Jayce longed to be understood, to be accepted and loved. It drove him to be a chronic people pleaser, something Mel had leveraged shamelessly. But circumstances being as they were, Viktor knew he would always be found wanting by Piltover, and so he developed a certain apathy for approval.
This had caused no small amount of friction between the two as Jayce's social obligations ballooned and Viktor's health deteriorated. Mel had known, intellectually. But watching Jayce crumble under the doctor's emotionless recitation of Viktor's prognosis changed everything.

Monica tilts her head. “C’mere,” she says, holding a hand out. “Let me feel your forehead.”
Well, how can Isaac say no to that? He walks over to Monica and obediently bends down to put his head within her arm’s reach. She puts the back of her hand against his cheek—it’s nice and cool, he wishes she’d leave it there—and then frowns, eyes sharpening. “You’re sick,” she accuses.
