Chapter 1 — An Unforeseen Arrangement
The Heights Alliance dormitory was unusually lively for a weekday evening.
Laughter echoed through the common room as Class 1-A settled into the comfortable routine they'd developed over the past months. Kaminari and Kirishima argued over a video game. Ashido loudly commentating the whole thing like a parody of a sport. Sero, naturally, joined in as her co-star.
Asui and Sato prepared the evening's dinner. Tokoyami sat back reading poetry, while Uraraka learned sign language with Koji.
Across the room, Midoriya smiled to himself.
It was nice. Commonplace and expected for a bunch of teenagers living together.
After everything they'd endured—the Sports Festival, internships, villain attacks, and countless brushes with danger—he found himself appreciating evenings like this more than ever.
"I think I'll put my notes away before dinner." He said quietly, not wanting to interrupt the moments between everyone.
Nobody noticed him walk up to his level. Everyone was too engrossed in a perfect day after school until-
*CRACK-WHAMP!!!*
A deafening crack and crumbled rattled through the hallway, through the floor, down the stairs, and finally into the common room.
"What was that!?"
Another sound followed. Not an explosion. Not screaming. Just another unceremonious, louder thud against the upstairs floor, echoing much the same as the first noise.
"...Huh?"
Everyone exchanged confused looks before rushing toward the hallway.
Midoriya stood frozen in the doorway to his room. His jaw hung open as he stared at the utter disaster before him.
His room no longer resembled a room.
The door itself had fallen off it's hinges, and was split down the middle, and the immediate wall surrounding it was caved into the room. Everything was covered with drywall rubble, sheetrock dust particles littered everything inside like a wasteland rime.
The furniture inside was even worse!
His desk was completely bashed into splinters and half broken cabinets.
The mattress was folded in half and suspended from the light fixture by what appeared to be industrial tape, torn open and springs pulled through.
Every notebook he owned had imploded. The paper shreds littered the filthy scene as if to add itself as tragic snowflakes.
Someone had painted an enormous, deranged smiley face over the All Might posters, rearranged into a...
Oh, how classy and original.
Everything down to his bed was ruined to some degree. The only thing in the room that looked relatively salvageable was his dresser. It still had several cracks running up it's left side and door, but it remained shut. Hopefully, meaning his clothes were intact.
"..."
"..."
"...How?" Kaminari whispered.
"I don't... I don't even know where to begin," Jirō muttered.
Iida blinked twice before uttering the perfect words to describe the image before them.
"I knew things were going too well to be true." He sighed.
Midoriya merely stared ahead on the couch. Dead eyed, glassy, and exhausted.
"Why me?"
Yaoyorozu stepped beside him.
Even as a Vice-president, she had no idea how to compose Midoriya's reaction to all of this as they sat in the common room. They waited for faculty to arrive with a maintenance team to assess the damage, but it in the meantime...
"Midoriya?"
The greenette only sighed, one trying to be controlled and failing to do so. He looked over and gave what she could tell was his best attempt at the moment to a playcating smile. It looked utterly defeated.
Like their old toaster when Kaminari thought his reflection looked handsome on it's sides, and proceeded to smooch it.
Rest in peace, Smaugie.
Yaoyorozu frowned, it was admirable but no less a collapsing sham. The heiress supposed there was something she could prod him with, but what?
"Are-are you perhaps most upset about your merchandise? My father is a collector of hunting trophies, so I understand how passionate one can be of paraphernalia..."
Good enough. She sounds like a damn psychiatrist and not a concerned classmate.
But it works.
Midoriya let his shoulders heave down as he slumped once again. "No, I only brought the most recent releases of All Might merchandise. Nothing rare either, so I can just replace it."
"Is it your notes then? I know you've taken great care of them."
"N-No, not that either. I made back ups that are coded too, so I'm fine with that."
Some of the others scooted over to help soothe him, the class only half attempting to get on with dinner as they did their best to comfort him. No one was sure what to say in this situation.
Before anyone could say anything else, Aizawa arrived with Midnight, Vlad King, All Might, and Nezu close behind.
