Oh my goodness, we mothers carry enough guilt for all the things we feel we ought to be doing - don’t carry guilt over your writing too! That’s the joy of fan fiction: we do it for its own sake, for our own pleasure (and, as you say, escape), and we don’t owe anyone anything!
I hate the thought of you losing sleep, but that you’re writing at all with young children is quite something. I’m here writing BSG again picking up a big story that I got maybe 200k words into before the kids were born. I literally don’t remember what I wrote, it’s been so long (kids are now 14 and 12). I could probably have resumed sooner, but before they were well into elementary school, esp part time working as well? Not a chance.
A lot of the appeal of your story is how you’re processing parenthood throughout. I was a rather reluctant mother myself - it took my other half ten years to talk me into it - so it really speaks to me. What’s so impressive is that you’ve got plot going on too, and deep character work, and that it’s so much more than an extended noodling on what it means to have your life, priorities, thought patterns turned upside down by a child. And so ballsy too: you just killed three of your OCs! (That’s literally where I’m up to, Ellen and Bill on the way to the ward to find Katya).
I can totally understand not wanting others’ fingers in your work, even superficially on a tech level, so please take my offer as the compliment it is and I’ll just keep sending you comments as I read.
If you change your mind - I’m here, and happy to do it for your WIP instead (you’re right, that would make more sense).
But regardless, don’t beat yourself up! You do good work, you can do it as slowly as you damn well please :-)
