes about it."
Panic flooded through Hinata. "Tsukishima, please, we weren't ready to tell anyone yet..."
"I'm not going to say anything," Tsukishima interrupted. "But you two need to figure out what you're doing. This..." he gestured at the closet, "isn't sustainable."
"We know," Kageyama said quietly.
Tsukishima looked at them for another moment, then sighed. "The pillows are in the upstairs closet. I suggest you two get yourselves together before you come back to the party. And maybe try to be a little less obvious."
He closed the door, leaving them in darkness again.
"Fuck," Hinata said, sliding down the wall to sit on the floor. "Fuck, fuck, fuck."
"He's not going to tell anyone," Kageyama said, but he didn't sound convinced.
"But Yamaguchi suspects. And if Yamaguchi suspects, then..." Hinata put his head in his hands. "We're so screwed."
"Maybe it's time," Kageyama said quietly. "Maybe we should just tell everyone."
"Now? Like this? Drunk and half-naked in a closet?" Hinata laughed, but there was no humor in it. "That's not how I wanted to do this."
"I know." Kageyama sat down beside him, their shoulders touching. "But maybe there's no perfect way. Maybe we just have to do it."
Hinata leaned his head on Kageyama's shoulder, suddenly exhausted. The alcohol was still in his system, making everything feel surreal. "I don't want to go back out there."
"Me neither."
They sat in silence for a moment, the weight of what had just happened settling over them.
"We could leave," Hinata said suddenly. "Just... leave. Get out of here before anyone else figures it out."
"And go where?"
"I don't know. A hotel? Anywhere but here."
Kageyama was quiet, considering. Then he said, "Okay. Let's go."
They put their shirts back on, trying to make themselves presentable. Hinata's hair was a mess, and he knew there were marks on his neck that would be impossible to hide. Kageyama looked equally disheveled, his lips swollen from kissing.
"We look like we just had sex," Hinata observed.
"We did just have sex," Kageyama pointed out.
"Right. Okay. We just need to grab our bags and get out without anyone noticing."
"That's going to be impossible."
"Do you have a better idea?"
Kageyama didn't answer, which was answer enough.
They opened the closet door carefully, peering out into the hallway. It was empty, but they could hear voices from the living room. The party was still going, though it sounded like it was winding down.
"On three," Hinata whispered. "One... two... three."
They bolted down the hallway, moving as quickly and quietly as possible. Hinata's bag was by the front door where he'd left it. Kageyama's was in the living room, which was going to be a problem.
"I'll get it," Kageyama said. "Wait here."
He slipped into the living room, and Hinata held his breath. He could hear Kageyama's voice, casual and normal, saying something about needing his phone charger. Then he was back, bag in hand.
"Let's go," Kageyama said, and they headed for the front door.
"Leaving already?" a voice called out, and Hinata's heart sank.
He turned to see Sugawara standing in the doorway to the living room, a knowing smile on his face.
"Yeah, we're... we're pretty tired," Hinata said, trying to sound normal.
"I bet you are," Sugawara said, and there was definitely amusement in his voice. "You two have fun tonight?"
"It was a great party," Kageyama said stiffly.
"Mm-hmm." Sugawara's eyes moved between them, taking in their disheveled appearance. "Well, get home safe. And Hinata? You might want to cover up that hickey. Or those hickeys, I should say."
Hinata's hand flew to his neck, and Sugawara laughed.
"Don't worry. Your secret's safe with me. For now." He winked and went back into the living room.
Hinata and Kageyama looked at each other, then practically ran out the front door.
The cool night air was a shock after the warmth of the house. Hinata took a deep breath, trying to clear his head. The alcohol was still affecting him, making the world tilt slightly, but the panic was sobering him up fast.
"We need to call a cab," Kageyama said, pulling out his phone.
"Where are we going?"
"There's a hotel near the station. We can stay there for the night, figure out what to do in the morning."
Hinata nodded, too overwhelmed to argue. While Kageyama called for a cab, he looked back at Tsukishima's house. Through the windows, he could see the shapes of their friends, still partying, still laughing. They had no idea that everything had just changed.
The cab arrived fifteen minutes later, and they climbed in silently. The driver gave them a look, probably noting their young age and obvious intoxication, but didn't comment. Hinata gave him the name of the hotel, and they pulled away from the curb.
In the back seat, Kageyama's hand found Hinata's, their fingers intertwining. It was a small gesture, but it grounded Hinata, reminded him why they were doing this.
"Are you okay?" Kageyama asked quietly.
"I don't know," Hinata admitted. "That wasn't how I wanted tonight to go."
"Me neither. But..." Kageyama squeezed his hand. "I'm not sorry. About what happened in the closet. About any of it."
"I'm not either," Hinata said, and realized it was true. Despite the panic, despite the fear of being discovered, he didn't regret it. He'd wanted Kageyama too badly, for too long. "I just wish we'd been more careful."
"We can't change it now. We just have to deal with it."
The hotel was a mid-range business hotel, the kind that catered to travelers and didn't ask too many questions. Kageyama paid for a room with his credit card, and the clerk handed over a key card without comment.
Their room was on the third floor, small but clean. There was a double bed, a small bathroom, and a window overlooking the street. Hinata dropped his bag by the door and collapsed onto the bed, suddenly exhausted.
"I can't believe this is happening," he said to the ceiling.
Kageyama sat down beside him, his weight making the mattress dip. "We knew we'd have to tell people eventually."
"Yeah, but not like this. Not because we got caught fucking in a closet at a party."
"It could be worse."
"How?"
Kageyama thought about it. "I don't know. But it could be."
Despite everything, Hinata laughed. "You're terrible at making me feel better."
"I know." Kageyama lay down beside him, their bodies close but not touching. "But I'm here. That counts for something, right?"
"Yeah." Hinata rolled onto his side, looking at Kageyama. In the dim light from the window, he looked softer somehow, younger. "It counts for everything."
They lay there in silence for a moment, just looking at each other. Then Kageyama leaned in and kissed him, soft and sweet, so different from the desperate passion in the closet.
"I love you," Kageyama said when they broke apart. "I know I don't say it enough, but I do. I love you."
"I love you too," Hinata replied, his chest tight with emotion. "Even when you're being an idiot."
"I'm not the one who dared me to kiss someone at the party."
"You're the one who followed me into a closet."
"You wanted me to."
"I did," Hinata admitted. "I really did."
Kageyama kissed him again, deeper this time. Hinata could taste the alcohol on his breath, could feel the heat of his body. The panic from earlier was fading, replaced by that familiar desire.
"We should probably sleep," Kageyama said, but he didn't pull away.
"Probably," Hinata agreed, but his hands were already moving to Kageyama's shirt, pulling it up.
"Hinata..."
"I want you again," Hinata said simply. "We're already here. We're already in trouble. Might as well make it worth it."
Kageyama groaned. "You're going to be the death of me."
"But what a way to go," Hinata teased, finally getting Kageyama's shirt off.
This time, they took their time. There was no rush, no fear of being discovered. They undressed each other slowly, mapping familiar territory with new appreciation. Hinata traced the lines of Kageyama's muscles, the scars from years of volleyball. Kageyama's hands were gentle on Hinata's skin, reverent.