One look inside the common room and Aizawa aged in Los Angeles traffic jams.
An investigation didn't take long.
Security footage revealed several students from the General Education department sneaking into the dorms while maintenance workers were moving equipment earlier that afternoon.
The class had been a target in general, they simply snuck into Midoriya's dorm first and spent all their time in there by accident. Clearly, the domicile had become a personal rage room for them.
Apparently, the prank had been to "get back" at the Hero Course.
The participants were swiftly identified, with Nezu assuring everyone disciplinary action would be severe.
That solved one problem. Unfortunately...
It didn't solve the resident Hero Nerd's sleeping situation.
"The structural damage isn't cosmetic," one of the maintenance staff explained. "Several walls will need repairs, electrical wiring has to be replaced, and the furniture is beyond saving."
"Estimated completion?" Asked Nezu
"About three weeks."
Midoriya blinked.
"Three...?"
"I'm afraid so." Nezu folded his paws together.
"Which means your fellow classmate will require temporary accommodations."
—
Representatives from Classes 1-A and 1-B had been invited to discuss their only available options.
Midoriya wished he could disappear.
Everyone was discussing him as though he weren't sitting right there.
Midnight suggesting she take him in was met with a resounding no, and childishl6 pout back for it, did not help.
"The obvious solution," Vlad King said, "is an empty room in the Class 1-B dormitory."
Kendou grimaced "It's kind of a musty storage space now, though."
"Would you be willing to help make a livable space for Midoriya out of it?"
Monoma smirked from beside his Class President, seemingly content with Midoriya's bad luck.
"Well, hmmmm. We could probably purge enough for a futon and small cabinet, at least," replied Kendou.
Aizawa nodded once."It'll do for now."
Most heads around the room followed.
Even Iida reluctantly agreed.
"It is certainly the most practical arrangement."
Kirishima looked dejected.
"So Deku's leaving our dorm for three weeks?"
"Temporarily," Aizawa corrected."Still, Midoriya are you comfortable with this for the time being?"
Midoriya stood still and forced a smile.
"I'll be okay."
He meant it. Mostly.
Living with another class wasn't ideal. Living in what amounted to the teenage equivalent of a divorced family's garage? Even less.
But everyone was trying to help, and at the last possible moment, when his problem suddenly hits their lap. He didn’t have the right to complain over the mediocre boarding. It's what could be afford him at the moment.
Monoma looked positively delighted.
"Oh, this should be entertaining."
Kendo immediately elbowed him.
"What?"
"What you really mean Monama, is we'll make our honored guest feel welcome. Right?"
"Of course!" His grin suggested otherwise.
Yaoyorozu watched the exchange in silence.
Her fingers tightened slightly around the edge of her skirt.
She knew Monoma, and Kendou even more so. Neither were cruel or malicious.
But endlessly competitive. Class B was like that in general with her own peers. Monoma was simply the most unflattering and antagonistic of them, everyone else was clean. Yet...
Midoriya wouldn't get a week's peace.
Every training session. Every meal. Every conversation would become a bridge to poke and prod at Midoriya's potential
Monoma would jump at the chance to raise it up to a whole new pedigree.
And Midoriya?
It was dreadfully obvious where that would take him. Any judgement made of his capabilities or comment to outperform them would embed itself in him. Spur on his very public habit of pushing himself too hard.
The room gradually settled.
The decision had been made.
Nezu smiled.
"Very well. Unless there are objections—"
"There is."
Every head turned.
Yaoyorozu boldy approached Midoriya from behind, placed her hand on his shoulder and yanked him close. She turned him, slightly placing herself between their sister class representatives.
She was painfully aware of every eye in the room, but this felt right to do. It was a better alterntative in her opinion.
"I'd like to propose another arrangement."
Nezu tilted his head.
"Go on."
She inhaled carefully.
"I believe Midoriya should remain with Class 1-A."
Aizawa raised an eyebrow."And where would he stay?"
There was no turning back now.
"...With me."
Silence.
Utter silence.
The entire common room came to a halt. Cars and record players had smoother stops. Even the normally more composed, like Tokoyami and Todoroki, looked surprised.
