Comment on Proposed Changes to the Archive of Our Own's Terms of Service and Frequently Asked Questions

  1. We or the services we use may store or process your personally identifying information in data centers which may be located in the United States or other countries.

So, is AO3 selling our personal information to 3rd parties or something??

    1. It is just being stored by a 3rd party.

      1. Why is it being stored, though?

        1. Probably because your email address that is coupled to your account needs to be stored somewhere, otherwise it wouldn't be coupled to your account? Basically every website stores information on its users, that's how having an account works.

          1. Thanks for your feedback. Although we own the servers on which the AO3 as a whole is hosted, we aren't able to perform every useful function on our own servers, including things like disaster recovery backups and spam detection. We do not and will not sell your information, but these services may hold or process it as part of maintaining or improving the site. We attempt to ensure that all third-party providers have acceptable privacy policies, and we don't share your data with anyone who would sell it to others, but we can't control their security, and we can't list every service we might use in advance. The ToS always tried to make that clear, but we are trying to make it more clear.