"You're beautiful," Kageyama murmured, his lips against Hinata's collarbone.
"You're drunk," Hinata replied, but he was smiling.
"I'm drunk and you're beautiful. Both things can be true."
They fell onto the bed together, a tangle of limbs and heated kisses. Hinata felt like he was burning up from the inside, every nerve ending on fire. He wanted to crawl inside Kageyama's skin, wanted to be as close as physically possible.
"How do you want me?" Kageyama asked, his voice low and rough.
Hinata considered. In the closet, Kageyama had been in control, dominant and demanding. But now, in the privacy of the hotel room, Hinata wanted something different.
"On your back," he said, pushing Kageyama down onto the mattress. "I want to ride you."
Kageyama's eyes darkened with lust. "Fuck, yes. Okay."
Hinata straddled him, taking a moment to just look. Kageyama was gorgeous like this, spread out beneath him, his dark hair messy against the white pillow, his blue eyes heavy-lidded with desire. Hinata felt a surge of possessiveness, the same feeling Kageyama had expressed earlier.
"Mine," he said, leaning down to kiss Kageyama hard. "You're mine."
"Yours," Kageyama agreed, his hands coming up to grip Hinata's hips. "Always yours."
Hinata reached between them, wrapping his hand around Kageyama's cock. It was already hard, hot and heavy in his palm. He stroked slowly, watching Kageyama's face as he did.
"Hinata," Kageyama groaned, his hips bucking up into the touch. "Don't tease."
"Why not?" Hinata asked innocently, but he was already moving, positioning himself. "I like watching you fall apart."
He sank down slowly, taking Kageyama inside him inch by inch. The stretch was easier this time, his body still open from earlier, but it was still intense. When he was fully seated, they both paused, breathing hard.
"Okay?" Kageyama asked, his hands gentle on Hinata's thighs.
"Yeah. More than okay." Hinata started to move, rolling his hips in a slow, steady rhythm. "You feel so good inside me."
"You feel perfect," Kageyama replied, his eyes locked on Hinata's face. "So perfect."
Hinata picked up the pace, rising and falling on Kageyama's cock. The angle was different like this, hitting new spots that made him gasp. Kageyama's hands moved to his hips, helping guide his movements.
"Faster," Kageyama urged. "I want to see you lose control."
Hinata obliged, moving faster, harder. The bed creaked beneath them, and he didn't care. Let the whole hotel hear. Let everyone know that Kageyama was his.
"Touch yourself," Kageyama commanded, and Hinata obeyed, wrapping his hand around his own cock. The dual sensation was overwhelming, Kageyama inside him and his own hand stroking himself.
"Tobio," he gasped. "I'm close."
"Not yet," Kageyama said, and suddenly he was sitting up, changing the angle. His arms wrapped around Hinata, holding him close as he thrust up into him. "Not until I say."
"That's not fair," Hinata protested, but his voice was weak.
"Life's not fair." Kageyama's mouth found Hinata's neck, biting down hard enough to leave a mark. "You're going to wait for me."
It was torture, holding back when every nerve in his body was screaming for release. But there was something thrilling about it too, about giving Kageyama this control.
"Please," Hinata begged. "Please, Tobio, I need..."
"What do you need?" Kageyama's voice was rough, strained. He was close too, Hinata could tell.
"Need to come. Need you to make me come."
"Then come," Kageyama growled, his hand replacing Hinata's on his cock. "Come for me."
Hinata came with a cry, his body clenching around Kageyama. The sensation pushed Kageyama over the edge, and he thrust up hard, spilling inside Hinata for the second time that night.
They collapsed together onto the bed, both breathing hard. Hinata felt boneless, completely spent. Kageyama's arms were still around him, holding him close.
"I love you," Hinata murmured, his eyes already closing.
"I love you too," Kageyama replied, pressing a kiss to his temple.
But they weren't done yet. As they lay there, catching their breath, Hinata felt Kageyama's cock starting to harden again inside him.
"Seriously?" Hinata asked, but he was smiling.
"I can't help it," Kageyama said. "You feel too good."
"We're going to regret this in the morning."
"Probably. But I don't care right now."
Hinata rolled off of him, and Kageyama made a sound of protest at the loss. But then Hinata was on his hands and knees, looking back over his shoulder.
"Your turn to be in control," he said. "Show me what you've got."
Kageyama didn't need to be told twice. He moved behind Hinata, his hands gripping his hips. "You sure? You're probably sore."
"I don't care. I want you."
Kageyama pushed back inside, and Hinata moaned at the stretch. He was sore, but it was a good kind of pain, a reminder of everything they'd done.
This time, Kageyama wasn't gentle. He set a punishing pace, his hips snapping against Hinata's ass with each thrust. Hinata braced himself against the headboard, pushing back to meet each movement.
"You take me so well," Kageyama said, his voice strained. "Like you were made for this. Made for me."
"I was," Hinata gasped. "Only for you."
Kageyama leaned over him, his chest against Hinata's back. One hand wrapped around Hinata's throat, not squeezing but just holding, a possessive gesture that made Hinata's cock twitch with interest despite having just come.
"Mine," Kageyama growled in his ear. "Say it."
"Yours," Hinata choked out. "All yours."
"That's right." Kageyama's other hand moved to Hinata's cock, stroking in time with his thrusts. "And I'm yours. Only yours."
"Only mine," Hinata agreed, his voice breaking.
They moved together, finding a rhythm that was uniquely theirs. This was what they'd been building toward for three years, since that first practice match when they'd realized they could fly together. This connection, this perfect synchronization.
"I'm going to come again," Kageyama warned, his movements becoming erratic.
"Do it," Hinata urged. "Fill me up. Mark me. Make me yours."
Kageyama came with a shout, his body shuddering against Hinata's. The sensation pushed Hinata over the edge too, and he came for the second time, his release spilling over Kageyama's hand and onto the sheets.
They collapsed together, completely spent. Kageyama pulled out carefully, and Hinata felt the wet slide of his release. They were both a mess, covered in sweat and come and each other.
"We should shower," Kageyama said, but he didn't move.
"In a minute," Hinata replied, his eyes already closing. "Just... let me rest for a minute."
But a minute turned into longer, and soon they were both asleep, tangled together in the messy sheets.
Hinata woke to sunlight streaming through the window and the worst headache of his life. His mouth tasted like something had died in it, and his body ached in places he didn't know could ache.
"Oh god," he groaned, burying his face in the pillow.
Beside him, Kageyama made a similar sound of distress. "What time is it?"
Hinata fumbled for his phone on the nightstand. The screen was too bright, making him wince. "Ten thirty."
"Fuck." Kageyama sat up slowly, then immediately regretted it. "I'm never drinking again."
"Me neither." Hinata's phone was buzzing with notifications. Lots of notifications. "Oh no."
"What?"
"I have... thirty-seven messages. And fifteen missed calls."
Kageyama checked his own phone. "I have forty-two messages. And a video."
They looked at each other, dread settling in their stomachs.
"Should we look?" Hinata asked.
