  1. The answer being, of course: "You are you, the unique combination of influences and choices you make."

    However, our instinct to fit into a tribe is strong and firmly encoded in our collective subconscious. It is easier to say that you refuse to abide by labels than it is to refuse to label yourself in the deepest recesses of your mind. It doesn't help that, thanks to Roland, Marinette probably struggles against a significant undercurrent of self-loathing: She's the daughter of a foreigner; 'not French enough' for her grandfather and the like. I'm pretty sure that her lack of immersion in her mother's culture comes from Sabine's reaction to Roland's bigotry and feeling that she would in some way be doing wrong if she taught Marinette what it means to be Chinese.
