Summary
After the battle with the Chitari, families are notified and they begin to grieve, the Avengers chief among them.
Everyone--even Phil Coulson, maybe especially him--has secrets. SHIELD is good a ferreting them out, but there are some things that the organization just doesn't know to look for.
That's probably why they don't notice Phil is alive for a few days until the coroner goes to do the standard SHIELD autopsy.

Summary
Phil Coulson doesn't have a Scythe. He doesn't wear a Cloak. He is not Death.
He is a guide--Shade is the name widely accept by those that speak English, though there are various myths that give them other names--a being that can protect and help usher the recent dead to where they belong and he's always been one.
That doesn't mean you can replace all of his suits with Black Cloaks and his gun with a modern made Scythe, and if he manages to find it he WILL tase Stark and watch Supernanny as he drools for stealing his things, Fury be damned.
Sometimes he wonders why he told them. Or maybe just should have disappeared. Really. He thinks that would have been better than this.