"I don't think we have a choice."
Hinata opened his messages first. Most were from the group chat with the team.
Tanaka: "Dude where did you guys go???"
Nishinoya: "Kageyama and Hinata left together 👀"
Yamaguchi: "I KNEW IT"
Tsukishima: "You're all idiots."
Sugawara: "Let them have their privacy."
Daichi: "What's going on?"
Ennoshita: "Check the video Noya posted."
Hinata's hands were shaking as he found the video. It was from Nishinoya's phone, taken at some point during the party. The camera was shaky, clearly filmed by someone very drunk, but the subjects were unmistakable.
It was Hinata and Kageyama, sitting close together in the living room. Hinata's hand was on Kageyama's thigh, hidden from most angles but visible to Nishinoya's camera. They were looking at each other with such obvious affection that Hinata couldn't believe no one had noticed before.
Then the video cut to later in the night. Hinata and Kageyama slipping down the hallway together. The camera followed them, though Nishinoya clearly didn't get close enough to see them go into the closet.
The final clip was of them leaving, disheveled and obviously trying to sneak out. Sugawara's voice could be heard in the background, saying something about hickeys.
"Oh my god," Hinata said, his face burning. "Oh my god, everyone knows."
"Let me see." Kageyama took the phone, watching the video with an increasingly grim expression. "Well. That's not subtle."
"What do we do?"
"I don't know." Kageyama handed back the phone. "Face it, I guess. We can't exactly deny it now."
Hinata scrolled through more messages. Some were teasing, some were supportive, some were just confused. But the overall tone was... not negative. No one seemed angry or disgusted. Mostly just surprised and amused.
Sugawara: "For the record, I'm happy for you two. You deserve each other."
Daichi: "Congratulations? I think? This is a surprise but a good one."
Asahi: "I always thought you two had something special."
Kiyoko: "I'm glad you're together. You balance each other well."
Even Tsukishima had sent a private message: "Next time you want to hook up at a party, maybe don't do it in my house. But I'm not mad. Just annoyed I have to clean that closet now."
"They're... okay with it," Hinata said, surprised. "Everyone's okay with it."
"Did you think they wouldn't be?" Kageyama asked.
"I don't know. I was worried. We've been hiding it for so long, I guess I thought there was a reason to hide."
"The only reason was us," Kageyama said quietly. "We were scared. But maybe we didn't need to be."
Hinata's phone buzzed again. This time it was a call from Sugawara. He answered hesitantly.
"Hello?"
"Hinata! You're alive!" Sugawara's voice was cheerful, with no hint of judgment. "How are you feeling?"
"Like death," Hinata admitted.
"Yeah, you two put away a lot of alcohol last night. Are you somewhere safe?"
"We're at a hotel. We're fine."
"Good. Listen, I just wanted to say... we're all happy for you. Both of you. I know it probably feels overwhelming right now, but no one's upset. We're just surprised it took you this long to tell us."
"You knew?" Hinata asked, shocked.
"I suspected. The way you two look at each other... it's pretty obvious once you know what to look for. But I figured you'd tell us when you were ready."
"We were going to," Hinata said. "After graduation. We just... we wanted to wait."
"I understand. But hey, now you don't have to hide anymore. That's got to be a relief, right?"
Hinata thought about it. Despite the hangover and the embarrassment, there was a lightness in his chest that hadn't been there before. "Yeah. Yeah, it is."
"Good. Now get some rest, drink lots of water, and we'll see you both soon. Oh, and Hinata? Tell Kageyama that Daichi wants to have a 'talk' with him about his intentions."
"His what?"
"His intentions. You know, the whole protective older brother thing. It's mostly a joke, but Daichi's taking his role as former captain very seriously."
Hinata laughed despite himself. "I'll tell him."
After he hung up, he relayed the conversation to Kageyama, who looked both amused and terrified at the prospect of Daichi's "talk."
"We should probably go back," Kageyama said. "Face everyone properly."
"Yeah." Hinata looked down at himself. He was still naked, covered in dried sweat and other fluids. "But maybe shower first."
"Definitely shower first."
They took turns in the small bathroom, washing away the evidence of the night before. Hinata stood under the hot water, letting it soothe his aching muscles. He had marks all over his body, hickeys and bite marks and fingerprint bruises. Evidence of Kageyama's possession, of their passion.
He should probably be embarrassed. Should probably regret the recklessness of last night. But looking at the marks, all he felt was a warm satisfaction. These were proof that Kageyama was his, that they belonged to each other.
When he came out of the bathroom, Kageyama was dressed and looking at his phone. "Tsukishima says we can come back to get our stuff. Most people have left, but he and Yamaguchi are still there cleaning up."
"Okay." Hinata got dressed, wincing at the soreness in his body. "Let's go face the music."
They checked out of the hotel and caught a cab back to Tsukishima's house. The ride was quiet, both of them lost in their own thoughts. Hinata's hand found Kageyama's, and they held on tight.
When they arrived, Tsukishima answered the door with a raised eyebrow. "The prodigal lovers return."
"Shut up," Hinata muttered, but there was no heat in it.
"Come in. Yamaguchi made coffee. You both look like you need it."
They followed him inside. The house was mostly clean, though there were still some empty bottles on the counter. Yamaguchi was in the kitchen, and he greeted them with a warm smile.
"Morning! Or, well, almost afternoon. How are you feeling?"
"Like we got hit by a truck," Kageyama said.
"That's what happens when you drink half a bottle of vodka and then disappear into a closet for forty-five minutes," Tsukishima said dryly.
Hinata's face burned. "You timed us?"
"I didn't have to. Nishinoya did. He was taking bets on how long you'd last before someone found you."
"Oh my god," Hinata groaned, hiding his face in his hands.
"For what it's worth," Yamaguchi said, handing them both coffee, "I think it's great. You two have always had something special. I'm glad you figured it out."
"Thanks," Kageyama said quietly.
They sat at the kitchen table, sipping their coffee. It was strange, being here in the aftermath. The party felt like a dream, or maybe a nightmare. But sitting here with Tsukishima and Yamaguchi, who knew their secret and didn't care, it felt... okay. More than okay.
"So," Tsukishima said, leaning against the counter. "How long has this been going on?"
"Nine months," Hinata admitted.
"Nine months?" Yamaguchi's eyes went wide. "You kept it secret for nine months?"
"We wanted to wait until after graduation," Kageyama explained. "We didn't want it to be a distraction."
"A distraction from what? You're both graduating. Your volleyball careers are set. What were you waiting for?"
It was a good question, and Hinata didn't have a good answer. "I guess... we were scared. Of how people would react. Of what it would mean."
"And now?" Tsukishima asked.
"Now everyone knows," Hinata said. "And it's... not as bad as I thought it would be."
"Of course it's not bad," Yamaguchi said. "You're happy together. Anyone can see that. Why would we be anything but supportive?"
"I don't know," Hinata admitted. "I guess I just built it up in my head."
"Well, you can stop worrying," Tsukishima said. "Everyone's fine with it. Annoying about it, maybe. Tanaka and Nishinoya are already planning your wedding. But fine with it."