Midoriya was scared of Ashido's giddy smile. Is she making tea kettle noises?
"...Eh?"
Yaoyorozu's cheeks warmed despite herself.
"My room is not any larger than anyone else's," she admitted, honestly.
"In fact, it's rather cramped because of my bed."
That detail somehow made the room even quieter.
"However," she continued, "His stay would only be temporary."
"I realize the implications of my suggestion, but I do trust Midoriya. He's shown to be a respectable gentleman in the past and it's a matter of his living space, after all. I'm just asking that everyone consider my reasoning before dismissing it."
Nezu gestured politely. "We're listening."
She met his gaze.
"Class 1-B is being very generous. I don't question that and weren't greatful for the offer."
Yaoyorozu finally looked down at Midoriya to his face. His bright red strawberry, freckles for seeds and hair for stem, blushing face.
"But Midoriya already has established routines here. Moving him between classes for several weeks creates unnecessary disruption."
She hesitated, knowing how bad this next point may sound, but Yaoyorozu was willing to do anything for her classmate right now.
"...And while I hold no ill will toward Class 1-B, I worry that its competitive atmosphere may prevent him from properly resting."
Monoma frowned.
"I resent that implication."
"I'm not accusing anyone of bad intentions," Yaoyorozu replied evenly. "But Midoriya already has a history of training and fighting to the point of breaking his bones."
The comment seemed like an obvious reasoning for her offer, but Aizawa quickly noticed another push behind it.
"He consistently places others before himself. No matter how unnecessary it may be to do so."
Izuku opened his mouth, aaaaand closed it again.
She wasn't wrong.
Yaoyorozu continued more softly.
"I simply don't believe he'd truly have time to recover."
Kendou had the decency to blush, knowing her fellow rep was dead on the money. She looked to her left innocently at the now oh so interesting elevator.
Seems she wouldn't get some bonus sparring sessions.
Midoriya felt heat creep into his face. "Y-Yaoyorozu! Really, I'll be fine. I'm sure you'd get uncomfortable with me around, it wouldn't be right to impose too!"
She looked directly at him.
"I know you'd be fine."
"I also know," she said gently, "that being 'fine' and being comfortable are not always the same thing."
There was nothing he could reply to that.
She'd seen right through him.
"...A-Alright."
Nezu observed the exchange without interrupting.
Aizawa did the same.
Neither teacher missed what had just happened.
Midoriya hadn't argued because he preferred Class 1-B.
He'd argued because he believed he was asking too much.
Again.
Like always.
Ashido quietly leaned toward Jirō.
"...She's serious."
"I know."
After several moments, Nezu finally spoke.
"This is certainly unconventional."
A collective sigh escaped the room.
"However..."
"Our goal is the well-being of our students," He smiled.
He looked toward Aizawa.
"Your thoughts?"
Aizawa was silent for a long moment.
Then he looked directly at Midoriya.
"I agree with Nezu. It's unconventional but just as, if not more logical than our first option.
"HUH!?
Midoriya felt like he was in limbo.
Aizawa sighed. His gaze shifted to Yaoyorozu.
"You understand what you're volunteering for?"
"I do."
"No complaints later."
"There won't be any."
"...Very well."
Nezu clasped his paws together.
"With appropriate expectations, privacy measures, and both students' consent, I approve the temporary arrangement."
The room erupted.
"Kyaaa!" Ashido squealed.
"Mineta. Kaminari. Not a word," Jirō warned.
"I wasn't gonna!"
"You were absolutely going to."
"Lucky bastard..."
Midoriya, meanwhile, could only stare.
"M-Me?"
Nezu chuckled.
"Yes, young Midoriya. It seems you'll have a roommate."
He slowly looked at said roommate.
She offered him a smile sweet enough to make Helen of Troy proud.
Triumphant and not an ounce of shame.
"Let's get you set up right away!" she said with the most adorable clasp of her hands below her chin.
For reasons he couldn't quite explain...
Those words eased a knot in his chest that had been carrying for much longer than the destruction of his dorm room.
"Sure." Midoriya couldn't deny a tiny smile at that precious face.