"Our what?" Kageyama choked on his coffee.
"Your wedding. Apparently Nishinoya has very strong opinions about the venue."
Hinata laughed, the sound surprised out of him. "We've been together nine months. I think a wedding is a bit premature."
"Try telling that to Nishinoya," Tsukishima said. "He's already designed invitations."
They talked for a while longer, the conversation easy and comfortable. Tsukishima and Yamaguchi shared stories from the party, the moments Hinata and Kageyama had missed after they left. Apparently, Tanaka had tried to do a backflip and nearly broken Tsukishima's coffee table. Nishinoya had serenaded Kiyoko with a very off-key love song. Asahi had given a tearful speech about friendship that had everyone crying.
It sounded like it had been a good night, even after the drama of Hinata and Kageyama's discovery.
"We should probably go," Kageyama said eventually. "Let you guys finish cleaning up."
"Yeah, we've imposed enough," Hinata agreed.
"You're not imposing," Yamaguchi assured them. "But you probably want to go home and sleep off those hangovers."
"That sounds amazing," Hinata admitted.
They gathered their bags and said their goodbyes. At the door, Tsukishima stopped them.
"Hey," he said, his voice uncharacteristically serious. "I'm happy for you. Both of you. You deserve this."
"Thanks, Tsukishima," Hinata said, surprised by the sincerity.
"Just don't make me clean up after your sex life again," Tsukishima added, and the moment was broken.
"We'll try," Kageyama said dryly.
They left, stepping out into the bright afternoon. The sun was warm on Hinata's face, and despite the hangover and the embarrassment and the chaos of the past twelve hours, he felt good.
"So," he said, looking up at Kageyama. "Everyone knows."
"Everyone knows," Kageyama agreed.
"And they're okay with it."
"They're okay with it."
"So what now?"
Kageyama thought about it. Then he took Hinata's hand, right there on the street where anyone could see. "Now we don't have to hide anymore."
Hinata squeezed his hand, a smile spreading across his face. "I like the sound of that."
They walked down the street together, hand in hand, no longer hiding. The future was uncertain, full of challenges and changes. But they would face it together, the way they'd always faced everything. As partners. As equals. As something more.
As they turned the corner, Hinata's phone buzzed one more time. It was a message from the team group chat.
Nishinoya: "So about that wedding venue..."
Hinata laughed and showed Kageyama the message. Kageyama rolled his eyes, but he was smiling too.
"We're never going to hear the end of this, are we?" Kageyama asked.
"Probably not," Hinata admitted. "But honestly? I don't care anymore."
And he meant it. The weight that had been sitting on his chest for nine months, the constant vigilance, the careful distance, it was all gone. He could hold Kageyama's hand in public. He could look at him the way he wanted to look at him. He could be honest.
It was terrifying and exhilarating all at once.
They made their way back to Kageyama's apartment, which was closer than Hinata's. The walk took twenty minutes, and by the time they arrived, Hinata's headache had intensified to a dull, persistent throb behind his eyes.
"I need water," he groaned as Kageyama unlocked the door. "And food. And maybe to die."
"You're not dying," Kageyama said, but his voice was strained. He looked pale, his movements careful as he kicked off his shoes. "Though I understand the sentiment."
Inside, Kageyama's apartment was neat and sparse, exactly what Hinata had come to expect. They'd spent plenty of time here over the past nine months, stolen afternoons and careful evenings when they were sure no one would drop by unexpectedly. But this felt different. There was no urgency to their movements, no need to check the time or worry about being caught.
Kageyama went straight to the kitchen and filled two large glasses with water. He handed one to Hinata, then downed his own in several long gulps.
"Better?" Hinata asked, sipping his own water more slowly.
"Marginally." Kageyama refilled his glass. "I'm never drinking that much again."
"You say that now," Hinata teased, but his heart wasn't in it. He was too tired, too overwhelmed by everything that had happened.
They moved to the couch, collapsing onto it with matching groans. Hinata's phone was still buzzing intermittently in his pocket, but he ignored it. He'd deal with the messages later. Right now, he just wanted to exist in this moment, hangover and all.
"Can you believe last night actually happened?" he asked, staring at the ceiling.
Kageyama was quiet for a moment. "Which part?"
"All of it. The party. The closet. Tsukishima finding us. The hotel." Hinata turned his head to look at Kageyama. "This morning."
"It doesn't feel real," Kageyama admitted. His eyes were closed, his head tilted back against the couch. "I keep thinking I'm going to wake up and it'll all have been a dream. Or a nightmare."
"Which one?"
"I don't know yet."
Hinata understood. The exposure had been his worst fear for months, the thing that kept him up at night. What if someone found out? What if the team reacted badly? What if it changed everything?
But now that it had happened, now that everyone knew, it wasn't as catastrophic as he'd imagined. Scary, yes. Embarrassing, absolutely. But not the end of the world.
"I think," Hinata said slowly, "that it might actually be okay."
Kageyama opened his eyes and looked at him. "Yeah?"
"Yeah. I mean, everyone was pretty cool about it. Even Tsukishima, and he's the one who walked in on us." Hinata felt his face heat at the memory. "God, that was mortifying."
"You're the one who couldn't keep your hands to yourself," Kageyama pointed out, but there was no real accusation in his voice.
"You didn't exactly stop me."
"I was drunk."
"So was I."
They fell into silence again, but it was comfortable. Hinata shifted closer, resting his head on Kageyama's shoulder. Kageyama's arm came around him automatically, pulling him in.
"I'm glad it happened," Hinata said quietly. "Not the getting caught part, obviously. But the rest of it. Not having to hide anymore."
Kageyama's hand moved to Hinata's hair, fingers threading through the orange strands. "Me too."
"Even though everyone's going to tease us mercilessly?"
"Even though."
Hinata smiled against Kageyama's shoulder. His phone buzzed again, and this time he pulled it out to check. The team group chat had exploded with messages, over a hundred new ones since they'd left the café.
Tanaka: "I KNEW IT! I TOLD YOU ALL!"
Nishinoya: "You did not know it, you just said they had 'weird energy'"
Tanaka: "WEIRD ENERGY = SEXUAL TENSION"
Sugawara: "Can we please not call it that"
Daichi: "Agreed. Let's be respectful."
Nishinoya: "But seriously, how did we not figure it out sooner?"
Ennoshita: "Because they're both idiots who thought they were being subtle"
Yamaguchi: "They really weren't though"
Tsukishima: "The closet incident aside, there were signs"
Hinata groaned. "They're still talking about us."
"Let me see." Kageyama took the phone, scrolling through the messages. His expression shifted from embarrassment to amusement to something softer. "Kiyoko sent something."
He showed Hinata the message. It was a photo from last night, early in the party before things had gotten out of hand. Hinata and Kageyama were standing together near the drinks table, and while they weren't touching, the way they were looking at each other was unmistakable. Hinata's expression was open and bright, his whole attention focused on Kageyama. And Kageyama, usually so guarded, was smiling. Really smiling, the kind of smile he only ever gave to Hinata.
Kiyoko's message below the photo read: "I took this before everything happened. I think it's beautiful. You two deserve to be happy."
Hinata felt something tight in his chest loosen. "She's right, you know. We do deserve to be happy."
"I know." Kageyama handed the phone back. "I just wish we'd figured that out sooner. That we didn't have to hide for so long."
"Why did we hide?" Hinata asked. It was a question he'd been asking himself all morning. "I mean, I know why I did. I was scared. Scared of what people would think, scared of messing up the team dynamic, scared of losing you if it didn't work out. But looking back, I don't think any of those fears were really justified."
Kageyama was quiet, thinking. "I was scared too," he finally said. "Of the same things, mostly. But also of myself. Of wanting something this much. Volleyball has always been the most important thing to me. The only thing, really. And then you came along and suddenly there was something else I wanted just as badly. It was terrifying."
Hinata sat up so he could look at Kageyama properly. "And now?"
"Now I know I can have both. That wanting you doesn't mean I want volleyball any less. That you make me better at volleyball, actually. You always have." Kageyama reached out, cupping Hinata's face with one hand. "I should have told you that months ago."
"You're telling me now," Hinata said, leaning into the touch. "That's what matters."
They kissed, slow and sweet, nothing like the desperate passion of last night. This was softer, gentler, a promise rather than a demand. When they pulled apart, Hinata was smiling.
"Do you remember when we first got together?" he asked. "Like, officially?"
Kageyama snorted. "How could I forget? You were so nervous you could barely speak."
"I was not!"
"You were. You kept starting sentences and not finishing them. It took you twenty minutes to actually ask me out."
Hinata felt his face heat. "Okay, fine. I was nervous. But you weren't exactly smooth either. You said yes and then just stood there staring at me like you didn't know what to do next."
"I didn't know what to do next," Kageyama admitted. "I'd never done that before. Never wanted to do that before."
It had been nine months ago, near the end of their second year. They'd stayed late after practice, just the two of them, working on their quick attack. It had become routine by then, these extra sessions where they pushed each other harder than anyone else could. Where they communicated without words, their bodies moving in perfect sync.
That night, something had shifted. Hinata couldn't even remember what had triggered it. Maybe it was the way Kageyama had looked at him after a particularly successful spike, pride and something else shining in his eyes. Maybe it was the way their hands had brushed when Kageyama passed him a water bottle. Maybe it was just that Hinata had been holding his feelings in for so long that they'd finally burst free.
Whatever the reason, he'd found himself blurting out, "I think I like you. Like, really like you. More than just as a partner or a teammate or a friend. And I know that's probably weird and you probably don't feel the same way, but I had to tell you because I can't keep pretending that I don't feel this way when I'm around you all the time and..."
Kageyama had cut him off by kissing him. It had been clumsy and awkward, their teeth clicking together, but it had been perfect. When they'd pulled apart, Kageyama had said, "I like you too, idiot. I have for a while."
And that had been it. The start of everything.
They'd agreed to keep it secret, at least at first. Just until they figured out what they were doing, they'd told themselves. Just until they were sure it would last. But days had turned into weeks, weeks into months, and the secret had become easier to keep than to reveal.
"I wish we'd told everyone sooner," Hinata said now, the memory making him ache with regret. "We wasted so much time being scared."
"We weren't ready," Kageyama said simply. "And that's okay. We're ready now."
"Are we though? I mean, really ready? For everyone to know, for things to change, for whatever comes next?"
Kageyama pulled him close again, and Hinata went willingly, tucking himself against Kageyama's side. "I don't know," Kageyama said honestly. "But I know I'm tired of hiding. Tired of pretending you're not the most important person in my life. So yeah, I think we're ready. Or at least, we're as ready as we're going to be."
Hinata's phone buzzed again. This time it was a direct message from Daichi.
Daichi: "Hey. I know you're probably overwhelmed right now, but when you get a chance, I'd like to talk to you both. Nothing bad, I promise. Just want to check in."
Hinata showed the message to Kageyama, who grimaced. "The captain talk."
"We knew it was coming."
"Doesn't mean I'm looking forward to it."
"Should we just get it over with?" Hinata asked. "Rip off the bandaid?"
Kageyama considered, then nodded. "Yeah. Might as well."
Hinata typed out a response: "We're at Kageyama's apartment. You can come by if you want."
The reply came almost immediately: "Be there in 30."
They spent the next half hour trying to make themselves presentable. Hinata borrowed one of Kageyama's shirts since his own still smelled like alcohol and regret. They drank more water, took painkillers for their headaches, and attempted to tame their hair with limited success.
When the doorbell rang, they exchanged a look.
"Ready?" Kageyama asked.
"No," Hinata said. "But let's do it anyway."
Daichi looked exactly like Hinata remembered, solid and dependable, with that air of quiet authority that had made him such a good captain. He was carrying a plastic bag that clinked suspiciously.
"I brought sports drinks," he said by way of greeting. "Figured you'd need them."
"You're a lifesaver," Hinata said, accepting the bag gratefully.
They settled in the living room, Hinata and Kageyama on the couch, Daichi in the armchair across from them. For a moment, no one spoke. Hinata cracked open one of the sports drinks and took a long sip, the sweet electrolyte taste helping to settle his still-queasy stomach.
"So," Daichi finally said. "That was quite a party."
Hinata nearly choked on his drink. Kageyama's hand came up to pat his back, the gesture automatic and familiar.
"I'm not here to lecture you," Daichi continued, a small smile playing at his lips. "You're both adults. What you do in your private time is your business. But I am here as your friend, and as someone who cares about both of you. So I want to make sure you're okay."
"We're okay," Kageyama said, his voice steady despite the tension in his shoulders. "Embarrassed, hungover, but okay."
"And you're together? Like, officially?"
"For nine months now," Hinata admitted. "We just... we weren't ready to tell anyone yet."
Daichi nodded slowly. "I can understand that. Coming out is never easy, especially in a team environment. There's always the worry about how it might change things."
"Exactly," Hinata said, relieved that Daichi understood. "We didn't want it to be weird. Didn't want people treating us differently or thinking we were getting special treatment or whatever."
"And now that everyone knows?"
Hinata and Kageyama looked at each other. "Now," Kageyama said, "we deal with it. Together."
"Good." Daichi leaned forward, his expression serious but kind. "Because you're going to face some challenges. Not from the team, I don't think. Everyone seems supportive. But from other people. Opponents, maybe. People who don't understand or don't approve. It's not going to be easy."
"We know," Hinata said quietly. He'd thought about this, late at night when he couldn't sleep. The potential consequences of being open about their relationship. "But we're tired of hiding. And we're good at facing challenges together. It's kind of our thing."
Daichi smiled at that. "It is. You two have always brought out the best in each other. On the court and off it, apparently." He paused, then added, "For what it's worth, I think you're good together. You balance each other. And I'm glad you found each other."
Something in Hinata's chest loosened at those words. Daichi's approval meant more than he'd realized. "Thanks, Daichi. That... that means a lot."
"Just promise me one thing," Daichi said, his tone turning slightly stern. "No more drunk hookups in closets at parties. Tsukishima is traumatized."
Hinata buried his face in his hands. "Oh god. I'm never going to be able to look him in the eye again."
"Sure you will," Daichi said, laughing. "Give it a week. Maybe two. He'll get over it. Probably."
They talked for another hour, the conversation gradually shifting from the serious to the mundane. Daichi caught them up on his life, his job, his own relationship. It was comfortable and easy, and by the time he left, Hinata felt lighter than he had all day.
"That wasn't so bad," he said as Kageyama closed the door behind Daichi.
"Better than expected," Kageyama agreed. He looked at Hinata, something soft in his expression. "You know what I just realized?"
"What?"
"We can do this now. Just hang out. Without worrying about someone seeing us or asking questions. We can just be together."
Hinata grinned. "We can. What do you want to do?"
"Honestly? I want to take a nap. I'm exhausted."
"A nap sounds perfect."
They moved to Kageyama's bedroom, the space familiar and comfortable. Hinata had spent countless nights here over the past nine months, but always with an awareness of the time, always ready to leave before morning. Now, he could stay as long as he wanted.
They collapsed onto the bed, Hinata immediately curling into Kageyama's side. The position was familiar, one they'd fallen into countless times before. But this time, there was no urgency, no fear of being discovered. Just comfort and warmth and the steady rhythm of Kageyama's breathing.
"Hey, Kageyama?" Hinata murmured, already half asleep.
"Mm?"
"I love you."
He felt Kageyama tense for just a moment, then relax. They'd said it before, in private moments, whispered confessions in the dark. But this felt different. More real, somehow. More permanent.
"I love you too, dumbass," Kageyama said, his voice rough with emotion. His arms tightened around Hinata. "Now go to sleep."
Hinata smiled and let his eyes close. Within minutes, he was asleep.
---
He woke to the sound of his phone ringing. Groaning, he fumbled for it on the nightstand, squinting at the screen. It was Nishinoya.
"Hello?" he answered, his voice rough with sleep.
"HINATA! Finally! I've been trying to reach you for hours!"
Hinata pulled the phone away from his ear, wincing at the volume. Beside him, Kageyama stirred, blinking awake. "What time is it?"
"Six PM," Nishinoya said. "You've been asleep all afternoon. Anyway, listen. We're having an emergency team meeting. Well, not emergency. More like a celebration. At Tanaka's place. You and Kageyama need to come."
"Noya, we're exhausted. Can't it wait?"
"Nope! This is important. We're officially welcoming you guys as Karasuno's first official couple. There will be food. And more importantly, there will be non-alcoholic beverages only because we're all still recovering from last night."
Despite his exhaustion, Hinata felt a smile tugging at his lips. "You're really doing this?"
"Of course we are! You're family. Both of you. And family celebrates together. So get your asses over here. Seven o'clock. Don't be late."
The line went dead. Hinata looked at Kageyama, who had clearly heard the entire conversation.
"We don't have to go," Kageyama said, but there was something hopeful in his expression.
"Are you kidding? We're definitely going." Hinata sat up, stretching. His headache had faded to a dull ache, manageable now. "This is exactly what we need. To face everyone together, as a couple. No more hiding, remember?"
Kageyama sat up too, running a hand through his messy hair. "You're right. Okay. Let's do this."
They showered, separately this time despite Hinata's teasing suggestions otherwise. They were both still too exhausted and hungover for anything more than innocent affection. Hinata borrowed more of Kageyama's clothes, a soft hoodie and jeans that were slightly too long on him.
"You look ridiculous," Kageyama said, but his eyes were fond.
"You love it," Hinata shot back, and Kageyama didn't deny it.
They arrived at Tanaka's apartment at seven on the dot. The door swung open before they could even knock, revealing Nishinoya's grinning face.
"They're here!" he shouted over his shoulder, then grabbed both of them in a crushing hug. "Welcome, welcome! Come in!"
The apartment was packed. Everyone from last night's party was there, plus a few others. Yachi had joined them, along with Coach Ukai and Takeda-sensei. Hinata felt a flutter of nerves at seeing their coaches, but both men were smiling.
"There they are!" Tanaka boomed, raising a can of soda in salute. "The happy couple!"
Everyone cheered, and Hinata felt his face heat. Beside him, Kageyama had gone rigid with embarrassment, but his hand found Hinata's and squeezed.
"Okay, okay," Sugawara said, waving everyone to quiet down. "Let's not overwhelm them. They've had a rough day."
"Rough night too, from what I heard," Nishinoya said with a waggle of his eyebrows.
"NOYA!" several people shouted at once.
"What? I'm just saying!"
Despite his embarrassment, Hinata found himself laughing. This was his team, his family. And they were here to support him and Kageyama, not to judge them.
They spent the evening eating pizza and sharing stories. The atmosphere was relaxed and happy, and gradually, Hinata felt himself unwinding. People asked questions, but they were respectful ones. How long had they been together? How did it happen? Were they happy?
And Hinata answered honestly, with Kageyama occasionally chiming in. Yes, they were happy. Yes, it had been scary to hide it. Yes, they were relieved it was finally out in the open.
At one point, Tsukishima approached them. Hinata braced himself for mockery, but Tsukishima's expression was surprisingly neutral.
"I'm sorry about last night," Tsukishima said stiffly. "I should have knocked. Or, you know, not opened the closet at all."
"We're sorry too," Hinata said quickly. "We shouldn't have... I mean, that wasn't the best place for..."
"Let's just agree to never speak of it again," Tsukishima interrupted. "For all of our sakes."
"Deal," Kageyama said fervently.
Tsukishima nodded, then added, almost reluctantly, "For what it's worth, I'm glad you're together. You're less annoying when you're happy."
Coming from Tsukishima, it was practically a declaration of love. Hinata beamed at him. "Thanks, Tsukki."
"Don't call me that."
As the evening wore on, Hinata found himself pulled into a conversation with Yachi and Kiyoko. They were sitting on the couch, away from the main group, and both women were looking at him with knowing smiles.
"So," Yachi said, her voice gentle. "How are you really doing? With everything?"
Hinata considered the question. "Honestly? I'm okay. Better than okay, actually. It's scary, having everyone know. But it's also kind of a relief. Like I can finally breathe properly."
"I'm glad," Kiyoko said. "You and Kageyama deserve to be happy. And you deserve to be open about it."
"Did you know?" Hinata asked curiously. "Before last night?"
Kiyoko smiled. "I suspected. The way you looked at each other, it was hard to miss. But I figured you'd tell us when you were ready."
"I had no idea," Yachi admitted. "But looking back, there were signs. You two have always had this connection. It makes sense that it would be more than just volleyball."
"It's always been more than just volleyball," Hinata said softly. "Even before we got together. Kageyama has always been special to me. My partner, my rival, my best friend. And now he's all of that and more."
"That's beautiful," Yachi said, her eyes shining. "I'm so happy for you both."
Across the room, Kageyama was talking with Daichi and Asahi. He looked relaxed, more at ease than Hinata had seen him in months. Their eyes met across the room, and Kageyama smiled. Just a small smile, but it was for Hinata alone.
Hinata smiled back, his heart full.
Later, as the party was winding down, Coach Ukai pulled them aside. Hinata felt a flutter of nervousness. They'd talked to Daichi, but Coach Ukai was different. He was their actual coach, the one who'd trained them and pushed them and believed in them.
"I'm not going to give you a big speech," Ukai said, his gruff voice softer than usual. "But I want you to know that this doesn't change anything as far as the team is concerned. You're still my players, still part of Karasuno. And I expect you to keep working hard and pushing each other the way you always have."
"We will," Kageyama said seriously. "Nothing's going to change with volleyball."
"Good." Ukai paused, then added, "But if anyone gives you trouble, on the court or off it, you come to me. Got it? I don't tolerate that kind of crap."
Hinata felt a lump in his throat. "Thanks, Coach."
"Don't thank me. Just keep making me proud." Ukai clapped them both on the shoulder, then walked away, leaving them standing together.
"He's a good coach," Kageyama said quietly.
"The best," Hinata agreed.
They left the party around ten, exhausted but happy. The night air was cool and refreshing after the warmth of Tanaka's apartment. They walked slowly, in no hurry to get anywhere.
"That was nice," Hinata said, swinging their joined hands between them. "Everyone being so supportive."
"Yeah," Kageyama agreed. "I was worried it would be awkward, but it wasn't. It was just... normal. Like nothing had really changed."
"But everything has changed," Hinata pointed out. "We don't have to hide anymore. We can hold hands in public. We can go on actual dates. We can just be together without constantly looking over our shoulders."
Kageyama stopped walking, turning to face Hinata. The streetlight cast shadows across his face, but his eyes were bright. "You're right. Everything has changed. And I'm glad it has."
He leaned down and kissed Hinata, right there on the street where anyone could see. It was soft and sweet and perfect, and when they pulled apart, Hinata was grinning.
"I could get used to this," he said.
"Good," Kageyama said. "Because I plan on doing it a lot more often."
They continued walking, eventually ending up at a small park near Kageyama's apartment. It was empty at this hour, just them and the stars overhead. They sat on a bench, Hinata tucking himself against Kageyama's side.
"Do you remember our first kiss?" Hinata asked. "The real one, I mean. Not the one in the gym when you were confessing."
"Of course I remember. It was a week after we got together. We were at your place, watching a movie."
"You were so nervous," Hinata teased. "Your hands were shaking."
"Your hands were shaking too," Kageyama pointed out. "And you kept talking. Just rambling about nothing because you were nervous."
"I was not!"
"You were. You talked for ten minutes straight about the movie, even though neither of us was paying attention to it. And then finally I just kissed you to shut you up."
Hinata laughed at the memory. "It worked."
"It did." Kageyama's arm tightened around him. "I was so scared I was doing it wrong. I'd never kissed anyone before. Never wanted to kiss anyone before you."
"You weren't doing it wrong," Hinata said softly. "It was perfect. You're always perfect."
"I'm not perfect. Far from it."
"You're perfect for me," Hinata insisted. "That's what matters."
They sat in comfortable silence for a while, just enjoying being together. Hinata thought about the past nine months, all the stolen moments and secret touches. The way they'd learned each other, slowly and carefully. The way they'd fallen in love without even realizing it was happening.
"I'm glad we got caught," he said suddenly.
Kageyama looked at him in surprise. "Really?"
"Really. I mean, obviously I wish it hadn't been in such an embarrassing way. And I definitely wish we hadn't been drunk. But the result? Everyone knowing? Us not having to hide anymore? I'm glad for that."
"Me too," Kageyama admitted. "I was so scared of this moment for so long. But now that it's here, it's not scary at all. It's just... right."
"It is right," Hinata agreed. He tilted his head up to look at Kageyama. "We're right."
Kageyama kissed him again, longer this time. When they finally pulled apart, both of them were breathless.
"We should probably head back," Kageyama said reluctantly. "It's getting late."
"Yeah," Hinata agreed, but he didn't move. He was too comfortable, too content to be right where he was.
Eventually, they did make their way back to Kageyama's apartment. They got ready for bed in comfortable silence, the routine familiar after nine months of practice. But this time, when they climbed into bed, there was no worry about Hinata needing to leave before morning. He could stay as long as he wanted.
"Kageyama?" Hinata said into the darkness.
"Mm?"
"What do you think happens next? I mean, with us. With volleyball. With everything."
Kageyama was quiet for a moment, thinking. "I don't know," he finally said. "We graduate in a few months. We'll probably end up on different teams, at least at first. Long distance is going to be hard."
"But we'll make it work," Hinata said with certainty. "We've faced harder challenges than distance."
"Have we?"
"Sure. We've faced each other across the net. We've learned to work together when everyone said we couldn't. We've kept a relationship secret for nine months in a team environment. Distance is nothing compared to that."
Kageyama huffed a laugh. "When did you get so optimistic?"
"I've always been optimistic. You're just finally noticing."
"I've always noticed," Kageyama said softly. "It's one of the things I love about you. You never give up. You always believe things will work out."
"And they will," Hinata said confidently. "Because we're partners. On the court and off it. And partners don't give up on each other."
"No," Kageyama agreed. "They don't."
They fell asleep like that, wrapped around each other, secure in the knowledge that whatever came next, they'd face it together.
---
The next morning, Hinata woke to sunlight streaming through the window and the smell of coffee. He stretched, feeling more rested than he had in days. The hangover was finally gone, replaced by a pleasant sense of contentment.
He found Kageyama in the kitchen, already dressed and making breakfast. Two mugs of coffee sat on the counter, steam rising from them.
"Morning," Hinata said, wrapping his arms around Kageyama from behind.
"Morning." Kageyama leaned back into the embrace. "How'd you sleep?"
"Great. Best sleep I've had in months, actually."
"Same."
They ate breakfast together, talking about nothing and everything. Their phones buzzed occasionally with messages from the team, but the frantic energy of yesterday had calmed. Now it was just normal conversation, the team group chat returning to its usual chaos.
"We should probably go to practice today," Kageyama said, checking the time. "We missed yesterday."
"Do we have to?" Hinata whined. "Can't we just stay here and be lazy?"
"We've been lazy for two days. Any longer and we'll get out of shape."
"Fine," Hinata grumbled, but he was already getting up to get dressed. Kageyama was right. They'd missed enough practice. And besides, he was actually looking forward to getting back on the court. To doing what they did best.
They arrived at the gym to find several other team members already there. Tsukishima and Yamaguchi were warming up, and a few of the second years were practicing receives.
"Look who finally decided to show up," Tsukishima drawled, but there was no real bite to it.
"We're here, aren't we?" Hinata shot back. He and Kageyama dropped their bags and started their own warm-up routine.
It felt good to be back in the gym, to feel his muscles stretch and warm. This was familiar territory, comfortable and safe. And having Kageyama beside him, not having to pretend they were just teammates, made it even better.
They ran through their usual drills, the quick attack that had made them famous. The connection between them was as strong as ever, that wordless communication that let them move as one. If anything, it felt stronger now. Like not having to hide had freed something in both of them.
"Nice kill!" Yamaguchi called after a particularly good spike.
Hinata grinned, high-fiving Kageyama. Their hands lingered together for just a moment longer than necessary, and no one said anything. It was just accepted, normal.
After practice, they showered and changed, then headed out together. They were walking through the school courtyard when they ran into some students from another class. Hinata recognized them vaguely, but didn't know their names.
One of them, a tall guy with bleached hair, looked at them with obvious interest. "Hey, you're Hinata and Kageyama, right? From the volleyball team?"
"Yeah," Hinata said cautiously.
"I heard you guys are dating. That true?"
Hinata felt Kageyama tense beside him. This was it, the first real test. How they handled this would set the tone for how they handled everything else.
"Yeah," Hinata said, lifting his chin. "We are. Is that a problem?"
The guy blinked, clearly not expecting such a direct response. "No, no problem. Just curious. That's pretty cool, actually. Takes guts to be open about it."
"Thanks," Hinata said, relaxing slightly.
They continued walking, leaving the students behind. Kageyama let out a breath. "That went better than expected."
"Most things do," Hinata said. "We just have to be confident about it. If we act like it's no big deal, other people will too."
"When did you get so wise?"
"I've always been wise. You're just finally noticing."
Kageyama rolled his eyes, but he was smiling. He took Hinata's hand, right there in the middle of the courtyard where anyone could see. "Come on, wise guy. Let's go get lunch."
They spent the rest of the day together, just enjoying being able to be open. They got lunch at their favorite ramen place, where the owner congratulated them with a knowing smile. They walked through the park, holding hands and talking about everything and nothing. They stopped by the convenience store and bought snacks, debating the merits of different flavors of chips.
It was normal and domestic and perfect.
That evening, they ended up back at Hinata's apartment. It was smaller than Kageyama's, more cluttered, but it was home. They sprawled on Hinata's bed, supposedly doing homework but mostly just talking.
"I've been thinking," Kageyama said, setting aside his textbook. "About after graduation."
"Yeah?"
"I want us to stay together. I know we'll probably end up on different teams, at least at first. But I want to make it work. Whatever it takes."
Hinata's heart swelled. "Me too. I mean, obviously I want to play volleyball at the highest level I can. But I want you too. I want both."
"We can have both," Kageyama said firmly. "We'll make it work. Long distance, different schedules, whatever. We'll figure it out."
"Promise?"
"Promise."
They sealed it with a kiss, slow and deep. When they pulled apart, Hinata was smiling.
"You know what I just realized?" he said.
"What?"
"This is our first real date. Like, an actual date where we're not hiding or sneaking around. Just us, being together."
Kageyama looked around at Hinata's messy apartment, at the textbooks scattered across the bed, at their half-eaten convenience store snacks. "This is your idea of a date?"
"It's perfect," Hinata insisted. "It's us. No pretense, no hiding. Just us being together."
"You're right," Kageyama said softly. "It is perfect."
They spent the rest of the evening like that, just being together. They did eventually get some homework done, though not much. Mostly they just talked, about volleyball and the future and all the things they'd never been able to talk about openly before.
When it got late, Kageyama made to leave, but Hinata stopped him.
"Stay," he said. "You don't have to sneak out anymore. You can just stay."
Kageyama smiled, that rare, genuine smile that Hinata loved so much. "Okay. I'll stay."
They got ready for bed, brushing their teeth side by side at the bathroom sink. It was such a simple thing, but it felt monumental. This was what they'd been missing, these small domestic moments. The ability to just exist together without fear or secrecy.
In bed, they curled up together, Hinata's head on Kageyama's chest. He could hear Kageyama's heartbeat, steady and strong.
"Hey, Kageyama?" he murmured.
"Mm?"
"Thank you."
"For what?"
"For being brave enough to be with me. For not giving up on us, even when it was scary. For loving me."
Kageyama's arms tightened around him. "You don't have to thank me for that. Loving you is the easiest thing I've ever done."
Hinata felt tears prick at his eyes. "I love you too. So much."
"I know," Kageyama said softly. "I know."
They fell asleep like that, wrapped in each other's arms, no longer hiding, no longer afraid. Just two people in love, facing the future together.
---
The next few weeks passed in a blur of normalcy. They went to class, went to practice, spent time with the team. And through it all, they were open about their relationship. They held hands in the hallways, sat together at lunch, kissed goodbye before separating for different classes.
There were a few negative reactions, some whispers and stares. But for the most part, people were either supportive or indifferent. And the team, their family, was solidly behind them.
One afternoon, about three weeks after the party, they were at practice when Coach Ukai called them over.
"I've got some news," he said, his expression serious. "There's a scout coming to watch practice next week. From a Division 1 team. They're interested in both of you."
Hinata's heart leapt. "Both of us?"
"Both of you," Ukai confirmed. "They've heard about your quick attack, about how well you work together. They want to see it in person."
Hinata looked at Kageyama, seeing his own excitement reflected back. This was what they'd been working toward, the chance to play at the highest level. And the possibility of doing it together, of not being separated, was almost too good to be true.
"We'll be ready," Kageyama said, his voice steady despite the excitement in his eyes.
"I know you will," Ukai said. "Now get back to practice. You've got a lot of work to do."
They practiced harder than ever that week, pushing each other to be better. The quick attack had always been their specialty, but now they refined it even further. They moved as one, perfectly in sync, their connection on the court undeniable.
The day of the scout's visit, Hinata was a bundle of nervous energy. He couldn't sit still, couldn't focus on anything except the upcoming practice.
"Relax," Kageyama said, catching his hand and squeezing. "We've got this."
"I know. I just... this is important. This could be our future."
"It will be our future," Kageyama said confidently. "We're going to show them exactly what we can do."
And they did. The practice was flawless, their quick attack faster and more precise than ever. Hinata could feel the scout's eyes on them, could sense the impressed attention. When they landed a particularly difficult spike, the entire team erupted in cheers.
After practice, the scout approached them. He was a middle-aged man with kind eyes and a firm handshake.
"That was impressive," he said. "I've seen a lot of players, but the connection you two have is something special. We'd like to offer you both positions on our team."
Hinata felt like he might pass out from excitement. Beside him, Kageyama had gone very still.
"Both of us?" Kageyama asked, his voice carefully neutral.
"Both of you," the scout confirmed. "We think you'd be a valuable addition to our team. Together."
They accepted on the spot, unable to contain their excitement. After the scout left, they stood in the empty gym, just looking at each other.
"We did it," Hinata said, his voice awed. "We're going to play together."
"We are," Kageyama agreed. Then he was pulling Hinata into a kiss, right there in the middle of the gym where they'd spent so many hours practicing together.
When they pulled apart, both of them were grinning.
"This is just the beginning," Hinata said. "For us, for our volleyball careers, for everything."
"I know," Kageyama said. "And I can't wait."
They walked out of the gym hand in hand, ready to face whatever came next. Together, the way they'd always been meant to be.
The future was bright and uncertain and full of possibilities. But they would face it the same way they faced everything: as partners, as equals, as two people who loved each other and volleyball in equal measure.
And that, Hinata thought, was exactly how it should be.
